SUMMER BOAT A favorite of visitors and locals alike is cruising the lakes on board a boat. Whatever your speed, getting to and from in the Lakes region is more fun on the water. Bring your own speedboat, rent a pontoon, or take a cruise on one of our big lakes. Pack a snack or dock at a resort or restaurant to grab a bite. Many of our lakes allow you to beach your boat along the shoreline for a quick game of frisbee in the water, or to anchor and chat with adjacent boaters. It’s a community on the
water! Pelican Lake, Gull Lake, and the Whitefish Chain have great opportunities for shallow water fun. This is lake life at its best!
FISH! With so many options for waters to fish from and species to catch, you could be angling in the Lakes Country every single day of the year. Seriously! Popular species include Bass, Sunfish, Muskellunge, Crappies, Northern Pike, and Walleye. With so many variables including time of year, bait preferences, weather fluctuations, water condition, and state and local regulations, we recommend that you consult the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website or ask a local guide for advice. (See Walleye Dan’s article on page 29 to get a glimpse of the area’s angling talent.)
And whether you’re dangling corn off the dock or casting out a shiny new lure there’s nothing like a late-night fish fry under the stars. Or visit a local restaurant or resort to sample their fish delicacies. What a catch!
SKI, TUBE, BOARD Some activities stand the test of time, and waterskiing is one of them. Here’s a tip: early mornings and evenings tend to have the calmest waters. Find a pristine bay and carve to your heart’s content. Many resorts offer lessons. Tubing is an all-time favorite of kids and adults everywhere. Hop on a giant inflatable and have a speedy thrill

ride, or a leisurely float. Either way, there’s no skill needed and you’re still on the water getting some sunny vitamin D. Wakeboarding is a combination of waterskiing, snowboarding, and surfing—all while being towed behind a boat. Going pretty fast. Are you up for it? Rent a board, load up the boat, and crank up the music. Or slow it all down with a SUP—Stand Up Paddleboarding is the new kid on the block of watersports. It gives
traverse waters that may not be accessible by a motorboat.
And don’t worry if you fall off your board, tube, or skis. You’re in the water so soak it up!
Looking for a little solitude in your canoe or kayak? Then the crystalclear lakes in the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area are definitely calling your name.
CANOE OR KAYAK
SWIM
Floating atop the water in a canoe or kayak is one of the best ways to experience our area’s best natural resource. Paddling the meandering Mississippi River is easy because of plentiful access points.
How do you swim? In a pool? Off the dock? Wading ankle deep with sand between your toes? Cannonballing off the boat in the middle of the lake? Or feeling the gentle tug of river current? Swimming is a must-do in Lake Country. Our resorts, hotels, rivers, and hundreds of lakes all shout for you to come and dip your toes. Public beaches are free and plentiful—look for them on our area map on pages 24 and 25.
Ready to reel in that elusive fish? Kayak fishing is becoming one of the fastest-growing water sports. Outfitted with special rigging and wider bases, these speciallydesigned kayaks allow anglers to

WINTER SKATE, SKI, KITE There’s a reason that our area is known for producing some fantastic hockey talent. With our fair share of pond hockey and indoor tournaments, organized teams, and gifted coaches, we have an opportunity for every age and ability. Or maybe figure skating or broom ball is your style? Simply clear off some lakeside ice and turn on the flood lights—it’s the perfect combination for making memories. Cross-country skiing is a lot like snowmobiling in the respect that most people think of it as a land-only sport. Not so! What better way to get a heartpumping cardio workout than blazing across a sheet of pristine white snow, covering a perfectly flat frozen lake. It’s a great way to teach the kids, too. Stop at an area resort along your trek for a hot drink and to warm your toes.
8
Wakeboarding is to summer as kiteboarding is to winter. Pick a snowcovered lake and get some air. Even light winds can give you a fantastic ride, and snowkiting is typically easier to learn since you’re not fighting waves and water. Mille Lacs Lake is a popular spot for this growing sport.
FRESH FLAVORS AND A
WARM WELCOME
SNOWMOBILE Cruising along the hundreds of miles of our area’s groomed trails, with evergreens making a living tunnel, is definitely exhilarating. But wait— there’s more! In the Lakes region we have adrenaline pumping racing action. Radar runs—high-speed snowmobile races on the ice-covered lakes—occur throughout the area, including Ice Fest at Breezy Point. Want more fun, less competition, in your radar run? Head to Crosslake for WinterFest, held every year in February.

Try scuba diving in the Cuyuna mining lakes, parasailing across Gull Lake, golfing on ice during the Frozen Fore, walking the state’s longest pier (600 feet!) in Staples, admiring the annual fish house parade in Aitkin, paddling the 16-miles of Mississippi River that abuts the Camp Ripley Training Center, or racing a rubber duck in Pine River. Heck, just last year a group of locals took a a 17.5 mile trip across Mille Lacs Lake . . . on bikes . . . in the middle of winter! A long day of recreating and relaxing can be pretty demanding. Good thing there are four breweries in the area to help you unwind. Join us as we give you a virtual sampling . . .
JACK PINE BREWERY JackPineBrewery.com | College Road, Baxter When a Kickstarter campaign helped to open its doors in 2013, Jack Pine became the first brewery in the Lakes Country. Featuring a steady arsenal of beers that will wow your palate, Jack Pine brews are a must-taste. Ready for a zinger? Try Vengeance, their jalapeno-infused cream ale. Or a pint of their popular Fenceline Pale Ale or Duck Pond Brown Ale are always satisfying. One of our favorite seasonals is the Campfire Stout, with marshmallow aroma, hints of milk

chocolate, and a roasty graham cracker finish. If you’re lucky, it’ll be on tap again soon. “Just as the scraggly jack pine tree is a pioneer in an area ravaged by a forest fire, the individuals (Kickstarter backers) that helped bring Jack Pine Brewery to fruition are pioneers in a craft beer wasteland. To this, we give a nod of respect and raise a pint to those worthy of praise.” – Patrick Sundberg, Owner/Founder/Brewer
GULL DAM BREWING GullDamBrewing.com | Smiley Road, Nisswa Mark and Barb Anderson knew they had a good thing going when a blind taste test revealed them winners. “Gull Dam Brewing is proud to call the Brainerd Lake Area home and to be a part of the premier tourism setting, economy, and people in Minnesota.” – Mark Anderson, Owner/President
ROUNDHOUSE BREWERY RoundhouseBrew.com | Northern Pacific Road, Brainerd The new kid on the block, Roundhouse, is ready for business. Distinctively located in one of the historic Northern Pacific Railroad buildings, the brewery ROUNDHOUSE BREWERY just opened this spring. As their namesake suggests and their website describes “a roundhouse was used in old rail yards as a place for trains to enter onto a turntable. Yes, like your parent’s old record players.” Read their blog and you’ll get a witty combination of history and humor. Visit their taproom and we’re sure you’ll get that same satisfaction from their carefully crafted beers.
“We aim to brew superior beer in an historic setting for the Brainerd Lakes area. We believe deeply in this community and want our business to allow guests to connect with our brewing methods, the history of this railroad town and each other.” —Roundhouse Brewery’s Mission
BIG AXE BREWING BigAxeBrewing.com | Main Street, Nisswa Tucked into Nisswa’s well-known shopping strip, Big Axe offers small batch craft brews. Sample their popular offerings like the chocolate oatmeal stout or try a seasonal favorite like the rye pale ale. They also offer fresh-brewed root beer and a unique menu with delicious munchies. Tator tot hotdish with smoked prime rib and cremini mushrooms? Yes, please! “People around here take pride in the area and really support each other and the community. It makes us at Big Axe feel like we’re part of an extended family.” —Chris French, Owner/Brewer

BRAINERD/BAXTER
Two towns with one mission: merging business and pleasure. Old town nostalgia in downtown Brainerd meets new town buzz in lively Baxter. Retail stores take center stage along the stretch of Highway 371 that leads north, alongside hotels that boast waterparks and meeting spaces. Conventions, reunions, and even birthday parties are made more fun at these family-friendly lodging properties. Downtown Brainerd combines history, charm, recreation,
and business. (Show up for their annual 4th of July celebration and you’ll see what we mean!) The mighty Mississippi runs through town with natural spaces to enjoy, while the business side flourishes with professional services, retail shops, award-winning schools, and more.
CROSSLAKE Head a little further north and find a town tucked into green trees, blue lakes, and rivers with outstanding small town hospitality. Crosslake is a short 20 minutes north of Brainerd (see map on next page). Year-round community events like the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, WinterFest, Crosslake Days (with a chili contest!), boat shows, car shows, and live outdoor concerts are hugely popular with visitors, locals, and area businesses alike. This is one hoppin’ little town. Prepare to fall in love. Crosslake.com

PEQUOT LAKES There’s something circling under the bobber! And we’re not talking about a finned friend. The town of Pequot Lakes, with its bobber water tower— one of America’s most iconic!—is moving and shaking with activities and fun retail shops. A scenic drive up Highway 371 from Brainerd you’ll find this bustling town on the Paul Bunyan Trail. Stop by our office (right ON the PB Trail) to chat about Stars and Stripes Days, Market in the Park or Bean Hole Days. We bury pots of beans in a hole. Seriously. And seriously good! Pequotlakes.com

Cuyuna: For the Love of Biking BY RON PLINSKE, CUYUNA LAKES MOUNTAIN BIKE CREW The secret is out—the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area (CCSRA) is the place for your next outdoor adventure. What amazes me is that CCSRA’s red dirt mountain bike trails, from beginner to expert level, attract riders from throughout the United States and beyond. Plus, visitors can lodge in a wide range of accommodations. Ever slept lakeside in a yurt? The CCSRA has them available for rent year-round. Or if a yurt isn’t quite your style, our area’s lodging establishments offer something for every budget. From lakeside camping to full service resorts, there’s a relaxing stay within a short drive (or ride) of Cuyuna’s myriad maze of trails. When many think of Cuyuna, “Shredding the Red” on the 28 miles of trails is the first thing that comes to mind. I think that Cuyuna is way more than that! If riding the red dirt is not your passion, grab the kids and head out on the paved 8-mile Cuyuna Lakes State Trail that runs from Crosby through the picturesque mine lakes area and out to Riverton. While in Crosby, don’t miss an enlightening tour of the Croft Mine Historical Park. Through pictures and print you’ll meet the hard working Cuyuna Range Miners and gain a new perspective on the hills you shredded just hours earlier. Oh and by the way… you don’t need a bicycle to enjoy the Cuyuna area. Launch your canoe, kayak, or standup paddle board on one of the crystal clear mine lakes. You may even see one of the Department of Natural Resource’s stocked rainbow trout as you paddle past a family of loons. Cuyuna… visit once and you may just come back to stay. Seriously, it happened to me!

E STUDIOS | ADVENTUR JOHN LINN
After too many sad-faced trips back to the Twin Cities on Sunday afternoons, Ron and LeAnn Plinske sold everything and headed to Cuyuna in 2013. Are they pioneers? No way. The Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area groundwork was started decades ago. Those CCSRA pioneers had the vision of a Cuyuna outdoor adventure nirvana. The beauty of this place, the energetic outdoor lifestyle, and the quality of the people will continue to bring adventurers . . . and like Ron and LeAnn, some might just stay for good!

Fishing For Tall Tails BY DAN EIGEN (AKA “WALLEYEDAN”) How can you not think of fishing when you hear someone talk about Brainerd, Minnesota? This Brainerd Lakes Area is loaded with lakes of all sizes, fish of all species, and fishermen, women, and children of all ages. We even have a high school and junior high fishing team here now! I am in my 27th year as a fishing guide here in the Brainerd Area and as I think back over the years, I have so many awesome memories. I have spent the majority of my time on the Gull Lake Chain, and it was here that I fell in love with walleye fishing back in the late 70’s. I’ll never forget the afternoon that my dad, brother, and I were fishing in front of Dutchman’s Bluff when both my dad and I had huge walleyes on at the same time. He landed his and I lost mine at the side of the boat. I was sad because that old Johnson Century reel probably could have used the drag loosened up a little! It’s just one of the many lessons that I’ve learned over the years. Another lesson? You can’t catch them all. But you sure do remember the ones that get away. The other notable one was in the early 90’s when my brother John was up visiting. We were ice fishing and he lost “Jingles” out on the hump in front of the Quarterdeck Resort. She was so huge that we couldn’t get her head turned to get her up the hole. So these days that’s the goal . . . to land Jingles or her offspring. She’s broke so many lines that we’re convinced that she has jigs, hooks, and lures hanging from her jaw. The biggest walleye that I ever caught was on Gull Lake back in 1997 when I was guiding a customer from Marietta, Georgia. The fish was caught in June on a Lindy Rig and a leech on the Hayfield. She weighed 12 pounds 1 ounce and measured 33.5 inches (without a pinched tail). What a catch! As you can tell, I have a passion and love for fishing in the Brainerd Lakes. It’s truly the best place in the state (or even nation?!) to create your own fishing memories. We can even help you weave that tall tale—just hire one of our guides and you might get a crack at Jingles!

Once known only for its fishing, the Brainerd Lakes area has become one of the finest golf destinations in the country. There are very few areas that boast the quality or concentration of golf as Lakes Country. It has become the #1 golf and resort destination in the Midwest. The combination of wildlife, lakes, and woods is ideal for outstanding golf! The golf revolution began in the 1930’s when Madden’s on Gull Lake started promoting the area’s first 18-hole course. In 1991 Grand View Lodge brought championship golf to the Brainerd area. Since then nationally-known designers Arnold Palmer and Robert Trent Jones, as well as local legends Joel Goldstrand and Scott Hofmann, have helped to add five nationally ranked championship courses. Whether you are a year-round resident, spend the summers here, or are only here for the weekend the choices for golf abound. There are over 30 courses in the area. The south end of Gull Lake alone offers 108 holes of golf in a one-mile radius! Stay and play packages, daily golf, golf leagues, great instruction programs, programs for kids, and membership opportunities make the Brainerd Lakes area a paradise for every golfer. With the abundance of golf, wherever you are in the Lakes area there is a great golf experience nearby. Join us!
