EDITOR’S NOTE Dear Readers, As you all know that it is the month of Independence, hence by looking at the past 10 years and comparing it with 2016, we stands out shining up, onto the way of development with the way Pakistan Army is defending the nation, along with the government boosting up the economy. The only thing that worries me now is that who’s behind these remaining terrorist activities. Are they actually a part of the external forces or someone within us, who have chosen the wrong path? Whoever they may be, if they are the enemies of Pakistan then they are our enemies too, and we all have to wage war against them, united. This is not just the war for the We are often found criticizing the government, but have we ever thought of the fact whether we have played our role as true Pakistanis? Have we done anything for the betterment of the nation, or atleast for the people around us? If not, then we do not have the right to criticize either. Think about it and decide for yourself. May Allah bless my pride, my home, my identity – Pakistan!

Happy Independence!

SOCIAL NETWORKING CONNECTING OR ISOLATING PEOPLE?

Social networking sites provide a resourceful ways for people to connect with each other. You can share photos, videos and much more with people you know such as family and friends and with those whom you are newly connecting with to extend your PR. While it is a unique way to connect with others, there are risks where experts continue to consider including the possibility of isolation. Many people tend to forget that social networking was practically non-existent at one point in the past. So, if this is another way for people to communicate with others, can this eventually also encourage people to isolate themselves from others?

A Person who dedicated his entire life to his country, who Nuclear Power in the world. Brave & down to earth,

Dr. ABDUL QADEER KHAN By: Adnan Faisal / Isra Shams

A world-renowned nuclear scientist and metallurgical engineer, widely acclaimed as the “Founder and Father of Pakistan’s Nuclear Deterrence Program”. Brands Magazine pays tribute to this living legend by having the privilege of covering his exclusive interview. He has been honored with highest awards, degrees and titles notably: Mohsin-e-Pakistan, FPAS, D. Eng, D. Sc, Hilal-e-Imtiaz, and Nishan-e-Imtiaz.

NO ONE CAN BUY THE LOVE AND AFFECTION THAT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO ME BY THE PEOPLE OF PAKISTAN. BM: How and when did you start your professional career? AQK: I completed my Ph. D Eng. Degree from Leuven, one of the largest companies there. I worked as a consultant in nuclear technology with them, which is where I gained my initial expertise.

BM: What was the force that brought you back to Pakistan? AQK: Love for my adopted motherland and the apprehension that the Indians could go for our jugular vein and could further dismember the country after their successful nuclear explosion. BM: Which and when was the happiest moment of your life? AQK: My happiest and most memorable day was our marriage day, the days our daughters were born and the day I received my Ph. D degree. Later of course, the day we carried out our successful nuclear explosions also stands out BM: when you wrote letter to Bhutto, you were stranger to the Pakistan Atomic team and faced great opposition. However, Z. A. Bhutto forced you to stay back and assigned a secret mission. How do you feel about it? AQK: Yes, I was young, unknown scientist in Pakistan. Munir Ahmad khan and his people did their best to make things not have a doctorate. He had a BSC. Eng degree from Lahore followed by a 9 month diploma in Electrical power from North Carolina State Polytechnic. He did not know the ABC of nuclear weapons and did not have any practical experience. It was a very tough time for my family and I. Munir gave me a contract with a remuneration of 3,000 and I did car, driver or any other facilities. We lived in a house in F-8/1 which at that time, was at the very outer limit of Islamabad with no tarred roads or tarred lights. BM: Did you have any regrets on your decision to leave a well-established job in Holland? AQK: No, it was a well-considered decision meant to help my country and save its very existence and sovereignty. BM: How did your wife support you in coming and settling down in Pakistan? AQK: My wife, through a foreigner (and having two daughters to cope with) stood by me throughout, supported me and encouraged me not to give up. Without her love and support I would not have been able to cope with all the nothing serious.

army) turned out to be most ungrateful and treated me like a traitor. They caused us mental torture as well as physical inconvenience. There were times when they wouldn’t even allow our daughters to see us. That still hurts to this day. BM: Tell us about your successfully completed work on Industrial uranium and enrichment for peaceful nuclear technology? gy entailing investments of billions of dollars. The centrifuge technology in which I had become an expert during my work in Holland was the most advanced and had been developed by hundreds of scientist and engineers from Holland, Germany and England. BM: You built a hospital by the name of Dr. AQ Khan Hospital. What are the various services provided there? AQK: The services of general physicians, cardiologist, pediatric, gynecologist, ENT specialist, dermatologist, radiologist, pathologist, psychiatrist etc. are available, as are Color Doppler, ultrasound, digital X-ray, test laboratory, operation theatre and pharmacy. In short, it is a well-equipped, neat and clean facility and the local community is really happy with the services available. BM: What was the objective behind Dr. A Q Khan Hospital Trust and what expectations do you have with it? AQK: As we all are well aware that in our country the abatement of medical facilities is a huge challenge, which the government hospitals have failed to provide due to negligence, unhygienic conditions and overcrowding. For this purpose I along with my likeminded, kind-hearted friends and philanthropist set up a 300 bed welfare hospital in Lahore, near Minar-e-Pakistan. It is to be built on 16 acre Plot focusing on heart and lung diseases of Children. In order to meet the urgent needs of the local community, we have been running an Outdoor patients department, where thousands are receiving free treatment. Those willing and able to pay for the services are encouraged to do so and the money goes into the funds for free medical care. We hope to start construction of the main building within the few weeks and the project will be completed in about 2 years. The whole program is being run under a Trust. Mr. Shaukat Virk is working as the Executive Director of the Hospital. Being a charitable hospital I request Philanthropist to join hands with me and support this epic cause through your donations and Zakat. BM: You are a symbol of Pride of the nation. What message do you have for the people of Pakistan? been given to me by the people of Pakistan. And I cherish it with all my heart. And there is no religion bigger than Humanity and being a Muslim it’s our utmost responsibility to help the poor and needy people of our society. My message to the people especially to the young people is to work hard; dream big and never lose hope and put all your world to see.

THE MOTIVATION CAME FROM AN EXPLOSION OF A NUCLEAR DEVICE IN INDIA, WHICH GOT ME INTO THINKING OF HELPING PAKISTAN.

The Leading Corporate & Youth Magazine of Pakistan

BM: Who was your inspiration that motivated you to stand where you are now? AQK: The motivation to start a nuclear program was the Indian Explosion of a nuclear device on 18th May, 1974. I thought very carefully how I could help Pakistan. I wrote a letter to Mr. Bhutto outlining my ideas to which he then invited me to come and see him. We came on Christmas Eve, 1974, and I met him soon after. I was an unknown young scientist in Pakistan and so Mr. Bhutto asked me to explain the whole process to him which I did.

BM: How did you react when you were home arrest during Musharraf era? AQK: That was a very painful period for the whole family. The

BLOGGING AWAY By: Isra Shams writing as hourly writing and with that level of timeliness, the provisionality of every word is even more pressing and the risk of error or the thrill of prescience that much greater.

Blogs, a contraction of "Weblogs," are the common person's publishing tool. This form of instant and global self-publishing, made possible by technology widely available only for removes from the act of writing any considered or lengthy review. There has been an eminent rise in blogging, and recording short extracts of thoughts and actions. Sites such as Twitter and the social networking giant Facebook encourages maintaining relationships through communicating these bite-sized pieces of information about your life. A very cool site, Tumblr, acts as an aggregator and a micro-blogger - it allows you to easily post quotes, links, photos, and even pull The cutting-edge quality of blogs has made news reading or Twitter from people who witnessed the event before it is mistakes are more prevalent and opinions are often presented as fact. Double-checking things presented in blogs is an important step in assimilating information.

Anyone who has blogged his thoughts for an extended time will recognize this world. Bloggers have scant opportunity to collect our thoughts, to wait until events have settled and a clear pattern emerges. We blog now as news reaches us, as facts emerge. This is partly true for all forms of journalism, which is, as its etymology suggests, daily writing, always subject to subsequent revision. And a good columnist will adjust position and judgment and even political loyalty over time, depending on events. But a blog is not so much daily

It was obvious from the start that blogging was revolutionary change brought up by the world of digital media. Every writer since the printing press has longed for a means to publish himself and reach, instantly, any reader on Earth. Every professional writer has paid some dues waiting for an editor’s nod, or enduring a publisher’s incompetence, or being ground to literary dust by a legion of fact-checkers and copy editors. If you added up the time a writer once had lifetime buried in the interstices. But with one click of the Publish Now button, all these troubles evaporate.

“UNLIKE ANY SINGLE PIECE OF PRINT JOURNALISM, ITS BORDERS ARE EXTREMELY PENETRABLE AND ITS TRUTH ESSENTIALLY BRIEF.” Fellow bloggers are always expanding this knowledge base. Eight years ago, the blogosphere felt like a handful of like a universe of cranks, with vast, energetic readerships, overwhelming but there is a connection between the understanding of the early years and the industry it has become today and the connection is human individuality. A blog, therefore, bends on the surface of the ocean but has its anchorage in waters deeper than those print media is technologically able to exploit. It disempowers the writer to that extent, of course. The blogger can get away with less any writer of the past a node among other nodes, connected track-backs that make the blogosphere, at its best, a conversation, rather than a production.

INSIDE THE MIND OF A SUICIDE BOMBER Most criminals do not expect to die when they commit a crime. If they did, there wouldn’t be so many of them. If you are motivated by greed or hunger you want to live after your act in order to enjoy what you got from it. This also applies to most people who commit crimes for personal reasons like perceived insults to one’s warrant suicide. Atleast you want to live long enough to dance on the other fellow’s grave. I don’t accept the theory that suicide bombers are motivated mainly by religion. If a true believer actually believes there is a paradise and he can enter it encouraging factor but I seriously doubt whether there are that many Muslims whose depth of commitment to Islam is enough by itself to bring them to pressing that lethal button. After all, it isn’t the religion itself that urges violence on its followers, it is leaders with radical political and social agendas who use some of the symbolism of Islam to gin up the frenzy in their followers’ need to go ahead and blow themselves up. So what is the source of the intense hatred someone needs, to become a suicide bomber? little do they know of the reality what the rest of the world is going to be viewing on their TV channels. Aside from their brutal brainwashing, I believe that their isolation from the outside world makes them perfect targets for recruitment. Individual bombers show no personality disorders and the attacks are often politically motigenerating greater support. Moreover, the motivations are complex: “humiliation, revenge, and altruism”, all drive the individual to engage in, and the community to condone, suicide bombing. Indeed, as Hassan notes, participating in suicide understanding these motivations and addressing them, it would appear that the governments or organizations that seek to end suicide bombings are likely to be disappointed. While many researchers believe there are several reasons why people become suicide bombers, there are three primary conclusions that each individual may agree upon, and think are the root causes. Suicide bombers are scared. Terrorist leaders convince them that the Americans and Christians are bad people who come to loot, kill, steal, rape, and destroy their country. They even back their claims up with actual video footage that’s been doctored to show white, American men the cause. Others are scared the terrorists will kill their family and friends if they would-be suicide bombers that there are glorious rewards awaiting them in heaven. They only have to become a martyr to be free from the earthly warzone and join their brothers and sisters in the afterlife. Other suicide bombers are convinced, they simply will not die. Terrorist leaders perform rituals and place prayers (e.g. spells and potions) on the suicide bombers or the bomb itself. This is supposed to convince them that they will not die.

18 BRANDS

While these factors are the primary force that drives the person to become a suicide bomber, there are other aspects to consider. Social class, poverty, education, religious beliefs, and current events also play a huge part in whether or not a person will bend to the promises and fear to recruit them. Not all people will give in to these elements and will stay strong. But others, whether sociological or psychological, will succumb to the recruiter’s demands. In the end, recruiters only use advanced marketing strategies and fear to win the day. Education to discourage the misinformation is the solution to dissuade people from becoming suicide bombers.

THIS IS INSANITY!

An Exclusive Interview with

TAHER G SACHAK CEO & MD

EFU Life Assurance Ltd.

I was born in Tanzania, East Africa and went to UK at age 12 to attend a boarding school. I am a graduate in Business Studies from Bournemouth University, and also have a post-graduate Diploma in Management Studies from Liverpool University. Following my studies, I joined the British Civil Service and after 5 years decided to pursue a career in life assurance. I held executive positions in major UK Life Assurance Companies, Allied Century Life before coming to Pakistan in 1994 to join EFU and MD. I am also a Director of EFU General Insurance and Vice Chairman of Allianz EFU Health Pakistan Institute of Corporate Governance.

AS THE LEADING LIFE INSURANCE PROVIDER, OUR VISION IS TO TAKE LIFE INSURANCE TO EVERY HOUSEHOLD IN PAKISTAN.

BM: What was the reason behind stepping into this industry, passion or co incidence? TGS: I believe most people who join life insurance sales do so by accident because at that point in their lives they are in a state of flux! It was no different for me! I was moving from London to Bristol and an acquaintance suggested that before I find a ‘proper” job I can join the life insurance company he was with. That’s how my journey started. It’s only when you have joined that you appreciate the inherent value of my industry and the job satisfaction you derive.

BM: Every successful company has to undergo a lot of challenges, How do you cope with all the criticism & face those challenges? TGS: My Founding Chairman, Mr Roshen Ali Bhimjee told me when I joined “don’t be afraid of making mistakes”! You simply can’t grow an organization without getting things wrong at times! I consider challenges a way to break barriers, to reinvent and transform. When faced with a challenge or criticism, it’s important to keep yourself positive, think long term and to take a step back and realign with the bigger picture. BM: What is your opinion about the recent trend of competitive advertising? TGS: The trend of brand wars may gain talkability, especially in today’s digital age, but if it turns negative it is not something I would not endorse. It’s key for a brand to establish its own competitive advantage and have a clear unique sales proposition (USP). Speak about what your brand offers and stands for, rather than putting down the competition. That I feel gains more respect for the brand, and gets you loyal customers that will stay with you over the long term. BM: What major changes have you seen in the Insurance industry, in last 5 years and how do you see the life insurance industry moving forward? TGS: The life insurance sector has been in a high-growth mode in the last few years. In 2015, the life insurance total gross premium crossed the Rs. 150 Billion mark, registering a 5 year annualized growth of approximately 25%. One of the primary drivers for this growth momentum has been the Bancassurance distribution channel i.e. partnerships with banks for the distribution of life insurance products. During these last 5 years there has been a lot of emphasis on developing distribution channels and investment in technology. Other than the traditional mediums of servicing clients, companies are looking at expanding their digital and social media presence. Customers are smarter than ever and expect the very best when it comes to financial planning. There has also been a lot of emphasis on awareness about financial planning and life insurance products and the life insurance industry is now seen actively promoting their brand on both ATL and BTL mediums. Although the life insurance penetration is a mere 0.5% of GDP, the double digit growth in insurance premiums is an indicator of the immense growth potential in the Life insurance sector. I expect this growth momentum to continue in the near future. The emphasis on developing existing and new distribution channels together with the investment in technology will continue to fuel growth. The opening up of window Takaful operations during 2015 will give a boost to the marketing of Shariah compliant insurance and this in turn will increase the size of the insurance market.

BM: What do you plan on doing for the bright future of the Pakistani youth? TGS: Pakistan is a nation of 200 million people, 65 per cent of whom are less than 25 years of age. It is one of the richest countries of the world in terms of its human as well as material resources. It has full potential of becoming a great economic power, if we get the right leadership, capable of effectively utilizing its enormous resources. Youth has the power to move the country into the next phase of political and economic independence if we are able to channelize their thoughts and their time in productive activities. Given the importance of Youth to Pakistan's future development, it is necessary to provide the means and environment in which this invaluable human resource attains the optimal growth potential, equipped with the requisite character, strength and motivation to participate in the main stream of life. Developing the youth, creating opportunities for the future leaders of tomorrow is something very close to my heart. One of the ways is through creation of jobs. In EFU Life, the average age of our employees is 32, and we are on a constant search for young talent, to develop them and hone their skills to be future leaders. BM: EFU Life had recently launched an interesting campaign ‘Meri Shaan Mera Pakistan’ on Independence Day. Could you tell us about the initiative? TGS: ‘Meri Shaan, Mera Pakistan’ is a CSR initiative by EFU Life to beautify the streets of Karachi through thematic wall art. On this Independence Day, EFU Life extended its support to neighbourhoods of Karachi through a beautification project aimed at reclaiming the walls of major public areas of the city and displaying patriotism through art. The campaign celebrates the spirit of patriotism, depicting the rich cultural heritage of Pakistan, the diversity of its people and ultimately the nation’s flag, that brings all its people together. The project is aimed at eradicating wall chalking and highlights not only the heritage & culture of Pakistan, but also encourages citizens to take responsibility for the city. What makes this campaign truly unique is the underlying message of patriotism, and the involvement of the youth, with active participation from the students of different universities to execute the project. The first project was a 2000 square foot wall at Ayesha Manzil. Along with this location, beautification at NCC (National Coaching Center) has also now been completed. The Company is further exploring avenues of executing such projects in other parts of the country.

The Leading Corporate & Youth Magazine of Pakistan

BM: EFU Life recently has won the award for the “Best Insurance Company of Pakistan”, what is the secret behind this success? TGS: There is no panacea. It’s doing the right things day in day out--perseverance, hard work, commitment and being client-centric in everything you do. Our brand EFU has been in existence since 1932, and has evolved from a company set up in Calcutta, to finding a new home in 1947 in a new country, to becoming the largest life company in Afro-Asian countries (excluding Japan) by 1961, and then going through nationalization and merging into a public entity and then the rebirth again in 1992 after privatization. We started the company from scratch in 1992 with a handful of employees, with a paid capital of only Rs.30 million. Today, we have more than two hundred branches, a field force of around five thousand dedicated and trained people, who are marketing our products throughout the country. The paid up capital has grown to Rs.1billion, the largest in the private sector, and we are the country’s largest asset managers, managing funds in excess of Rs.85 billion. The accolades are a testament to an uncompromising will to provide the best solutions and services supported by product and technological innovations, our growing distribution footprint, and most importantly our human capital, which stands committed and is working tirelessly to set higher benchmarks.

BM: What is the next big thing we will witness by EFU Life Assurance in future? TGS: I do not see any one “earth shattering” thing but an amalgamation of different ideas to provide innovative and efficient financial planning solutions that cater to all pockets and segments of our society. Our vision as the leading life insurance provider is to take life insurance to every household in Pakistan. Last year we launched an initiative ‘Choti Rakam Bara Kamal’ which was a step to reaching the rural parts of Pakistan to educate people on the many benefits of life insurance and the financial security that it offers to families. The campaign tagline ‘Choti Rakam Bara Kamal’ is linked with the bigger idea of ‘Life mein kamal karna zaroori hai’. It signifies the affordability of life insurance to a common man, conveying that with a small amount (Choti Rakam), one can achieve big (Bara Kamal) in life. So far we have covered over 60 cities of rural Sindh, Punjab, and KPK since the launch last year, and we intend to take this rural awareness drive forward. There will also be a lot of emphasis on productivity of existing channels. Focus on IT will continue, especially adopting new trends in technology and the Company will continue to invest in enhancing the technology base for back-end operations and for front end sales and services to clients. Improvements in technology have been at the forefront of all our initiatives. This includes the development of mobility concepts and services. We intend to deliver more value through our services which complement our products that let our clients enjoy peace of mind while financially enabling them to plan for the important milestones in life. Last year, EFU Life became the first company to receive the license and launched its Window Takaful Operations, under the brand name Hemayah. The advent of Hemayah offers financial planning solutions to customers in a Shariah Compliant way. The step is of strategic importance as it opens up a new market segment for the company and serves as a pathway of growth for the industry. The main task that lies ahead for us for future growth is to further expand our network and distribution channels for marketing our new products, and continue to grow our portfolio and our offerings.

"AN AWARD-WINNING INNOVATOR AND GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY LEADER"HUAWEI - STRENGTHENING THE IMAGE OF CHINA'S MANUFACTURING-SECTOR The Global business world is a complex and dynamic arena, where only the most competitive and rapidly evolving enterprises can thrive. Even if the world’s most successful company shows lack of innovation and fails to adapt fluidly, to the rapidly changing needs and preferences of the consumers, its global leadership will be quickly challenged by a more responsive and robust contender. One such example is Huawei – one of the youngest and biggest brands in the telecom world. Over, the past decades, the manufacturing sector in China has developed tremendously and captured an overwhelming share of the global markets, in most categories of high-tech and low-tech products, due to their enormous scale, lowest cost of production and diverse manufacturing capabilities. However, in recent years, several high-quality manufacturers have emerged in China – these robust companies are pursuing a vision to compete and lead on a global scale, by producing world-class quality. Huawei is one exemplary Chinese enterprise which has achieved great milestones of success and innovation within a few years. It is a fast-emerging global leader in telecom technologies, which is creating fascinating new technologies and highly reliable products, by making robust investments in Research and Innovation, and it has already conquered a big market share. Many of Huawei’s products and technologies have already won presti-

gious global awards due to their outstanding performance and popularity. Huawei has achieved tremendous performance, innovation and popularity in this arena too. Its consumer business has shown rapid and immense growth within the past couple of years, whereby Huawei has quickly become a household name in Pakisatan too. THE HEALTH FOUNDATION INITIATES ‘BARBER HYGIENE’ CAMPAIGN ACROSS PAKISTAN

26 BRANDS

In association with World Hepatitis day – A national campaign titled ‘Barber Hygiene’ was launched by The Health Foundation. The campaign functions as a Public Service Announcement which highlights the growing risks of shaving with unhygienic and unsafe shaving products used at barber shops and men’s salons. The main objective behind this campaign is to raise awareness of common health effects that are widespread as a result of using of contaminated razors, emphasizing on how barbers lack certain knowledge with regards to the dangers of re-using shaving equipment. The Health Foundation is focused entirely on the prevention and control of Hepatitis in Pakistan, where every 12th person is suffering from either Hepatitis B or C. Pakistan also ranks 2nd highest in world occurrence for Hepatitis B & C. The growing effort by THF is embedded in facts that notify how Hepatitis is the 8th largest cause for deaths worldwide, where every 30 seconds someone dies from Hepatitis in the Asia Pacific region, and the death rate from Hepatitis is 3 times more the HIV/ AIDS. THF’s mission is to change the attitude of the public by educating them how everyday males easily neglect the common hazards of unclean shaving equipment. By the use of anti-bacterial solutions and changing blades does not assure the removal of Hepatitis germs, resulting in a single drop of contaminated blood causing infection. As local health institutions lack resources to cater for such issues, THF has taken the initiative to enforce an attitude of self-consciousness within Pakistani males so they can exercise caution when getting a shave at barbers and men’s salons. Public walks and seminars will be conducted by The Health Foundation to educate the people about the root causes and effects of Hepatitis, no a global scale. One of the key causes for Hepatitis infection is unsafe/ unscreened blood transfusion where the smallest drop of contaminated blood can spread the disease. Similar to the re-use of needles & syringes, unsafe barber shaving can also lead to Hepatitis transmission. This is where barbers, not knowing the real risks, re-use the same blades, razor, towel & brushes on multiple people. More importantly, the risk of blood borne transmission is amplified by the lack of

relevant knowledge that barbers and their clients possess and this multiplies the risk of infection. Part of the program is to ultimately lead to reducing and preventing the risks of Hepatitis through educating barbers and customers of these delicate but dangerous factors, whilst imposing the prevention of re-using unsterilized/ unsafe shaving tools on various customers. Self-shaving is also a major driver of this avoidance from Hepatitis risks, allowing Pakistani males to be in control of their shaving equipment.

YOU DON’T HATE FEMINISM. YOU JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND IT

We use the language of their excuses. We must stop doing this. These murders are based on the belief that a woman is the property of her family. Should the woman’s virtue come into question, for whatever reason? No! We need to see the crime through the eyes of those attacked, because these acts of gender violence attack is something more than women's bodies, something delicate and precious. Equality does not mean that men and women must be identical in everything, it means treating people as individuals regardless of their gender. There is no such thing as a conservative feminist. If you’re a feminist, it means you want women to have the same rights and opportunities that men do. WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS THE DEVELOPING WORLD! It has not always been easy for women to start their own business. Women have had to face a lot of problems. They have sometimes had difficulty working with male business leaders. It has been difficult for women to manage a family as well as a business. Today, however, the situation is changing. A report by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor said that “in 2010 more than 104 million women aged 18-64 had started or were managing a new business. Another 83 million women were managing businesses that they started about three years earlier.” In some countries in the developing world, about half of all entrepreneurs are women. However, the situation is different in the developed world. But the number of female entrepreneurs is increasing day by day.

In the past, some of the most successful businesses started by women were in cosmetics and fashion. Let us start with the case of Estee Lauder. Lauder’s uncle made and sold beauty products like creams and perfumes. The young Lauder sold some of them to her school friends. When she was older, she sold her products in large department stores in New York. Lauder once said: “I have always sold, every day of my life. If I believe in something, I sell it, and I stop at nothing to sell it.” Lauder had a very successful career. Today, the Estee Lauder company makes more than 7 billion US$ every year. Another very successful woman entrepreneur is Gabrielle “coco” Bonheur Chanel. She came from a poor family. As a child, she

was looked after by nuns. The nuns taught her how to sew and she became interested in making clothes. Later, Chanel opened a store in Paris. She started an important fashion house. Today Chanel is one of the most important fashion houses in the world. Her perfume “Chanel Number 5,” is still a symbol of wealth and luxury. In the 1970s, another female entrepreneur, Anita Roddick started the Body Shop. The Body Shop was very different from other cosmetics shops. It sold products that had natural ingredients. The company made a big effort to protect the environment. The general public liked the Body Shop and its principles. The business grew very quickly. Soon, there were Body Shops all over the world. Entrepreneur Hilary Devey has had success in the traditionally male industry of transport. In the 1990s, Hilary started Pall-Ex, which is now a global logistics company. While Hilary was working for a transport company, she had an idea for a new kind of business. She knew that after small transport companies made a delivery, they often had to travel back home with an empty truck. She had to sell her house to start her business. Today, the company makes about £100 million every year. It was not easy for any of these women entrepreneurs to find success. But their stories show how with the right mentality, ability and hard work, women can be as good as men at creating multi-million pound businesses.

HOW TO IMPRESS YOUR BOSS?

By: Yumna Tirmizi When you join a company, the first thing every new employee should do apart from indulging with other employees is to impress their boss. Why? Because your boss is the person with the greatest potential to improve your work life, since he or she has the most direct control over your day-to-day activities. Here are six ways to impress your Boss: COMPLETE THE TASK THAT EVERYONE FORGETS There are little things in every workplace that everybody forgets, from specific work processes that get overlooked to maintenance issues like turning the fans on in the morning. We're not saying you should do that every day or clean other stuff but you can pitch in and take some pride in your work area because consider your work place as your second home. If you keep your home clean so there’s no shame in cleaning the place where you work. It won't take long for this type of etiquette to be noticed. KEEP A CLEAN WORK SPACE This is one of a balancing act. Basically, you want your space to look worked in: not too messy, but not totally plain. If you have no paper on your desk, it doesn't look like you're working. But if you have no desk visible under all that paper, it doesn't look like you're working either. If the stuff you have on your desk is that much important, it's worth having it organized and usable. Put your filing cabinet to work or, if it's really bad, get yourself a document scanner and digitizing your files. Lastly, when you leave work for the day, take 60 seconds to clean up your area.

42 BRANDS

COME IN EARLY AND LEAVE LATE It's not about how much time you put in at work, it's about the quality of work you do! Quality is more important than quantity. As long as the quality's there, the quantity helps too. Nobody's asking you to stay an extra four hours. In fact, don't

do that as it can actually make it look like you're falling behind or not managing your time correctly. Instead, look at it from your boss' perspective: Two employees are due in at 9 a.m. One arrives at 8:40, the other slides in like clockwork at 8:59. The second employee is at work because he “has to be.” He is following the rule, true, but the boss may well assume that if the rule wasn't there he'd be late every day. The first employee, on the other hand, gives the impression that he's excited to be at work and is there to tackle his goals. So try to come in early. DRESS UP! Dress for the job you want, not for the job you have. Dress up properly even if you're not trying to get promoted, but just want to expand the job you have, dressing well and grooming properly is a nice way to do it. You want to give the impression you're pleased to be at work and take it seriously. If you're clean-shaven, shave daily. If you have facial hair, keep it groomed and shower before coming. SAVE THE COMPANY MONEY A company can have more money in two ways: 1) Earning more; and 2) Spending less. While you can contribute to the company's profits in many ways, you have direct control over cutting expenses. Keep an eye unwrapped for ways the company can spend less, and share your ideas early and often. The day may come when the company passes the savings on to you in the form of a larger paycheck. COME PREPARED If you're showing up to work prepared to work, you are on the right track. You should show up prepared and you should stay on top of your work throughout the day. You should be prepared with all the information you need for each meeting or project.

BM: Digital has brought about a massive change in the world of marketing. How do you think it will affect the market shareholdings in Pakistan? MJ: Digital will transform the media scene in this country as it has done in every other country. It will change the perspective of marketing because digital can measure the new matrix. We used to be able to measure frequencies when it came to the buying of television, now you can measure consumer engagement, as well. You can now actually measure an impression notifying the fact whether someone has actually watched your Ad. This way you can have a two way dialogue with your consumer, and build communities. I don’t necessarily think that television will not be in business, but print will not stay, however we will certainly switch their transition platforms, by having their company’s own web portal. Ultimately, I think digital is a delivery system, where it fundamentally changes the industry because it allows the consumer to say, “I want this and I want it now,” this way you are in charge of the consumption of that content, and that’s transformation.

will sap you of your growing will-power and faith in yourself, and thus must be avoided at all costs.

STOP COMPARING YOURSELF WITH THE WHOLE WORLD

Self-trust is the ability and the strength to believe in our own AND JUST BE YOURSELF ... existence, no matter what the odds. This belief is developed and regenerated in those who are assured about their potential and footing. You have to stop comparing yourself with others who to give up, to hold on, and to move on, after a setback has occurred. We steel ourselves, and assure ourselves that things will get better, because we will make them better for ourselves. Self-trust is this very act, which enables us to take chances and what makes us feel equal to the people around us.

WAYS OF ENHANCING SELF-TRUST TRUST SOMEONE TO TRUST YOURSELF BETTER. TALK YOUR TROUBLES OUT ...

It is often said that help comes to those who ask for it, which is why you must give vent to your pent-up insecurities. You will need to open up and talk about your troubles. You will need to speak about your insecurities to a trusted few, who you're sure would not judge you, or demean you in any way. If you are close to your family or friends, then it would be nice to talk to someone you consider wise, and seek advice about your inner turmoil. You may speak to a therapist if you wish to keep your personal information under wraps and private. Your lack self-trust may be related to a myriad of other personal issues,

yourself over your shortcomings, and work on your weaknesses to make yourself better. You must learn to respect other individuals, as well as yourself and the person you are. Everyone has their own set of talents and drawbacks, which is what makes them the people they are. You too have your own set of qualities, which sets you apart from the rest. Stop allowing stereotypical ideologies and trends to make you feel inadequate or insigburdened by other people's expectations.

UNDERSTAND AND ACCEPT YOURSELF FOR WHO YOU ARE AND WHO YOU WERE TRULY MEANT TO BE ...

Understand who you really are, and where your priorities lie. You must know what your life's principles are, and how you wish to lead your life based on those very principles. This knowledge of your conscience will help you feel contentment and peace. You will trust yourself to make the right choices in life, choices which learn from your own mistakes, and teach you to learn from the mistakes of others. You will gradually begin to understand more about yourself, and the things you desire and need out of your existence.

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND ONLY THEN WILL OTHERS FIND YOUR REAL POTENTIAL WITHIN YOURSELF AND BELIEVE IN YOU ... YOU'LL FIND A BETTER YOU ...

In order to be able to trust yourself, you will need to believe in Once you begin to develop a stronger self-esteem, you will your worth as a human being. You will need to face your fears gradually unravel the innate qualities of your personality. You - will understand the things you are capable of and can achieve, This is easier said than done, and is a task that will require believe

you can muster from within. Do not allow anyone to tell you that you are not good enough for something. You alone should be the judge of whether you are suitable or unsuitable for accomplishing a particular task. Seek inspiration by reading about people who have surpassed similar hurdles in their lives, and have stepped dent and successful individuals. Your role models must be individuals who you can look up to, people who give you motivation, and not

before. For instance, John never believed in himself, and always thought he was not smart enough, or educated enough. This is the reason why he spent most of his life working as a low paid worker. Then after a few years he began to believe that he could be more and achieve more, and that his life had a lot of good things to dent and began to take on greater responsibility at work. His reputation grew and soon he was promoted. Therefore, progress is in our hands, and we are the ones to decide if we are ready and adequately prepared to take on challenges as and when they present themselves to us. Every failure is a stepping stone to success, and we keep learning along the way. We will be wiser tomorrow than we think we are today, simply because we observe and learn from our past experiences.

OUR VOICES ARE LOST IN A TIDE OF SEEKING JUSTICE

This distinction between those who have status to seek justice for others and those for whom they seek it makes the activity seeking justice morally ambiguous. You don’t believe in justice: Being mugged or wronged but of these things can be terrifying and leave you a bit vulnerable still decided not to report the police because it would not yourself. It’s OK to be imperfect; it’s OK to make mistakes. Don’t amount to anything because you believe justice won’t be let that hold you back from trying. We serve a gracious God who can turn our mess into something beautiful, and He’s not served. 5. You think God’s justice is automatic: How many times have afraid to do so. Seeking justice for yourself is not a noble or virtuous act. It’s normal and spontaneous indeed. Who feels that life treats them with perfect fairness? It’s easy for us to engage in charity, throwing money at a group of people or a cause, while missing the true call for justice. We instead choose to educate ourselves just enough to get by, to appease our guilt and give us a conversation starter at our next social gathering. You cannot be powerless and oppressed yourself. You have to possess power or you cannot help those without it. And you cannot be a member of the oppressed

How can we claim to seek justice for others when we don’t do justice ourselves? And how can we seek true justice for ourselves when we turn a blind eye to the injustice we do to others? Perhaps, if we will concentrate our hearts on doing justice in all our acts, we will be better able to seek justice for others. And if we focus on doing justice we might not be so insistent on seeking justice for ourselves.

If you’re a working man or woman then you will agree with me that sometimes it gets very hard to actually look interesting in a boring meeting. Not all meetings are interesting. Adopting an appropriate facial look for a meeting is a talent worth mastering. To go through meetings looking frustrated but balanced is what we should all be seeking for. It is superior, powerful but not dishonest. It is a bit frightening but it is just perfect. This question of how to assemble your face when you are sitting round a table at work listening to other people talk is important. The average executive or manager spends about four hours a day in meetings, most of which is spent in silence half-listening to the person talking while studying the faces of the people who are not. This suggests we have got it all wrong. We worry about the intuition we make when we speak, but pay no time worrying about how we look when we are silent. Observe people while sitting in a meeting.
