Tomorrow begins today. We’re defined by what we pass on to the next generation. That’s why ConocoPhillips is working with National Energy Education Development to provide America’s teachers with the training and resources they need to bring energy to life for students. Through this program, we’re getting our kids interested in math and science and teaching them about the importance of conservation. So we can pass on what matters … to the ones who matter most.

Letter from the Oklahoma State University President
Burns Hargis OSU Homecoming Guests,
My wife, the First Cowgirl Ann, and I are delighted to welcome you back “home” for “America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration.” As an Oklahoma State University graduate, Homecoming is truly special. It is an exciting time on our Stillwater campus. We are experiencing record growth in students, record fundraising and a record transformation of our beautiful campus. Thanks to the generosity of Boone Pickens and tens of thousands of other donors, we are approaching our $1 billion Branding Success goal. The campaign is having a lasting impact on student scholarships, faculty support, facilities and programs. I encourage you to be sure to check out the remodeled and expanded Student Union. If you have not seen it, you will be amazed at the fabulous upgrades made to that campus treasure. We have a special Homecoming in store for you this year. Thanks to the hard work and long hours of our Homecoming Steering Committee, the OSU Alumni Association and countless students, OSU boasts a Homecoming like no other. Thousands of visitors will pack the streets Friday night to view the tireless student work and creativity during Walkaround. We will paint the city of Stillwater orange with Saturday’s Sea of Orange Parade, followed by the Cowboy Corral. And I expect us to culminate the week’s fun with a Homecoming football victory over Iowa State. Ann and I hope you have a wonderful time back “home” at OSU. Go Pokes! Burns Hargis, ‘67 Oklahoma State University President

Letter from the Alumni President
Larry Shell
Dear OSU Alumni and Friends, For some of you, this trip to Homecoming 2012 may have been just across town. For others, it is an annual trek over hundreds or thousands of miles. No matter the distance, the journey brings us all back to a special place that’s colored our world orange for more than a century. We grew up here, and we return to relive the memories that molded our past and continue to shape our future. We return for each other and the deep bond that connects us all together. It’s more than a color, a waving song or a campus of brick and mortar. We’re all Cowboys, and this is our time to celebrate our alma mater and its greatest tradition. Along with your OSU Alumni Association, I welcome you back to Stillwater to celebrate ‘The Life, The Legend, The Legacy’ of an event that has transformed our humble yet strong institution. Homecoming is a symbol of who we all are — individuals who are driven to improve our world through instruction, research and extension. We are a family whose diversity is great, but whose soul bleeds orange. You will undoubtedly encounter one of our many students during this week of celebration. Please take a moment to thank each and every one you meet. Without our students, this great event would not be possible. I would also like to thank our staff for their hard work and the contributors to the Homecoming and Student Programs Endowment. Their lives have been advanced by Homecoming in one form or another, and I would encourage you to join them in support if you too experience the overwhelming feelings of family and pride that Homecoming evokes. Welcome home, and Go Pokes!
Larry G. Shell, ‘70 & ‘82 President Oklahoma State University Alumni Association

About the Theme:
The Life,The Legend,The Legacy
Tradition is a concept familiar to the Cowboy family. From the football team walking down Hester Street into Boone Pickens stadium prior to the game to the post-game singing of the Alma Mater, Cowboys gain a sense of loyalty through the traditions of Oklahoma State University. This is why ‘The Life, The Legend, The Legacy’ was chosen as the 2012 Homecoming theme. The Homecoming executive team determined the theme in January from 30 possible ideas. The group ”Ž™Â?ȹ’Â?ČąÂœÂŽÂŒÂ›ÂŽÂ?ȹž—Â?Â’Â•ČąÂŠÂ—ČąÂ˜ÄœÂŒÂ’ÂŠÂ•ČąÂŠÂ—Â—Â˜ÂžÂ—ÂŒÂŽÂ–ÂŽÂ—Â?ČąÂ ÂŠÂœČąÂ–ÂŠÂ?Žȹ’—ȹ ÂŠÂ›ÂŒÂ‘ÇŻČą ‘ŽȹÂ?ŽŠ–ȹÂ?Ž•Â?ȹ’Â?ČąÂ ÂŠÂœČąÂ’Â–Â™Â˜Â›Â?Š—Â?ČąÂ?Â˜Čą embrace and celebrate tradition in the theme for 2012. Grant Dixon, a biochemistry and molecular biology senior from Stigler, Okla., is this year’s Homecoming executive director. “We chose the theme because it encompasses the past, the present and the future,â€? Dixon said. “It is a theme you can enjoy as an alumnus, current student or future student.â€? Homecoming is celebrated annually to celebrate the past, present and future of the university. The OSU Alumni Association has presented Homecoming since 1920. The theme embodies the current climate at the university especially regarding the Branding Success campaign, a $1-billion fundraising initiative started in 2010. “With the Branding Success campaign, alumni and friends are leaving a legacy to uphold the traditions of our past and ensure they continue for future generations of OSU students,â€? Dixon said. ‘Žȹ ˜–ŽŒ˜–’—Â?ČąÂ?›ŠÂ?Â’Â?Â’Â˜Â—ČąÂ•ÂŽÂŠÂ&#x;ÂŽÂœČąÂŒÂžÂ›Â›ÂŽÂ—Â?ČąÂœÂ?žÂ?Ž—Â?ÂœČąÄ™Â•Â•ÂŽÂ?ȹ ’Â?‘ȹ™›’Â?ŽǰȹŠ•ž–—’ȹꕕŽÂ?ȹ ’Â?Â‘ČąÂ—Â˜ÂœÂ?Š•Â?’Šȹ Š—Â?ČąÂ?žÂ?ž›Žȹ Â˜Â Â‹Â˜Â˘ÂœČąÄ™Â•Â•ÂŽÂ?ȹ ’Â?‘ȹŽŠÂ?ÂŽÂ›Â—ÂŽÂœÂœČąÂŠÂ—Â?ČąÂŽÂĄÂŒÂ’Â?Ž–Ž—Â?ÇŻČąČ Â‘ÂŽČą Â’Â?ÂŽÇ°ČąÂ?‘Žȹ ÂŽÂ?Ž—Â?Ç°ČąÂ?‘Žȹ ÂŽÂ?ÂŠÂŒÂ˘Č‚ČąÂŠÂ›ÂŽČąÂŠÂ•Â•Čą concepts embraced by the tradition that is considered “America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration.â€?

Meet the Executive Director
Grant Dixon
Q: A: Q: A: Q: A: Q: A: Q: A:
What is the best part of being Executive Director? The best part is working with the various groups of people and sustaining the tradition. I have had the privilege of communicating with the Alumni Association, the Homecoming executive team, university students, Greek life, alumni and members of the Stillwater community. There is no greater feeling than seeing such a variety of groups come together for one weekend to showcase and witness OSU’s strongest tradition and “America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration.” What is your role in this year’s Homecoming? My role primarily consists of overseeing the activities of the Homecoming executives and big committee members. As Executive Director, my main responsibilities are ensuring that all components are being executed and the team is on schedule. Who will win the football game? Is that even a question? Your very own Oklahoma State Cowboys will win!! What’s your favorite aspect of OSU? Personally, it would be the traditions. From freshman follies to the Bedlam rivalry, all the deep-rooted traditions at Oklahoma State make OSU what it is today. What legacy do you hope to leave here? Through hard work, perseverance, and a smile, anything is possible at Oklahoma State. OSU gives students the opportunity to grow and mature into whatever their hearts desire.

sea of orange parade Each year thousands of people line the sides of Main Street in Downtown Stillwater to experience the Sea of Orange Parade. This year, the parade will be on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 20. It will begin at the corner of 12th and Main Street, and travel north on Main ending at Hall of Fame Avenue. The excitement of the parade is fun for everyone as it includes not only OSU students, but also is a way for the community of Stillwater to be involved with the Homecoming tradition. The procession will include Grand Marshal Lieutenant General Jerry Max Bunyard, OSU royalty, floats, Homecoming executives, high school bands, and many others involved with the Homecoming experience. The parade will be broadcast live on the Alumni Association website, orangeconnection.org, and OStateTV, with a pre-parade broadcast beginning one hour prior to the parade. The broadcast is a student production of the OSU School of Media and Strategic Communications. Please join us as we celebrate one of Homecoming’s oldest traditions – the Sea of Orange Parade.

The Lion King epitomizes the three points of this year’s homecoming theme —“The Life, The Legend, The Legacy. The circle of life that Parker represents is a vibrant life with residents interacting with each other, studying, playing intramural sports, coming together for Homecoming, and having one of the most vibrant hall governments at OSU. The legacy in the movie is Mufasa’s leadership of his kingdom being transferred to Symba and then Symba passing his leadership on to his child Kiara. OSU’s legacy, too, lives inside all of its’ alumni and current students.

Although he passed away earlier this year, Neil Armstrong has been an inspiration to many. Some Stout students have even cited his acomplishment as their motivation for entering into a science or engineering major. NASA’s recent Curiosity landing has also inspired us all. To us, space symbolizes our hopes and dreams. We have an idea of what is out there, but we have yet to fully explore our potential or realized what exactly the university holds. Healthy Animals — Healthy People Many of OSU’s 3,485 alumni from the Center for Veterinary Health Sciences have rewarding, lifelong careers in animal care. For some, their DVM degree is just a starting point. Take Dr. Isaiah J. Fidler, for example. The 1963 DVM grad directs the Cancer Metastasis Research Center at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Dr. Fidler has been helping find a cure for cancer for more than 40 years. OSU is focused on bright minds, building brighter futures and the brightest world for all.
Where Their Legacy Began: Orange pride has struck a chord in the hearts of the class of 1962 alumni for 50 years. However, for some alumni in the class of 1962, Oklahoma State University is in their heart for more reasons than just the traditions and memories made while in Stillwater. Not only did these alumni fall in love with the campus, but they also fell in love with their spouse. With 50 years since their graduation and 40 or more years of marriage under their belts, these couples’ love for the Cowboys and each other has withstood the test of time. During my freshmen year at OSU, I lived in the Beta Theta Pi house, and my future wife, Judy Ervin, lived in Stout Hall in a room only about 200 feet from my room. In fact, I happened to date my future wife’s roommate, but never met her and did not even know her name. Fortunately for me, a good friend and high school classmate Charlene Brown Gibson, who was an Alpha Chi Omega, introduced me to her sorority sister, Judy, at the Alpha Chi bid house.

During a very cold and snowy winter I decided I didn’t particularly care for the apartment I lived in so I moved into Murray Hall. At that time Murray was the only coed dorm on campus. A good friend of mine asked me if I would go on a date with another graduate student, Ernie Lowden, who also lived in Murray Hall. I wasn’t too sure about this so I secretly checked him out and one day conveniently ran into him in the Student Union. He asked me to dinner and a movie. Dinner was at Ancestors, which was at that time a very nice Stillwater restaurant. The movie we saw was “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” We continued to date, became engaged and were married the next summer. We have returned to the OSU campus for my sorority reunion, football games, and College of Education events.
We rapidly fell in love and got married at semester break. Become Part of the Oklahoma State University Alumni Association Legacy Program Oklahoma State University is not just a place to learn; it is a place where thousands of students and alumni call home. Over the years, the OSU Alumni Association has been working hard to instill the love of orange into children. In 2002, the Alumni Association started the Legacy program. This program introduces young Oklahoma State legacies to the world of orange. The definition of a legacy is any child, up to 16 years old, that has a parent or grandparent who is a current member
of Alumni Association. The Legacy program helps to initiate a relationship with Oklahoma State and its young members by sending them storybooks, an OSU backpack and birthday cards from Pistol Pete. Mark Paden, ’97, and his wife, Shayna, ‘97, said the Legacy program introduced their two boys William, 7, and Alex, 4, to the orange life that every Cowboy knows. “We wanted our kids to have that same positive experience that we did,” Paden said. “We

get as excited as the boys when they receive correspondence in the mail from OSU.” These feelings are more than mutual. The Alumni Association loves to see the number of children in the Legacy program grow. There are currently more than 4,000 children registered. “We loved reading the Pistol Pete and Me book to them when they were infants,” Paden said. “But we truly treasure it now that William can read it to us and his little brother.”

Grandparent University is a three-day camp held in June on the Oklahoma State campus and provides a fun, educational experience for Legacies and their grandparents. Pati Crosier has been coming to Grandparent University since the beginning. “We plan our vacations around Grandparent University,” Crosier said. “The program is a big deal in this family. I took three of my boys last year. We enrolled in architecture and got to design a town and then each of us assembled a building. The name of our town was Petesburg — how clever!” Crosier’s grandsons Trevor Crosier, Spencer Stanbury and Connor Lee look forward to going to Grandparent University each year.
“I talk about Grandparent University all the time,” Crosier said. “The program has grown so much over the years that I have been coming. People even come from the east and west coast. It’s so impressive.”

“The kids really learn a lot,” Crosier said. “It’s amazing to see the college professors get down on the same level as the children and teach them something that is both fun and educational.” At the end of the three-day camp, the children and their grandparents “graduate” with a “degree” in their selected “major.” Photo by OSU Alumni Association
