Juliette Lewis returns as Andrea Cornell in ‘Secrets and Lies’
By Kyla Brewer TV MediaThere’s nothing like a murder mystery to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Television writers spin tales of tangled webs all the time, but not all of them make it past the first season.
One fall drama is enjoying a second kick at the can as determined detective Andrea Cornell (Juliette Lewis, “Cape Fear,” 1991) tries to solve another case in a new episode of “Secrets and Lies,” airing Sunday, Oct. 16, on ABC. The first season of the ABC drama costarred Ryan Phillippe (“Cruel Intentions,” 1999) as Ben Crawford, who was the prime suspect in the death of a young boy.
Season 2 chronicles a completely different case involving the murder of a beautiful young woman. Unlike a lot of TV dramas that follow the same storyline season after season, “Secrets and Lies” is an anthology series with several new characters and a whole new plot. Introducing a new mystery could be risky, but the show is in good hands with Lewis, who’s been known to take a few risks herself. Renowned for her range, actress and rocker Lewis has played everything from a mentally challenged young woman in “The Other Sister” (1999) to a homicidal maniac in “Natural Born Killers” (1994).
She’s taken on yet another challenge in “Secrets and Lies” as she portrays buttoned-up Det. Cornell. She talked about her part during a recent appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
“This role is so different from anything I’ve ever done because she’s unemotional and you have to be in that line of work,” explained Lewis, who went on to rave about her co-stars: “I’m so proud of my cast!”
That new cast includes Michael Ealy (“Barbershop,” 2002) as Eric Warner, a well-educated man on the verge of taking control of his family’s private equity firm in Charlotte, North Carolina. Unfortunately, his good fortune takes a turn for the worse when his new wife, Kate (Jordana Brewster, “The Fast and the Furious,” 2001), turns up dead during a party celebrating his success. Ealy started out performing in off-Broadway productions before getting his big break on the big screen in “Barbershop.” He’s also appeared in such films as “2 Fast 2 Furious” (2003) and “Seven Pounds” (2008), as well as in the television series “Flashforward” and “The Good Wife.”
Cornell is immediately suspicious of Warner, but, of course, his family has plenty of secrets as well. Terry O’Quinn (“Lost”) portrays Eric’s charming father, John, who built his company on a strong foundation of honesty and morality. Kate’s death casts a shadow on his company and its future.
O’Quinn is best known as John Locke in J.J. Abrams’s “Lost,” but he’s been working steadily in the industry for decades, having appeared in such movies as “Young Guns” (1988), “Tombstone” (1993) and “The Rocketeer” (1991). His television credits include “Alias,” “JAG” and “Hawaii Five-0.”
Actress and dancer Mekia Cox (“90210”) plays Eric’s sister, Amanda. A criminal attorney for the public defender’s office, Amanda is very familiar with Cornell, and is fiercely protective of Eric as a result. Cox appeared as a dancer in the Michael Jackson concert series “This Is It,” and like O’Quinn, she has a connection to Abrams, having had a role in his canceled spy drama “Undercovers.”
The supporting cast also includes Charlie Barnett as Patrick, Eric and Amanda’s younger brother. Barnett is no stranger to television audiences, who may recognize him as firefighter/paramedic Peter Mills from NBC’s “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.”
Kenny Johnson has joined the cast of “Secrets and Lies” as a character named Danny, another potential suspect in Kate’s death. With roles in some of television’s hottest dramas, Johnson has been a virtual fixture in prime time for several years, and has had memorable appearances in such series as “The Shield,” “Cold Case,” “Saving Grace,” “Sons of Anarchy,” “Burn Notice” and “Dexter.”
The suspects aren’t the only ones with secrets in “Secrets and Lies.” Everyone seems to have something to hide, even Cornell. As the season wears on, Cornell will be forced to deal with her own dark revelations.
Based on Stephen Irwin’s Australian television series of the same name, ABC’s “Secrets and Lies” was developed for North American audiences by Barbie Kligman (“Private Practice”). As a producer and writer, Kligman has
also had a hand in such primetime successes as “The Vampire Diaries,” “CSI: NY” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” Aaron Kaplan (“The Mysteries of Laura”), Tracey Robertson (“The Strange Calls”) and Nathan Mayfield (“Texas Rising: The Lost Soldier”) also serve as executive producers. ABC offers fans even more content through the online companion series “Cornell Confidential.” Available each week immediately following the show’s East Coast broadcast on ABC.com/SecretsandLies and the ABC app, the program features an in-depth look at the investigation, as well as additional clues, scenes and sometimes cliffhangers.
While critical reviews of the first season of “Secrets and Lies” were mixed, the show consistently drew more than five million viewers, no small feat in today’s cutthroat primetime landscape.
Lewis and her new castmates have all sorts of new twists and turns to keep viewers intrigued this season. Check out a new episode of “Secrets and Lies,” airing Sunday, Oct. 16, on ABC.

To paraphrase a rather famous marketing slogan: It isn’t easy being cheesy. Well, as Sarah Sharratt is discovering in her new French home, that saying isn’t exactly true in every country.
The American-born and suburbia-raised mother of two is a bona fide cheese lover, and now that
she’s living in the French countryside, she’s surrounded by some of the best in the world.
The other thing that she’s surrounded by is TV cameras. “UpRooted,” which premiered Oct. 1 and continues to air Saturdays on Cooking Channel, follows the Cordon Bleu-trained chef as she adjusts to her new home in a foreign land, with a particular focus on French food and food culture.
Along with her two kids, three dogs and flock of chickens, she’s using the rural French countryside to find the ingredients and inspiration for her culinary creations.
In this week’s episode, airing Saturday, Oct. 22, Sarah has some of her new friends over for a seasonally appropriate meal. It’s springtime in the French countryside (in this episode, at least), and she’s serving up dishes using local ingredients.
How does freshly picked white asparagus with sauce gribiche (a mayonnaise-like, egg-based dressing) served along with a freshly made duck pate and finished with a lemon posset (a sweet and frothy milk-based drink) sound?
It’s a midday meal that just screams “French countryside,” but while Sarah lives far from the cosmopolitan bustle of the country’s big cities, she’s also keeping her finger on the pulse of what’s happening there.
Next week, she visits Paris to check out the famous city’s modern food scene. She heads to the markets and checks out luxury food shops to get a taste for what sorts of foods Parisians are enjoying — she even gets a private cooking lesson from one of the city’s hottest chefs!
It’s definitely been a culture shock for the American to move to the rural part of a country where she doesn’t even speak the language well, but the language of food is universal — plus there’s always the cheese. A new episode of Sarah Sharratt’s “UpRooted” airs Saturday, Oct. 22, on Cooking Channel.

Media experts say Monday night’s presidential debate will have a Super Bowl-sized TV audience. Of course, the Super Bowl audience drinks for fun, while Monday’s debate audience will be drinking out of sheer terror.
Six members of the cast of “The West Wing” are going to campaign for Hillary Clinton at an event in Ohio. The move
has backfired though. Now everyone in Ohio is voting for Martin Sheen.

Mark Zuckerberg’s wife, Priscilla, says their 10-month-old daughter won’t be allowed to sign up for Facebook until she’s 13 because “she has to follow the rules.” That is SO sweet that she thinks teens will still be into Facebook in 13 years.
