Light, Space & I Hanabi is an interactive light installation created from a studio project : Light Space & I that engages both our audio and visual sense. Working with Persistance of Vision (POV), we aim to recreate a sense of wonderment of the fireworks display, the audience can enjoy a myriad of cisual effects based on their audio input. This creates an impression that the fireworks are responding to the audience’s excitement.

Joyous Interaction

The idea behind this project started off with the innocent interaction of speaking into a fan when we were young. My group and I decided to capture this naive experience and turn it into a more mesmerizing interaction. Our rotating LED strips light up and dance around with different patterns, responding to people’s voices as they interact with the installation.

01 | Hanabi

Behind the scenes

Setting up the hardware for the installation was the biggest challenge for this project. My group and I had to figure out ways to rotate the LEDS fast enough to achieve the effect we wanted. We came up with innovative alternatives like fans to make things work.

01 | Hanabi

With a combination of coding, tinkering and design, we were able to create an experience that temporarily transports people into an otherworldy place, where they interact with light and space. Our group made a short video to present this project at the end of the 13 weeks project. Watch it here.

For Object Huttle is an electric kettle designed for a school studio project titled : For Objects. The aim of this project is for individuals to design a household object, giving us a feel for traditional industrial design. Where form meets function, and originality meets desirability.

02 | Huttle

Kettle with a Twist

The top lid of Huttle is designed to be as affordable as a big turning knob. Users open the kettle by giving it a big twist! Providing an opportunity to interact with this household object to be a both an ergonomical and comical task.

02 | Huttle

Subtle yet intriguing Huttle was designed to be unconventional and intriguing, subtly transforming the kitchen table into a dreamscape. By using simple and gemotric cuts to form its overall shape, Huttle feels warm and quirky. Almost like a little hut with a life of its own.

02 | Huttle

By turning the handle upside down, it completes the story of Huttle, the electric kettle with a whimsical twist. Unlike anything seen in the market so far. Huttle is designed to be loved for its appearance and for users who want to break away from conventions and dream a little.

IBM & Healthcare Slice is an App designed for a studio project in collaboration with IBM. Using the IBM design thinking process, groups are tasked to solve problems that are plaguing the healthcare area of Singapore. My team and I designed Slice to better help Singaporeans battle chronic diseases, by tackling the problem from the root up. Our daily diet, the kopitiam food we all love.

03 | Slice

Food, habits & Technology Slice is an app that combines three main features to improve the average Singaporean’s dieting choices. Nutrition, business, and habits. Slice is a payment app used when purchasing food from hawkers. Coupled with the database of all the nutrition facts and recommendations fromt the internet, Slice also nudges users towards certain health goals personalised for them.

Using IBM’s technology of big data, not only can businesses and governments collect the purchasing patterns of users, but also combined with dietary and nutritional advice from all around the world, Slice can then provide adequate, personlised dietary recommendations to every user, benefitting all parties.

Designed with simplicity and effectiveness in mind, Slice is supposed to be visually appealing to seduce people into using it. By using flat graphical elements and light and lively colours, Slice aims to be uplifting and inspire healthiness. The project was presented with a video my team and I made with Premier Pro and After effects. Watch it here.

These are posters that I have designed when i was the Head of Publicity for the Student Union’s club for my faculty (DE club) in NUS. This posters were printed and distributed as flyers, as a way to welcome new students who are curious about what Uni life was like in our faculty.

Brochure for NUS DID Gradshow. Designed with the 2D branding team of my batch. A double fold into a square paper is chosen to accentuate the isometric and boxy logo. This exhibition presents recent works by the Division of Industrial Design (DID) at the National University of Singapore.

ABOUT DID The Division of Industrial Design (DID) was founded in 1999 as Singapore’s first university-level course in Industrial Design. DID offers a highly selective degree course in Industrial Design. We teach a potent combination of design thinking and innovation methods, with a clever mix of artistic, humanistic, technological and business disciplines. Our vision is to make life better through design; to equip students with trans-disciplinary skills and thinking processes required to find unmet needs, to solve complex problems involved in creating viable new products, experiences, interfaces and environments. Our graduates are enabled to take up highly valuable and versatile roles as creative designers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders of change.

GRADUATING PROJECTS In their final year, students self-initiate a thesis project according to their area of interest. This year’s projects span across 4 broad categories.

OTHER PROJECTS Through a showcase of selected student works, this section aims to provide a glimpse of the programme that students go through prior to taking on their graduation projects. FUNDAMENTALS In their first year, students acquire fundamental knowledge, skills and aptitudes through a succession of small-scaled design exercises. DESIGN PLATFORMS Design Platforms is a key component of the course which exposes students to different areas of industrial design through learning from different studio leaders and industry collaborators. In their second year onwards, students select and participate in 2 concurrent design studios every semester from a variety of 7 to 10 different design projects. DESIGN INCUBATION CENTER (DIC) DIC is a design research laboratory which works closely with the faculty and students, keeping DID at the forefront of design.
