Other Resources OSU Technology Email
Your OSU email account is your primary source of communication with the university. You will receive information via email from the Office of Residential Life, New Student Orientation and Scholarships and Financial Aid. Once you begin classes, your professors and advisers will use this email address to send important class information.
Your adviser will discuss the benefits of learning communities at your enrollment.
It is very important that you begin checking your email regularly. You can access your email at prodosu.okstate.edu.
Please note: All students are required to live in universityapproved housing (Residential Life, Fraternity or Sorority). If you plan to join a fraternity or a sorority and think you will live in the house, you should still complete your housing application as a backup.
Software Distribution
If you need updated software for your Mac or PC, OSU Information Technology Department allows students to access the latest versions of selected Microsoft products for free. Students may also download access to McAfee anti-virus software. Login at it.okstate.edu/sdc using your O-Key information to access the software.
The Office of Housing and Residential Life If you have not yet completed your housing application, do so as soon as possible. The choice of housing assignment is based on the date your housing application is submitted and deposit is paid. Students who have completed this process receive an email from Residential Life in the spring with a specific date to complete the steps for choosing room assignments. During the housing contract process, you have the option of choosing a Living and Learning Community or Special Interest Housing. While you are not required to choose a specialized community, there may be one that fits your academic or career goals. Learning Communities
For students seeking classes with other students in their area of interest, but without a specific residential requirement, OSU’s academic advising areas offer Learning Community options. An LC allows small groups of freshmen to enroll in two courses with other learning community freshmen. Some benefits include: • Building relationships with other students • Developing study groups with others in multiple classes • Enrolling in reserved sections of courses pre-selected for the community
If you have not yet completed your housing application or would like more information about the Living and Learning Community or Special Interest Housing, visit reslife.okstate.edu.
Scholarships and Financial Aid Higher education requires a great deal of financial planning. The Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid assists families in the navigation of college level financial options. The SFA website, financialaid.okstate.edu, provides resources and links to organizations specializing in educational funding. In addition, timely announcements of scholarship applications and financial aid news are posted to the site. Begin by reading through the resources on the website. Call 405-744-6604 for additional information and assistance. The Scholarships and Financial Aid office updates your eligibility as new test scores and academic information are received. Make sure any changes to your GPA, class standing and ACT/SAT scores are submitted by July 1. If your academic major and/or college changes from the one listed on your application for admission, contact the office at 405-744-6604. Many students do not understand the full cost of attending college. Talk with your family about your budget expectations and what will be expected of you once your classes begin. If you’re expected to hold a part-time job, late spring and early summer is the best time to begin your job search. Also, if you have been awarded a work-study position as part of your financial aid package, you should begin that job search now as those positions fill quickly. Other options include student and parent loans. Discuss both with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid so you know what questions to ask and the types of loans that best fit your needs.

Placement Exams
Placement Exams Students can receive college credit at Oklahoma State University through several placement exams. With the exception of the Math Placement Exam, all placement exams are optional. For additional information regarding Math Placement, COMPASS, AP, CLEP, and IB exams, contact University Assessment and Testing at 405-7446685. For additional information regarding foreign language placement exams, contact Arts and Sciences Student Success Center at 405-744-5658. Foreign Language Advance-Standing Placement Exam (optional)
If you completed at least two years of Spanish, French or German in high school and would like to continue in that language your first semester at OSU, consider taking the Foreign Language Placement Exam to determine course placement. Students who test out of coursework and earn an A or B in the course in which they are placed may earn retroactive advanced standing credit for the sections over which they skipped, up to 10 credit hours. For more information, see flcourses.okstate.edu and click on “Placement Exams.” You will have an opportunity to take this placement exam during your orientation program or later in the semester.
COMPASS Testing (optional)
OSU evaluates the test scores and high school grades of each incoming student to ensure core course placement is the best fit for their success. In some cases, students may be required to complete a pre-college level course before moving on in a particular subject. During orientation and enrollment, advisers may encourage students to take a placement test to see if they may “test out” of a pre-college requirement.
Advanced Placement (optional) College Level Examination Program (optional) International Baccalaureate Program (optional)
OSU grants credit for acceptable scores in the College Board’s Advanced Placement Program, College Level Examination, and International Baccalaureate Program. Visit admissions.okstate.edu/creditbyexamination#CLEP for a list of college-level credit.

Oklahoma State University
• Monday evenings (except May 27 – Memorial Day) for those attending Monday/Tuesday overnight programs
Last summer, OSU began a new mathematics placement program to help ensure students have the best opportunity to succeed in math courses. Every student should complete this exam sometime after May 6th and at least three days prior to their scheduled orientation program.
• Tuesday evenings for those attending Wednesday one day programs
Who needs to take the Math Placement Exam?
Students who plan to take an OSU math course and do not already have college level math credit with a C or better (on a college transcript) in a prerequisite or required math course for their major must take the Math Placement exam for enrollment. *Note: Beginning and intermediate algebra do NOT count as college-level math. Where do I take the Exam?
The best testing environment is in a controlled location conducive to the needs of the test taker. However, OSU will allow an exception for the initial test based on ACT/ SAT score. • If your ACT math score is 19 or greater, or your SAT math score is 460 or greater, your initial exam may be taken from any computer with Internet access. If you would like to retake the exam, subsequent attempts must be done in a PROCTORED setting for test access. • If your ACT math score is below 19, or your SAT math score is below 460, or your test scores are not on file with OSU, you must take the exam in a PROCTORED setting. If the exam is not proctored, the test cannot count for placement purposes. PROCTORING - The following test sites offer proctoring at no charge to OSU students (please make appointments 24 hours in advance): • OSU-Stillwater Testing Center (405-744-5959) • OSU-Tulsa Testing Center (918-594-8232) • OSU-OKC Testing Center (405-945-8648) See placement.okstate.edu/proctor for a complete list of all approved proctor sites, including an internet option using webcam (please note some of these will charge a fee). In addition, you may have a local site contact University Assessment and Testing (405-744-5959) to establish itself as a certified testing site. May I take the test when I come for Orientation?
While it is in your best interest to complete the math placement exam prior to attending New Student Orientation & Enrollment, we will offer the exam in a proctored setting at New Student Orientation sessions this summer. Please be aware the exam will be offered at night prior to evening programs for those attending overnight sessions and the night prior to orientation for those attending one day sessions. If the evening is not a good time for you test, this may not be your best option. The exam will be given in the Math Learning Success Center (5th floor of the Edmon Low Library) from 6:30 – 8:30 as follows:
• Thursday evenings for those attending Thursday/Friday overnight programs • In addition, the exam will be offered on Monday, July 8, and Tuesday, July 9th for those attending the one day programs on Tuesday and Wednesday of that week. How do I take the Exam?
Watch the information videos at placement.okstate.edu/math and click “Take Exam Now” for additional instructions. Please read all the instructions to best understand how to take the test and DO NOT use unapproved aids (calculators, notes, books, websites, people, etc). It is in your best interest to do your own work to ensure course placement matches ability and likelihood of success. How often may the exam be taken?
You may use up to five attempts without cost during an 11-month period. Please note, second and subsequent attempts must be proctored, regardless of ACT or SAT score. A minimum of 24 hours is required between each attempt. For your convenience, learning modules are available following your first exam to serve as a tutorial and refresher. You will have 6 weeks of free access to the modules, beginning the day you first open them. Additional access to the learning modules is available for a fee. What documentation of Math Placement is needed at orientation/enrollment?
If you have taken the placement exam at least three days prior to your enrollment, no documentation is needed. However, in the following cases, you will need the indicated paperwork to avoid math enrollment delays: • If you have completed a college level prerequisite or required course for your major with a C or better and have not already sent your official transcript to OSU, bring a copy of your transcript. • If you are currently enrolled in a college level prerequisite or required math course for your major, bring a printout of your academic schedule. After you finish the course, send official transcripts to Office of Undergraduate Admissions at least one week prior to the start of class. • If you take the Math Placement Exam within a day or two of your enrollment program, bring a copy of your score report in the event your scores have not yet uploaded to the OSU system.
To access the OSU Math Placement Exam visit placement.okstate.edu/math. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact New Student Orientation & Enrollment at 405-744-3636 or University Testing at 405-744-5959.

Academic Choices and Majors
Your Future. Now.

Oklahoma State University
Many people have probably asked about your chosen college major. Choosing an academic path before you have even entered college can be difficult. There are many factors to consider as you plan your route to graduation. You have to consider the decision from many angles to find the best fit. Example 1 Sometimes your career path seems mapped
out for you already. Your grandfather was a doctor, your father is a doctor, and your sister is in medical school. You feel pressure to follow the family profession. However, math may not be your best subject, you may be worried about taking multiple lab science courses, or you may not be excited about the competition for medical school admission.
Discovering Your Options
OSU divides degree programs into six academic colleges. We encourage you to explore those colleges. A list of majors divided by academic college can be found on the back of this book. If you are still undecided about your major and cannot determine a single academic college that houses most of your areas of interest, you can begin your academics in the Learning and Student Success Opportunities Center. The LASSO Center advises students across the university rather than within a specific college. Once an academic course of study is ready to be declared, students will transition to the appropriate college for degree completion. For more information about the LASSO Center, visit lasso.okstate.edu.
Action Now is the time to explore your profession,
test your interests and find a path that better fits your interests. Example 2 There are multiple directions related to
your interests. You may want a degree related to computers but have no idea which area to pursue. OSU has three distinct computer degree areas: Management Science and Information Systems (Business), Computer Science (Arts & Sciences), and Computer Engineering (Engineering, Architecture and Technology). Action Your choice depends on your personal and
career goals. If you have a specific career in mind, research it, and learn what degree areas usually support that career. There are many options. • Visit the specific OSU department website for each degree and discover the areas on which each degree focuses. • Read the course descriptions listed in the university catalog. • Talk to people working in the area or in related areas and ask how they earned their positions and what they studied (or wish they had studied).

COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES
Dear New A&S Student: Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences. We look forward to working with you during New Student Orientation and Enrollment. We know you may be entering OSU with a certain major or with several interests to explore. A&S advising and programs meet needs across this range. Academic Advising: During orientation and for your first OSU semester, you will work with an A&S freshman academic adviser who will help you test and confirm a major or provide introductions to a range of interests to find a good major fit. After one or two semesters, you begin to work with an adviser in the major department. Throughout your OSU career, your academic adviser serves as the central resource for information on academic programs and policies and as a referral to services across the university to meet your academic and personal needs. Students in the Honors College, student athletes and students with disabilities have supplemental advisers to assist with unique requirements, eligibility issues or educational accommodations. Get to know your advisers and let them get to know you. Preprofessional Advising for Health Professions and Law: OSU offers solid course
preparation and advising for students preparing for a health profession or law school. According to these professional schools, there are no degrees designated as “pre-med” or “pre-law.” You may choose any OSU major and incorporate the prerequisite courses for health professions or the skill-developing courses for law school preparation. We offer advising for these professional school goals, including individual advising, workshops and a communication network to keep you on track. Learn more at: prehealth.okstate.edu and prelaw.okstate.edu. During the first semester, Arts and Sciences freshmen enroll in a one-credit hour orientation class that meets twice a week for the first eight weeks. Transition to college, time-management and study skills, campus resources, university policies and procedures, and academic planning to get the most out of the OSU experience are emphasized in the course. Many orientation classes are targeted toward one major or a group of similar majors, so you quickly meet others with the same interests as yourself. A&S Freshman Orientation:
With six undergraduate colleges at OSU and nearly 200 degree plans from which to choose, many students arrive uncertain of a major. If most of your interests fit within the College of Arts and Sciences, our freshman advisers will help identify if any courses must be started in your freshman year to graduate in four years. You will plan schedules that can both test your interests and meet overlapping general education requirements. We welcome you to explore your goals with us. Begin by checking out “What to Do With a Degree in…” at ascareers.okstate.edu. Undecided Students:
Feel free to call us if you have any questions. We look forward to meeting you.

We hope you will consider study abroad during your time at OSU. Global competence is expected of today’s graduates. Students who study abroad gain multicultural skills and stand out in the eyes of employers and admissions officers at graduate schools. To be competitive in today’s global market, it is imperative students leave college with knowledge and experience of the world outside of the U.S. Ask us how you can study abroad and pay the same tuition you would pay while at OSU. Our Human Sciences Living Learning Community is a group of students living together in a beautiful residence hall in The OSU Village (Village Human Sciences), where students form friendships, benefit from academic study partnerships and enjoy great social opportunities. Ask us how to become a member of this special community. You will also benefit personally and professionally from participation in Human Sciences student organizations. Freshmen can apply for membership in the Freshman Scholar Leaders, a group of students engaged in fun and impactful leadership projects. Two other important college-level groups are the Human Sciences Student Council and Ambassadors. Each academic major has its own student organizations, which focus on service, leadership, professional networking and careers associated with that major. Getting involved is easy in Human Sciences. The Human Sciences’ Patricia Kain Knaub Center for Student Success awaits you. Your academic adviser, who specializes in your chosen major, is ready to guide you through the enrollment process and provide advice to help you succeed. LEARNING AND STUDENT SUCCESS OPPORTUNITY CENTER
We're Here to Help Welcome to the Learning and Student Success Opportunity Center and Oklahoma State University. We look forward to meeting you during New Student Orientation and working with you throughout your first year at OSU. Every student needs a place where they are comfortable asking for help, whether it is for free tutoring for a course in which they are struggling or for answers to questions such as “How do I read my class schedule?” or “Where do I drop a course?” We hope the LASSO Center will be that place for you Academic Advising
We know some of you enter OSU with your major already decided while others may have several interests or need time to explore the options at OSU. LASSO advisers work with students in all majors across the university. We are ready to help with your academic needs, whether through planning your semester schedule, exploring different major options or helping to bridge the gap between student life and academic success. Even if you are not advised through the LASSO Center, you may still take advantage of any of our other free programs. Have a Major?
More than 60 percent of students change majors at least one time in their undergraduate career at OSU, and more than 40 percent of those change majors twice. It’s OK and normal if you don’t know your major when you arrive at OSU. Your Freshman Orientation course (UNIV 1111) will explore all the majors on campus and help you with assessments and other tools to determine what major best fits your skills and future interests. Our advisers have working knowledge of programs in all colleges. Academic Tutoring
The Paul Milburn Tutoring Program is a free service offered for students campus-wide. Qualified student tutors are available for one-on-one tutoring in most subjects taught at OSU. Tutoring is available by appointment in various locations around campus. In some instances, weekend tutoring is also available. Students may stop by the LASSO Center's main tutoring office located in 021 Classroom Building, call 405-744-3309, or visit lasso.okstate.edu to schedule an appointment with a tutor. Academic Success Facilitators
Academic Success Facilitators can help you develop and implement the needed academic skills to make it through your first year at OSU. These facilitators are professionals with undergraduate or graduate degrees, often have classroom teaching or mentoring experience, and will be a primary contact for you as you adjust to life at OSU. They will help you organize your academic materials and schedule, and get you on track for a great first year. Once you are settled and successful, meetings decrease in frequency, until you are completely independent and doing well on your own. Student Academic Mentors and Freshman Orientation
New students taking LASSO’s Freshman Orientation course will meet their Student Academic Mentor as part of the orientation course in the fall semester. SAMs are upperclassmen mentors who assist in Freshman Orientation classes and provide you with added guidance, mentorship and assistance throughout the fall semester. Orientation is designed to help new students adjust to the demands of college life, and your SAMs assist in developing and teaching these courses. We look forward to meeting you. If you have any questions before your New Student Orientation program, please give us a call at 405-744-5333 or visit our website at lasso.okstate.edu. Go Pokes. Your LASSO Center Staff

HONORS COLLEGE
Dear New Honors College Student: Welcome to the Honors College, which allows you to experience many of the benefits of a small-college atmosphere with small classes, top teaching faculty and the camaraderie of other outstanding students. At the same time, you are able to take advantage of the many academic and social opportunities provided by a major comprehensive university. Graduates of the Honors College consistently tell us that they have been prepared well for graduate and professional schools as well as for entry into the job market. The Honors College offers approximately 70 honors courses each semester in a variety of curricular areas. Honors classes are typically 20-22 students, and the small class size contributes to a discussion-based, engaging learning environment. Active participants in the Honors College earn priority enrollment for the subsequent semester, enjoy access to the Honors Study Lounge and Computer Lab in historic Old Central, have extended library checkout privileges and the opportunity to live in honors housing in Stout Hall if space is available. The Honors College offers three different awards, the General Honors Award, the College or Departmental Honors Award, and the Honors College Degree, the highest academic distinction awarded to undergraduates at Oklahoma State University. All three awards can be completed within your academic major’s degree requirements. New freshmen are considered for Honors College admission on the basis of high school grade point average, usually 3.75 or higher, weighted or unweighted; standardized test scores, usually an ACT composite score of 27 or higher or an SAT score (critical reading and math)of 1220 or higher; and an optional short essay response (see our web page for essay questions). Honors College applications must be submitted electronically or postmarked by Feb. 1 to be considered for normal admission. Applications submitted after this date will be considered only if space is available. If you do not meet these requirements, but are interested in joining the Honors College or meet initial eligibility requirements but have not yet applied, we would like to extend an invitation to attend the Honors College information session during New Student Orientation. We will work with eligible students on a space-available basis, and if you are not currently eligible you may be able to join the Honors College after your first semester at OSU. If you have been admitted to the Honors College, you are required to attend the Honors College information session during New Student Orientation. You will also meet with an honors adviser after meeting with an academic adviser in your college. We are pleased to welcome you to our supportive community of scholars. Please contact us if you have any questions. Sincerely,
Robert L. Spurrier Jr. Director of the Honors College and Professor of Political Science
Jessica Roark Assistant Director of the Honors College

First-Generation Students Mentoring Program
First-Generation Students Mentoring Program First-generation students are individuals whose parent have not completed a bachelor’s degree. Because navigating a college environment can be confusing, the First2Go program provides a safe and comfortable atmosphere for these students to ask questions and become knowledgeable on the various aspects of the student experience. First2Go helps first-generation students create a deeper sense of belonging to the OSU community by providing support through programming and mentoring. Faculty, staff and graduate students provide resources, encouragement and direction as students transition to OSU. Mentors are available to any first-generation student.
First generation student will also have the opportunity to engage with other first generation students by participating in the First2Go Living Learning Community (LLC). The First2Go LLC will provide unique programs that will focus on transitional needs (i.e. transition from high school to college for the freshmen) with the help of consistent access to resources necessary to be successful academically and socially. If you would like to learn more or participate in this program, visit our website: newstudents.okstate.edu and complete the First2Go Mentee application.
