NewFilmmakers begins its Spring Series with films featuring New York 6:00PM SHORT FILM PROGRAM Penny Whistleton IT STARTS WITH A DRINK (2014, 4 minutes, video) Daniel Feighery HEAVEN (2014, 4 minutes, video) Ali K. Guven 6 MONTHS AND 4 DAYS (2014, 5 minutes, video) Beyza Boyacioglu and Sebastian Diaz TONITA’S (2014, 21 minutes, video) 40-year-old Caribbean Sports Club has witnessed the transformation of South Williamsburg from a Hispanic neighborhood ravaged by gang violence and drugs into one of the hippest and most luxurious places in New York. As the harsh gentrification cleared the neighborhood from poverty and crime, it also washed away the majority of Puerto Rican community, thus the local identity and culture. Today, Caribbean Sports Club is the last social club in the South Side, kept alive by its owner and the community matriarch Maria Tonita. ‘Tonita’s’ is a short documentary that dives into the microcosm of Caribbean Club, in order to talk about urban space, displacement and identity. In addition, it is a love letter to the Nuyorican culture, especially the music and dance. 6:45PM WEBSERIES SHOWCASE J. Hurley R&J (2015, 10 minutes, video) This is the fourth episode of R & J (the web series): JESU, WHAT HASTE. 7:00PM FIRST FEATURE RESENTATION Benjamin Orifici DELIVERY HOUR (2015, 68 minutes, video) Anthony’s Delivery Hour usually runs like clockwork. Not tonight. His wife went into labor 20 minutes ago. His girlfriend is threatening to leave him if he doesn’t meet up. A cocaine buy goes terribly wrong. And if the Nets tank in Game 7, so will Anthony’s dream to move his family out of Red Hook Housing. *Shot in real-time in ‘One Continuous Take’, Delivery Hour is a non-stop adrenaline ride through the streets of South Brooklyn to a Manhattan hospital. 8:30PM SECOND FEATURE PRESENTATION Lawrence Krauser WENDELL AND THE LEMON (2013, 103 minutes, video) Food, found object, talisman, protest song, object of desire, stress ball, confidante, mandala, lover, self-portrait, the universe? ‘What is this lemon to me?’ wonders Wendell. He found it on the street. It is an ordinary lemon. He knows it is ordinary because that’s what he tells people. And if he forgets to tell someone, they remind him: It’s only a lemon, Wendell. It’s just a lemon. Get over it.

Most of the students have experienced tremendous challenges in life. They don’t believe that change for them is really possible. This film follows them as they embark on a semester-long mindfulness training program. The students both help to film the experience and conduct a scientific study – of their classmates! – comparing the effects of mindfulness practice with that of a placebo group. Working as research assistants with scientists from Harvard, Portland State and Hunter College, they pose the question: Will practicing mindful awareness for just three minutes a day help their classmates learn to cope with anxiety and develop resilience? 6:45PM SHORT FILM PROGRAM Eric Hayes DELIVERY (2014, 6 minutes, video) Jennifer Westburgh BUT, I LOVE YOU (2014, 7 minutes, video) Shalom Kolontarov I SAW A DEMON (2014, 8 minutes, video) Sammy James, Jr., THE REHEARSAL (2013, 12 minutes, video) Fernando Toscano NO STRING (2012, 15 minutes, video) 8:00PM FEATURE PRESENTATION

Eva Aridjis CHUY, EL HOMBRE LOBO (2014, 95 minutes, video) Jesus ‘Chuy’ Aceves and a dozen living members of his extended family suffer from the very rare condition of congenital hypertrichosis, meaning they were born with excessive hair on their faces and bodies. Due to their appearance, they suffer from discrimination in all areas of their lives: the children are made fun of at school and abandoned by their ‘non-hairy’ parents, and the adults cannot find work unless they choose to exhibit themselves as freaks in circuses. This moving and visually arresting documentary is a portrait of Chuy and his family members. It examines their day-to-day lives and their struggle to find love, acceptance and employment.
