NBC brings back ‘The Voice’

19 of “The Voice” is finally set to air Monday, Oct. 19, on NBC. The show was originally meant to begin in the spring but was pushed back, like many others, due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Fans have been unsure for months if the show would even return and, if so, how.

“The Voice” returns with host Carson Daly (“Last Call with Carson Daly”) live at its usual time, every Monday and Tuesday. If you can’t make it, don’t stress; the full episodes go online the following day on NBC’s website. And if you’re behind the times on this musical phenomenon, you can download the NBC app to watch anywhere or, if you are a Hulu subscriber, the full seasons are available, too.

After a tweet from NBC announcing the new season, teasers have been popping up all over social media. The judges returning to the show are country star Blake Shelton, singer-songwriter John Legend, pop star Gwen Stefani and the original “American Idol,” Kelly Clarkson. Back for her fifth season in the red chair, Stefani has been a sporadic judge over the past several years. Last seen in Season 17, she took a two-season break and was replaced with musician and actor Nick Jonas (“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” 2017). While fans are asking why

The only judge who has sustained all 19 seasons is Shelton, while Clarkson is in her sixth season and Legend in his fourth on the panel. Shelton also has an impressive record as a seven-time winning coach, with Clarkson trailing behind at three wins and Legend only one.

As for Season 19 mentors, NBC is holding tight to that list and has given no hints for whom it plans to bring on. What we do know is that the network always goes big when it comes to getting the stars. Last season featured singers Ella Mai, Dua Lipa, Bebe Rexha, the Jonas Brothers and even powerhouse icon James Taylor.

As with most television series, reality TV was severely impacted by the coronavirus shutdowns, and “The Voice” was no exception. The end of Season 18 was interrupted by the health concerns right in the middle of the live shows. They man aged to finish the season through video calls at home and saw Todd Tilghman from Team Blake take the crown. Now, after months of reruns and vague promises of even tual returns, we can finally look forward to something new in our lineup!

From clips and trailers that have been released for the upcoming season, it is clear that there will be no live studio audience this season but, much like the most recent season of “America’s Got Talent,” there will be a live video wall behind the judges — fans were given the opportunity to sign up to be a part of a digital audience, video calling in from their own homes.

In one promo, Stefani explains that she and Shelton have been quarantining together, with Legend cheekily responding, “I’m sorry, Gwen.”

Based on the classic gothic fiction novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier, this 2020 film, directed by Ben Wheatley (“High-Rise,” 2015) is — like the Oscar-winning 1940 Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece — an original take on the 1938 source material. Hungry for horror this Halloween?

You’re in luck. The terrifying Norwegian film “Cadaver” is coming to a screen near you on Thursday, Oct. 22, courtesy of the popular streaming service Netflix. Following a tragic nuclear disaster that left many hungry and scrounging for their next meals, a three-person family takes up a mysterious offer

for a fancy dinner in exchange for their involvement in a play for charity at a local hotel. Upon their arrival, the host (Thorbjørn Harr, “Vikings”) distributes a mask to each participant and sets the parameters for the production about to begin. When the night kicks off, however, and their daughter, Alice (budding actress Tuva Olivia Remmen), goes missing, her parents, Leonora (Gitte Witt, “The Sleepwalker,” 2014) and Jacob (Thomas Gullestad, “The 12th Man,” 2017), begin to suspect a different, more sinister, reason behind the swanky gathering. This dark commentary on human nature and the cutthroat quest for survival was directed by rising star Jarand Herdal (“Everywhen,” 2013).

“The Queen’s Gambit” Get ready to plot your next move with “The Queen’s Gambit,” premiering Friday, Oct. 23, on Netflix. This six-part miniseries, which comes from the mind of acclaimed novelist Walter Tevis — the author behind the “The Hustler” (1961), “The Man Who Fell to Earth” (1976) and “The Color of Money” (1986) — paints a seedy picture of the underworld of chess. Set in Cold War-era Kentucky, Beth Harmon’s (Anya Taylor-Joy, “The Witch,” 2015) parents brought her up to believe that she is just as powerful as any man. When she suddenly becomes orphaned at the age of 8, young Beth channels her life into playing chess, learning how to dominate the game with each precisely calculated move of a wooden piece. “Bad Hair” (2020)

If you thought you were having a bad hair day, think again. “Bad Hair,” the new horror-comedy from the mind behind “Dear White People,” is premiering exclusively on Hulu, Friday, Oct. 23. When she feels pressured by societal standards to get a weave to fit into her new job in music television, Anna (Elle Lorraine, “Insecure”) begins to experience some strange and unexplained events. As time goes on and her situation worsens, it becomes clear that Anna’s hair is fighting back in a very otherworldly way. Worse yet, her new hairstyle might just come at the cost of the swanky job she was trying so hard to keep.

Justin Simeon (“Rings,” 2006) wrote and directed this darkly comedic social-commentary film that also stars big names Jay Pharaoh (“Saturday Night Live”), James Van Der Beek (“Dawson’s Creek”) and Lena Waithe (“Master of None”).

“Cyrano, My Love” (2019) Fall in love with the theater this month as “Cyrano, My Love,” a comedy about a comedy, comes Wednesday, Oct. 21, to Hulu. French playwright Edmond Rostand (portrayed by Thomas Solivérès, “Sales gosses,” 2017) has it all; well, if you consider “having it all” to mean two kids, ridicule from his friends, a world of anxiety and a failing career. Desperate not to live with his writer’s block any longer,

the origin story, we have reason to believe that the film will finally explain, among other things, why the winter-dwelling character loves summer so much. Written and directed by Trent Correy (“Moana,” 2016) and Dan Abraham (“Space Jam,” 1996), both of whom worked on Olaf’s “Frozen 2” animation, this second Olaf short also features the returning voices of “Frozen” stars Idina Menzel as Elsa, Kristen Bell (“Veronica Mars”) as Anna, Jonathan Groff (“Hamilton,” 2020) as Kristoff, and Frank Welker (“Wizards”) as the faithful reindeer, Sven.

So, you think you can spot a phony? Learn to separate the truth from the lies in the family-friendly game show “The Big Fib,” airing 15 new episodes Friday, Oct. 23, on Disney+. Young contestants face off against two adults who claim to be the expert in a particular field. What’s the catch? One of these so-called “experts” is lying, and it is up to the kid to figure out who it is. Once the fibber has been properly identified, they are subjected to a ritual foaming as their punishment. From popular reality show producers Josh Halpert (“The Floor is Lava”), Leigh Hampton (“Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”) and “Camp Getaway” duo Irad Eyal and Aaron Rothman, “The Big Fib” stars Yvette Nicole Brown (“Community”) as the host and Rhys Darby (“Flight of the Conchords”) as her brainy robot sidekick, C.L.I.V.E.

Get in on the action and escape to Uttar Pradesh, India, for the weekend by binge-watching “Mirzapur,” back for a second season on Friday, Oct. 23, on Prime. Everyone’s favorite Indian crime-thriller series returns for another nine-episode season that is sure to be just as action-packed as the first. Centered around government corruption, mafia plots and featuring a lot of guns, drugs and crime, “Mirzapur” captivated its audiences when Season 1 premiered back in 2018. Now, after a full season worth of deceit, doublecrosses and death, Season 2 will bring to light the consequences of the first season’s actions. Both Golu (Shweta Tripathi, “The Trip”) and Guddu (Ali Fazal, “Victoria & Abdul,” 2017) team up for some mutually beneficial revenge, while Sharad (Anjum Sharma, “Slumdog Millionaire,” 2008) has some plans of his own. Meanwhile, Munna (Divyendu Sharma, “Chashme Baddoor,” 2013) will have to be wary of his father’s punishment as the proverbial pendulum swings back following his failure to take over the family business. This popular Hindi-language series was created by showrunners Karan Anshuman and Puneet Krishna, both of “Inside Edge” and “Bangistan” (2015) fame.

Sky high comedy ‘The Goldbergs’ pays tribute to ‘Airplane!’

Wouldn’t it be great to travel back in time? While time travel may not be possible (yet!), those wistful for the past often turn to television for a nostalgic look back. Take heart, ‘80s fans — it’s time to revisit the totally radical days of big hair, mixtapes and neon everything.

Sean Giambrone (“Kim Possible,” 2019) returns as teenager and aspiring filmmaker Adam Goldberg, who shares adventures with his wacky, dysfunctional family in the Season 8 premiere of “The Goldbergs,” airing Wednesday, Oct. 21, on ABC. Inspired by the real life of creator Adam F. Goldberg, the comedy is narrated by Patton Oswalt (“The King of Queens”) as “adult Adam” in present day, à la Daniel Stern (“Home Alone,” 1990) as an “adult Kevin” narrating the ‘80s TV classic, “The Wonder Years.”

Just as “The Wonder Years” whisked TV viewers away to the late 1960s and early 1970s, “The Goldbergs” transports viewers to an era known for breakdancing, New Wave music and some pretty extreme fashions. Through Adam’s eyes, fans get to know his family and friends as he faces all sorts of adolescent milestones.

This season, fan favorite Wendi McLendon-Covey (“Bridesmaids,” 2011) returns as family matriarch Beverly, who is so overzealously overprotective that she’s been dubbed “Smother” by her children.

In contrast, Jeff Garlin (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) portrays gruff patriarch Murray, who often calls his kids morons. Adam’s overconfident yet goofy older brother, Barry, a character inspired by the real-life Goldberg’s brother of the same name, is played by Troy Gentile (“Hotel for Dogs,” 2009). Hayley Orrantia (“The X Factor”) plays the eldest of the Goldberg siblings, Erica, a sarcastic, rebellious musician.

Entertainment industry veteran George Segal (“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” 1966) rounds out the family as Beverly’s father, Pops, an eccentric widower who often doles out sage advice to his grandkids.

As in other seasons of the show,

Season 8 will feature plenty of ‘80s nostalgia. The comedy is famous for incorporating memorable ‘80s songs, movies, fashions and more, much to the delight of its fans. In July, news broke that the upcoming season would kick off with a nod to the 1980 classic parody film “Airplane!” Fans are surely in for a treat, as the cast has a reputation for rocking such tributes, having riffed on iconic ‘80s movies such as “Risky Business” (1983), “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983), “Sixteen Candles” (1984), “The Breakfast Club” (1985) and “Weird Science” (1985). As reported on ew. com, during the Comic-Con@Home panel, “The Goldbergs’” executive producer Doug Robinson referred to the “Airplane!” episode, saying: “The only thing crazier than having dinner with the Goldbergs is taking an airplane ride with the Goldbergs.”

It sounds like Season 8 will be full of other funny Goldberg moments, too. This time around, Beverly is faced with an almost-empty nest as Erica and Barry are off to college. That leaves her to throw herself into meddling in the life of her only “schmoopie” left at home, Adam. For his part, Adam will continue to deal with social anxieties as a nerdy upperclassman, run afoul of bullies and maybe even get a shot at romance. Meanwhile, Barry sets out to reinvent himself at college as he tries to move on from his love, Lainey (AJ Michalka, “Schooled”), and Erica decides to actually try to succeed in school now that her rock star dreams have been dashed. Luckily, her goofy boyfriend, Geoff (Sam Lerner, “Truth of Dare,” 2018), is around for support. All the while, now that his kids are growing up, Murray begins to realize that perhaps he should have tried harder as a father. There should be no shortage of Goldberg antics for viewers to enjoy this season, but it’s a wonder there’s an eighth season at all. Like just about every other television production in North America, the show was forced to stop filming in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That led to a casting shakeup as Kelli Berglund (“Lab Rats”),

who joined the cast in Season 7 as Erica’s friend Ren, had committed to other another major project and couldn’t continue filming “The Goldbergs” when it booted up again. The part had to be recast, so Carrie Wampler (“Big Little Lies”) will play Ren in Season 8.

As the old saying goes, the show must go on, and, luckily, “The Gold-

bergs” is safe for another season, unlike its spinoff, “Schooled.” Set in the 1990s and featuring Michalka’s Lainey as the school’s new music teacher, “Schooled” unfortunately failed to grab audiences the way its predecessor did and was cancelled in May after two seasons.

It’s a fate that might have befallen “The Goldbergs” when it first

started. While the show wasn’t initially well received by many critics when it debuted in 2013, it’s grown in popularity over the years and now ranks as one of the most successful family comedies in prime time. The ratings have slightly declined over the past seven seasons, but it’s held fairly steady, averaging 5.31 million viewers in Season 7

compared to 6.2 million in the first season.

As rerun-weary TV fans clamor for fresh comedy, the show just might have a banner year. Don’t miss back-to-back new episodes as the cast spoofs “Airplane!” in the Season 8 premiere of “The Goldbergs,” airing Wednesday, Oct. 21, on ABC.
