WEEKEND WEDDING CELEBRATION AT PINE PEAKS WEDDING AND EVENT CENTER
BY SHEILA HELMBERGER What if you could spend your entire wedding weekend celebrating with your friends and family at a beautiful, private, 80-acre gated estate? With Pine Peaks Wedding and Event Center near Crosslake, owner Dave Peterson and his wife, Julie, have created a wedding resort that offers a true destination wedding. Secluded, away from everything, they make it possible to wake up the morning of your vows and have a cup of coffee and relax instead of running around from place to place picking up items you’ve rented. The Petersons supply almost anything a wedding couple might need. “We furnish the tables, chairs, linens, chair covers, and skirting in multiple colors. Chair sashes and table runners in 24 colors plus an entire storage room filled with decorations. “Most people don’t have to haul much at all,” he says. Set up is done by the wedding party and take down is done by staff at Pine Peaks. The Property Peterson gives each couple an extensive tour of the property when they meet – and there’s a lot to see. The property, owned by four generations of Petersons, offers a view from every deck and porch of serene beauty. It’s a photographer’s dream of rolling hills, corn fields and flowers. Two sites for the ceremony include your choice of arbors and each is surrounded by wildflower and perennial gardens. There’s a bubbling rock, and a pond with Koi fish in the spring through warm fall months.
The seasons in lake country can change quickly, sometimes overnight. Raising or lowering tent walls and utilizing heaters or fans, you can create your idea temperature and make the atmosphere as cozy or as open as you’d like. The Big Day Pine Peaks Wedding and Event Center partners with Maucieri’s Restaurant in Crosslake for catering services. The wedding couple and staff will work together to create the reception menu. “We allow customers to bring their own desserts and snacks for their reception,” says Peterson. Parking spaces are available for many motorhomes with power, sewer and water hookups. Delivery, setup and removal for RV rentals can be arranged. The Retreat House “Just about every couple uses our retreat house,” says Peterson. Across a pathway from the event center is a 5,000-square foot home with five bedrooms, four bathrooms and a loft with four more beds. “Typically, the wedding party and a few friends will stay here and have a nice time together for several days.” The master suite includes a Jacuzzi and a see-through fireplace. Also on site? A two-chair hair and makeup salon, a pool table, and laundry facilities. The home features a gourmet kitchen, screened porch, pool table, games, an outdoor sauna and a propane fire pit.
The Petersons know your wedding is more than just one really big day. It’s a weekend affair and the house is available to rent to couples from Thursday until Monday. A block of up to 28 rooms is available from Pine Peaks Lodge and Suites in Crosslake with shuttle service available to and from the reception. Extras After rehearsal, just move your wedding party into a space in the pavilion and have your groom’s dinner right there. Wood-fire pizzas can be made, or you can DIY grill burgers or steaks for the wedding party, offering a nice laidback evening before the big day. There’s no doubt Pine Peaks offers a few extras that other places can’t. Peterson has two tractors that can be used for some fun photos and then to take a celebratory hayride. “We’ve had over 275 weddings and no two have been the same,” he says. Nearly 50 weddings are already booked for 2019. We are now booking into 2020 and 2021. Wedding cancellation insurance is provided and paid for by Pine Peaks. Call 612 986-6800 for more information and to set up a tour. Pine Peaks Wedding and Event Center, with a capacity of around 300, has been the recipient of awards from The Knot and Wedding Wire as well as Best Wedding Venue in 2015 from Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine.

Many brides-to-be plan traditional weddings, but when it comes to the engagement and wedding rings, they should be as unique and special as the couple wearing them. At Menk Jewelers, we can create the perfect, one-of-a-kind rings that match your dreams and personality. Welcome to E.L. Menk Jewelry where originality, superb quality and excellent service are hallmarks.
Ed began his career as a watchmaker. He was honored with the Harold Donkersgoed Award for achieving the highest score on the Minnesota Licensing exam during his apprenticeship at Morgan’s Jewelry in Winona, MN. Ed and his wife Susan settled in Brainerd where he first was a watchmaker for Bud’s Jewelry before purchasing his own store. Watchmakers Jewelry was renamed E.L. Menk Jewelers due to the changing technology of watchmaking. Whereas watchmaking may have fallen out of fashion, Ed and Susan built a robust jewelry business spanning more than thirty years. The ability to design and create original pieces uniquely suited to the individual is one of the traits that made E.L. Menk a regional leader in jewelry. Here, not only will you find a wide selection of beautiful gemstones and settings, you will also have a virtually unlimited choice of designs. Your wedding rings can be singularly created for you, your taste, and your personality. Young couples are often on tight budgets and the prospect of purchasing a diamond ring may be questionable. But, before you totally throw out the idea, make a visit to E.L. Menk Jewelers. There are so many options available; you are sure to find the one that

suits your style and your budget. The diamond still stands as a symbol of eternal love. Brilliant, sparkling and durable, as it captures light and reflects it back in a rainbow of colors, the diamond symbolizes the purity and grace of a truly meaningful relationship. Traditionally it also is the symbol of prosperity. Diamonds were once only available to royalty. Not until the diamond fields of South Africa were discovered did they become accessible to others, and even then only the wealthiest of citizens could afford them. Today, not only are diamonds found around the globe, they can also be created in the lab. This is great news for those who are concerned about the ethics of mined diamonds. Diamonds obtained from the earth vary greatly in their purity. In fact, only two percent of mined diamonds have exceptional purity. Those created in the lab have, at the very least, the purity of that two percent. The environment in which these diamonds are created is controlled. High temperature along with high pressure is one method used to create these pristine stones. The diamonds produced often have a yellow tint. Another method uses Chemical Vapor

Deposition. These gems are whiter and sometimes have a pink tint. Both methods yield stones that are structurally and chemically identical to those which are mined from the ground. Technology can produce a perfect diamond in about three months. However, mined diamonds also have their unique qualities making them sought after. The diamond mines around the world produce a wide range of colors. Each area seems to yield a dominate tint. South African Cape diamonds and Canary diamonds have warm yellow tones which vary from slight to prominent. Down under, Australian diamonds have the coveted brown tint. These diamonds have been given nicknames like Chocolate, Cognac, and Champagne to describe their coloring. Icy white diamonds are mined from the fields in Canada’s Northwest Territories. These diamonds are also laser inscribed with identification that discloses the mine where the stone originated. Documents also identify the cutter. The wedding ring of your dreams is waiting for you. URPRISE!
BY KELLI ENGSTROM
Cami Kopetka had no idea Garrett Gregerson was planning a proposal. On a seemingly normal Sunday afternoon, Cami and her parents, Dave and Peg, met photographer Kelli Engstrom on the dock to have some family photos taken— or so she thought. Garret’s parents, Tammy and Tim, drove all the way from Tekamah, Neb., with his sister, Katheryn, from Manhattan, Kan., for the big surprise. Needless to say Cami was stunned and overjoyed!

SURPRISE!
“Maddy’s family has been going up to Nisswa every year since before she was born, so I knew that was a special place for her. I had the ring customized and asked her dad for his blessing the night before we left for the trip. I chose to propose at the Grand View Lodge because the year before Maddy showed me the resort and I was blown away with how beautiful it was. I planned on proposing on Sunday but that didn’t work out. I am so glad our photographer, Kelley, was so flexible. Since the plans changed, I told Maddy that we should go back for a walk. I had

Kelley wait for us at the bottom of the stairs. We came down the gorgeous staircase, Kelley came up to us and asked to take our picture for a promo for the resort. She took one picture, then I got down on one knee and asked Maddy to spend forever with me. It was the perfect moment and I am so grateful that Kelley could capture it for us. Maddy was blown away and so surprised when I told her how this all came about. We couldn’t be happier with how the photos turned out and we are forever thankful for Kelley.

GRAND VIEW BY SHEILA HELMBERGER
Where to have your wedding will be one of the first decisions you make for your special day. Whether you’ve always dreamed of an outdoor ceremony lakeside or something more intimate with close friends and family, the wedding planning staff at Grand View can make it happen.
White chapel at Grand View Lodge. Photo by Kelley Jo Imaging. A Grand View wedding can mean arriving on the property before the big day and not leaving until after the honeymoon. From the groom’s dinner to accommodations for you and your guests, the ceremony itself, and the reception, everything can be done within walking distance. “This is a true leisure wedding experience,” says Frank Soukup, Director of Marketing for Cote Family Destinations. A resort wedding can include doing other activities with friends and family. The famous golf courses are complemented with a worldclass spa on the property. The new NorthPark Recreation Center includes an indoor/outdoor pool, yoga studio and workout area. The resort now features a new chapel that seats 80 for a more intimate setting for smaller weddings and vow renewals. “The chapel has really been well received,” says Grand View Wedding Sales Manager and planner Becky Bohnenstingl. “It’s nice to have a smaller space that is perfect for an intimate ceremony.” The chapel features a large refurbished, colorful stained-glass window in the peak of the chapel with a high vaulted ceiling with thick, reclaimed wooden beams throughout that accentuate the rustic and inviting atmosphere. “A lot of people think Grand View is a perfect place for a destination wedding, but Grand View is also the perfect place for local couples
looking for a special reception or wedding venue,” says Soukup. Summer and fall are the most popular time for weddings, but there are some very good reasons to consider an off-season ceremony, too. It means increased availability of reception space at a discounted cost. “It offers couples a chance to splurge on other things,” says Bohnenstingl. An initial meeting or Site Tour at the resort will help determine what a couple is envisioning for their wedding and talk about the budget, says Bohnenstingl. With five venues to choose from at Grand View, they’ll determine which site works the best. Twice a year the resort offers a complimentary Grand View Wedding Fair for their booked clients that showcases preferred vendors and a chance for couples to sample menu options and speak with the chef and members of the culinary staff. Couples can determine how relaxed or formal they’d like the reception by choosing from hors d’oeuvres stations, wine, and beer tastings, to a plated meal. Their Preferred Vendors truly enhance the Wedding Fair experience: The tables are decorated by florists, photographers showcase their unique wedding photo shots onsite, hair and makeup vendors are showcasing the latest and greatest and live musicians/ DJs
are playing in the background. “It’s exciting because you get a feel for what your wedding could be like and the wedding team can finalize the menu. We get them into the planning mode, help them finish everything on their list, and they can see it all first hand,” says Soukup. The resort is booking weddings into 2020 but often hosts more than one event on the same day during certain times of the year, so it is never too early, or too late, to inquire about a date for your wedding. “Obviously,” says Soukup, “If you want your pick of dates, time and space and you have a large guest list—you should pre-plan out a little bit further.” This year, they will finish with their $55million expansion of 41 two- to six-bedroom units, and a 60-room boutique hotel means Grand View will continue to be one of the top locations in the state for both vacationers and wedding couples alike. “The hotel has a trendy up-north vibe,” describes Soukup. “It has a real classy feel, and the top-level rooms have a spectacular look-out balconies.” The hotel aptly-named North, will also feature three meeting rooms and a 100-person event space and might be the perfect fit for that destination wedding you have always dreamed about.

REEZY POINT A Little Bit of Everything
BY SARAH NELSON-KATZENBERGER
When it comes to making major decisions about your wedding day, Breezy Point Resort offers all the options without any of the headache. “We really are a onestop shop from start to finish,” said director of Marketing and Group Services Bonnie Stroinski. “We help you make the big decisions and you leave all the details up to us.” Breezy Point Resort is located 20 miles north of Brainerd on beautiful Pelican Lake. The resort is home to three world-class golf courses as well as a number of restaurants, endless entertainment, indoor and outdoor wedding venue options and plenty of space for an entire wedding’s worth of guests to stay for the weekend. With so much to do, Breezy Point makes your special day feel more like an extended vacation with your dearest family and friends. “Really the possibilities are endless,” said Breezy Point general manager Dave Gravdahl. Summer lodging options offers something for everyone — suites, hotel rooms, condominiums, and retreat homes with lodging for as many as 32 guests. Plus, weddings hosted at Breezy Point come complete with a complimentary suite reserved for the happy couple for the duration of wedding weekend. “It’s really nice to be able to have the entire wedding’s friends and families all stay in one location,” Gravdahl said. “It takes the excitement of the big day and spreads it over an entire weekend.” Whether you’re looking for an intimate barefoot beach wedding or the matrimonious event of the decade, Breezy Point Resort has something to far exceed your expectations. “We are like the destination wedding location of the north,” said Stroinski. “You can have your beach wedding without breaking the bank.”
Stroinski said the gem of Breezy Point is the point itself where couples have their wedding ceremony surrounded by the crystal-blue water of Pelican Lake on all sides. It makes wedding parties forget they aren’t actually on a tropical island. “Who needs to go to Jamaica, Stroinski said. “It truly is breathtaking.” The rustic Antler’s Pavilion makes a beautiful backdrop for outdoor ceremonies. The resort can accommodate a small event of as few as 20 guests, a full-fledged social affair up to 400 guests. “Whether you’re looking for an indoor formal event or an outdoor lakeside affair, we’ve got you covered,” Stroinski said. After the ceremony, bridal parties have the option to take a relaxing cruise around the lake with their wedding party. They can take a ride on one of Breezy Point’s 15 available pontoon boats or the pride of Breezy Point — the Breezy Belle Paddleboat — is available for a post-ceremony breather before couples and their guests dance the night away. The Breezy Belle is also an excellent option for a unique groom’s dinner setting or even room for an entire wedding up to 100 people. There’s no shortage of things to do at Breezy Point. The resort has two indoor recreation areas, an onsite resort spa, live entertainment, lake access, not to mention plenty of golfing. For guests looking to venture away from the resort, Breezy Point is conveniently located near popular area shopping destinations in
Nisswa and Pequot Lakes. Whether guests are avid golfers or would rather see the sights, the activities at Breezy Point make sure wedding guests are having the time of their life while the wedding party prepares for the main event.
“We are like the destination wedding location of the north,” said Stroinski. “You can have your beach wedding without breaking the bank.” “Guests are never without something exciting to do during their stay,” said Stroinski. “It’s a great getaway from the day-to-day to celebrate and squeeze in a little relaxation while they are here.” While summer is prime-time wedding season at Breezy Point, Stroinski said Breezy Point Resort hosts weddings year round offering a magical getaway in the great northwoods. A LAKES PROUD WEDDING BY SARAH NELSON KATZENBERGER
Katelin and mother, Deb Cranny 18 Weddings North | 2019
When Katelin and Zach Hohertz got engaged in the summer of 2017, they knew exactly where they wanted to celebrate their wedding vows — in Katelin’s parents’ Merrifield backyard. “Our goal was to throw a celebration where everyone had the best time and have everyone we love surrounding us,” Katelin said. “It just made sense.”
When Katelin and Zach approached her parents, Michael and Deb Cranny with the idea, they were pleasantly surprised. Katelin’s older sister, Keli Brooks, was married at the Cranny home in 2006. “Katelin always said she didn’t want to repeat what her older sister did,” Deb laughed. “But then she changed her mind — and of course, we couldn’t say no.”
What started out as a nod to her hometown quickly turned into a truly “Lakes Proud” focused wedding event with local vendors used for nearly every aspect of the wedding. “We even had a (Lakes Proud) sign in our yard,” Deb said. For Michael and Deb, the request led to a year of fun and excitement as they figured out how to host 250 wedding guests right in their backyard. “There were quite a few times we asked ourselves, ‘are we crazy’,” Deb recalled. “But we did it — and people had a great time. That was the most important thing.” Katelin said her ties to the Brainerd lakes area and love for the lake were a big part of the draw to having their wedding on the lake at home. “It was and continues to be the place where we get to spend time with family doing our favorite thing,” she said. Katelin, a mental health provider, met Zach when he was working maintenance at the hospital where Katelin is employed. “I was living in a house with four girls at the time and I convinced him to come over and fix a long list of things we didn’t know how to do,” Katelin said. “We started spending more and more time together after that.” After four years of dating, Zach proposed to Katelin over Fourth of July weekend in 2017 on Katelin’s family pontoon with the whole family present. “It was really perfect,” Katelin said. Katelin and Zach both come from closely knit families and were excited to bring their whole group of loved ones together for their big day. Getting married at home sounds like a dream but Katelin and Deb both agreed — it’s a lot of work. “There are lots of things

that you have to figure out that I didn’t even think about going into planning,” Katelin said. The tiny details like silverware, flatware, clean-up, hiring a bartender made for a long list of to-dos on top of the normal wedding checklist. “I had amazing help from my mom, sister, my aunt and my mom’s friends that made the day possible,” Katelin said. “The best advice I could give to anyone else would be to have good help!” The couple rented a large tent for the reception and the Crannys asked a neighbor for a field to borrow for parking. The ceremony itself was held right on the shore of
Lake Edward. “We had it right on the water,” Deb explained. “It was perfect.” Being a Brainerd native and a daughter of local small business owners (Michael and Deb own Home Instead in Brainerd), it was important to Katelin to used local vendors for everything possible — even if it meant getting creative. “Katelin’s ideas were wonderful, simple and always focused on her guests having a great day,” Deb said.” I was able to assist with resources from our ‘small town’ Brainerd lakes area.” Being well connected in a small community was truly comforting for Deb as she helped Katelin plan. “To be able
to have people helping us that we already knew because they were business people right here in our community — it just made things go so smoothly,” she said. What started out as a nod to her hometown quickly turned into a truly Lakes Proud-focused wedding event with local vendors used for nearly every aspect of the wedding. “We even had a (Lakes Proud) sign in our yard,” Deb said. massive spread of condiments complete with a special “Bride’s” and “Groom’s” burgers and tables covered in French fries. Instead of a traditional wedding cake, Katelin and Zack opted for donuts from the Senior Center in Brainerd displayed on a pegboard for guests to munch on after dinner. The District Band, a group made up of Lakes area educators, provided live music for the evening. “They are the best,” Deb gushed. “I have loved them forever.” Knowing that parking cars for 250 guests was going to be tricky, Katelin had to get creative in coming up with a good plan of action. A former Kixter, Katelin reached out to the group for help. Current Kixters not only
handled the parking valet but also managed the kids’ table. The guest list included 50 children under the age of 12 who all sat at a beached dock-turned-table for the wedding reception. “We had games and goodie bags and art projects to keep the kids busy while their parents enjoyed the day,” Deb said. “And lots of sugar. We gave them a lot of sugar.” With a large part of their guest list traveling from Minnetonka and out of state, the Crannys reached out to local resorts and hotels to secure rooms. “Most people came up a few days before and made a weekend vacation of it,” Deb said. They booked out Cozy Bay Resort for the groom’s family and friends and the groomsmen got dressed at the resort before being
ferried to the ceremony site on one of the resort’s pontoons. “It was really pretty cool,” Deb said. “Just so fitting.” For both Katelin and Zach and their families, the best part of the day was just seeing how much fun their friends and families had celebrating their marriage and enjoying the lakes area in its prime. “We got to show everyone we love the place we love the most,” Katelin said. “Being on the lake, people understood why we love the Brainerd lakes area so much.”

They’ll smoke it themselves or have a friend do it for them. “People like pulled pork because they can make it two to three days ahead of time and heat it up in warmers,” Kunde explains. Kunde recommends planning a 1/3-pound serving of meat per person, or two pulled pork sandwiches per person. If you’re expecting 30 guests, you’ll need about 20 pounds of pork. Kunde recommends ordering your meat at least a week in advance. Cub Foods’ bakery staff not only can make personalized wedding cakes or cupcakes, but they’ll bake fresh hamburger buns for your pulled pork sandwiches that day.
Some couples chose prime rib, beef brisket or even brats and hamburgers. The deli also can create fried or grilled chicken dinners, taco bars and ham and turkey roll-ups for weddings and even for the wedding party as they get ready before the big event. Food can be picked up hot and ready to serve at either store. Flowers for floral arrangements can be ordered from around the world right at the store. No matter your budget or personal style, Cub Foods has something for everyone. “There are no two weddings that are the same,” says Bryan Jelinski, Brainerd Cub store director. “We can offer whatever they are looking for.”

Wedding photography is not DIY You are getting married. You’re planning a wedding. So many things to think about. So many expenses on your list - the venue, flowers, dress, suits, food, decor. Though some wedding items can be DIY, wedding photography isn’t one of them. Your wedding photography shouldn’t be something you try to tackle on your own. It can be very difficult especially for an amateur to organize a wedding party for photos. The money you may save in hiring a novice or family friend with a great camera or iPhone may cost you an overwhelming amount of disappointment come picture delivery day. Okay, so you know you’ll need a photographer. What do you look for? Checking a photographer’s portfolio is a must. You’ll want to look for variety and style. WINTER WEDDING CELEBRATION AT PINE PEAKS WEDDING AND EVENT CENTER
There’s a view of serene beauty from every deck and porch. It’s a photographer’s dream of rolling hills, fields and pines. For your wedding ceremony there are a variety of local churches to choose from. You can also opt to use the beautiful heated, draped pavilion at Pine Peaks all set up with ceremony chairs for your guests.
46 Weddings North | 2019
Photo by Tim Larsen Photography The seasons in lake country can change quickly, sometimes overnight. Raising or lowering tent walls and utilizing heaters or fans, you can create your ideal temperature and make the atmosphere as cozy or as open as you’d like.
“We’ve had over 275 weddings and no two have been the same,” he says. Nearly 50 weddings are already booked for 2019. We are now booking into 2020 and 2021. Wedding cancellation insurance is provided and paid for by Pine Peaks. Winter Wedding Discounts Winter Wedding packages are discounted by up to 50% from our peak Spring/Summer/Fall season. Call 612 986-6800 for more information and to set up a tour.
