Bridging the Gap

NewFilmmakers opens it’s 16th Fall season with with one of the most agressive film programs to date. Five days, two theaters, all short films. At first glance this may seem like a small feat, but the truth is rather frightening because somewhere around 150 films will be screened between wednesday and sunday... but wait there’s more! Our regular schedule starts immediately the next day. Get ready for all of your favorite programs and the addition of our new 6:00pm foreign shorts programs. Pictured on the front of our quarterly this month is alumnus Alice Cox who screened her film L to Canarsie with us during last quarters Brooklyn night and sat down for a quick Q&A with our program director to discuss lessons she learned screening with NewFilmmakers Also on the inside you’ll find an interview with alumnus Paige Campbell who works with the innovative non-profit Fractured Atlas to finance her films. -Brandon Ruckdashel Program Director NewFilmmakers NY

As she attempts to guide him in making a smooth transition back into society, Wahid faces the new challenge of life on parole. Dominique, meanwhile, continues to raise questions about the dire impacts of incarceration. with Cameron Granadino VISIONS OF ABOLITION

6 Questions

2) What is your best advice for filmmakers who are screening? Reach out to everyone you know to attend the screening. It feels great to have an audience for something you worked on for so long! Also, think about how to describe your film in 1-2 quick angles to share in the Q&A with the audience after the screening so you feel prepared and ready.

with Alice Cox

3) Was there anything you wish you had taken more advantage of? I would have liked to talk more with the other filmmakers in attendance after the screenings. 4) What are your hopes for distribution of L to Canarsie? I would love to set up some sort of self distribution on line channel with other similarly themed films and I’m also aware of some outlets for on line distribution. However, there are only so many hours in the day, and I prefer concentrating on new projects. So at the moment, no plans unless something just suddenly falls in my lap. Could happen, right? 5) Tell us a little bit about your upcoming feature. The story is about an ensemble group of high school kids in a rural Texas town. The characters are a range of your typical stereotypes in a high school: a metal head, a girl in band who wants to be popular, the daughter of an authoritarian pastor, a cheerleader, the purported kid who worships the devil, etc. As anyone whose attended a high school in middle of nowhere America knows, life during this time of rapid change and adolescent yearning can feel suffocating in a small town. The Plains of Arning takes it to the next level by creating narrative ties to the Bible Belt traditions in the region as well as the landscape. Oh and there is an Angel in the film. Seriously, with wings. I’ll need a budget for CGI graphics!

Alice Cox sat down briefly in DUMBO with NewFilmmakers Program Director Brandon Ruckdashel for a quick follow up to her screening of L to Canarsie last quarter on Brooklyn Night. 1) What did you learn most from screening with NewFilmmakers? After my have a baby hiatus, I felt reconnected to the rich community of filmmakers here in NYC through my screening with NewFilmmakers.

2

6) How do you plan on taking advantage of what you learned for the screening of Poison Berry I will be sure to talk more to the other filmmakers! For more info about my feature, please see the In Progress section of my website: www.rustrainfilms.com

Set in this isolated, as well as environmentally and economically devastated space, the film documents the stark reality of the miners, scientists, and children who live there, and contrasts their often brutal existence with fictional interludes that authored and created with the director. From nonfiction to fiction, the weave of both narratives gradually disintegrates entirely into a fiction, concluding with a series of resolutions centered on the themes of love, dreams and escapism.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Paige Campbell, sat down this last week to speak with Brandon Ruckdashel, NewFilmmaker’s Program Driector, in Queens. She recently screened her film VANITAS with NewFilmmakers New York and is a 2012 graduate of NYU Tisch School of the Arts Film Program. They spoke about her upcoming projects, unique methods of non-profit financing, and her experiences at NYU. Wait, I’m not in Brooklyn? No Dorothy you’re not. This is Queens. What is there to do in the neighborhood for artistic meetups? There’s Bat Haus, it’s a coworking space in Brooklyn off the Jefferson stop, they do a lot of things there. They have film festivals, they do a one minute film festival, they do a Vine festival, and they have Drink N’ Draws with live models. Drink N’ Draw? Are you unfamiliar with the Drink N’ Draw? I would say yes. So Drink N’ Draw is where you have a live nude model and they do a series of poses throughout three hours. Once everybody is inside they close the door and you pretty much get all the beer you want for free while you are drawing.

provides fiscal sponsorship for various artistic and philanthropic endeavors.

Basically what fiscal sponsorships means is that they will sponsor your project so that when people donate to your project, they will be able to write all or some of it off their taxes. So basically you’re donating to Fractured Atlas on behalf of a project, for example Thicker Than Water, and because you are Let’s say you have a series of short term donating to a projects. 501 c 3 you There is a “My father has always been a are able to yearly memmentor artistically. You with a twist. can call and ask them questions, ask them to clarify what is tax deductible. How was your time at NYU? Can I apply to this grant, can I not to this It was actually pretty good, I think that grant? They also have a running page if I hadn’t been at Tisch, I wouldn’t have of grant deadlines coming up. enjoyed my experience so much. Like most kinds of universities the type of education you get at Tisch is really dependent upon the classes you, take the professors you have, and your willingness to figure out how to put your schedule together in a way that most benefits you. I had really excellent teachers, especially camera teachers. The late Geoff Erb, who passed away two years ago, was really incredible. He taught me a lot of things and was very encouraging to me.

That sounds like a load of fun. It’s close and only 10$ Has anything happened with Vanitas since your screening? I’m going to have a couple more screenings to promote my new film, Thicker Than Water. I might have them here or maybe at the bar my boyfriend works at, I’ve considered approaching them and seeing if they would do a screening. Just events to promote Thicker Than Water and to get more people to see Vanitas. I think maybe in the late fall maybe winter, there are going to be a couple more screenings, probably free, just so that people can come and hang out and watch it. People who couldn’t make it to the screening at Anthology Film Archives. Tell me about Fractured Atlas? Fractured Atlas is a non-profit that

Is there a fee? There is a membership fee, you need to become a member in order to apply. I’ve been a member for three years so I can’t remember what it is, but it’s nothing big, $10 a month as an individual I think? So once you are a member you can apply whenever you want as long as you are an active member.

There were a lot of teachers who gave me the room to create the work I wanted to create. Encouraged me and kept me in line. I think that if I hadn’t been as lucky or wise, depending on the circumstances, in my choice of professors I might not have had the same positive experience. Do you apply? Basically they have an application on their website and the deadline is the 30th or the last day of the month. They let you know by the 15th of the following month if you have been accepted and you can do single year or multi-year/ongoing membership.

I felt that there were a lot of people who had our best interests at heart and tried to make sure we were safe and knew what we were doing on shoots. That we were able to make our films, make them safely, get insurance, and knew what our resources were.

really trying to make sure that the students get to learn and make films, I think they are the ones who made it a really good experience. You were in the Undergrad Program right? I was in the Undergrad Program It’s not less intensive, they’re relatively the same right? You do have four years to do what they do in three, but are they really that different? They are similar programs, we have fewer resources than they do. It’s obvious that the undergrad is less respected than the grad program, which makes no sense. A lot of the graduates are coming from backgrounds other than film and they don’t have a lot of the technical skills that they need and they’re not encouraged to reach out to the undergrads to help them meet those technical skills. The undergrads are required to have crew hours, they work while they are in college, and a lot of them go on to work even more after school. The Grad students have a lot more resources available to them including the RED. They got priority for the better camera equipment, however, they didn’t always have the expertise with the equipment that the undergraduates did. If they had fostered better communication between the programs I think that the undergraduates would have had better opportunities to work on shoots with better funding, that got to go places, and had slightly older more mature directors, which can be a real benefit. Do you have any specific mentors who have guided you along the way? My father has always been a mentor artistically. In addition to being a really talented writer, he’s been in the industry longer than I’ve been alive. He’s given me the best writing advice that I’ve ever recieved from anybody. I also have Chris Kelly, a writing professor from NYU, he has such an incredible way of seeing the potential in any project and in any story line. He always knows exactly what any story need, but also doesn’t tell you what it needs. Like a therapist he’s very good at being able to solicit from you the thing that the story needs. Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today. Thank you for having me. You can learn more about Paige on her website at: PaigeCampbellCinema.com

It takes place in a troubled start-up where a young programmer with a troubled past of his own is brought in to finish the company’s product on a tight deadline, in the wake of the murderous rampage and suicide of the previous programmer. The deeper he probes into the code, the more his own behavior changes as the code takes on a life of it’s own. Utilizing surveillance camera, PC cam, videochat and eyeglasscam, for more than half the movie the viewer watches four images at once, but often out-of sync as if someone - perhaps the software program itself - is telling the story.
