Mode ist Vielfalt, das Spiel des Individuums mit sich selbst und mit seiner Umgebung, ist Koketterie und Ernsthaftigkeit, sichtbares Zeichen von Zugehörigkeit, zugleich Verstecken, Aufzeigen des finanziell Möglichen, Eintauchen in eine Welt der Gleichheit – nichts weiter als ein Kaleidoskop des menschlichen Daseins, erfüllt mit Freude, umgeben vom Hauch des Besonderen.

Hochglanzprodukte zeugen vom Phänomen Mode, begeistert blättern wir durch den Wald von Schnitten, Stoffen, Accessoires, Schönheit und Extravaganz. Wir erahnen, Mode ist Kunst, wissen, sie ist mehr als der Laufsteg zeigt. Doch was ist Mode genau? Um das zu ergründen, haben wir vom Unit F büro für mode uns auf die Suche begeben.

Unit F hat zwischen 2000 und 2013 die zeitgenössische Mode betrachtet, so manchen weißen Fleck auf dem österreichischen Modeatlas entdeckt und viele Designerinnen und Designer auf ihrem Weg in die Öffentlichkeit begleitet und gefördert (www.unit-f.at). Um diese weißen Stellen auf der Modelandkarte zu füllen, haben sich 16 Autorinnen und Autoren gemeinsam mit den Herausgebern auf Erkundung in die Modewelt begeben. Und so vielschichtig Mode ist, so different sind die Sichtweisen der Verfasserinnen und Verfasser, die aus zeitgenössischer Perspektive einen Blick auf die lange und bewegte Geschichte des österreichischen Modeschaffens und der Modemacher der letzten drei Jahrhunderte werfen.

Fashion has many faces. It is a game we play with ourselves and with our surroundings, it is coquetry and sincerity, a visible sign of belonging and also of concealing, an indication of financial affluence, immersion in a world of equality – nothing less than a kaleidoscope of human existence, full of happiness, enveloped in an air of the extraordinary.

Arrays of glossy products evidence the fashion phenomenon; enthusiastically we leaf through the forest of silhouettes, fabrics, accessories, beauty, and extravagance. We sense that fashion is art, and we know that there is more to it than the catwalk presents. But what is fashion exactly?

At Unit F we set out on a quest to fathom this question. Between 2000 and 2013 Unit F studied contemporary fashion with a focus on Austria in order to discover some of the blind spots in the country’s fashion atlas and to accompany and support many designers on their road to realizing their talent (www.unit-f.at).

The ambition of the book before you is to charge these points with content. And as multifaceted as fashion itself are the different viewpoints of the 16 authors who, from a contemporary perspective, cast a glance on the long and eventful history of Austrian fashion and its creators over the past three centuries.

Ikonen der Mode stilsichere, herausragende, bewunderns wert mutige, stilprägende und bildende Leitfiguren in Sachen Kleidung. Die ersten waren mit Sicherheit Frauen: Sie „stylten“ die Erzeugnisse der Tailleure, versahen sie mit Stickereien, Borten und anderen Dekorationen. Die Putzmacherinnen – Rose Bertin und Bertha Goldwag Rose Bertin gründete 1770 ihren eigenen Laden „Au Grand Mogol“ in der Rue Saint-Honoré, schnell fand sie Kundschaft unter einflussreichen adligen Damen. Die Herzogin von Chartres machte sie mit Marie Antoinette bekannt, deren exklusive Hoflieferantin sie von 1772 bis zur Revolution war. Madame Bertin, die als Modistin Kleider nicht schneiderte, sondern für das Verschönern von Kleidern und Frisur zuständig war und damit Modetrends schuf, ließ ihre Ideen von ihren dreißig Arbeiterinnen anfertigen.

Nachdem Marie Antoinette 1774 zur französischen Königin gekrönt worden war, stellte ihr Rose Bertin zweimal wöchentlich ihre neuesten Kreationen vor und konferierte dabei gelegentlich über Stunden mit ihrer adligen Kundin. Der freundschaftliche Umgang zwischen der Königin und der Putzmacherin aus der Unterschicht wurde skeptisch betrachtet, da Rose Bertin ihre Kreationen teuer verkaufte. Die berüch­ tigten „Poufs“ und spektakuläre Arrangements aus Blumen, Früchten, Federn, sogar Geschichten um ein bestimmtes Thema, setzten sich auf den Köpfen der eleganten Damen durch.

Kaum bekannt hingegen ist die Wiener Putzmacherin Bertha Goldwag, die zwischen 1863 und 1871 damit beschäftigt war, Hauskleidung, Atlashosen, Hausmäntel und samtene Baretts, Schlummerkissen, Tisch- und Bettdecken, Polster und Rosengirlanden für Richard Wagner anzufertigen. Verschwenderisch gab er Tausende von Gulden dafür aus, die er oft nur langsam abbezahlen konnte. Berta Goldwag erhielt von Wagner genaue Skizzen und Mengenangaben seiner bevorzugten Stoffe, Bänder, Spitzen und Schnitte. Auch Farbangaben ließ er ihr zukommen. Für die größtenteils schweren Satins bevorzugte er Farben wie Hellrosa, Dunkelrosa, zartes Blau, Carmoisin und „Neurot“.

Nachzulesen sind die Details in den „Briefen Wagners an sein Putzmacherin“, die von Daniel Spitzer vorerst verschlüsselt mit dem Verweis „Wie gleicht er dem Weibe“ in der Neuen Freien Presse veröffentlicht wurden.

Die Beziehungen zu Bertha begannen damit, dass sie Wagner, als er in einem Wiener Hotel wohnte, ein Sofakissen änderte. „In der ersten Zeit lieferte ich bloß seidene Hemden. Dann musste ich verschiedene Samtbarette anfertigen und schließlich seidene, hoch schließende Jacken und verschiedene Schlafröcke.“ Der Hof und die Bedeutung der HoflieferantInnen Wer keine aristokratische oder noble Klientel hatte, der galt nichts. Der Titel der Hof- und Kammerlieferanten wirkte

Madame Bertin – who as a modiste didn’t tailor clothes rather was responsible for the beautification of garments and hairdresses, and thus was a creator of fashion trends – had thirty personnel to produce her ideas. After Marie Antoinette was crowned the Queen of France in 1774, twice per week Rose Bertin would present her creations to her and occasionally conferred with the noble client for hours at a time. This friendship-like relationship between the Queen and the lowerclass milliner was seen with skepticism as Rose Bertin asked costly prices for her works. The notorious “poufs” and spectacular arrangements of flowers, fruit, feathers, and even tales on a particular topic soon became popular adornments on the elegant ladies’ heads.

Hardly known, in contrast, is the Viennese milliner Bertha Goldwag, who was busy manufacturing house attire, atlas pants, dressing gowns and velvet barrettes, slumber cushions, table and bedspreads, pillows, and rose garlands for Richard Wagner between 1863 and 1871. He wantonly spent thousands of guilders, which he often could only pay back slowly.

Bertha Goldwag received precise sketches and desired quantities for Wagner’s preferred fabrics, ribbons, lace, and cuts. He also provided information about the colors: He fancied the primarily heavy satins in bright and dark pink, pale blue, carmoisine, and “new red”.

The details can be read in Wagner’s letters to his milliner, which were also published by Daniel Spitzer in the Neue Freie Presse, initially encrypted with the reference: “How like the woman he looks!”

The relationship with Bertha began when she fashioned a sofa pillow for Wagner at the hotel where he lived in Vienna. “I just delivered his silk shirts at first. Then I had to tailor various velvet barrettes, and in the end also high-cut silk jackets and different sleeping gowns.”

The Royal Court and the Role of Court Purveyors If you didn’t have aristocratic or noble clients, you were nobody. The title “Hof- und Kammerlieferant” (ImperialRoyal Court and Chamber Purveyor) was a precious seal of quality. One had to make an application with fees and hope that it would also be approved.

Mit Blick über das Wasser in die Unendlichkeit. Oder auf den Sandboden, um dort etwas aus der Vergangenheit zu finden.

Verwittertes Holz, animalische Überbleibsel, ein Stück Gummi.

Helmut Lang macht es fast jeden Tag. Verlässt sein herrliches Anwesen in Long Island nahe Manhattan, überquert die Dünen und marschiert den Strand entlang. Ehe er dann – wieder zu Hause – im Atelier verschwindet, sich seiner Kunst widmet, seinen Gästen, den Tieren, der Küche oder seinem Garten.

2005 verließ er das Modebusiness. Und ist dort doch nach wie vor so präsent, dass man nur immer wieder perplex sein kann. Mit seinen Innovationen, die so stilprägend waren, dass die Modewelt auch heute noch nicht darauf verzichten kann.

Aufhören zu essen, wenn es am besten schmeckt – wer kann das schon? Aufhören Mode zu machen, wenn man am Zenit seiner Schaffenskraft ist. Von den Medien umjubelt, von vielen Kollegen und der Textilindustrie bis ins letzte Bändchen kopiert. Helmut Lang hat es getan. Nicht um der alten Weisheit Genüge zu tun. Nicht aus Übermut. Nicht ohne Anlass.

Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte Lang immer „Nein“ gesagt, statt „nur herein“, wenn Geld an die Türe geklopft hatte. Als man ihm angeboten hatte, Designer bei Balenciaga zu werden zum Beispiel. Ihn interessieren Türen, hinter denen er neue Erkenntnisse vermutet, mehr. Türen, die auf seinem Weg liegen.

Die möchte er öffnen. So viele wie möglich. Im optimalen Moment.

Wollte man über Helmut Lang ein Buch schreiben, könnte es „Vom richtigen Zeitpunkt“ heißen. Den hat er beim Türenöffnen immer erwischt.

Schon bei seinem Debut in Paris. Acht Jahre war er davor in Österreich bereits im Modegeschäft gewesen, hatte ab 1977 mit einem Made-to-Measure-Studio in Wien begonnen, mit spektakulären Shows und Pariser Models wie Jerry Hall, von sich reden und Schulden gemacht. 1984 begann er für Trachtenspezialist Gössl eine spezielle Linie zu entwerfen: Fallwick. Sie sollte die Trachtenmode revolutionieren. So cool war noch niemand mit den traditionellen Elementen umgegangen, seien es gewalkte Stoffe, Knöpfe, Gürtel oder Bänder, ohne ihnen die Authentizität zu rauben. Trachtenexpertin Gexi Tostmann kurz und bündig: „Er war einfach genial.“ In Wien eröffnete Lang ein Geschäft und schloss es wieder, tauchte auf und unter und ließ schließlich all seine in diesen wechselvollen Zeiten gemachten Erfahrungen und Bekanntschaften auf ein Ziel los: auf Paris.

Zwei Jahre dauerten die Vorbereitungen, Angebote, Rückschläge, Verhandlungen, Schachzüge, Zufälle, Vorstöße und Abmachungen, bis es endlich so weit war. Cool nützte der Österreicher dann die Gunst der Stunde, als Paris im Frühjahr 1986

Go ing fo r a wa l k. Along the seaside. With a view across the water to infinity. Or into the sand to find some­ thing from the past. Weathered wood, animal remains, a piece of rubber. Helmut Lang does it almost every day. Leaves his gorgeous estate on Long Island close to Manhattan, crosses the dunes and roams along the beach. Until he – back at home – disappears in his studio to tend to his art, his guests, the animals, the kitchen, or his garden.

In 2005 he left the fashion business. Yet he is still so omnipresent that one can only be perplexed over and over again.

His innovations were so influential that the scene cannot do without them to this day.

Stop eating when it tastes the best – who can actually do that? Stop making fashion when you are at the peak of your creativity? Acclaimed by the media, copied by many colleagues and the textile industry to the last little ribbon. Helmut Lang did it. Not to adhere to some ancient wisdom. Not out of cockiness. Not without cause.

Up to this point Lang had always said “No” instead of “Come in” when money was knocking on the door. For example, when he was offered to be the designer at Balenciaga. He’s more interested in doors behind which he reckons new insight.

Doors he encounters on his path. They’re the ones he wants to open. As many as possible. At precisely the right moment.

If one was to write a book about Helmut Lang it could be called “At the Right Moment”. He has always caught it when opening a door.

Already with his debut in Paris. At this point he had already been active in the Austrian fashion business for eight years, starting in 1977 with a made-to-measure studio in Vienna, raising attention – and running into debts – with spectacular shows and Parisian models like Jerry Hall. In 1984 he began with the design of a special collection for Gössl, an Austrian traditional costume firm: Fallwick. It would revo­lu­tionize this clothing style. No one before had dealt with these traditional elements with such coolness – be it milled fabrics, buttons, belts, or ribbons – and without robbing their authenticity. Traditional costumes expert Gexi Tostmann sums it up: “He was simply brilliant.” In Vienna, Lang opened a store and closed it again, appeared and disappeared, and finally focused all the expe­riences and contacts he had made in these eventful times on one target: Paris.

It took two years of preparations, offers, setbacks, nego­ tiations, gambits, coincidences, forays, and agreements until it finally happened. In spring 1986 the Austrian clear­headedly seized an opportunity when Paris was in a frenzy about Vienna.

Centre Georges Pompidou, which was besieged by the enthusiastic French, he presented his autumn collection in the “Viennese coffee house” set up there. And naturally parallel with the prêt-à-porter shows when all the fashion media and buyers were in Paris.

In the program folder he announced his fashion as being “in the style of Josef Hoffmann, Adolf Loos, and Kolo Moser”, describing it as “one line, purist in detail, but as erotic as Egon Schiele”. He went a step further with the groups of models: The first part was called “L’Equipe de Josef Hoffmann”, then followed “Alma Mahler, Muse des Artistes”, and finally “Les Mademoiselles” from Demel – the famous confectionary and coffee house – and “L’Orchestre Philharmonique”.

His collection was proclaimed a sensation and the next new thing; media and buyers beat a path to his door. A situation one can normally only dream of for a fashion show debut. His understatement back in Vienna: “I indeed had certain hopes.” And looking back, realistic but without anger, he said: “Everyone who makes fashion wants to go to Paris. It’s like a graduation.

I’ve made shows in Vienna with international quality and consequently followed my track. This was recognized abroad, also in Paris. I brought a self-evident, unique style to Paris and left my infant shoes behind. Vienna is certainly one of the hardest places to survive. Once you are past this, almost nothing can happen to you anymore.”

The Trendsetter In return, extraordinary things happened in the fashion world thanks to Helmut Lang. On all levels, from organization to prevailing trends.

While being happy to already be named in one breath with local heroes such as Claude Montana and Azzedine Alaia after the first presentation, Helmut Lang knew one thing for sure: his second collection had to confirm – when not top – the sensational success of the first one.

On a rainy Paris day, countless journalists and buyers from all over the world don’t shy away from making their way to the little side street off Place des Victoires. In no time the premises at Edition du Regard is hopelessly overcrowded; cursing photo-

Das Wort fällt mittlerweile öfter als Textilindustrie. In den vergangenen zwei Jahrzehnten ändert sich aber nicht nur das Vokabular, sondern die gesamte Modebranche, und das sowohl national als auch international. Es formieren sich weltweit agierende Konzerne, die ein immer größeres Markenportfolio unter ihrem Dach vereinen. Sie erwirken, dass die Produktionsprozesse allmählich in neue geografische Zusammenhänge ver­ lagert werden und setzen damit den Rest der Branche gehörig unter Druck. Parallel bedingt die digitale Revolution eine gewisse Ortlosigkeit, wodurch die für ihre kreativen Impulse gelobten Modeschauplätze im Off (also außerhalb von Paris, Mailand, New York oder London) größere Bedeutung gewinnen. Es tauchen flexible Arbeitsmodelle auf, die die Lebenswelt der Kreativen nachhaltig verändern. Der Niedergang der Textilindustrie sowie aller anderen traditionellen Industrien in Europa wird begleitet vom Aufstieg der so genannten Kreativen Klasse. So auch

This term is used now more often than textile industry. In the past two decades not only the vocabulary has changed but the entire fashion sector, both nationally and internationally. Globally operating cor­ porations merge an increasingly augmented brand portfolio under one roof. They are causing production processes to be gradually relocated in new geographic contexts, and therewith they truly put the rest of the branch under pressure. Parallel the digital revolution induces a sort of placelessness, whereby the off-sites of the fashion world (read outside of Paris, Milan, New York, or London), praised for their creative impulses, are becoming noticeably more important. Flexible work models are emerging that have a profound impact on the lives of creatives. The decline of the textile industry along with all other traditional industries in Europe is accompanied by the rise of

the so-called creative class. Also in Austria.

wächst eine sehr talentierte Generation voller Tatendrang heran, die bald auch ins Ausland zu drängen beginnt.

1997 gründen die Angewandte-Absolventen Hermann Fankhauser und Helga Ruthner „Wendy&Jim“. Mit ihren provokanten Männerkollektionen werden sie rasch Teil des Showgeschehens in Paris und Mitglieder der französischen Modekammer. Petar Petrov baut sich ebenfalls über die Pariser Menswear Shows einen Namen und internationalen Kundenstock auf. Der gebürtige Bulgare lebt seit 1999 in Wien und absolviert unter Raf Simons die Modeklasse. Mittlerweile ist auch seine ebenso minimalistische Damenkollektion am Markt – und zwar sehr erfolgreich. Das an der Akademie der bildenden Künste ausgebildete Duo Wally Salner und Johannes Schweiger präsentiert seine an der Schnittstelle zwischen Kunst, Mode und elektronischer Musik positionierten Werke regelmäßig während der Semaine du Prêt-à-porter. Das gemeinsame Label fabrics interseason ist allerdings schon jetzt Geschichte. 2012 zeigen sie ihre eigene Retrospektive und sperren zu. Im Accessoire-Bereich ist es der Name Florian Ladstätter, der auch über die Grenzen hinweg regelmäßig auftaucht.

Sein unter FLorian Design erhältlicher Schmuck verbindet seine Ausbildung: Philosophie plus Handwerkskunst.

Mit seinen auffälligen Kreationen schafft er es zu Colette und in die „Vogue“.

Erst nach und nach erscheinen globale „Lifestyle“-Magazine, allen voran „i-D“, „Dazed & Confused“ oder „Self Service“, von denen avantgardistische Impulse ausgehen. In Österreich tragen in dieser Phase viele sich überschneidende, publikumswirksame

Their joint label already history. In 2012 they showcased their own retrospective and then closed the doors. In the accessories department it is the name Florian Ladstätter that also regularly comes up across the borders. Available under FLorian Design, his jewelry is inspired by his education: philosophy plus craftsmanship. His eye-catching creations got him into Colette and “Vogue”. The Victoria & Albert Museum and the MAK Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art in Vienna have purchased his work.

Fashion in the News The millennium is just approaching. Fashion is still veiled with an air of mystery, when not to say elitism. One cannot participate per mouse click in world-rate defilees, designers are not superstars, stylists are seen as strange birds. Then global lifestyle magazines gradually hit the scene, first and foremost “i-D”, “Dazed & Confused,” or “Self Service”, and inspire avant-garde impulses. In Austria in this phase, numerous overlapping events with great audience appeal contribute to generating a new awareness for fashion.

One of them is the Life Ball in Vienna: Since 1993 Gery Keszler has been successfully changing the world’s perception of Austria with his AIDS charity event. Once per year, with a show by top international designers like Vivienne Westwood or John Galliano as a central element of the ball, he draws the interest of fashion and lifestyle fans from around the world to the capital. International caliber fashion shows – are a novelty at this point in time. As a fixed date in the Vienna fashion calendar, there is only Fashion Institute Vienna’s annual final show in Hetzendorf Schlosspark. The first bigger show by the
