‘Tis the season to conquer heartburn People who say ‘tis the season to be jolly’ clearly don’t get heartburn. For those who do, big Christmas dinners, barbeques and staff parties can be a problem. Everyone likes to indulge a little over Christmas, but for those with recurring heartburn, the good times can turn sour. That burning pain in the chest can cut a great day short and lead into a long and painful night. If heartburn or acid reflux is the last thing you want to worry about over the holidays, there is a simple answer; a treatment that might keep you symptom-free for up to three months. 4
Family Health Diary November/December 2013
GET HELP WITH LOSEC® EXTRA Losec® Extra stops heartburn or reflux at its source, and could free you from heartburn for up to three months. Unlike antacids that only temporarily relieve the symptoms of heartburn/reflux, Losec® Extra regulates the amount of acid your stomach produces, so that symptoms don’t have the chance to rear their head at all.
GETTING TO THE SOURCE OF HEARTBURN Heartburn and acid reflux occurs when acid from the stomach flows up into the food pipe (oesophagus), causing a burning pain in the chest. Too much stomach acid is usually to blame, and so to tackle the problem effectively you may need to limit the amount of acid your stomach produces in the first place. That’s exactly what Losec® Extra does. Consequently it’s been shown to be twice as effective as antacids in the relief of heartburn and reflux.
GET LASTING RELIEF One tablet of Losec® Extra (omeprazole 20mg) provides 24-hour relief from heartburn. Taken for two weeks, Losec® Extra may keep you symptom-free for up to three months. Losec® Extra is available from your pharmacy – without prescription – making it easier to get lasting freedom from the nagging pain.
COMMON DIETARY TRIGGERS Heartburn can be triggered by: • Spicy or fatty food

Juggling multiple medicines? Having more than one long-term medical condition is hard in itself – even without having to remember all your medicines. Different medicines, different dosages, different times – it can be easy to miss taking your medicine. If this sounds like you, then you might welcome the guidance of an expert to help you keep on top of it. The Community Pharmacy Long Term Conditions (LTC) Service helps people with multiple medical conditions who often miss taking their medications. It’s different from other medicine management systems. With the LTC Service, you’ll have a skilled pharmacist working with you oneon-one to create a plan that will help 4
Family Health Diary September/October 2013
you with your medicines. You’ll be encouraged to use the same pharmacy for all your medication, so that your pharmacist has the full picture of what you’re taking and knows if there are any changes to your medicine. More than 133,000 Kiwis have already registered for this free service.
Working together If you have long-term conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure then you'll know there are a number of things you need to do to take care of yourself. If you are registered with the LTC Service, your pharmacist will work with you to identify why some medication is being missed and how you can manage this. The service is tailored for each individual and how your pharmacist helps will depend on what’s useful for you and may include:
Wh o is eligible ? You ma y be eligible if you have tions mu ltiple long-term medical con di s as ine and are not taking you r medic often as you should be. A pha rmacist will use a sta ndard set of criteria to assess whether you qua lify for the service.
• Providing you with educational material and reminders • ‘Lining up’ your medicines so they run out at the same time • Issuing you a card listing all your treatments and explaining their purpose • Getting you to return unused and old containers, if having too much medicine at home is confusing. That way you know all your medicines are current.
If you are having trouble remembering to take all your medicines, talk to your pharmacist. They will look at ways to help you, including letting you know if you are eligible for the LTC Service.

Beach safety: your emergency response Kiwis spend a lot of time in and around water, making the most of our island nation. But water can also be a setting for tragedy, so it’s no wonder we’ve had a love and fear relationship since the time of the early settlers. Back in the days before bridges were built over rivers, drowning was so common that it was called the ‘New Zealand death’. The label may no longer exist, but drowning is still a major problem. This month Family Health Diary looks at water safety and what we can do to help ourselves, and those around us. For the full article, visit www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz, but to know what to do if trouble strikes, here's a short summary of the emergency basics.
SPOTTING TROUBLE - WHAT TO DO If you see someone either struggling or not moving much in the water, then if it's a surf lifesaver patrolled beach, always call for a lifeguard first as they have training and rescue equipment. If not patrolled, call 111. If you are considering jumping in to rescue someone, know your limits and safe ways of rescuing so you don’t put yourself in danger. Once ashore, if the person is unconscious, perform CPR.
caught in a rip? do not panic! A rip is a strong current of water running out to sea. Rip currents are a major surf zone hazard, but not easy to recognise. At www.watersafety.org.nz they say: • Paddle and swim parallel to the shore toward the breaking waves, which should help you get back to the beach • Do not attempt to swim against the rip, as even the strongest swimmers will quickly become tired • If you do tire or become frightened, stay calm, raise your arm, call for help and wait for assistance. 8

How to save a life with CPR: CPR saves lives by causing blood to flow to the heart and brain when the person is: • Unconscious and not responding • Not breathing normally • Not moving
Adult CPR: Dangers: Start with a check of whether there is any danger. Response: If safe, say: “Can you hear me?” If no response, the person is unconscious. Send for help. Dial 111 and ask for an ambulance. If you have a mobile, keep it with you. Remember that you can keep the person alive with CPR, but they need additional care to start their heart. Airway: At this point you take physical action, tilting the head back and lifting the chin. Breathing. Look for normal breathing.
Commence CPR and Defibrillation. If no normal breathing, place your hands in the centre of the chest. Push down hard 30 times, then give two breaths in the mouth. Attach AED (defibrillator) if available. Continue cycle of 30 compressions and 2 breaths in the mouth until ambulance arrives. Note: See the St John website for child and baby resuscitation – it’s different.

Not all sunscreens are created equal Applying a good smathering of sunscreen before you head out in the sun is a healthy habit to get into. But for greater peace of mind, why not use the maximum protection you can get? With low ozone over New Zealand and high levels of UV rays, Kiwis are vulnerable to sunburn. You can burn in just minutes which can leave you blistering and sore, and there can be long-term damage caused to the skin. Protecting yourself starts with using a sunscreen that offers good protection. The highest approved SPF rating in New Zealand is now 50+*, which means that 98% of the sun’s damaging UVB rays are blocked, and if it’s ‘broad spectrum’ there is protection from UVA rays too.
The Cancer Society’s new SPF 50+ range The Cancer Society has just released a range of SPF50+ sunscreens that give strong protection against sunburn. Every bottle sold helps fund the society’s vital community work. 10
Family Health Diary September/October 2013
The SPF50+ Everyday Range meets the maximum protection standards endorsed by the Australia/New Zealand Sunscreen Standard. Suitable for the whole family, the range comes in a variety of dermatologically approved lotions and spray formats. Containing moisturising aloe vera and vitamin E, the sunscreens all have UVA/ UVB broad spectrum protection, are dry touch, paraben-free and offer four hours water resistance.
Be SunSmart Along with applying sunscreen, it is important to follow through on the other SunSmart guidelines recommended by the Cancer Society. Between the hours of 10am-4pm when UV radiation levels are high, everyone should:
Slip on some sun-protective clothing and get into the shade. Slop on sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two hours especially if you are swimming or exercising.
Support the Cancer Society The Cancer Society receives no government funding, so all work, including research and community support, comes from funds raised by volunteers and a percentage of each Cancer Society Sunscreen sold.
Slap on a hat with a wide brim or a cap with flaps. Finally, wrap on some sunglasses that meet the Australian/New Zealand Sunglass Standard.
Did you know? Most people don’t apply enough sunscreen. You need approximately one teaspoon for each limb (about seven teaspoons for the whole body).

Is your body ready for summer fun? Nothing beats long summer days for getting outside and moving again. Be careful though – if you push your body too hard, too fast, you could get injured. Preparation is key to staying injury-free. The good news is that there are ways to limit the prospect of injury while enjoying your favourite summer activities. Following are some great ways to care for that precious vessel of yours, so you can have all the fun you want.
Cardio workouts Cardio exercise is any activity that raises your heart rate, which in turn builds endurance and makes your heart strong. You should aim for 20 minutes of continued elevated pulse to get the best results, at least three times a week. If you can’t finish a sentence while doing a workout, you are going too hard. And remember, if you haven’t exercised in a while, consult your doctor for a health check before starting a new programme.
12
Family Health Diary September/October 2013
Warming up and warming down Warming up before exercise helps get your body ready by increasing blood flow and muscle temperature. You could do this by lightly jogging or by stretching the muscles you are likely to use. You then repeat this at the end to gradually reduce heart rate and to push lactic acid and other unwanted substances out of the muscles.
Uh-oh you got injured, what now? If you get a sprain or strain, follow the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) for the first 48 hours. Then, before you can safely return to your sport, it is essential to regain strength, mobility, balance and co-ordination.

Update your approval for Efexor-XR It’s great when you find relief from major depression. So if Efexor-XR is working for you and your doctor feels you should continue treatment, you can stay on it. Just ask your doctor to update your authority number… Read on for details. If you’d like to stay with Efexor-XR and not be given another brand, it’s really important you ask your doctor to check the authority number on your script. It’s a number that appears at the bottom of your script, and you’ll want to be sure it’s not out of date.
14
Family Health Diary November/December 2013
You see, it’s this number that enables you to receive the EfexorXR capsules you’re used to, and not a tablet alternative.
Fully funded With an up-to-date authority number, Efexor-XR is fully funded, so there is no extra charge other than your usual doctor’s and pharmacy fee. You just need to let your doctor know that you want to stay with Efexor-XR, and ask your pharmacist for Efexor-XR by name.
More about Efexor-XR Efexor-XR is used in the treatment and prevention of relapse of depression and is also prescribed for a range of mood disorders including generalised anxiety, social anxiety and panic disorders. Efexor-XR’s dual-action approach to depression may help resolve a broad range of depression symptoms like constant sadness, trouble sleeping or low energy. Resolving these symptoms can be the first step to helping you control your depression so you can feel like your old self again.
Stay on your treatment as long as prescribed One of the most important things for you to remember is to take your medication as prescribed, and stay on it for as long as your doctor advises. That’s because it’s not uncommon for depression symptoms to return. If you have found a treatment that works for you, and it’s Efexor-XR, then you don’t have to change. You can stay
with what you know, so long as your authority number is up to date.

Manuka Honey – helping balance good & bad bacteria Manuka Honey is the pick of honeys when it comes to supporting overall health. But did you know it can actually promote bacterial balance in the gut, and mouth and throat? And now, it can do that job even better. In the digestive tract and gut, bacteria can help break down food and maintain healthy digestion. In the mouth, bacteria helps fight disease-producing germs that try to come in through the mouth. However, not all bacteria are so helpful, and when there is an imbalance, this can cause health issues and a degree of discomfort. It’s a time when our bodies could use a little support.

bacteria in the mouth and throat. Honey can also help settle the gut and stomach so that you feel more comfortable.
Introducing MGO® 400+ Manuka Honey with CycloPower™ MGO® 400+ Manuka Honey with CycloPower™ is a supplement designed for optimum digestive and oral/throat health. The addition of newly-developed CycloPower™ acts as a booster that helps Manuka Honey work even better inside the body.
The CycloPower™ difference CycloPower™ is a natural compound that boosts the special properties of MGO® Manuka Honey in supporting the body’s healing function. It has been found to be 10 times more potent than MGO® Manuka Honey of the same strength, in supporting good bacterial balance.* Many factors can limit the activity of natural bioactives such as MGO® Manuka Honey, but CycloPower™ protects bioactives during their
journey through the digestive tract, and only gradually releases them. In the lower gut it has a prebiotic balancing effect that aids healthy digestion. The longer release means the Glycaemic Index of Manuka Honey is significantly lowered, so that people managing their blood sugar levels can also enjoy the benefits of this product.

The next step in joint health Stiff, tired joints are a sign of what’s going on inside the body – the result of a gradual loss in the cartilage that keeps joints cushioned and supple. Now there’s a new way to counter all this, and help build up your joint strength and mobility. Cartilage is a really important element of healthy joints, acting as a protective shock absorber between joints. The cartilage itself is made up of several compounds that the body produces naturally. But with age or significant wear and tear, the body’s ability to produce these substances can decline and cartilage starts to wear away. One of the key substances in cartilage is Hyaluronic Acid, and now there’s a way to compensate for its wear and tear with a new, advanced joint formula that stands apart from the field. 18
Family Health Diary November/December 2013
NEW Nutra-Life Joint Care UltraMoveTM Joint Care UltraMoveTM is a special development from Nutra-Life, the leader in natural joint health in New Zealand*. Unlike other joint formulas, UltraMoveTM contains Hyaluronic Acid, New Zealand sourced Marine Collagen, and a high potency Glucosamine for joint elasticity. It’s a powerful combination that is the first of its kind in New Zealand.
The importance of Hyaluronic Acid Hyaluronic Acid is found in joint fluid, which acts as a lubricant between
joints allowing them to pass freely over one another without friction. The acid also forms the backbone of proteoglycans – the building blocks of cartilage.
for cartilage and bones, which helps with joint strength and elasticity. Some collagen in the market is derived from chicken. Nutra-Life uses New Zealand-sourced Marine Collagen.
Reduced levels of Hyaluronic Acid, often age-related, cause cartilage to be undernourished with less cushioning and reduced lubrication.
Glucosamine – cornerstone of joint health
Why Marine Collagen? Many of us know Collagen is often used in beauty products. That’s because it is a protein-rich compound needed by the body to produce hair, skin and nails. Collagen is however also a part of our bones, joints, tendons and ligaments, supporting joint structure and function. It provides structural support
NEW
Glucosamine is also produced naturally in the body where it helps maintain the elasticity and integrity of the connective tissue. Glucosamine is essential in the formation and repair of cartilage, but its production slows down with age. Nutra-Life Joint Care UltraMoveTM contains scientifically-researched Glucosamine Sulfate at the level recommended in international clinical guidelines.

A gluten-free start that’s tasty-plus If you think gluten-free means you have to sacrifice great taste – think again. Kiwi company Hubbards makes no compromises on taste with its Thank Goodness Gluten Free cereal range. It's just as delicious as it is good. Research indicates that approximately 10% of New Zealand’s population may have a gluten sensitivity, which means they need to avoid foods that contain wheat, barley, oats, and rye. Gluten is a form of protein in these grains.
Hubbards – a popular choice Hubbards Thank Goodness Gluten Free cereals are the number one breakfast cereal range of their kind in the country.
For those with Coeliac disease, the lining of the intestine can be damaged, so a controlled diet is particularly important.
This iconic local company stands behind the quality of its products, and as well as ticking all the boxes for gluten-free, these cereals taste great too.
However, you don’t have to be gluten-intolerant to enjoy glutenfree offerings. Lots of people like the digestive health benefits of gluten-free foods irrespective of dietary restrictions.
The range consists of different types of muesli, porridge and family cereals. There are nine breakfasts to choose from, including three new additions – yummy Apricot & Apple Muesli, Maple Brown Rice Porridge and Rice Pops.

Holiday foods…
A good 'old fave' just got better When it comes to wickedly delicious foods, there’s often that voice at the back of your head saying ‘this can’t be good for me’. Salami normally falls into that category… but thanks to one Kiwi smokehouse you can now enjoy this culinary pleasure without the guilt.
