Welcome to the autumn issue of Family Health Diary for 2015. It’s a bit scary to say the word ‘autumn’; it’s been such a long lovely summer. By now the New Year has found its rhythm and any resolutions will either be truly embedded, or long forgotten. I think it’s not till the nitty gritty of everyday life kicks in post January that any life changes can stick. I must admit I‘ve never been very good at keeping any resolutions! Nevertheless, my annual ambition is to get fitter. At the moment I’m keeping up the weekend walks with a girlfriend, but the calorie burning is usually undone by the coffee, croissant and conversation on the last stretch. I guess we could change our route to avoid the temptation, but then it wouldn’t be half as enjoyable. Anyway, I hope your New Year resolution, if you had one, is still valid a few months down track. On the health front, maybe it’s just being proactive and sorting out the little things before they grow into bigger things – or perhaps thinking about what you eat. I’m determined to try a few different recipes this year so I don’t get stuck on the usual ‘go to’ list in my head. This month there’s a giveaway to get you set up on the smoothie front. Now that’s a nice thought – drinking a long cool smoothie in the warm sun, before it cools down. Enjoy the last of the good weather while you can and catch you next time…

Family Health Diary Autumn 2015
What's happening at familyhealthdiary.co.nz I received a copy of nutrition expert Claire Turnbull’s latest book “FEEL GOOD FOR LIFE” at exactly the right time. Like many, I had over-indulged during the holiday season and was thinking it was time to get back on track. Claire’s book promised to be “the ultimate guide to feeling good and looking fabulous!” Excellent, just what I needed.
FEEL GOOD FOR LIFE is by dietitian, fitness instructor and author Claire Turnbull. The book is on sale now, RRP $30.00 View recipes from the book and more by visiting www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz
FEEL GOOD FOR LIFE is an easy to “pick up and put down” guide – full of useful information, in simple language. There are plenty of opportunities for reader participation, starting with a questionnaire to work out which areas need attention – nutrition, mental health, stress and exercise. There are tasks throughout the book, to keep you on track – for example, a “pee chart” in the hydration section, and useful tips and tricks for adopting healthy habits. The advice in the book makes sense and I felt motivated and enthusiastic reading each chapter. I also loved the scrummy recipes in the back of the book. I’ve given the “Awesome overnight oats” a go…yum! Satisfying and nutritious.

A life without wheezing is possible Coughing? Wheezing? Shortness of breath? Getting real control of asthma is possible… with the right treatment.1 If you live with asthma, do you assume you have to live with the symptoms too? You might also assume all asthma treatments are pretty much the same. If that’s the case, you might be surprised at what’s out there. At your next doctor’s visit, ask about options that will help you manage your asthma better. One option is Seretide® (fluticasone propionate/salmeterol xinafoate), which can actually help prevent symptoms in the first place.2
LEAVING SYMPTOMS BEHIND In a major New Zealand asthma study, 81% of people thought their asthma was well controlled,
yet three-quarters were using their blue reliever at least once daily and the remainder were taking at least 3-4 puffs a day.3 In short, most people overestimated their level of asthma control. The fact is, if you’re using your reliever more than twice a week, chances are your asthma is not as good as it could be.4
GET CONTROL OF ASTHMA Seretide can help you control your asthma, often to the point where the symptoms don’t bother you at all.1 Control means:4 • No coughing or wheezing • No night-time awakenings • No emergency visits to your doctor or hospital • Participating in activities you enjoy and not having to avoid them • Using a blue reliever inhaler less than two times a week and living life more.

HOW SERETIDE WORKS Seretide's dual action formula is so good at treating asthma, it can actually help prevent symptoms in the first place. As a result you could have symptom-free days for most of the year.5
IS SERETIDE RIGHT FOR YOU? Your doctor is the best person to talk to about your asthma control. The most important thing is to let them know what symptoms you’re experiencing and how often you’re having them. Think you've tried it all to combat bloating and wind? At last an all natural product to help keep you regular and assist a healthy digestive system. It can be hard to get to the bottom of digestive complaints, and finding natural support can be hit and miss. Digestive health complaints can be caused by poor diet, lack of exercise, side effects from medicines or pregnancy, just to name a few. If you’ve tried a few ways to ease bloating, wind or irregularity, you may be interested in trying Phloe. Phloe is a natural, gentle daily supplement that has been clinically shown to help keep you regular and avoid digestive discomfort.

Family Health Diary Autumn 2015
HOW PHLOE WORKS Derived from kiwifruit, Phloe has a unique triple action formula. It combines fibre, prebiotics and enzymes to naturally support and optimise bowel health. This combination helps avoid episodes of bloating, flatulence and the ‘feeling of fullness’. The fibre in Phloe works by bulking the stool with moisture, which assists movement through the bowel.
DOCTORS RECOMMEND PHLOE A survey has shown that 65% of doctors see between 6-15 patients a week for gastrointestinal concerns. Digestive health complaints are very common, 91% of doctors in the survey said they would recommend Phloe to their patients.1

The great thing about the enzymes in Phloe is that they work naturally and gently to support movement in the bowel. The prebiotics in Phloe have been shown to support the good bacteria in our digestive systems and help with the natural balance of bacteria in the gut. Having the right balance is one of the keys to maintaining good bowel health and overall wellbeing.

Resolving these symptoms can be the first step to helping you control your depression so you can feel like your old self again.
STAY ON YOUR TREATMENT AS LONG AS PRESCRIBED One of the most important things for you to remember is to take your medication as prescribed, and stay on it for as long as your doctor advises. That’s because it’s not uncommon for depression symptoms to return. If you have found a treatment that works for you, and it’s Efexor-XR, then you don’t have to change. You can stay with what you know, so long as your authority number is up to date.

How to love YOUR life Our top 5 tips to get healthy and feel great
Weight gain? Not enough money in the bank? An empty social calendar? There are many factors which can leave you feeling unmotivated and blue. Thankfully, there are ways to boost your mood, body and mind. HAVE SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO A good way to alleviate feeling stuck in a mundane routine is to plan something to look forward to. This could be a night out, pampering treatment or even a trip away – whatever your budget allows. Having a fun activity lined up will help keep you feeling more positive and motivated to carry on with your everyday tasks – whether it be going to work, looking after little ones or pottering around the house.
12
Family Health Diary Autumn 2015
WHAT’S ON YOUR PLATE? Some high-calorie foods may provide a quick fix when you’re feeling low. But this initial rush will soon wear off, and you may feel worse than before eating it. Instead, stick to whole foods and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
Here are some mood-boosting foods to stock up on: • Wholegrains, nuts, legumes and even our favourite yeasty-spread Marmite are all high in B vitamins. The can help the brain produce serotonin – which is thought to contribute to feelings of well-being. • Oily fish, flaxseed and walnuts are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids – essential to support healthy brain function.
EXERCISE WORKS When you’re feeling tired and uninspired, exercise might be the last thing on your mind. However, physical activity is one of the best ways to get yourself into a better, healthier space. Choose something you enjoy, so you have a better chance of sticking to it. Going for a walk, joining a group fitness class or trying out some relaxing yoga or Tai Chi can do wonders for your body and mind.
LAUGHTER, IT’S THE BEST MEDICINE Want an all-natural, easy and effective mood booster? Try laughter. It releases endorphins to help raise spirits and enhance a feeling of wellbeing. Try to see the funny side, laugh easily, and laugh more often – the results may surprise.
LIVE A LITTLE There’s nothing like stepping out of your comfort zone to shake off those listless feelings. Taking (measured) risks can help get the adrenalin pumping and increase feelings of accomplishment. You don’t need to do something extreme, so if sky-jumping isn’t your thing, you could begin by trying something as simple heading off to a café by yourself. While it’s common to feel down at times, it is important to seek help if these feelings persist. Your GP is a good first port-of-call.

Back and muscle pain slowing you down? Ever hurt your back, and crawled into bed hoping the pain would go away… and it hasn’t? The culprit could be inflammation. WHAT IS INFLAMMATION?
GETTING BACK IN THE GAME
Inflammation is the body’s way of protecting an injury but, if left untreated, it may cause more pain and slow down recovery.
It doesn’t pay to ignore back pain, hoping it will just get better. Although tempting, hiding under the covers and restricting movement is also not the best route to recovery.
When you pull a muscle or tendon, the injury site becomes swollen, red, and more sensitive to touch or pain: a process called inflammation. Voltaren Rapid 25 effectively reduces pain and inflammation. Treating the pain and inflammation of an injury quickly may reduce restriction and discomfort, in order to help get you moving again sooner.
14
Family Health Diary Autumn 2015
It is important to keep moving to help manage back pain. This can include gentle exercise, physical manipulation – such as physiotherapy – and antiinflammatory medication – such as Voltaren Rapid 25 – to help provide temporary relief from acute pain and inflammation.
INJURY RECOVERY TIPS • In the first 48-72 hours following an injury, rest and apply ice packs to the affected area. • If appropriate, compression bandages and elevating the affected limb can also limit bruising and swelling. • After this initial period, it’s important to get moving again, because inactivity can cause stiffness, limit mobility and actually prolong the pain. • Gentle exercise and physical manipulation such as physiotherapy may help you feel better. Using an antiinflammatory treatment such as Voltaren Rapid 25 can also help you keep moving.
HOW DOES VOLTAREN RAPID 25 WORK? Voltaren Rapid 25 has three benefits: 1. it is an anti-inflammatory pain reliever 2. it’s fast acting* 3. and long lasting*
The powerful formula is clinically proven to help reduce pain in as little as 15 minutes. You won’t find Voltaren Rapid 25 on the shelf. This treatment is only available from your pharmacist – who can also give you expert advice on managing pain and inflammation.

"Mum has low blood pressure, but feels safe at home because she has a Bupa medical alarm. Bupa always stays talking to Mum until I arrive, so I know she’s safe. If she feels faint and wants help, she just wants me, not an ambulance. If the situation is more serious, I know Bupa will call an ambulance immediately and let me know. Mum’s safe at home – and doesn’t hesitate to push her alarm button." "Appreciated the fact that you stayed on the line until the ambulance arrived. When I had my fall, I was relieved that you got hold of my friend, and then still kept talking to me right up until help arrived"

RETRAIN YOUR BLADDER These techniques can help you suppress the urgent need to pass urine until an appropriate time and place is found. • When you feel you really need to pass urine, sit down and try to take your mind off wanting to go to the toilet. • Avoid those ‘just in case’ toilet trips – try to go only when your bladder is full and when you need to. • Walk, don’t run, to the toilet. • Minimise your intake of coffee, tea, cola and alcohol. • Do pelvic floor exercises for strengthening and confidence. • Drink six to eight glasses of fluids a day to help avoid constipation (which only makes the problem worse).
WHAT ABOUT LIGHT LEAKAGE? Men, here’s something just for you. If you experience only light to moderate leakage and could do with a shield, instead of a pant, then try these new DEPEND® Guards.
BENEFITS: • Guards fit inside your own underwear • Lock in place with strong adhesive • Leak barriers protect you while active • Worry-free odour control.
