I f there’s one concept that never seems to get old, it’s time travel. There have been dozens of books, movies and TV shows on the subject — some great, some awful, and nearly all at least a little bit mind-bending.
The topic is a particularly hot one on the small screen just now, with four time travel-based series set to debut in the 2016-17 season. “Timeless” is one that has already landed, and with 7.7 million viewers tuning in to the premiere, it’s clear that people are digging the premise. The sci-fi action drama debuted last month, and a new episode airs Monday, Nov. 14, on NBC.
By now I’m sure we all know the most important rule of time travel: if you make the slightest change, it could hugely alter the present, so for crying out loud, don’t do it. This is tricky enough in mundane personal time-travel situations, but “Timeless” takes it several steps further in its weekly threats to rewrite history as we know it.
Abigail Spencer (“Rectify”) stars as Lucy Preston, a history professor struggling to live up to the legacy of her now-ailing mother. In the pilot episode, she’s whisked away by Homeland Security and told that her wealth of historical knowledge is needed to help stop a terrorist — a timetraveling terrorist, no less!
Garcia Flynn (Goran Visnjic, “ER”) is a master criminal who has barged into the headquarters of the mysterious Mason Industries (to where Lucy is spirited) and stolen the time machine the company created. His aim is to zip back to major events in history and change the outcome, and thus, the future. Why? As Lucy theorizes, “to kill America in the crib,” but beyond that, Flynn’s motivations are still being unraveled.
Fortunately, Mason Industries has a second time machine — a prototype in which a crack team can follow Flynn through time to stop him from carrying out his nefarious plans. Lucy makes up one
third of said team, with her indepth knowledge of seemingly every minute detail of every era and event in the history of the world an asset in navigating situations in which the group would otherwise stick out like a sore thumb.
Lucy is joined by Master Sgt. Wyatt Logan (Matt Lanter, “90210”), a rock-solid U.S. Army Delta Force operative who’s there to wave an anachronistic gun around, open locks with anachronistic bra underwires and brazenly flout the rules of time travel on a regular basis. We find out early on that he’s still grieving a wife who has died, that he holds himself responsible and that he would very much like to use his newfound mode of transportation to stop her death from happening.
The last member of the team (and, arguably, the one with all the best lines) is Rufus Carlin (Malcolm Barrett, “Better Off Ted”), a programmer at Mason Industries who is bullied into the job because he’s the only one who knows how to pilot the machine. It’s clear from the get-go that he really, really doesn’t want this assignment because, as he aptly states, “I am black. There is literally no place in American history that will be awesome for me.” Fair argument, Rufus.
It’s plain early on that Flynn isn’t just a straight-up bad guy. He’s doing some rotten things, but
his motivations may or may not be coming from a rotten place. He tells Lucy that he knows her in the future, and he possesses a journal written in her handwriting, but which she, at this point, has never written. So, along with the excitement of leaping through time, there’s a deeper intrigue at play in the show.
This season, the team travels to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Rat Pack-era Las Vegas, the moon landing, Nazi Germany, the Alamo and more. A cool aspect of the show is the depth it provides for each event, delving into lesserknown details that are part of greater, well-known events. Spencer spoke to this at New York Comic Con:
“Yes, it’s historical time periods, a costume drama, and a fantasy of sorts, but they’re exploring things true in history, bringing them to light and making those names famous that people usually gloss over,” she said, adding that she herself is learning more about all these events as filming goes on.
Of course, though the gang repeatedly foils Flynn’s plans, thereby averting major disaster, their actions do cause things to play out differently in the present, and for some it’s worse than others. Lucy returns home in the opening episode to learn that her family dynamic has completely changed: her sister no longer exists, her pre-

Across the nation, ovens are being fired up for turkeys and hams, baking dishes prepared for casseroles, and bread crumbs tossed together for perfectly seasoned stuffing as millions of people prep for the upcoming seasonal feasts. For a lot of families, these Thanksgiving and Christmas meals are being planned by none
other than a beloved grandmother.
Food Network is saluting the older ladies in our lives with a new twist on culinary competitions. “Clash of the Grandmas” premieres Sunday, Nov. 13, and its six food-packed episodes promise to be anything but old hat.
Soap star Cameron Mathison (“All My Children”) oversees the contest as host of the series. In each of the themed episodes, four grand-
mas enter the kitchen to throw down in three heated rounds of competition. The premiere’s first challenge is a perfect one for the episode’s Thanksgiving theme. The grannies find themselves handed all of the ingredients required to make the perfect stuffing — and then are told to make a side dish that’s anything but traditional.
The second round challenges the home cooks to transform Thanksgiving leftovers into a succulent Italian dish, and their final trial tasks them with making their best Thanksgiving pie — but, in a surprising twist, they need to get trendy and make it a pieon-a-stick!
After each round, a panel of judges tastes and critiques the culinary creations, and one of the grandmas is sent back to her own kitchen. For the one who rises above the rest, though, there’s $10,000 waiting to be deposited into her bank account; how’s that for a nice Christmas present?
In the coming weeks, more grandmothers will test their mettle against each other, facing challenges such as making a brunch that features colors chosen by their grandkids, cooking using a clothes iron, livening up fruit cake and making meat loaf in only 30 minutes with
the help of some unexpected sous chefs: grandpas.
It’s all good holiday fun with grandmothers putting together holiday meals under outrageous conditions. With each episode’s winner taking home $10,000, though, it’s going to be a very merry Christmas for six grandmas this holiday season.
Trump has tweeted multiple times about the media rigging the election, and he’s right. From day one, the media rigged this election — in favor of Donald Trump. You can’t turn on the TV without seeing Trump. He’s like the Geico gecko, but more
On Saturday, Trump said that Hillary might be using drugs to help her performance in the debates. Remember what she said about her debate strategy: “When they go low, we get high.”
No matter what happens on Nov. 8, Trump apparently has a contingency plan, because now it seems Trump’s son-inlaw, Jared Kushner, is in talks to create a Trump media
network. Could you imagine Trump being on your TV 24 hours a day? That would be like — well, it would be like right now.
Trump spent the weekend campaigning and complaining. He’s been Camplaining. He has been tweeting up a storm about how the election is rigged by the dishonest media. And he’s right! You can tell the media is rigged against Donald
Trump because they keep putting microphones in front of him.
During the debate, Trump said that the women accusing him of sexual assault are just looking for, quote: “Their 10 minutes of fame.” But the expression is “15 minutes of fame.” Trump is so cheap, he’s low-balling them on their minutes of fame.
