President’s Message (Cont’d from page 1)

We continue to hear about the importance of a trained and highly skilled labour force. So the important work of our Workforce Development committee in understanding the needs for our local businesses and communicating those needs to our educational community will continue. They will build on the learning from last year’s conference and recent 12@12 Luncheon to help formulate their plans for the next year. Working with the Mayor and City Council, local MLA’s, MP’s as well as the Board and Administration of the Brandon School Division will be the responsibility of the Government Relations committee. They will continue to work proactively and collaboratively to ensure both improved fiscal responsibilities and efficient delivery of services are achieved. In addition to these activities, we will continue to promote Brandon and our business community through our Ag and Shop Local task forces. As you can tell, there has been and will be many activities completed in the next year thanks to the many volunteers on our committees and in conjunction with a professional and motivated team at the Chamber office. It is a great experience to work on one of these teams and I invite you to get involved and be a part of making Brandon and even better place to live and work. The Chamber is the one organization truly committed to serving the interests of Businesses in Brandon and the surrounding community. I am very excited by this opportunity to work on your behalf and remain open to any feedback or suggestions. Thanks again for your support and encouragement,

Enlightened organizations are realizing that effective safety management demonstrates the true value the organization places on its human capital and that it has a positive effect on the bottom line. An effective Safety Management System is a form of quality assurance where there is clear accountability for safety outcomes. It is a formal documented system where operations are defined by written procedures and standardized practices. An effective Safety Management System is simple, but not necessarily easy. It involves: 1. Setting clear standards, establishing meaningful policies and procedures with the involvement of workers. 2. Training people on the standards in a way that emphasises “what’s in it for me”. 3. Holding people accountable to the
