few weeks ago, we were looking for Garrison caps to wear, in order to become the Andrews Sisters for a local talent show. We looked everywhere, then went on the Internet. (That’s where we learned what they were called and how to make them out of paper). The idea was sound and the largest paper bags we found were used. It was a good idea but the size turned out a bit small for our heads. Meanwhile, loyal readers of Seniors Today, the O’Rourkes, called in and offered us the real things! The caps were worn by Mr. O. during his war years. We were so pleased when we met and received the caps. We asked them to attend the show. They couldn’t for they were scheduled for a cruise. Hundreds came out to view the incredible array of well-remembered celebrities as the Talent Show performers found their way to the tables onstage. There were 17 acts ready to perform. It didn’t matter that some were from the 40s, some from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s eras. Emcee Judy Guillemette interviewed them as they arrived a few minutes before the fabulous star-studded review began!

You Name It … by Kitty Maiden

The following acts were onstage: Talents miming Carol Burnett, The Sister Act with Whoopi Goldberg, Dean Martin, Doris Day, Gladys Knight, and The Andrews Sisters.

Irv Owing and Paul Pollock performed an original rap tune about Gaitu and the joint was jumpin! Joyce Nki was overwhelmed by this. The next stars appearing were: Patsy Cline, Tiny Tim, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and Liberace. Liberace and Stevie Wonder performed with a rendition of Ebony And Ivory. Liberace walked away leaving Stevie Wonder blindly fumbling with his cane in the air. Liberace returned and pulled him off the stage by his cane. It was hilarious! Kitty Maiden is a staff writer for Seniors Today.

Upcoming Presentations At City Island Library am scheduled to make a presentation at the Volusia County Public Library at City Island to educate the public about important legal issues and other interesting matters. The public is invited to attend. Monday, April 20th at 3 P.M. Scams, Shams, & Flimflams In this talk, we concentrate on how to protect yourself from theft of your money and identity as well as damage to your credit. We learned as children that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. We also have heard that nothing is free. There's always a catch. There's always something expected by the party giving something free, even if it's only a hope for future or additional business. The risks of attack to your credit, as well as outright theft of your money and property, have increased exponentially in recent years. You may be contacted by imposters posing as banks, lenders, buyers and sellers of real estate, credit card companies, credit agencies, brokers, lotteries and many others. As we age, we must be aware of additional dangers, including dishonest care-takers and the oddly attractive desire to gamble,

with lotteries, sweepstakes, and similar voluntary acts. I see people every day who have been taken for their money or have spent their money. Often they have lost their entire life savings. Many times they know and realize that it is too good to be true, but they fall for it anyway. Many get taken more than once, because once a scammer realizes the person is easy prey, they keep returning for more. It often seems surprising, but I can assure you that it happens all the time. We will discuss how to address phone calls, door-to-door contacts, and other attacks. We will also discuss the additional challenges in protecting yourself as you become more vulnerable with advanced age. Attorney Michael A. May I Help You? by George Goldtrap ervice Station... It’s a beautiful sound... a valuable concept, but how long has it been since you’ve had any real service? If you shop at a cookie cutter chain store you can forget it. You will save a nickel on the stuff you buy, but you will sacrifice a prized, shared experience... the privilege of service by a proud professional. My experiences of late are just plain amusing. Recently my wife was window shopping at a ladies shop. There, on the glass door, was this message... ‘This shop is owned by ‘Jane Doe’. If you don’t like her, better still if she does not like you, it would be best if you don’t come in. And... I raised my children. I’m not here to babysit yours… and... No Set Hours. We couldn’t believe it. Was it a joke? Evidently not. This shop keeper wanted your business only if you suited her profile. Surprise, the shop is now closed. It gets worse. Just try calling the Post Office or the telephone company. You’ll be lost in the menu maze and they won’t even notice. I recently used the drive in window at my bank... a national chain... and when the clerk failed to carry out one of the transactions, I questioned him. His response... oh... we never pay any attention to that. We just run’em through the cancellation machine. Easy for him to say ... it was my money. Shame on the bank! My favorite happened at a leather shop. I went in to have a belt punched so that I could hitch my britches up tighter. I asked the clerk to please punch a couple holes about a half inch apart. He looked kind of sheepish and stepped aside as a higher authority stepped up to wait on me. (Notice I didn’t say, serve me. Obviously, service was not his thing!) This man, apparently the owner looked at my belt and said, ‘I won’t do that’. Dumbfounded, I asked, ‘Why not?’ He answered, ‘That’s not the proper way to do it.’ ‘First,’ he said, ‘I’d have to remove the buckle, cut about an inch off the end, and then restitch the buckle in place, otherwise you’ll have too much belt sticking out and it won’t look right. ‘It’s not worth that,’ I said… adding, ‘we’re talking about a $3 belt. I just want you to punch two holes in it so I can use it to hold up my pants.’ ‘Can’t do it,’ he says. Pointing to the leather punch laying very obviously on his bench, I asked, ‘Well... would you loan or rent me your punch so I could do it for myself?’ ‘Nope,’ he replied! ‘Let me see now,’ I said. ‘Have I got this right? I’m a potential customer with money in my hand, and you won’t do what I want and you won’t rent me your tool so that I can do it for myself... is the right?’ ‘That’s right,’ he said. Still dis-believing, he stunned me by adding…‘Come back when you want it

S

Happy Talk … by George & Peggy Goldtrap

done right.’ ‘That won’t be a problem,’ I said. ‘I won’t be back.’ I left, the associate tucked his chin. He’d seen this drama played out previously. Now don’t get me wrong. I appreciate craftsmanship. Beautiful leather work is a thing to behold. We are not talking about your Sunday best here. We’re talking a glorified leather string... just to hitch up my britches. Franchises, minimum wage, and labor practices have played havoc with service. There’s not a lot around anymore. I remember a shop where years ago I bought my suits and ties. When I walked in several salesmen would call my name. Good morning Mr. Goldtrap. Come right in. They’d offer a refreshment, chat a moment, and then ask if I wanted to browse awhile or look at something specific. When I’d made my selection they custom fit the outfit. They brought a selection of shirts and ties... all selected with-in my known preferences. I was being serviced and it felt good. When a new shipment of my favorite suit brand arrived, I’d be called before the public got a look. If my schedule prevented my stopping in during regular hours, I’d be invited in at my convenience and a ready salesman would be anxious to meet my needs. They got my business over and over again as long as I lived in that city. I recently found a shop like that in my new town. I’ll go back often. Good service comes from an attitude. Attitudes can be natural or they can be corporate built, but they make all the difference in the world to a company building a reputation. I like the Enterprise Rental Car commercials. ‘We deliver’… and they do. There’s a place for cookie cutter fast food, but does that mean the clerks can’t be courteous? In fact the opposite is true. Visit a Chick-fil-A sometime soon. They chose their young employees carefully and train them to be professional. Good for them. There’s something to be said for craftsmanship, but should that over-ride ‘king customers’ wishes? Reminds me of the time I ordered breakfast from a grouchy waitress. I asked for bacon and eggs and a few kind words. In a few minutes she approached my table and almost threw the plate at me. The food looked fine, but I had to ask... ‘Where are the kind words? Without missing a beat, she said, “Don’t eat the eggs!” George and Peggy Goldtrap are both actors, speakers, and writers and may be reached at georgegoldtrap@gmail.com

What’s In The Stars For The Week Of March 16 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Having second thoughts could be a good thing, even if you're determined to go through with your plans. You might find it worthwhile to take a fresh look. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Financial matters could continue to be a problem until you're able to straighten out some of the more pesky situations. Once that happens, the rest should be easier. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Family matters once again take center stage, and should be dealt with competently and quickly. Insist on others taking on their fair share of the responsibilities. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your creative pursuits seem to be running into a roadblock. Don’t blame others; look within to see if you might be holding back your efforts for some reason. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Keep that keen Cat's Eye focused on relevant aspects of this new situation in your life. Don't be distracted by trivial matters. You need the pertinent facts. VIRGO (August 23 to Sept. 22) As much as you prefer doing things on your own, continue to accept help if you still need to resolve the problem affecting your project. Cheerful news is coming.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) While you might begrudge the added time it will take to get your project from point A to B, you will benefit from the facts that will emerge over this expanded time. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Regarding your workplace suggestions, be prepared to produce the facts to counter reactions from skeptics who feel your approach is unreasonable. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Look for work-related answers on their own rather than rely on unproved assumptions. It might take more time to do so, but the payoff is worth it. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Your aspects continue to favor family issues, with emphasis on changes around your home. Get everyone to suggest what they would like to see done. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) A matter you thought settled might still produce surprises. Continue to gather facts to bolster your position just in case you need to produce them quickly. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) While your instincts are usually right when discerning 'twixt truth and deception, you could benefit from more research on the new idea being pitched.

Antiques Porcelain Doll By Larry Cox

Q: I have a little porcelain doll that was given to me about 30 years ago. I have looked in a number of doll books to try to identify and get the value of it, but have not been able to find anything. Can you help me? —Cyndy, Barre, Vermont A: Identifying dolls can be frustrating, since so many were made and many of the manufacturer's marks are similar. One of the better doll books is the Blue Book: Dolls & Values by Jan Foulke and published by Holly House Books. It is in good condition except that the

temperature gauge is missing. How much is it worth, and where can I sell it? —Marvis, Albuquerque, NM A: Have you contacted antiques dealers in your area? Richard Richardson also might be able to help you, since he is an expert in stoves and related items. His address is Good Time Stove Company, P.O. Box 306, Goshen, MA 01032. It is always good manners to enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope. *** Q: I bought a 6-inch ruler with a black velvet sleeve at a yard sale about 20 years ago. It was made by Tiffany & Company and is sterling. I think it might be part of a set. Any help you can give? —Cliff, Hartford, IL A: Throughout the 1940s and 50s, Tiffany & Company offered desk sets in their catalogs, and I think you are probably correct when you suggest it is part of a set. It is impossible for me to place a value on it. My suggestion is to show it to several dealers for their opinion. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O. Coffee With A Cop ave you had a cup of coffee with a cop yet? If not, let this serve as your personal invitation to join us for some hot coffee and an informal chat about— well, whatever’s on your mind. In at least 30 states across the country, law enforcement agencies are embracing the Coffee With A Cop concept. It’s a program that’s designed to maintain open lines of communication with residents to make sure that law enforcement is in tune with the public safety needs of the community. How better to do that than by citizens chatting with law enforcement officers in a relaxed and informal setting about public safety issues over a hot beverage. For law enforcement, it’s a way to connect with the community, answer questions and hear first-hand from residents about public safety issues and concerns. For the public, it’s an opportunity to meet face-to-face with law enforcement officers and discuss ways to work together to help keep the community safe. The Sheriff’s Office is among several local law enforcement agencies that have adopted the Coffee With A Cop program and brought it here to Volusia County. The Sheriff’s Office

already has hosted eight events—we have hosted two in Deltona, two in DeBary, and one in DeLand, DeLeon Springs, New SmyrnaBeach, and Ormond Beach. So far, attendance at the events has been rewarding. We’ve received plenty of kind remarks and pats on the back and have also heard some thoughts about some public safety concerns that need more law enforcement attention. For those of you who’ve joined us at one of our events, we thank you for your participation. The in person exchanges have been a good investment of time, both for the citizens we serve and our deputies. Coffee With A Cop is a great way to get to know the law enforcement officers who patrol your neighborhood while also strengthening the crime-fighting bond between the community and police. Strange But True Your Vocabulary

MEDICARE WORKSHOP INCLUDING A FREE $10 GIFT CERTIFICATE*

by Samantha Weavers

It was feminist and social activist Gloria Steinem who made the following sage observation: “Logic is in the eye of the logician.”

AT GREEN ACRES• DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA

Some historians claim that Moses had a stutter. If you're like the average American, your vocabulary consists of roughly 45,000 words. Despite the sound of the word, those who suffer from amusia do not have any impairment of their sense of humor; rather, they're tone deaf—medically unable to hear or accurately reproduce relative pitch. Thought For The Day: “These are bagpipes. I understand the inventor of the bagpipes was inspired when he saw a man carrying an indignant, asthmatic pig under his arm. Unfortunately, the man-made sound never equaled the purity of the sound achieved by the pig.” —Alfred Hitchcock

Books Madam Belle Reviewed by Larry Cox ary Jean Wall, turf writer for the Lexington Herald-Leader for more than 35 years, has documented the fascinating true story of vice and power in the Gilded Age South. At the center of her new book Madam Belle: Sex, Money, And Influence In A Southern Brothel is Belle Brezing, a woman who had borrowed money to set up her own brothel, accumulating wealth, power, and fame. By the time Belle was 15 years old, she’d had a baby, had watched her mother die, and been evicted. During the 1880s, there were limited career paths for young women, especially those who lacked a formal education and social connections. While working at Jenny Hill’s bawdy house in Lexington, which was run out of the former home of first lady Mary Todd Lincoln, Belle acquired the skills, manners, and business contacts that allowed her to ascend to power and influence as an internationally known madam. Belle opened her own brothel and leveraged that first house and her early connections with its wealthy patrons

M

to purchase an impressive structure at 59 Megowan Street. The grand opening in 1891 became legendary in Kentucky. Visitors were met with the sounds of an orchestra as they sampled an elegant buffet including imported wines and nice champagne. It was here that fashionable international travelers, horsemen, and civil leaders climbed the five steps to enter what would quickly become one of the most intriguing business destinations in the South. Maryjean Wall began her research of Belle Brezing and her infamous mansion in the 1960s. Since Belle Brezing did not keep a diary and never gave interviews during her lifetime, it was a difficult task, but Wall has achieved the almost impossible. This engaging biography comes as close to revealing the life of Belle as is possible.

Pet Care Guinea Pig’s Death Mystery by Sam Mazzotta

Dear Paw’s Corner: Our guinea pig died suddenly yesterday. She was fine, then she took short and deep breaths, and wouldn't eat or come out of her igloo. A couple hours later we found her passed away, lying on her side. We don't understand what happened. It was Sunday, and we have no small-animal vet in our town. Just curious if you have any idea what may have happened. —Diana, via e-mail Dear Diana: I'm sorry to hear about the death of your pet. Sadly, guinea pigs can fall victim to a number of different illnesses, and can do so shockingly fast. Sometimes, they show few to no outward symptoms. Respiratory illnesses, especially pneumonia, strike guinea pigs hard. Adenovirus, an illness that doesn't always directly cause death, can lead to pneumonia as the guinea pig's immune system weakens. Of course having not seen your pet I can not make a diagnosis but Guinea

pigs also can suffer a stroke or heart attack at any age, often for no apparent reason. When a guinea pig (or hamster, or other pet rodent) begins to show signs of distress—such as weight loss (more than 2 ounces is cause for an immediate vet visit), hiding away in her igloo or refusing to eat —getting help quickly is important, and that means getting your pet to the vet within hours or even minutes to give it the very best chance for recovery. In this case, a veterinarian wasn't available right away. Wheek Care Guinea Pig Rescue lists a few first-aid items to keep on hand here: http://www. wheekcare.org/first-aid.html as well as extensive tips on health signs to watch for. Daily monitoring of your pet is your best bet to combat the threat of sudden death. Do a good check on your pet each day. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com

Ever wondered what all that stuff in the Catholic Church is even all about? Or ever figured it doesn't even matter what you wondered because since you're not Catholic...you can't even go anyway? (Wrong.) Born and raised Catholic... but been away from the Church because you just got “over it” or upset with particular teachings or goings-on within the Church? Or have life changes or realities maybe pulled you away (or kept you away) because of marital status or sexual orientation realities… and you've felt completely rejected and un-welcome?

Well, OUR LADY OF LOURDES is inviting you to a whole new energy and reality of WELCOME in the Catholic Church! And to help us get this message out in a bold new way....we are bringing³ CHURCH" to the streets of Daytona (specifically Main Street) in an attempt to make you feel completely comfy enough to please come give us a try…whether for the first time (ever)…or again for the one hundredth time.

We want you here. We're literally incomplete without you. And we truly hope you'll come out to Main Street on Friday, March 20th to learn about us, unload on us, rekindle your faith with us, light a candle for peace with us, pray with us, or sing contemporary Christian music with us!

Because by chatting with a priest and others you¹ll be able to ask What's Mass all about and how do I even know what's going on or what to say or do? (@ 8PM) and then What's Eucharist, Communion, Reconciliation and Adoration even mean? What's with infant baptism? What are Stations of the Cross? What's the Sign of Peace? What is Catholic Social Teaching (social justice) and how do you even DO that? What's the deal with all those statues and do you guys worship Mary??? (NO) And then we can talk about our amazing Pope! (All this from 9-11PM!) So please join us! Now's your chance ....but it's especially our chance…to chat with you…hang out with you in a casual atmosphere...and especially to WELCOME YOU TO OUR LADY OF LOURDES @ MERCY ON MAIN!

A Program Designed To Slow The Aging Process Special to Seniors Today here is mounting evidence that exercise can help to reduce the risk of certain diseases and conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and arthritis. In fact, numerous studies have shown that diet and exercise can also help ward off cognitive problems and memory loss, while improving sleep and boosting mood and self-confidence. Many believe exercise plays the single most important role in slowing the aging process. In fact, there is even some indication that exercise combined with a balanced (as opposed to trendy) diet can actually work to reverse the aging process, allowing people to remain healthy and active well into their 70s and 80s. Dr. Henry Lodge, one of the leading proponents of this theory, has written extensively on how the body is in a constant state of decay and repair. As the body ages, the chemical responsible for decay works faster than the chemical responsible for regeneration. Exercise reverses that equation and allows the body to repair itself at a faster rate, which Dr. Lodge says can help slow down and even reverse the aging process. Unfortunately, Americans have been getting more and more sedentary over the years while turning to quick fixes to make up for it. To fight this tendency, Chris Crowley, who, along with Dr. Lodge, is the author of

T

the best-selling book Younger Next Year, suggests making exercise a part of your daily routine, something that’s up there with brushing your teeth and combing your hair. If willpower alone isn’t enough to get you there, Crowley holds a Younger Next Year Total Immersion Week at the Aspen Club each year. The program is aimed at busy professionals who don’t have the time to set up a program on their own. It’s the sort of quick fix that’s designed to have long-lasting benefits as the program trains participants on how to incorporate the concepts of Younger Next Year into their everyday lives. “They give you everything you need to be successful at home,” notes Jill Belconis, a Chicago area CEO who attended last year. “Aspen is such a beautiful setting, too,” she notes, “which really fits in with the theme that this is not just about extending your life but enjoying it, too.” To learn more or register, visit www.as penclub.com/younger-next-year

March 13, 2015—Seniors Today Spring Fling—Page B-7 Local Grandma Takes Stage On The Food Network Special to Seniors Today hen it comes to competition cooking, there is one grandma from Ormond Beach who has taken her skills all the way to the pinnacle, the heralded studios of the Food Network in New York City. Sharon Damante, a former long-time resident of Ormond Beach appears in the network’s newest cooking challenge series All-Star Academy, airing Sunday nights at 9 P.M. In the premier episode March 1, Damante competed as one of 10 lucky home cooks selected from among thousands of applicants across the county. Those 10 cooks went into battle, but only eight prevailed, and Damante was one of them. “When I saw the line up of the chefs who might become our mentors, I was bowled over.” Damante recounted. “There in front of me were three Iron Chefs, Bobby Flay, Alex Guarnaschelli, and one of my absolute idols, Michael Symon. Then, when I saw Chef Curtis Stone walk onto the set, I knew right then I was going to do my very best to make his team.” Stone’s L.A. restaurant ‘Maude’ has been called one of the best new restaurants in America and was recently named a James Beard Foundation nominee. The Australian born super chef is a regular on the Rachel Ray Show and is the host of the television series Top Chef Masters. Impressing the chef with the flavors of her Chipotle Pepper-Candied Bacon take on a Vietnamese Bahn Mi sandwich and, her determinative style, Damante was selected by Stone as first pick to join his team. In episode two, Damante continued to shine among the best preparing a quirky remake of Chicken and Waffles, using Buttermilk Soaked & Crispy Fried Squab

Breast with Hazelnut & Orange Zest Waffle Crumbles. Through a series of arduous cooking challenges, contestants on the show try to ignite their culinary creativity and impress a host of well known celebrity judges. In each week of the eight episodes series one cook is eliminated. Damante can’t let on yet how far her talents take her, but she promises there’s a lot of fun ahead to watch unfold. “All of my family, my mom, granddaughter, and so many of my friends and business colleagues from here are rooting for me,” added Damante, who many area residents may remember for her tasty recipes offered at The Gryphon’s Lark pub that she and husband Frank opened in Ormond Beach in 2006. Their pub, like many local family owned businesses was hit hard by the steep recession and the couple chose to close it in 2008. They then moved to Napa, California in 2011and say theirs lives now are filled with adventures—like trying out for the Food Network. “Competing at this level was a life dream of mine and I’m so lucky I was selected.
