PROJECT DESCRIPTION For this Project, I redesigned the packaging for a Bealtes album of my Choice. I chose to redesign the pakcaging for The Magical Mystery Tour Album. My design needed to show strong concpets that effectively communicate what the album is anout as a whole. The End Reslut is a Constructed fullsize vinyl record sleeve that is created using well thought out consideration of each part of the album design and how they represent the work of the Bealtes.
THE BEALTES THE MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR • Released on November 27. 1967 • Followed the release of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. • Album packaging was an an elaborately packaged fold-out album cover, complete with a 24-page booklet featuring costumed Beatles in a variety of ‘far-out’ poses as well as storyboard cartoon comics that tell a story of their ‘mystery’ journey, • The front cover, which showed the group posed in their “I Am The Walrus” costumes below yellow stars spelling out the name “BEATLES,” was cropped and contained with the titles of all the songs above and below. • Capitol also reproduced the 24-page booklet that came with the British release, enlarging it to the size of the album cover. • As with the British release, the back cover contained a multiple image of the group during the staircase “Your Mother Should Know” sequence of the film. • the artwork was colorful and the packaging was much more than the usual 60’s pop album would ever have. • This elaborate packaging stayed in production throughout the years with the exception of the booklet, which was dropped in the late 70’s to cut cost. • Magical Mystery Tour was inspired by ‘The Freewheeling Adventures of Ken Kesey’s Merry Pranksters • Psychedelic • Product of the Beatles Imagination • Colorful • Lots of movement, trying to find ones self and discovering new ways of thinking and seeing. • “We guarantee him the trip of a lifetime” phrases life this that suggest an ironic play on the bands state of mind.
• British flag being Trampled- war reference of views on the countries participation in the war. • Feeling of wondering and lost mindlessness • The Album encompass an atmosphere where everything “Spins out of Control”, referencing to the Beatles trying to grasp (take control) of themselves. • Different viewpoints on the World. • On the Song Fool on the Hill-“ listen to me, don’t be foolish.” • On a Trip (Bus tour) to an unknown location which were common attraction in England at the time. • Ideas of Change • Roundness • State of mind: How the Beatles perceived the world around them. • “Breaking the Form” • Beginning of the end of the Beatles innocence • Younger people understood it • Very trippy • “Sherabang rip”- People who go on a trip from Liverpool to see the Black pool lights, bring crates of beer and got hammered.
• Reoccurring theme of war references and oppression • Dream like state, very spaced and beyond realism • Mystery tour- Have no idea where you are going on these bus tours • Outrageous dress, color schemes, appealing to the counterculture movement of the time • Creating clear differences throughout the album • Representative of society • Sexualized aspects, carefree • Lots of Acid and LSD usage
• Psychedelic life- “looks weird on the outside buts it what everyone wants” • Look at people without thought • “Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream” • Abstract Qualities in humor and writing • Uses everyday playful, for example tugging rope, wrestling which helped to tell their interpersonal story. • Village feel and atmosphere • Uses bands child hood memories, incorporated in album • The Beatles put themselves in control • Magical mysery tour of the Beatles themselves • Psydelic elements added into music • An atmosphere to fuse the element of englsh native that made the Beales feel like the people they were • Avon Garde style is present throughout the album • Untraditional Narrative

The album is based around each of the Beatles trying to find themselves, and as they are recording each of the songs on the album their own personal inner thoughts and emotions that create their own individual selves, yet these ideas overlap and mesh together, becoming a swirling mix of new ways of thinking that becomes the Magical Mystery Tour.

PENNY LANE
BABY YOURE A RICH MAN
ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE
In Penny Lane there is a barber showing photographs Of every head he's had the pleasure to know And all the people that come and go Stop and say hello
How does it feel to be One of the beautiful people? Now that you know who you are. What do you want to be? And have you travelled very far? Far as the eyes can see
Love, love, love Love, love, love Love, love, love
On the corner is a banker with a motorcar The little children laugh at him behind his back And the banker never wears a mack In the pouring rain, very strange Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes There beneath the blue suburban skies I sit, and meanwhile back In Penny Lane there is a fireman with an hourglass And in his pocket is a portrait of the queen He likes to keep his fire engine clean It's a clean machine Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes A four of fish and finger pies In summer, meanwhile back Behind the shelter in the middle of a roundabout The pretty nurse is selling poppies from a tray And though she feels as if she's in a play She is anyway In Penny Lane the barber shaves another customer We see the banker sitting waiting for a trim And then the fireman rushes in From the pouring rain, very strange Penny lane is in my ears and in my eyes There beneath the blue suburban skies I sit, and meanwhile back Penny lane is in my ears and in my eyes There beneath the blue suburban skies Penny Lane
How does it feel to be One of the beautiful people? How often have you been there? Often enough to know What did you see when you were there? Nothing that doesn't show Baby you're a rich man Baby you're a rich man Baby you're a rich man too You keep all your money in a big brown bag inside a zoo What a thing to do Baby you're a rich man Baby you're a rich man Baby you're a rich man too How does it feel to be One of the beautiful people? Tuned to a natural E Happy to be that way Now that you've found another key What are you going to play? Baby you're a rich man Baby you're a rich man Baby you're a rich man too You keep all your money in a big brown bag inside a zoo What a thing to do Baby, baby you're a rich man Baby you're a rich man Baby you're a rich man too Baby you're a rich man Baby you're a rich man Baby, baby you're a rich man too (fade out)
There's nothing you can do that can't be done Nothing you can sing that can't be sung Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game It's easy Nothing you can make that can't be made No one you can save that can't be saved Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time It's easy All you need is love All you need is love All you need is love, love Love is all you need Love, love, love (x3) All you need is love All you need is love All you need is love, love Love is all you need Nothing you can know that isn't known Nothing you can see that isn't shown Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be It's easy All you need is love All you need is love All you need is love, love Love is all you need All you need is love (All together, now!) All you need is love (Everybody!) All you need is love, love Love is all you need Love is all you need (Love is all you need) (x11) Yee-hai! (Love is all you need) Love is all you need (Love is all you need)
Yesterday (Love is all you need) Love is all you need Love is all you need Love is all you need Oh yeah! She loves you, yeah yeah yeah She loves you, yeah yeah yeah

FINAL ALBUM DESIGN
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Overall, I really enjoyed this project a lot. I am very assionate and have lots of interest in product packaging, escpecially album packaging. In the past I have designed album covers for fun. Exploring different types of medium and ways that helped me think in new ways and try designing new solutions. Normally, constructing things is something that I struggle with, exspecially craft. However,I was so excited to have the chance to consurc my album design because I had so many ideas and wanted to really focus on taking my time with my craft and
making every decision with a purpose. I feel that The Magical Mystery Tour album provided an interesting take on the musical styles at the time and intrigued me by its untraditional aproach to the artistic world. This relfects the concepual and expressive ways in which I like to work when designing. Being able to creatively push myself to my limits really helped me create the best possible solution for the project as a whole.
