BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR
BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR William E. Johnston,
Founder and President of Bramgate Automotive Inc. The Business Person of the Year designation is awarded to someone that has demonstrated business leadership and excellence in Brampton and has contributed to the city in both professional and personal endeavours. Along with his two sons Brad and Bill Jr., William Johnston Sr. runs Bramgate Automotive Group, comprised of: Bramgate Volkswagen, Bramgate Pre-owned Centre, Audi of Mississauga and Bramgate Collision Centre. William Johnston’s career in the auto industry began in 1953, after joining Ford Motor Company in their Ontario District Sales Office as a trainee in their District Manager training program. This training program included retail marketing, business management and customer relations. In 1959, Johnston then joined Volkswagen Canada Inc. in their Toronto head office’s Retail Sales Division after transferring to their Marketing Department two years later to head a new Pre-Owned Vehicle Sales Division and then acquiring the VW Brampton dealership franchise in March 1967. In 1972, Volkswagen Canada brought the upscale Audi lineup of luxury vehicles to Canada and Bramgate was awarded the Audi franchise for Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon.

BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR
The next five-year period saw both Volkswagen and Audi sales flourish in Brampton and Mississauga, resulting in VW and Audi facility developments in both markets. In 2015, Bramgate Volkswagen moved from their longtime Queen Street East location to the new 410-Mayfield Auto Mall and more than doubled their Sales and Service capacity, with their Queen Street facility now operating as Bramgate Pre-Owned Centre and Collision Centre. In 2017, Bramgate Automotive opened their second Audi dealership, Audi Brampton, adjacent to Bramgate VW in the 410-Mayfield Auto Mall. And this fall, Bramgate Automotive will open a new Audi Mississauga dealership in the recently developed Pearson Auto Mall located at Hwy. 401 and Dixie Road. The expansion of Bramgate Automotive Inc. over the years has only been possible through Bramgate’s community participation in Brampton and the surrounding areas’ charitable programs, and in large part to its excellent employees. In 2018, Bramgate Automotive partnered with the William Osler Health System Foundation in Brampton, and the Trillium Health Partners Foundation in Mississauga to assist in raising the crucial funds required to address the highest priority needs of their community hospitals. To date, Bramgate has raised over $200,000 of their $750,000 commitment for these critically needed programs and services. Upon hearing of the presentation of this award, Mr. Johnston, true to his character, displayed a great deal of humility and wanted to ensure that it was known that the success of a business is the result of a great team and his sons, Bill and Brad, have been with him to grow this business and make an impact on this city. While Mr. Johnston has worked to hand over the reigns to his successors, his legacy will live on for a long time with the families who have been impacted by the business that he cultivated.

AWARD NOMINEES Kaneff Properties Limited - Lionhead Marketplace
Founded by Dr. Ignat Kaneff in 1956, the Kaneff Group employs over 100 full-time employees and hundreds of seasonal employees at locations around Southhwestern Ontario and has been an integral part of the cultural and community fabric of the city of Brampton for decades. The company’s vision for a strong Brampton includes providing job opportunities and encouraging inclusion and multiculturalism, adding essential amenities and services to the community, and promoting local business growth. Over 20 years ago, Kaneff Properties had a vision for an iconic commercial property in the hub of the developing Brampton West area (Mississauga Road and Financial Drive). The project was designed to be a reflection of the diverse and expanding area, its residents and their growing lifestyle and every-day needs. Lionhead Marketplace encompasses almost 200,000 square feet of retail and service-orientated businesses, and it is the cornerstone for over 3,000 new residential homes in its surroundings. Throughout the construction process, they had the opportunity to work with a diverse group of trades from the GTA and local small businesses and further collaborated with the city of Brampton and the Heritage Architect to develop the Fuller Heritage Tower at Lionhead Marketplace with the original bricks from the original 19th century Fuller farmhouse.
Math Thru Music
Established in 2010, Math Thru Music’s mandate is to empower and educate young people by teaching numeracy skills through the art of DJ-ing. While its focus is on numeracy education, Math Thru Music is far more than just another educational program. The tangible impact Math Thru Music has on young people is powerful as it provides effective mentorship to students from grades 4 through 12 in a variety of schools throughout the Peel District School Board. The program empowers students in building self-esteem, teaching business skills, and a positive side effect of learning how to DJ, is the potential to earn a wage. Math Thru Music builds school communities through its March Break and summer programs and helps educators develop culturally responsive practices to support numeracy education. With his passion for entrepreneurship and natural mentorship ability, Math Thru Music’s founder Joseph Khargie has become a trusted mentor for kids and a respected partner for both schools in Peel and several local Brampton businesses.
