LEADER’S MESSAGE To say that 2020 has turned out to be a remarkable year would be an incredible understatement. In spite of significant operating challenges through a global pandemic, the Brampton Board of Trade has managed to focus, as promised to its members, on your business success. As your business association, our team focused on four relevant operational metrics: sustainability, impact, engagement and growth. And, as we complete 2020, the organization has not only performed well, but is in many ways stronger and more valued than ever before. The Board of Trade has demonstrated incredible agility through 2020. It was able to successfully leverage its core programs to digitally deliver meaningful, valuable resources and connections to its members. However, after reporting small surpluses for six consecutive years, the transformation did result in a small deficit for the organization in 2020. Prioritizing investments in member success was the right thing to do and the Board of Directors is confident in reporting that the business has been well-managed and is wellpositioned for success in 2021. The Board of Directors has stayed fully engaged and committed to the membership, and by listening to and anticipating member needs, decisions have been pragmatic, customer-focused and have adhered to strong governance principles. Pivoting to an accelerated focus on on-line delivery and digital programming, such as the development of new Peer-to-Peer Networks, was instrumental in our success in 2020, with membership revenue increasing 12%. The virtual delivery of programs including the annual Business Excellence Awards, Expert Series and our View-From-the-Top Series have also been well-subscribed. Business and economic development impact has been high. The Board’s services and advocacy on talent development, goods movement, transit, investment attraction, de-regulation and taxation, for example, are more relevant than ever. In 2020, we also delivered a Business Confidence Survey that provided the necessary insight to ensure that future advocacy work continues to be properly prioritized and quantified based on the feedback and needs of the local business community. Our goal this year was to be stronger together as a business community and to maintain momentum on the practical initiatives that are most critical to the growth of our Brampton business community. Together we have risen to the challenges of 2020, and navigated another successful year for the Brampton Board of Trade and its members. We look forward to a more predictable, safer, and stable 2021, and we look forward to supporting our members through their own recoveries and to a thriving, prosperous future for Brampton!
