FAVELLA HOUSE

Living around the chimney

The analysis of ‘Woning Luc Gees’ (photo below) by architect Eugeen Liebaut as a starting point. The studio ‘brand! brand! FAVELA HOUSE wonen rond de schouw brand!’ presented the assignment of redesigning this house, as if it had to be rebuilt after being burned down. The new design drew inspiration from the remnants of the original one and had to be designed for the same plot, while also maintaining the same program. Some of the outer walls, the foundations, as well as the brick chimney, imaginatively survived the fire. From there on, the new house takes shape as it forms itself around the chimney, nesting itself within the original outer walls. Each programmatic type of room is expressed as an autonomous building. A coverable grid structure thereafter provides an outer space connection between the buildings, as walkways between favella houses.

Reshaping Curzon Street Station Birmingham Birmingham (UK) is well known for its shopping facilities, but, besides this very ostentatious commercial activity, the city holds a lot of hidden treasures. As a former industrial city, Birmingham still houses heavy industry in a big part of the city center. This industrial area, Digbeth, has great potential but is currently very excluded from the city’s activities and developments. By containing 25% of the city’s total amount of parking spaces, Digbeth’s current primary function is a parkinglot for the rest of the city and its vibrant commercial center adjacent to Digbeth. The exclusion, from public transport, as well as in a programmatic way, will only be enhanced by the newly planned High Speed Train Station, to be built in 2026. This HS2 Station will connect Birmingham to London, which brings great developmental opportunities, but the urban implementation of the station will only enhance the exclusion. This project aims to revise the planned station and its urban surroundings, by reknitting the network, to develop and connect Digbeth. Programmatic city use percentages

A station is a place of encounter, HS3 will be a point of intersection where the different parts of the city come together. The site is located at the unoccupied heart enclosed by different programmatic zones, which allows the urban fabric to literally spread into the site. The result will be a newly activated, mixed use zone, generated by inputs from the surrounding urban fabric. Train stations generally function as places of departure and arrival, but the proposed HS3 design will also function as a place to stay, through a range of programmatic inputs. To tackle Digbeth’s urban exclusion, 3 main public spaces are created, each with a different typology, but all making sure that there is no specific front, nor back side to the station. They provide a collection of atmospheres, as presented below:

Instead of creating another border, as will be the case when HS2 arrives, HS3 works as a connector for all parts of the city. The station, along with its revised urban implementation, will together provide a mix of programs and functions, transforming the area of Digbeth into a well connected and integrated part of Birmingham. The arrival of the station will now be beneficial to Digbeth as well, rather than causing enhanced segregation. This urban design studio consisted of 3 teams, each with different, but complementing, focus areas, working towards one masterplan. MINI

Microliving, Living Alone Together This project is an exploration of flexible, minimalistic living. The individual unit, suitable for up to 2 people, is as small in square metres as possible, yet still creates a sense of spaciousness. The unit is built up out of 4 static walls, containing all the wet areas, accompanied by 4 dynamic walls, which allow not only flexible use of space, but also expansion of space. The dynamic walls therefore offer the opportunity to also share space and function communally in a cohousing situation. Envisioning architecture as flexible and adaptable, makes the future of microliving reach endless potential.

CATALINAS NORTE X:

1.

A new urban model for a fragmented urban fabric

PASEO DEL BAJO

Enhancement of the existing connections and thereby activating the natural reserve that now regains its function as the green lungs for the city.

This urban design project, based on a remote analysis, tackles the fragmentedness of Buenos Aires’ urban fabric. The proposal is a threefold strategy, which leads to the development of a new urban model for the plot of Catalinas Norte II, now: Catalinas Norte X

2. 3

HIGHLINE 31

Reappropriation of the infrastructural space in order to dissolve the borders between different urban fragments.

3. CATALINAS NORTE X

Releasing economic and developmental pressure, to then present a new urban model that fills in the missing link of the integrative buffer.

What originally served as a dumping area for construction debris and rubble from demolished buildings, started to develop as a real wetland where fauna and flora could thrive. Declared as an ecological reserve in 1986, it now houses 2000+ species among which birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and native vegetation, such as alder forests. Nowadays, the location has become a popular attraction to escape the city with activities such as jogging, cycling and birdwatching.

The increasing popularity of the reserve also has its downside: having suffered from more than 400 fires due to human negligence since the declaration in 1986, the question arises how this area can be used as an urban green lung while still protecting the valuable natural habitat. The reserve has restricted access as it has closing hours and only two entrance gates. Together with strict rules, the activities are controled. The heavily polluted water of La Plata and the presence of old debris presents dangerous risks and therefore bathing is strictly prohibited.

The strenghtening of Paseo del Bajo’s transversal connectivity, through specific inputs that activate the ecological reserve, results in a better connected urban fabric. Thereby, a first step was made in the strategy towards a better integrated, connected, greener and more durable urban fabric.

EASA HOSPITALITY Finding the Framework

BABEL

“come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves.”

gen. 11:4-6

“Taking the bible story of the tower of Babel as a starting point. The workshop will offer creators (aka. participants) the chance to construct their ideas on a defined site, without long planning processes, creating a structure that serves all Easians. The tutors will just take care of the framework that is necessary to allow the creators to start building from day one and they will mediate and communicate with the creators to ensure a connected structure is created.” Creation: The Stairway to Babel served the Easians as a welcoming entrance to the Babel site in the former Bulows barrack yard. It was used as a place to hang out, meet, have lunches in the sun and get high up in the tree. Co-creators: Martin Kunc (CZ), Klea Sulka (AL)

NOMADS

RE:EASA

“After changing multiple locations, the nomads find a place they call home. They don’t stay there for too long, but mostly they don’t totally leave the region. They form a community of people with similar interests”

Participant task Belgian team: “Choose your RE:__ and implement it on a subject of choice.” How can we RE:inhabit forgotten places? The way 500+ nomadic architecture students formed a community and RE:inhabited Rijeka for two weeks? Creation: The Nomads Livingroom is a foldable structure that could easily be moved and set up at a different location in just a few seconds. Furniture for the livingroom was created out of left-over materials found on site, in order to RE:cycle, Re:use, RE:__ and to raise awareness to everything that is being disposed and to think of it in a RE:__ way.

TWO SKYLIGHTS AND A WALL Exhibiting Architecture through Space The exhibition is about creating spaces without making spaces, inspired by Juliaan Lampens’ architecture. The definition of the ceiling will enhance the existing flows in the room by compressing them towards the skylights. The solid concrete mass will define the character of the space underneath it and divides the former uniform space into different typologies without literally dividing it.

SCHOOL

Revisiting the Flemish Modern Project - Social Housing The Jan de Voslei social housing complex, located in the south of Antwerp, just outside the city ring, houses 7 slabs and 3 towers on an area approximately the size of Antwerp’s city park. The towers, recently added to the list of protected heritage, are fully being stripped and reconstructed at the moment. Therefore, we accept the presence of the towers and the slabs on the site as a given. The real challenge, and hence the focus point of this project, lies in the vast amount of open and undefined space in between the slabs and the towers. The site, marked in red, shows a clear interruption of the urban fabric, which causes enhanced segregation of the already marginalised social housing inhabitants. This project therefore focuses on the physical as well as the social integration of the site. The proposal is a conceptual design for the open space that drapes itself as a carpet underneath the towers and slabs.

44

The strategy is developed through a site visit, followed by a listing of potentials. This way the site is treated primarily based on its surroundings, working from the large to the small scale. District market On the commercial aspect, the site is clearly devided in two areas. On the left side we have the commercial mainstreet, where many different facilities can be found inbetween other streets of dwelling. The right area is a cleatly empty surface where the Jos Smolderen buildings are located. Providing a market on our plot, gives the possibility to connect with the commercial activities in the other area. In the market vegetables of the community gardens can get sold to support the local trade.

An open field in dire park anticipates the events for the neigh bility of the natural a nient because it’s lo of Antwerpen-Zuid. I plenty of schools ca field and even the ev can have a reciproca with the device.

Playground The playground is located as a connector in the site. It’s surrounded by many schools in the neighbourhood and can give service as an escape and meeting point for the children. This place is located in a safe area inbetween the buildings and the community gardens. The device functions as a place where children can lose their imagination and use it in their own way.

Cosy entrance The different pavements on the road and the green entrance at the street side gives way to the covered entry of the device. A public feeling of the Belgian courtyard can be experienced in combination with the restaurant that provides fresh meals with vegetables from the community garden. So this hidden corner becomes a large, open and pleasant place, what seems as a building block on the outside.
