Murder on the Strip ABC’s new crime
By Jacqueline Spendlove TV MediaCrime drama anthologies are in their heyday just now. With the critical acclaim garnered from Emmy-winning shows such as HBO’s “True Detective” and FX’s “Fargo,” not to mention the BAFTA- and Peabody-winning British series “Broadchurch,” it’s no surprise that more and more showrunners are taking a stab at the format.
ABC found great mainstream success earlier this year with “American Crime,” starring Timothy Hutton (“Leverage”) and Felicity Huffman (“Desperate Housewives”). The show raked in 10 Emmy nominations and one win and, according to critic Dominic Patten in a Deadline review, “marks a resounding flag-planting by network television and tells cable that it doesn’t own poignant drama on our small screens.”
No doubt looking to duplicate that success and keep the flag waving, the alphabet network is launching a new crime anthology series this month. “Wicked City” premieres Tuesday, Oct. 27, on ABC.
The freshman season takes place amongst the glitz, neon lights and big hair of 1982 Sunset Strip. Ed Westwick brings his devious charm back to the small screen in his first television role since that of filthyrich bad boy Chuck Bass in The CW’s “Gossip Girl.” He leads “Wicked City’s” season 1 cast as Kent Grainger, a dashing young man whose good looks and charm hide something much darker.
As creator Steven Baigelman said during the show’s Television Critics Association panel, early ‘80s Los Angeles “was both the murder capital of the country and also the serial killer capital of the country. People come for fame and recognition, not only to be actors and musicians, but somehow, oddly, serial killers came here as well for that same reason.”
In the dimly lit bars and clubs of Sunset Strip, Grainger connects with ambitious young women, posing as a Hollywood bigwig who can help launch them to stardom. When he gains their trust and gets them to a secluded area, he kills them.
“It was a very loud era,” said se-

crimes and characters, though some of the cast will appear from season to season.

The two finally hit a break in the case when they encounter Karen McClaren (Taissa Farmiga, “American Horror Story”), a struggling young journalist looking to write a story on Sunset Strip, and who witnessed one of Kent’s victims leaving a club one night before being murdered. Having met Kent and given him her number, she’ll now be used as bait to try to draw in the killer.
Evan Ross (“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1,” 2014) rounds out the show’s cast as Karen’s boss, Diver Hawkes, a crime scene paparazzo, while Karolina Wydra (“Crazy, Stupid, Love.,” 2011) plays Dianne Kubek, Jack’s former flame currently working as an undercover detective on Sunset Strip.
The whole of the first season will follow this one case as the killers carry out their nefarious deeds and the detectives work to catch those responsible. The seasons that follow will look at entirely different
“We will be doing one case per season,” Baigelman said during the TCA panel, “and some of our characters will find their stories ending in this season, and some of our characters will be moving on to another time and another place and another case.”
With each season taking place in a different decade, the show aims to provide a strong sense of time and place. Historical accuracy is a must for the producers, and judging by the trailer alone, season 1 positively screams of the ‘80s.
“It’s really important to us to bring in the real world into our fiction and bring out fiction into the real world,” Baigelman said during the TCA tour. “When you watch the show, you’re not going to watch it from the place of nostalgia, you’re actually going to feel like they’re there.”
There’s nothing like a good murder mystery, and “Wicked City” sounds no less enticing for knowing whodunit from the get-go. The crime drama anthology premieres Tuesday, Oct. 27, on ABC.

Rise and shine, it’s breakfast time!
Let’s see, I’ll take four slices of bacon (just a little bit crispy), two eggs (poached, if possible), a big glass of orange juice (freshly squeezed, please), a couple of slices of toast (sourdough preferred) and a big stack of pancakes (with real maple syrup — none of that imitation stuff). Oh yeah, and don’t forget the coffee — and lots of it!
It’s big, it’s hearty, and it’s the most important meal of the day. Or is it?
That’s the big question being asked on “Food: Fact or Fiction,”
Cooking Channel’s new show, premiering Monday, Oct. 26, and airing Monday evenings.
Hosted by actor and Grammywinning musician Michael McKean (“This Is Spinal Tap,” 1984), each episode of “Food: Fact or Fiction” will tackle some of the adages and factoids that “everybody knows” about the foods that we eat every day.
As for breakfast, once McKean checks out the science to see if the day’s first meal is also its most important, he’ll also be exploring just how the classic American breakfast came to be. After all, as any international traveler can attest, the big, hearty and meaty breakfast that’s the norm
here is far from typical around the world.
Speaking of other countries, there will even be a whole episode devoted to the origins of international dishes. Ever wondered if french fries are really from France? What about Chinese fortune cookies? Sure, every Chinese buffet hands them out at the end of a meal, but are they really from China — or are they an entirely American invention?
If there’s someone who would never lie to us, it’s our moms. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” “chicken soup is good for a cold,” “carrots are good for your eyes” — so many of us grew up with these little tidbits of wisdom coming from
our mothers, but how true are they, really? There will be an entire episode devoted to fact-checking our moms to see if those health claims really stand up to the latest science.
Of course, it’s not really lying if our mothers actually believed what they were saying is true — and besides, even if apples don’t act as doctor repellent, choosing them for snacks instead of something unhealthy couldn’t have been a bad idea.
Find out which food facts that “everybody knows” are actually facts — and which are rotting chunks of untruth — with “Food: Fact or Fiction,” premiering Monday, Oct. 26, on Cooking Channel.

In the year 1982, a time capsule containing a videocassette of a video game tournament is launched into space and soon forgotten about by the kids who participated in the tournament. Now, two of those kids’ lives have gone in different directions: one is the president of the United States (James), while the other is a home theater installer (Sandler). When giant video game characters from the 1980s attack Earth, confusion reigns
until it’s realized that the extraterrestrials must have accessed the time capsule and are using the pixilated game characters as models for their weapons. With Earth’s armed forces losing every battle, the president recruits his childhood arcade buddies to anticipate the aliens’ tactics and save the planet from pixilated destruction.
