D e c o n s t r u ct i o n o f M e m o r y Situated near the Gong足guan shopping area of Tai足pei City, Toad Mountain has retained the rustic and guileless nature of a hill community. It is an archetypical embodiment of Taiwan, where we can see the changes and rich historical layers of Taipei over a period of more than 200 years. Toad Mountain is one of many places where the land is filled with memories and history because of the people, stories, time and other factors. I want to use Toad Mountain as an example to talk about the values of the land.

I decomposed the feature landscape of Toad Mountain into several objects and presented the properties of memory of this land with a map impression.

We always create and re-create the landscape around us. When I stand in front of the ocean, I imagine the place far away on the other side. I tried to combine these rational landscapes with my perceptual imagination so that I could be part of the moment.

The piece of paper tore by my friend and she dropped it down someday. I picked it up then drew this picture.

JiaMing Lake, Taitung, Taiwan and concepts of jewelry design / pen, water colour on paper, 2013

Te a r d r o ps f r o m th e Na t u r e Situated in the Central Mountain Range in eastern Taiwan, Jiaming Lake is Taiwan’s second highest mountain lake. Because the colour of lake is as vivid as a blue gemstone, we called it “Teardrops from Angels”. Jiaming Lake is surrounded by emerald green forest and wildlife, as if it is protected by Nature. This is where my concepts came from; I tried to hold the landscape in the palm of my hand.

21

The ring was made of silver and I sculpted an organic shape to represent the landscape with white kaolin clay because of its pure texture. Chrysocolla (gem silica) is a kind of semiprecious stone that is mainly produced in eastern Taiwan and has a colour similar to Jiaming Lake. The gemstones are protected by layers of clay and the atmosphere of the work is quiet and sacred.

The Ou t s i d e Pa i nt i n g The background was a village for military residents from China before, but it is now full of apartments after the urban renewal construction. This is the classic and unique scenery in Taiwan where I spent most of the time in my early childhood.

24

My first self-portrait, I brought it back to my grandmother’s house where I spent my unforgettable childhood to remind myself that don’t lose my original passion.

25

I took pictures of my paintings outside, instead of only focused on artworks itself, to create a harmonious balance between the paintings and the sceneries. I don’t want to limit myself to paint on cavas or paper, instead, the scenery outside or the cat running could be the part of paintings.

26

The underpainting is an initial layer of paint applied to a ground, which serves as a base for subsequent layers of paint. However, I reversed the process of painting and did it at the final stage to cover up my finished drawings.

28

I am usually inspired by ordinary city scenes, such as crowded streets, mess illegal building expansions, and many alleys in the city. Though these hustle and bustle of the city are seen as bad impressions by the majority, they are the things that I want to discuss about with my artworks. Therefore, I took the city as the background of my paintings.
