Ethan Hawke stars as John Brown in ‘The Good Lord Bird’

As protests and demonstrations across the U.S. and the world shine a light on systemic racism, a new miniseries brings TV viewers back in time to the era of slavery in the weeks before the eruption of the Civil War. Given its context and the content, the production is poised to spark further conversation on the state of race relations today.

Ethan Hawke (“Dead Poets Society,” 1989) stars as famous abolitionist John Brown in “The Good Lord Bird,” premiering Sunday, Oct. 4, on Showtime. The seven-part series is based on the novel of the same name by James McBride and, although inspired by actual events, features fictional characters as it explores Brown’s story. Joshua Ca leb Johnson (“Black-ish”) stars alongside Hawke as fictional young slave Henry Shackleford, whom Brown “frees” and nicknames “Onion” after mistaking him for a girl and giving him a dress to wear. He soon joins the ranks of Brown’s rag-tag army, and the story unfolds through his eyes.

McBride’s novel was released in 2013 and quickly drew compari sons to Mark Twain’s classic “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” It was touted for its “wonderfully bi zarre images” by Héctor Tobar in the Los Angeles Times and went on to win the National Book Award for

Fiction. Hawke not only stars in the television adaptation of the book but also adapted the story for the small screen alongside fellow executive producer Jason Blum (“Sharp Objects”).

“The genius of the novel, for me, is how it deals with gender and race, and how we deal with the blind spots that we see,” Hawke said at the winter Television Critics Association media tour.

Much like the book, the miniseries explores racial, religious and gender roles in America and, according to an official Showtime release, “weaves a humorous, dramatic and historical tapestry of Antebellum America.” Showtime’s “The Good Lord Bird” opens in Kansas in 1856, during a time known as “Bleeding Kansas,” when anti-slavery groups clashed with pro-slavery groups. Even with the delay, there’s plenty of buzz about the series, thanks in part to Hawke’s involvement. The program marks the Academy Award nominee’s first major TV gig in nearly a decade. It’s clear from the trailer for the new series that Hawke’s Brown is sufficiently unhinged. The real-life Brown was on a mission to abolish slavery at just about any cost, allegedly convinced that he was doing God’s work and that violence was necessary to end the practice of slavery. Bringing such a character to life would be a challenge for any actor, but Hawke’s part in the miniseries is just one in a long list of challenging roles the actor has tackled throughout his career. He first came to the attention of audiences as Todd An-

klater’s “Before” trilogy and “Training Day” (2001) — the latter of which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He also earned a nod in the same category for “Boyhood” (2014). The actor is no stranger to adapting stories for the screen, having earned two Oscar nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Before Sunset” (2004) and “Before Midnight” (2013).

Hawke’s co-star Johnson is one of the entertainment industry’s upand-comers. The teenager has landed roles in FX’s “Snowfall,” TNT’s “Animal Kingdom” and ABC’s “Black-ish.” On the big screen, he starred in the indie movie “It’s Just a Gun” (2017) and the feature “Ray Meets Helen” (2017).

“The Haunting of Bly Manor”

From horror aficionado Mike Flanagan — the director behind many epic horror films, such as “Gerald’s Game” (2017) and “Doctor Sleep” (2019) — comes this thrilling new series premiering Friday, Oct. 9, on Netflix. Victoria Pedretti (“The Haunting of Hill House”) stars as Dani Clayton, an American nanny who is hired by Henry Wingrave (Henry Thomas, “Ouija: Origin of Evil,” 2016) to look after his orphaned niece and nephew, Flora (Amelie Bea Smith, “EastEnders”) and Miles (newcomer Benjamin Evan Ainsworth), at their country home in England following the tragic and mysterious death of their last au pair. While the manor is beautiful and picturesque, Dani quickly realizes that its beauty is merely masking dark and terrible secrets. Throughout her stay at the manor, Dani meets various household staff members, including Chef Owen (Rahul Kohli, “iZombie”), Jamie (Amelia Eve, “Enterprice”) the groundskeeper and Mrs. Grose (T’Nia Miller, “The Feed”), all of whom fill her in on the building’s dreadful history. “Hubie Halloween” (2020)

Every year on Halloween, despite his being an average citizen, Hubie Dubois (Adam Sandler, “Murder Mystery,” 2019) takes pride in monitoring his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts, so that everyone can safely enjoy the holiday in this comedy premiering Wednesday, Oct. 7, on Netflix. Always on high alert for danger, Hubie has become the town joke and is constantly the subject of ridicule and pranks from Salem’s children and adults alike. Even the town’s police force, led by Sgt. Steve Downing (Kevin James, “The King of Queens”) and his deputy (Kenan Thompson, “Saturday Night Live”), don’t take Hubie seriously — especially after he came to them about issues like the supermarket selling expired bacon, the library janitor being out of character and the fact that he thinks he heard a voice coming from the sewer. But when he sees one of the townsfolk mysteriously go missing from a corn field, Hubie finds himself in the middle of a real case even though nobody believes him. Now, the one person who can protect the town is the man they least expected could ever be a hero.

“The Forty-Year-Old Version” (2020)

Radha (Radha Blank, “She’s Gotta Have It”) was always told that she had a promising future as a writer; she was even listed on a popular magazine’s “30 Under 30” list of playwrights to watch. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite work out as expected for Radha, who now

works as a teacher and has yet to write a breakthrough play, in this comedy, premiering Friday, Oct. 9, on Netflix. Now 40 years old, Radha is disheartened when she receives harsh criticism on her career from her students, the media and a colleague who claims that her work feels inauthentic. Suddenly, inspiration strikes, and Radha comes up with an unusual idea: hip hop from the perspective of a 40-year-old woman. While her friends and colleagues are skeptical of the idea (especially after witnessing her attempted rap demonstration about a “white man with a black woman’s butt”), Radha quickly develops a unique style and sound as she

goes from playwright to rapper, and she finds the words she struggled to come up with as a playwright.

Based on Clive Barker’s influential horror anthology of the same name, this unique film is set to depict three different horror stories. While Hulu is remaining tight-lipped on which of Barker’s many tales will be featured in the film, it’s safe to assume it will be appropriately terrifying, as many

adaptations of Barker’s work have become staples of the horror genre — examples include “Candyman” (1992), which is based on Barker’s tale “The Forbidden,” and the entire Hellraiser franchise, which is based on his novella “The Hellbound Heart.” This dark and twisted new film will star Britt Robertson (“For The People”), Anna Friel (“Pushing Daisies”) and Rafi Gavron (“A Star Is Born,” 2018).

In the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, there was one big topic on ev-

eryone’s mind: the space race. As 1959 came to a close, the Soviet Union was the clear front-runner and, as such, the U.S. government created NASA’s Project Mercury, ultimately bringing together the country’s top engineers to win the space race in just two short years. Based on Tom Wolfe’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name, this National Geographic miniseries premieres Friday, Oct. 9, on Disney+ and is a remake of the 1983 film version. The eight-part series follows a group of military-grade test pilots who were recruited as the first American astronauts and famously became known as the Mercury Seven. Maj. John Glenn (Patrick J. Adams, “Suits”) and Lt. Cmdr. Alan Shepard (Jake McDorman, “Limitless”) were the de facto leaders of the group, which also included prankster Wally Schirra (Aaron Staton, “Mad Men”), the highly reserved Deke Slayton (Micah Stock, “Bonding”), Scott “The Poet” Carpenter (James Lafferty, “One Tree Hill”), Lt. Gordon Cooper (Colin O’Donoghue, “Once Upon A Time”), the youngest and most surprising group member, and the stoic Gus Grissom (Michael Trotter, “Underground”). The group soon finds themselves in the public eye as they take on their mission, testing new and advanced technologies. But as time passes and various temptations and egos begin to get in the way, a battle to become the first man in space wages war between Glenn and Shepard.

Men, money and murder Italian drama, ‘Devils,’ picked up for October premiere

In a major acquisition by networks all over the world, the Sky Italia hit “Devils” will soon be making its way to audiences in the U.S. and Canada. It’s slated to premiere Thursday, Oct. 7, on CW.

This is just around the same time Season 2 of the series will be premiering on Sky Italia. While this means another shift in CW’s coronavirus-compromised time blocks, it’s a scramble worth adjusting to. While we’re not sure how the pandemic will actually affect the development of the show itself, we’ve seen so much creativity emerge in filmmaking during 2020 that we’re confident it will be just as spectacular as Season 1.

The 10-part financial dramatic thriller is full of scandal, mystery and, of course, celebrity faces we’ve been missing from our television screens for too long. The plot follows Massimo Ruggero — played by Italian-born actor Alessandro Borghi (“Suburra: Blood on Rome”) — and Dominic Morgan — portrayed by TV’s “McDreamy,” Patrick Dempsey of “Grey’s Anatomy” fame.

Ruggero is a young and incredibly successful Italian stockbroker who is generating millions of dollars for his company. Just as he finds himself in the perfect position to rise the ranks to vice-CEO, a scandal breaks out involving his ex-wife. This, unfortunately, ruins the proverbial “everything” for Ruggero.

As a result, Dominic Morgan, the U.S.-based CEO, withdraws his support for Ruggero’s promotion. And when the colleague who was promoted in his place suddenly dies, naturally, Ruggero is suspected of murder.

Taking place around the time of the 2008 stock market crash, the outlook for the rest of the story looks bleak. Pretty much anything that includes banks, financiers and lofty pride on television nowadays has a plot that ends up spiralling out of control; “Devils” is no exception.

In an effort to clear his name, Ruggero uncovers a political plot that only serves to deepen the ongoing European financial crisis. And though North American audiences have yet to see the juicy Sky Italia production, the teaser trailer for the series explains it all, from the corporate scenery and the stock charts to good-looking people in business attire sliding papers across the table.

Oh, and we can’t forget the kiss of death, the sound of a bullet shell dropping, handshakes and betrayal — it’s everything we want in a drama and more.

Audiences will not only catch a glimpse of the absolute mass and corruption of money but will dive deep into the characters themselves and their personal lives.

Joining Borghi and Dempsey is a star ensemble: Laia Costa (“Foodie Love”), Paul Chowdhry (“Swinging with the Finkels,” 2011), Sallie Harmsen (“The Postcard Killings,” 2020), Malachi Kirby (“Curfew”), Pia Mechler (“Adam Bloom,” 2020) and Harry Michell (“Yesterday,” 2019).

Dempsey has been absent from American TV screens for a while, and his return is much anticipated. Last year, when the series first premiered on Sky Italia, Dempsey expressed how happy he was to work on an international story. Eyeing it as a passion project, he had no idea that it would be brought over to the States when filming began, but its energy and originality has proven magnetic as the show has been sent to more than 160 countries.

Perhaps even more refreshing for audiences, as it was for Dempsey, “Devils” is not a U.S.-centric banking story — it is a completely different perspective.

On the same note, the series is also a deviation from the norm for Borghi: this marks his first English-speaking role and is also the first time he’s had to grapple with financial lingo. Being in a new world presented a daunting challenge for the actor, but he rose above it to give us quite an enticing and believable performance.

If you haven’t noticed already, “Devils” is a pretty far cry from the average CW lineup. The network is tossing its teen-focused content this time for a more ma-

ture premise, raising its caliber of acting and plot structure to a whole new level.

You can further count on the strength of the show’s plot since it was based on Guido Maria Brera’s 2014 novel, “I diavoli.” Brera’s book drew much of its realistic tension from actual events surrounding the 2008 economic crisis, and it’s clear from critics and audience reviews that the same tension shines through onscreen as well.

It’s the show’s credibility that keeps viewers wanting more, so it comes as no surprise that Brera was included on the writing team for the series.

“Devils” was developed by Sky Studios, the same company that brought us “Britannia” and “Gangs of London.” The show originally

aired in April 2020 in Italy but has since been distributed around the globe by NBC Universal. Directed by Jan Michelini (“Don Matteo”) and Nick Hurran (“Sherlock”), “Devils” is produced by Orange Studio and Lux Vide.

Since the show wasn’t in the original lineup for CW, the hourlong episodes will be replacing “Two Sentence Horror Stories.” But don’t worry. “Two Sentence Horror Stories” is getting an all-new, backto-back time-slot on the network Saturday nights.

If you loved movies like “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013) or “The Big Short” (2015), you won’t want to miss this international thriller. You can catch the first season of “Devils” when it premieres Wednesday, Oct. 7, on CW.
