Spring sports return after 2020 cancellation By Dan Determan Staff Writer
2019-20 school year. It was an unprecedented decision. The entire world Spring is finally in the air. was wrapped in uncertainty For the first time in almost two years, the Patriots and at the time, so it was perhaps understandable, but to have Tigers are set to take to the baseball, softball, track and diamond, the track and the field, golf and trap shooting links. simply not take place one Last April - when the spring is a truly unique situCOVID-19 pandemic first ation - one we will likely, and began to take hold in the state hopefully, never see again. and in the lakes area, closing And so, thoughts of the schools and businesses - the spring of 2020 are filled Minnesota State High School with what-ifs. Would Pine League announced that all River-Backus’s Brady Raph activities and athletics that have capped his stellar high occur during the spring sea- school golf career with a state son would be canceled for the championship? How would a
respectable Patriot boys golf team have finished? What might we have seen from the Patriot track and field teams after a very successful 2019 season? We will never know. It’s like being enthralled in a good book, only to get to the end and find the last page has been torn out. Of course, one has to feel for the class of 2020 - a group of passionate athletes who lost their senior seasons because of circumstances far beyond their control - but I think it is important to remember that the spring of 2020 affected all
athletes. Yes, the senior class was the one to end on a sour note, but the underclassmen also lost an entire season of a sport they love and missed out on some valuable experiences and positive memories in the process. Competitively, there may be some notable ramifications as well. I would argue that varsity experience is one of the most valuable things a team can have. Since this year’s seniors were sophomores the last time Pequot Lakes and PR-B fielded teams, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to
think varsity experience may be a hard commodity to come by this spring. Regardless, athletes, coaches and fans can all take solace in the simple fact that spring sports are actually happening this year. After the cancellation of sports last spring, the uncertainty of sports in the fall and the delayed start to the winter seasons, I think it is safe to say nothing in high school sports is being taken for granted. So join me in wishing the Tigers and Patriots a spring free of injuries and inclement weather, and full of success.

then you get it back, you learn to appreciate what you had even more,” Guenther said. “That sums it up best for being able to have a track season this year.” The Patriots are scheduled to open the season by hosting Nevis, Staples-Motley and Walker-HackensackAkeley on Friday, April 16. The True Team Section meet is Tuesday, May 4, at a location to be determined. The Mid-State Conference boys’ meet will be Tuesday, May 11, at

Young Patriots look to learn quickly A young Pequot Lakes Patriots baseball team will need to be “quick learners” this spring, especially after COVID19 canceled last season. “We will have a young team this year, with only four seniors, and are coming in with a lot to learn over the course
of the season,” said Pequot Lakes coach Jon Kotaksa, who is starting his ninth season as head coach. “Missing the 2020 season has put a lot of teams in a situation where players will need to learn quickly, and gather experience that they would have gained last year.”
Kotaska added that the Patriots “will also be looking at players in a lot of positions to see where everyone can succeed and help the team” this spring. “We will also be working to develop as many pitchers as we can in a short time to take
the strain off pitching arms in the early part of the season,” Kotaska said. Returning letterwinners for Pequot Lakes are Erik Larsen and Nik Kotaska. Others who could contribute are Alex Morgan, Cole Trottier, Sam Rysavy, Robbie Stephens and
Evin Ruud. The Patriots finished 8-2 in the Mid-State Conference and 13-8 overall in 2019. Pequot Lakes was scheduled to open at home against Upsala on Friday, April 2. The Section 6A playoffs are scheduled to begin Tuesday, June 1.

Tigers return 4 letterwinners The Pine River-Backus Tigers baseball coach Mike Dinnel said that his team is excited to be back on the field after losing the 2020 season to COVID-19. “It has been two years since we’ve had baseball, and our players are eager to be back playing,” said Dinnel, who has compiled a 30-25 record in four seasons as PR-B’s head coach. “We are a young and inexperienced team, but we have good athletes who are willing and wanting to improve every day. These kids love competing, which makes me optimistic about our season and program.” Returning letterwinners are Nolan Olivier,
Trevor Redding, Owen Carlson and Dalton Middendorf. Others who could contribute include: Irvin Tulenchik, Corbin Knapp, Rian Struss, Ethan Rugroden, Ryder Compton and Konnor King. Ben Kinser and Jake Volk are assistant coaches for the Tigers, who finished 4-5 in the Northland Conference and 6-9 overall in 2019. PR-B is scheduled to open the season by hosting Laporte on Tuesday, April 13. The regular season is scheduled to end May 21 at Bertha-Hewitt. The Tigers will then compete in the Section 6A playoffs.

Top pitchers return to the mound for Patriots The Pequot Lakes Patriots softball team returns two pitchers, junior Morgan Eckes, and sophomore Kaitlyn Geschwill, who combined for 12 wins and 93 strikeouts in the 2019 season. That pitching experience is a valuable asset since last season was canceled because of COVID-19.
“We return our top two pitchers in Morgan and Kaitlyn,” Patriots coach Bret Sergent said of Eckes and Geschwill, who also had the top two batting averages for Pequot Lakes in 2019. “The returning players’ experience will be important in helping us achieve our goals and expectations after not
being able to play in 2020.” Eckes compiled a 7-4 record with a 4.78 earned-run average and 57 strikeouts in 74 ⅔ innings during the 2019 season, while Geschwill had a 5-1 record with a 2.46 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 37 innings. “We also have experienced players helping to
lead us in seniors Afton Crocker, Rita and Catherine Ganley, as well as junior Maya Orvis,” Sergent said of the letterwinners. Crocker compiled a .327 batting average while driving in 19 runs in 2019. Rita Ganley batted .205 with 11 walks, 12 runs scored and five stole bases. Orvis bat-

At the 2019 Section 6A meet, Marcum finished tied for sixth place in the high jump and was 10th in the triple jump while O’Dell was ninth in the pole vault. “These are the athletes with the most experience, but we’re expecting contributions from many others, including senior Malachi Wipper,” said PR-B coach Tom Demars, who is assisted by Justin Franke. lager. The Subsection 6A meet will be Thursday, May 20, at Pequot Lakes.

Seeling to lead Patriot boys The Pequot Lakes boys golf team will be led this season by junior Tyler Seeling, who finished 15th at the Class A state meet in 2019 and then played in the National High School Invitational last August at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. “Tyler will be our leader, and has a lot of competitive experience,” Pequot Lakes coach Steve Stoxen said of Seel-
ing, who was one of just three area golfers to play in the national tournament. “The rest of our team has some really good athletes, but not a lot of varsity golf familiarity. It truly takes a while for golfers to learn how to score under competitive circumstances.” Hunter Nybakken and Quady Bernu also lettered for Pequot Lakes in 2019 before the 2020 season was cancelled
because of COVID-19. Others who could contribute this spring are Joey Dott and Ethan Thomas. Robert Fischer and Tyler Gognion are assistant coaches under Stoxen, who is starting his 35th year as head coach. “We are looking forward to the opportunity to compete again after missing last season,” said Stoxen,
whose team is scheduled to open at Blackberry Ridge in Sartell on Monday, April 19. The section 6-2A meet is scheduled for Monday, June 7, also at Blackberry Ridge. Barchus returns for Tiger golf The Pine River-Backus Tigers golfer Hannah Barchus will set her sights on returning to the Class A state girls golf meet this spring. The sophomore competed at state in 2019 before last season was cancelled due to COVID19. “We graduated three seniors from the 2019 team that was Section 6A and Northern Pines Conference runners-up,” said PR-B head coach Mark Gonnion, who added that Cate Travis is also a sophomore letterwinner. “Cate also takes aim on a possible trip to the state meet. Both Hannah and Cate have gained another year of growth and experience on the course.” Another player who could contribute this spring is eighth-grader Kassidy Bristow, who Gonnion said will
“develop as a valuable contributor for our team.” Junior high players include: Molly Lupella, Katlyn Burns and Jovi Borland. “We will be competing mainly as individuals this season as we work to rebuild our varsity team,” said Gonnion, who has coached 26 seasons of golf. Rick Aulie is an assistant coach for the Tigers. PR-B is scheduled to open the season Tuesday, April 13, at Park Rapids. The Section 6A meet will be June 1-2 in Perham.
