Shonda shakes it up ABC bolsters the ranks with ShondaLand’s first costume

ShondaLand is going in a different direction this summer. The production company founded by screenwriter/producer Shonda Rhimes has made a comfortable home for itself in ABC’s Thursday night prime-time block, with such hit drama series as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “How to Get Away with Murder.”

In a departure from the contemporary, workplace-based shows we usually get from Rhimes, the latest offering from ShondaLand is a period piece — and you can look for it Monday nights instead of in the usual TGIT block. “Still StarCrossed” takes us back to fair Verona in a series that serves as a sequel to William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” It’s based on the novel of the same name by Melinda Taub and makes its longawaited debut Monday, May 29, on ABC.

As just about anyone who made it through high school English knows, “Romeo and Juliet” is one of Shakespeare’s best-known tragedies and ends with the deaths of the play’s two titular lovers. The final scene of the play leads us to believe that the feuding Montague and Capulet families are reconciled by their children’s deaths, but as we see in “Still Star-Crossed,” things in Verona are still more than a little rocky.

The series follows characters we were made familiar with, to varying degrees, in “Romeo and Juliet.” British actress Lashana Lynch (“Fast Girls,” 2011) stars as Rosaline Capulet, Juliet’s cousin. In the series, she’s taken in by her aunt and uncle (Juliet’s still-grieving parents) following the deaths of her parents, and is forced to work as a servant.

In Shakespeare’s play, Rosaline is a minor character, but an important one. Her role is a non-speaking one (and in most productions, she’s never even seen), but those familiar with the play will remember that she’s the object of Romeo’s affections in Act I, Scene I, before he sets his eyes on her cousin, Juliet — though Rosaline

“hath forsworn to love,” a.k.a. the feeling isn’t mutual. It’s because of Rosaline that he sneaks into the Capulet party, and thus meets Juliet. You know the rest of the story. Starring opposite Lynch is Wade Briggs (“Please Like Me”) as Benvolio Montague, Romeo’s cousin, who tries to keep the two families from ripping each other to pieces for much of the play. In “Still StarCrossed,” his desire for peace doesn’t extend to his own marriage prospects; he’s ordered to marry Rosaline, who has no say in the matter, and neither of them is thrilled with the arrangement.

Prince Escalus (Sterling Sulieman, “In Time,” 2011), however, is convinced that the match will bring peace to Verona at long last, and is heedless of the fact that Benvolio is firmly against mixing Montague and Capulet blood, and Rosaline despises her betrothed.

For fans of Rhimes’ shows, the debut of “Still Star-Crossed” has been long awaited. The announcement first came well over a year ago, in January 2016, that ABC had ordered the pilot for the 201617 season. The plan was to give it a mid-season premiere, but the scope of the production (which is filmed in Europe), and Rhimes’ packed schedule, simply didn’t allow for it.

This isn’t your average ShondaLand production, filmed on a Los Angeles soundstage, after all.

Showrunners wanted to give it the time and attention that a well-orchestrated costume drama demands.

“It has taken us a little longer than we thought it would’ve taken us,” ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey told Deadline at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. “It has all the great hallmarks of a ShondaLand project, but it also is very epic in terms of scope and scale, and we did not want to rush it into a place where we felt like it wasn’t ready.”

Period dramas have always been a draw, but the genre is having a moment right now in particular. The dearly departed “Downton Abbey” was a megahit for PBS, and Netflix’s “The Crown” has been raking in the accolades. There’s “Victoria,” “Poldark,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “Poirot” — the list goes on and on, and the popularity of the format shows no sign of waning. It’s no great surprise that Rhimes would want a piece of that pie.

While at first glance, the show looks nothing like the other series under the ShondaLand label, showrunners are confident that fans of “Grey’s Anatomy” and the rest will still find the elements they love about those shows in “Still Star-Crossed.”

“It’s different, but it isn’t,” executive producer Betsy Beers told Variety. “It is different in that it’s a

Buckle up, food fans — Fox’s massive culinary competition is back with new contestants, a new judge and a whole host of new challenges for home cooks with culinary dreams.

“MasterChef’s” eighth season premieres Wednesday, May 31, on Fox, and world-famous chef Gordon Ramsay and acclaimed pastry chef Christina Tosi return to judge the high-stakes cooking competition. Last season was the first to feature only the two permanent judges — seasons 1 through 6 each had three — but this season the show is back

at full strength after one of last year’s guest judges received a promotion.

Chef Aarón Sanchez takes a more permanent position alongside Ramsay and Tosi, after serving as a guest judge in several episodes last season. Cooking show connoisseurs should recognize him from his frequent appearances as a judge in Food Network’s “Chopped” and “Chopped Junior,” or maybe from his pair of cookbooks, “La Comida del Barrio” and “Simple Food, Big Flavor: Unforgettable Mexican-Inspired Recipes from My Kitchen to Yours.”

Speaking of cookbooks, part of the grand prize awarded to this season’s “MasterChef” winner is a cookbook publishing deal, and last season’s winner just released his. Las Vegas-based home cook Shaun O’Neale’s “My Modern American Table” was released earlier in May, and it blends his own recipes with some behind-the-scenes peeks at his time competing in “MasterChef.”

Billing itself as one of the world’s biggest cooking competitions, “MasterChef” recruits the best home cooks from around the country and puts them through an intense regimen of competition. These are folks from all walks of life — single parents, college students, even retirees — who have dreams of making a career out of their love of cooking but who never went down the path of becoming professional chefs.

Just because these ordinary folks never went to culinary school doesn’t mean they’re slumps in the kitchen — quite the opposite. To even get into the competition they have to prove they have the potential to be worthy of the grand prize: a cookbook deal, a whopping $250,000 and the coveted MasterChef trophy.

It’s a show that makes culinary dreams come true, and it’s back to a full trio of judges with the addition of chef Aarón Sanchez. “MasterChef” premieres Wednesday, May 31, on Fox.

Over the weekend, President Trump invited brutal Filipino dictator Rodrigo Duterte to visit the White House. It’s the first time Trump has ever said the words, “Rodrigo, please come to America.”

President Trump also said he would be honored to meet North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un. Trump said: “He’s my kind of guy — he’s crazy, he’s

overweight, and he has a ridiculous haircut.”

In another interview, President Trump said he thinks the Civil War could have been prevented. After hearing this, John McCain said: “Trust me, I did everything I could!”

The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon

President Trump just gave an interview where he wondered why the Civil War ever happened. Then Education

Secretary Betsy DeVos said: “That’s easy! Captain America and Iron Man got in a big fight!”

Trump defended all the trips he’s made to his golf courses, saying he only goes there to hold meetings. Even guys who go to Hooters “for the wings” were like, “Yeah, right.”

Trump’s keeping busy. In fact, I read that he invited the leader of Thailand to visit the White House. But Trump thinks “Thailand” is just a clothing chain that sells really long ties.

Late Night With Seth Meyers

President Trump said yesterday that being president has been a “big burden” on his family. “Yes, but somehow we manage,” said Melania from her penthouse in New York.

Southwest Airlines has announced that it will no longer overbook its flights. While United says it will now match up flight attendants and passengers by weight class to make for fairer fights.
