Welcome to the Brampton Board of Trade’s Annual Business Excellence Awards!

Tonight is our yearly opportunity to recognize the outstanding achievements of our local business community. It’s a privilege to know that in addition to numerous familiar faces we’re welcoming many new ones into our inspiring group of innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders.

This past year has been a testament to the resilience and ingenuity that define our city. Despite challenges, Brampton businesses have not only persevered but thrived, pushing the boundaries of excellence and innovation. Tonight, we celebrate those remarkable accomplishments.

Algoma University, President & Vice-Chancellor

The Business Person of the Year is awarded to an individual that has demonstrated business excellence and community leadership, contributing to Brampton in both professional and personal endeavors.

Asima Vezina, PhD, joined the Algoma University leadership team as President and Vice-Chancellor in October 2017, bringing more than 20 years of transformational leadership experience to the role.

Dr. Vezina oversees the development and implementation of the institution’s Strategic Plan while advancing the University’s Special Mission to cultivate cross-cultural learning in a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment.

During Dr. Vezina’s tenure, the University has experienced record enrolment growth, successfully introduced new academic programming, and an expanded research presence. In addition, Algoma University has been recognized as a leader within the post-secondary sector’s response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. Algoma University has significantly expanded its presence in both Northern and Southern Ontario through the development of three full campuses in Brampton, Sault Ste. Marie and Timmins.

Under Dr. Vezina’s leadership, Algoma has been a catalyst for change and revitalization in Brampton’s downtown, with a campus expanding to occupy 7 buildings and over 5,000 students supporting local businesses, transit, and contributing to the vibrancy of our community. The exponential growth of Algoma has also contributed to the Brampton workforce and economy in many ways directly through its staff and students, as well as through promoting the city internationally as a destination for education and opportunity. Dr. Vezina and her team have done this through both Algoma’s investments in Brampton, but also through a spirit of partnership while working with stakeholders as community leaders.

Badar Shamim

Vice President & Portfolio Manager, Generation PMCA

The Chair’s Award annually recognizes an individual that has made significant professional and personal volunteer contributions to the mission of the Brampton Board of Trade.

Badar Shamim has been a member of Brampton Board of Trade since 2006. He is a founder of BBOT’s International Trade and Investment Committee in 2010 and served as Board Chair in 2016. Along the way Badar has been a true ambassador for the Board of Trade, helping to establish ties with the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, Export Development Canada, and numerous business councils, both Canadian and internationally. Badar led the first foreign joint due diligence trip undertaken by BBOT in partnership with City of Brampton’s Economic Development Office to Turkey in March 2014 and has participated in many other international economic discussions on behalf of our community, tirelessly working so promote bilateral trade relations.

In addition to continuing to volunteer his time on the Board of Trade’s International Trade, Policy & Government Relations, and Finance Committees, Badar is a presence at BBOT events. A lifetime member of the Brampton Board of Trade, he can often be found in the middle of every room, seemingly knowing everyone and making introductions and connections among businesses while supporting our community.

A graduate of Brock University and a Portfolio Manager by profession, Badar has worked in the investment industry for over 24 years and also serves as the President of the Rotary Club of Brampton and as a Director on the board of the Canada Turkey Business Council.
