Masterworks on the Move: A Traveling Exhibition of American Paintings from Wesleyan College Contents of the exhibit include 35 paintings from the Wesleyan College Helena Ogden Eastman Campbell Collection of American Art. The core of the collection was donated to Wesleyan College during the 1930s through 1950s by distinguished painter and Wesleyan alumna, Helena Eastman Ogden Campbell, and by friends in her New
York and European artistic milieu; the collection remains a testament to her commitment to painting and collecting and her leadership in the New York arts community. As an exhibition, the paintings offer a window into the styles and techniques taught at some of the most prestigious studios of New York City and Europe during the early 1900s: Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the Philadelphia School of Art, the Chase School and the Art Students League in New York, and The Chicago Art Institute. An exhibition of the best work by artists trained by renowned masters of American realism, including painting, drawing and anatomy with William Merritt Chase, French plein air painter Lucien Simon, realism with Robert Henri and Howard Chandler Christy. Even in the highly charged and experimental
atmosphere of the New York art scene, the contents of the collection are a realistic interpretation with an Impressionist influence. Ogden Campbell chose traditional subjects of still lifes and portraiture, and she imbued the content with work by confident, painterly, classically trained artists. Each masterwork in the collection is exemplary. Each contributing artist is accomplished and recognized—this important exhibition is a snapshot of 20th Century American art featuring the best paintings by William Stanley Haseltine, Edward Dufner, Jane Peterson, Chauncey R. Ryder, Gustave Weigand, Sophie Marston Brannen, and other recognized and critically acclaimed American artists.
