crosstrainer

Well I have to confess the winter months have arrived. I’ve finally given up pretending it’s autumn. I’ve put the electric blanket on at night and started making winter casseroles and puddings, so I’ve well and truly embraced the cooler months. For now, our household has bypassed the usual coughs and colds that plague most of us mid-year… but it’s only a matter of time I suspect. Lots of helpful information in this issue of Family Health Diary about boosting your immune system to help ward off the lurgy. And if it does get you, we have advice on dealing with it. July is Glaucoma Awareness Month. Glaucoma is the number one preventable cause of blindness in New Zealand. Early detection and appropriate treatment can halt glaucoma, so a very good reason to read up on it. Turn to page 8 to find out more. See you again next issue, when the Rugby World Cup is all about to start! Let’s hope our men in black stay super healthy in the next couple of months… Till next time, stay warm, well and dry.

Erection difficulties?

Along with an optimal erection, many men using this treatment report an increase in sexual confidence, self-esteem and sexual relations satisfaction.

Erectile Dysfunction is a cause of embarrassment for millions of men the world over. It is estimated that 39% of men over the age of 40 sometimes experience difficulty with erections.

While the occasional difficulty with erection is common in men from their mid-forties onwards, persistent difficulty should never be ignored.

Now there’s an affordable choice

Never ignore erection problems

It is known that a combination of stress and fatigue can result in bedroom difficulties. When those difficulties persist, it’s time to see your doctor for a thorough check-up. The health of your erection can be an early warning sign of a range of more serious conditions including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Optimal erections The active ingredient in Avigra has helped more than 37 million men in 120 countries reclaim their sex lives by improving the hardness of their erection. The quality of an erection is rated

on a 1–4 scale, with 4 being an optimal, completely hard and fully rigid erection. Looking at the scale below, if you find yourself at a 1 or 2, you might want to take this magazine to your next doctor’s visit and discuss your options.

Ask your doctor if Avigra can help you even more to smile about, with the added benefit of substantially reduced cost. Until now, the cost of treatment has prevented some men from receiving the help they needed. By making treatment much more affordable, this means more men may once again know the joys of an active and rewarding sex life.

Tested and proven Studies show that Avigra, with its active ingredient sildenafil citrate, produces grade 4 erections (see scale on the next page), in 58% of users.

And request it at your pharmacy AVIGRA (sildenafil citrate) is an unfunded prescription medicine for use by men in the treatment of erection problems resulting in a natural response to sexual stimulation. You will need to pay for this medicine and normal doctor’s fees apply. Do not use Avigra if you: are being treated for angina (chest pain) or other heart conditions with medicines called nitrates; are using amyl nitrite; have heart or blood vessel problems that make sexual intercourse inadvisable; have suffered a heart attack or stroke in the last 6 months; have severe liver problems; have unusually high or low blood pressure that is not effectively treated; have loss of vision in one or both eyes from an eye disease called non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION); have an eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa; have an allergy to AVIGRA or similar medications. Side effects include headache, dizziness, flushing, indigestion, nasal congestion, temporary changes in vision, diarrhoea, urinary tract infection or rash. If symptoms continue or you have side effects, see your doctor. Don't let your

bladder be BOSS Bladder control is taken for granted by most people. But for some, bladder weakness means their bladder becomes the boss, affecting their activities and enjoyment of life. The good news is it doesn’t have to be that way.

Regardless of the cause, and the degree of weakness, you just want to manage your bossy bladder so you can continue living your life, participating in activities you enjoy and getting out and about as normal. Pelvic floor exercises and bladder training programmes can help strengthen the muscles in the pelvic area so you can hold on longer between toilet visits. The key in managing the problem comes from the right protection, whether the weakness results in a few light drops when sneezing or coughing, or a more significant loss requiring a change of underwear or clothes.

SPECIFIC PRODUCTS FOR WOMEN AND MEN Because women and men are not the same, DEPEND® gender-specific underwear is designed to fit the female

and male body, to offer targeted protection where it is needed most. DEPEND® is the only gender-specific sanitary underwear in New Zealand. It comes in different sizes and different absorbencies depending on your needs, and now there’s a new large size for men.

or more than 600,000 New Zealanders, both women and men, bladder or bowel control problems are a fact of life. They can occur as a result of an underlying medical condition or physical changes to the body. Although bladder and bowel weakness is more common in the elderly, it can affect anyone at any age. It’s important to remember bladder and bowel control problems are symptoms, not diseases. They can often be cured and almost always successfully managed.

Glaucoma...

the silent sight thief If you had a choice between losing your sight, and preserving good eyesight, which would you choose?

In early glaucoma, there are no symptoms. In advanced glaucoma you lose the ability to see objects or people in your peripheral (side) vision, which may cause you to bump into things. Also, if you lose a certain amount of peripheral vision then you may no longer meet the visual requirements for driving.

How is glaucoma diagnosed? Eye care specialists detect glaucoma by measuring the internal pressure of your eye, as well as measuring your peripheral vision and observing the health of your optic nerve.

How is glaucoma treated? There is no cure for glaucoma, but modern treatments, like special eye drops used daily, can halt its progression and preserve the sight you have left.

July is Glaucoma Awareness Month

W

hen it comes to glaucoma, the silent sight thief, you do have a choice. Regular eye examinations can detect glaucoma early and if treated quickly, you can prevent progression of glaucoma and preserve your eyesight.

What is glaucoma? Glaucoma is an eye disease that causes damage to the optic nerve, which carries signals from the eye to the brain. If left untreated it can lead to blindness. Currently 8

www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

approximately 68,000 New Zealanders over the age of 40 have glaucoma. Glaucoma occurs when eye pressure builds up so that there is damage to the optic nerve, the nerve of sight. In an eye without glaucoma the eye pressure is at a level that does not damage the optic nerve. However, if there is resistance to drainage of the fluid inside the eye, the pressure rises. This leads to stress and strain on the optic nerve, which destroys the nerve cells responsible for vision. This damage is irreversible.

There’s an easy way to prevent glaucoma robbing you of your eyesight. Follow the simple 45 plus 5 rule – a glaucoma eye examination every 5 years from the age of 45 – and encourage friends and relatives to do the same. From the age of 60, you should have a glaucoma eye examination every 3 years. However, at any age, if you notice changes in your eyesight you should have your eyes examined at that time. For example, if you need hobby glasses, it is a good idea to have your eyes checked in case there is a problem.

Who is most at risk? Although anyone can get glaucoma, you are at higher risk if you fall into any of the following categories: • Aged 60 and over • Family history of glaucoma • Short sighted • High blood pressure • Previous eye injury.

Key facts about glaucoma • Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness – it currently affects approximately 65 million people worldwide. • There is no cure for glaucoma, however, early detection could save your sight. • The damage to the optic nerve from glaucoma is irreversible. • Everyone is at risk, but age and family history increase the risk. • Half of those with glaucoma have no symptoms and don’t know they have it.

Preserving your vision is easy…have a regular eye examination. For more information or a free educational pamphlet

or the All Blacks, the elite of international rugby, that’s especially true. Injury can strike any time, whether it’s at training, at a game, or even lifting a bag onto the team bus. And if you’re an All Black you don’t want to be on the sideline.

10

www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

So how do the All Blacks deal with injury? For a start they take a proactive approach – early treatment is the key. If you delay treating the pain, the injury can linger, slowing your recovery. The All Blacks use Voltaren®, a treatment clinically proven to relieve both pain and inflammation.

All Blacks scrum coach Mike Cron says the right treatment can be the difference between getting back in the game, and sitting on the sideline. “Whether it’s Voltaren® Emulgel medicated rub or Voltaren® Rapid 25 tablets, sorting out both pain and inflammation is crucial. “That’s why the All Blacks choose Voltaren®,” Cron says.

Voltaren® targets pain and inflammation Voltaren® products contain the antiinflammatory ingredient diclofenac, which helps relieve both pain and inflammation. Voltaren® Emulgel is a specialist, medicated rub for muscle and joint pain. It works to relieve soft tissue pain and inflammation, targeting the source of pain and concentrating its action where you need it most. It’s easy to rub in and readily absorbed to help soothe aching muscles.

Voltaren® Rapid 25 tablets contain the same anti-inflammatory ingredient. They work fast, in as little as 15 minutes1, with the effect lasting up to 8 hours. Remember you don’t need to be an All Black to get injured. Acute injuries can happen when muscles or tendons are stretched too far or exposed to more weight or force than they can take. Even a sudden twist or awkward movement can damage ligaments, resulting in pain and inflammation. If you follow the All Blacks’ strategy to treat pain and inflammation quickly, you can get back to your everyday activities sooner.

Available at pharmacies. Voltaren® Emulgel also available at supermarkets

Voltaren Supplier of Pain Relief to the 1. When taken as an initial dose of 2 x 25mg tablets. Always read the label and use only as directed. Medicines have benefits and some may have risks. Consult your pharmacist if you require further information, if symptoms persist or if you have side effects. Voltaren® Emulgel (diclofenac diethylammonium 1.16%) for short-term relief of local pain and inflammation. Voltaren® Rapid 25 tablets (diclofenac potassium 25mg) for short term relief of acute, painful inflammatory conditions [Pharmacist Only Medicine]. Your pharmacist’s advice is required.

Is your asthma well controlled? If you’re on an orange preventer inhaler, but still find yourself wheezing, coughing or reaching for your blue inhaler in the night, chances are your asthma is not as good as it could be.

means you don’t have to live with the wheezing, coughing and sleepless nights in the first place.2,3

Is Seretide right for you? Your doctor is the best person to talk to about your asthma control. The most important thing is to let them know what symptoms you’re experiencing and how often you’re having them. You may not realise you can have symptom-free days for most days of the year with Seretide, the purple inhaler.4 If you’re an asthma sufferer don’t assume that exercise or running around with the kids goes hand-in-hand with laboured breathing, turning ‘enjoyable’ activities into strenuous chores. Asthma treatment has come a long way, and there’s every chance you can put all these symptoms behind you.

Is your asthma under control?

Most people overestimate their asthma control In a major New Zealand asthma study, 81% of people thought their asthma was well controlled, yet three-quarters were using their reliever at least once daily and the remainder were taking at least 3-4 puffs a day. So if there’s one thing the study showed, it’s that most people overestimate their level of asthma control.1 14

If this sounds like you, a move to Seretide®, the purple inhaler, could be the answer.

How Seretide can help Seretide is a two-in-one inhaler that combines the active ingredient in the orange preventer inhaler with the active ingredient in the green symptom controller. This combined approach helps control asthma long-term, which

Ask your doctor about Seretide – the purple inhaler

The first step to freeing yourself of symptoms is understanding how well controlled your asthma is right now. Control means… • No coughing or wheezing • No night-time interruptions • No emergency visits to your doctor or hospital • Participating in activities you enjoy and not having to avoid them • Using a reliever less than two times a week and living life more.5 There is a simple test to help you find out if your asthma really is under control – visit www.asthmacontrol.co.nz and answer the online questionnaire.

Round-the-clock

Vitamin C

We all know the benefits of Vitamin C, but getting enough of it isn’t the only challenge – keeping it in our bodies is the real issue.

As humans, we can’t manufacture Vitamin C within our bodies, so we have to get it from the foods we eat instead. Fruits and vegetables are the best source of Vitamin C, but even with a good diet or the help of a supplement, it’s tricky to get round-the-clock Vitamin C support. Vitamin C breaks down quickly in the body and is flushed out fast, so often after just a few hours, all that Vitamin C is gone!

The Ester-C® difference Nutra-Life Ester-C is a Vitamin C supplement with an important difference. It is the only Vitamin C that has undergone a patented water-based process so it’s absorbed twice as fast as regular Vitamin C, and stays in the body for a full 24 hours. So while normal Vitamin C has faded away, Ester-C is still there, providing immune support all day long.

Better than standard Vitamin C

Ester-C benefits • Supports a strong immune system • Provides full 24-hour support • Absorbed twice as fast as normal Vitamin C • Non-acidic and gentle on teeth and the stomach • Powerful antioxidant properties.

Tablets, chewables or powder Ester-C is available in 1000mg+ bioflavonoid tablets, in powder form, or as Ester-C and Ester-C + Echinacea Chewables. Echinacea is a time-tested herb, which like Vitamin C also helps maintain a healthy immune system.

Available from health food stores and pharmacies Contact the Naturopathic Advice Line on 0800 268 872 or visit www.nutralife.co.nz

As well as offering 24-hour support, Ester-C is easier on the stomach. Ordinary Vitamin C is acidic, potentially causing stomach discomfort in people sensitive to stomach acid. The water-based process used to make Ester-C helps reduce the acidity, making it gentler on the stomach than ordinary Vitamin C.

The common cold is a viral infection of the nose, throat and nasal sinuses characterised by inflammation, discharge and nasal congestion. Symptoms to look for include a sore throat, runny nose, post-nasal drip, watery eyes, nasal stuffiness and a cough. A child with a cold may have a slight fever, but fever with a cold is unusual in adults.1 The flu is a viral infection of the air passages and lungs, caused by a different set of viruses to a cold. In addition to symptoms of a cold, a person suffering from the flu will also have muscular aches and pains, followed by a sudden onset of chills and fever developing over a 24-hour period. A severe headache is common, followed by a sore throat, a dry cough, sore or inflamed eyes and a general feeling of listlessness. Nausea and vomiting may occur in children.1

Best known for its proven and trusted range of children’s formulas, Dimetapp can provide fast and effective relief for adults too, making it the one-stop solution for the family’s cough, cold and flu needs.

Nausea and vomiting may occur in children.1

type of cough, from dry coughs to chesty coughs, and everything in between.

Why do we cough? The cough reflux is the respiratory tract’s first line of defence – the body’s way of clearing your lungs of foreign material and irritants. A cough can be the result of a cold or flu or other ongoing conditions like asthma, allergy or chronic bronchitis. It can also be caused by irritants such as cigarette smoke, air pollution, perfumes or scented air fresheners. If it lasts for weeks, a cough can take its toll, interfering with sleep and work, causing tiredness and chest pain.

Types of cough There are three common types of cough: • Dry cough, also known as an ‘unproductive’ cough, because there is no phlegm or mucus to cough up • In-between cough, medically termed a ‘congested unproductive’ cough • Chesty cough also known as a ‘productive’ cough, because phlegm is coughed up.

NATURE’S HELPERS Glucosamine and chondroitin are important components of cartilage, critical to joint comfort, flexibility and recovery. Chondroitin provides structure and resilience, while glucosamine supports tendon and ligament health. But these naturally-occurring nutrients decrease with age. Taking a health supplement with chondroitin and glucosamine can help improve the health of joints affected by lower levels of these natural nutrients, so we can return to the activities we enjoy.

HEALTHERIES JOINTEX PLUS Because keeping active is important to overall health, many people make it a priority to ensure that their joints are flexible and supple. A highly potent formulation developed by Healtheries helps fight falling glucosamine and chondroitin levels.

KEY INGREDIENTS IN JOINTEX PLUS

On the move Healthy joints are essential to keeping us on the move and taking part in all sorts of fun, so we can feel good physically and emotionally. But it’s easy to take them for granted until, of course, trouble strikes.

Jointex Plus is a high-strength blend of glucosamine and chondroitin, which uniquely contains the ancient Indian herb boswellia. Boswellia has traditionally been used to support joint function and flexibility. These three key ingredients help with joint flexibility and assist in rebuilding cartilage. Jointex Plus helps tackle troublesome joints so we can keep on doing the things we love.

J

oints play an important role in our bodies, but we may not realise just how crucial they are until our movement becomes restricted. The bones of weight-bearing joints have a cushion of cartilage that gradually wears away over time, and must be replaced. This normal wear and tear can cause stiffness and discomfort. In the worst cases, the bones may rub against each other.

Glucosamine This natural substance supports tendon, ligament and cartilage health. Chondroitin Provides structure and resilience in cartilage, and helps hold water and nutrients in the joints. Boswellia Aids joint comfort and function.

Supplementary to and not a replacement for a balanced diet. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your healthcare professional. Phone toll-free 0508 508 100 or visit www.healtheries.co.nz for more information. TAPS CH2931

Are you SAFE

with your medicines? In homes around New Zealand, unused medicines lie in waiting just in case we might need them one day. We often forget what they were prescribed for, and never check expiry dates. Is this safe use of medicines? In this special Family Health Diary report we unravel the facts on safe use of medicines.

S

afety is all around us – we wear seatbelts in our cars, we use mouth guards on the sports field, we encourage safe sex, and we install child safety gates on the stairs. But do we apply the same safety logic when it comes to medicines? Medicine safety involves many things – using your medicines the right way, storing your medicines correctly, keeping medicines out of reach of children, and safely disposing of unwanted medicines.

Using your medicines Here are some guidelines on using your medicines • Always follow instructions on the label. If unsure how to take your medicine, talk to your pharmacist. • Labels may also give special instructions such as take with food, or on an empty stomach, or avoid alcohol. 26

www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

Storing your medicines Store medicines in their original containers with their original labels in a dry, cool place. Some medicines must be stored in a fridge and this will be stated on the label. Ensure they are stored at the back of the fridge, out of sight of children. Some medicines will have a use by or a discard after date and should not be used after these dates.

Never share medicines Prescribed medicines should never be shared – they should only be taken by the person they were prescribed for. Some people may have medical conditions, or take other medicines, that make your medicines unsuitable for them.

Disposing of unwanted medicines

Medicine safety with children

• Some medicines may make you sleepy. When taking these medicines avoid situations such as driving a car or operating machinery. • Some medicines may be labelled swallow whole which means they should not be chewed or crushed. • Some medicines can interact with other medicines so tell your doctor or pharmacist about other medicines you are taking including supplements purchased from a pharmacy, supermarket or health shop. • Some medicines can also interact with food. Your doctor or pharmacist will tell you which foods to avoid. • Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are pregnant, become pregnant while on medication or are breastfeeding, so that a medicine is not prescribed that could harm the baby.

Almost 400 New Zealand children are admitted to hospital each year as a result of unintentional poisoning. The most common culprits are medicines, especially liquid paracetamol. All medicines should be stored out of reach, and sight, of children, preferably in a locked cupboard. Your pharmacy can provide medicines with child-resistant caps, but these are not child-proof, and care is still needed. If children are visiting other people’s homes, always check where their medicines are stored.

Double dosing common Some medicines contain more than one ingredient, especially cough, cold and flu preparations. Always check the ingredient list when purchasing medicines to ensure you don’t inadvertently double dose. The

Most of us have unused, and half-used medicines at home just in case we may need them in the future. Old medicines may no longer be effective, and chances are you don’t remember what they were prescribed for, and why. Unused medicines, or medicines past their expiry date, should be returned to your pharmacy for safe disposal. Don’t throw medicines out with the rubbish as they could easily fall into the wrong hands. Likewise medicines should never be flushed down the toilet or sink as trace elements of medicines have been detected in waterways around the world. Studies in the US and Italy have revealed traces of contraceptive drugs in waterways that can cause sterility in frogs. There is also evidence that the presence of antibiotics in waterways has an impact on the bacteria present and may lead to antibiotic resistance. most common double dosing situation involves paracetamol. You can easily double dose on paracetamol if your cold and flu remedy contains paracetamol, and you then take paracetamol separately for your headaches and muscle aches and pains.

BETTER MEDICINE MANAGEMENT

It’s easy to get

right medicine, right dose, right time... If you’re on multiple medications, it can be difficult keeping track of what to take and when. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to avoid confusion and reduce the chance of error.

If you’re worried about your medicine management, there’s a simple and convenient way to lighten the load. It’s called the Medico Pak. The Medico Pak arranges all your daily medicines into pre-packed, ready-to-take doses. Each dose is clearly marked with the day and time it should be taken, which means there’s less chance of mixing your ‘breakfast’ medicines with your ‘lunchtime’ medicines.

LET YOUR PHARMACIST DO THE WORK The Medico Pak is packed by your pharmacist, which means the hassle of organising your daily doses is taken off your hands. A small charge may apply for this service. You’ll no longer have to sort through several medicine bottles to take your daily medication. With the Medico Pak, all the right pills and capsules are already sealed into handy tear-off doses.

WHO MIGHT NEED A MEDICO PAK? • People on multiple medications • People on holiday or with busy lifestyles • Nurses and caregivers who need a system they can trust • People on difficult regimes or those tapering off their medicines • Children and adolescents • Those with multiple caregivers • People with long-term chronic conditions.

Pregnant?

Folic acid for every stage

You need more iodine You and your baby need a number of extra nutrients in pregnancy and one you may not be aware of is iodine.

Healthy cells depend on the continued and proper replication of our DNA, and folate (folic acid) plays an important role in that process.4 In pregnancy however, as your baby grows, the rate of folate breakdown in your body increases, and peaks in the third trimester. So you need to ensure your folate needs are met throughout your pregnancy.4

Other essential vitamins The graph shows the significant nutrient increases required in pregnancy recommended by the Ministry of Health and WHO (the pink part of the graph) with folic acid showing the greatest increase, followed by iodine. Recommended Daily Nutrient Intake

Elevit with Iodine meets Ministry of Health recommendations Elevit with Iodine pregnancy supplement delivers the essential nutrients both you and your baby will need, meeting the Ministry of Health’s recommended standards.1 Elevit contains 800mcg of folic acid and is the only pregnancy supplement clinically proven to reduce the risk of neural tube defects by 92%.3 Elevit with Iodine also contains 60mg of iron to help combat fatigue and prevent dietary iron deficiency, and 250mcg of iodine to assist with healthy brain development. It also contains zinc, vitamin C, calcium, B6, B12 and other essential nutrients – all in a once-daily tablet.

Look for a cleanser that helps restore the skin’s barrier function. And choose one that is pH balanced (around 7.0) to complement the acidic pH of the skin, which is 5.5 to 6.0. A pH higher than 7.5 could actually disrupt the ‘acid mantle’.

Follow dermatologist recommendations Not all moisturisers are the same, so choose dermatologist-recommended products, which are usually both gentle and hydrating. Cetaphil is one of the most highly researched and recommended skincare ranges with products that are hypoallergenic and fragrance-free. skin and maintain healthy skin, can be a mission. But it doesn’t have to be.

What to look for Start by checking ingredients – products that are fragrance-free, soap-free, non-irritating, and non-comedogenic (ie. won’t block the pores).

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser is just that – gentle. In a 21-day Cumulative Irritancy Study,* it was found to be the least irritating cleanser when compared to other leading brands. Unlike many other cleansers, Cetaphil is designed to cleanse, moisturise and restore your skin’s pH balance. It gets rid of the nasties leaving behind the goodies – your skin’s protective natural softeners. New Cetaphil Daily Advance Ultra Hydrating Lotion is designed to moisturise and restore dry, sensitive skin. With its Epidermal Replenishing Complex (ERC5) – a unique combination of five moisturising ingredients – it is clinically shown to hydrate, restore healthy skin function and protect against moisture loss, for a full 24 hours after a single application.*

Cetaphil is suitable for all skin types including dry, sensitive skin and infant skin.

Once you do quit smoking, the 1mg twice a day maintenance dose of Champix continues to help insulate you from cravings. As nicotine withdrawal typically lasts 10 weeks or more, it’s important to stay on Champix for the full 12-week course. It will help as you combat common triggers to smoke, such as friends who smoke, social events with other smokers and daily routines that are associated with smoking.

How Champix works 1. When you smoke, nicotine binds to receptors in the brain, which triggers the release of a feel-good chemical called dopamine. As nicotine levels drop after a cigarette is smoked, craving and withdrawal symptoms occur, prompting you to have another cigarette.

If you’re ready to stop smoking, ask your doctor about Champix. You may be eligible to have the entire 12-week course funded. Just remember that while Champix should help, it will take a combination of willpower, encouragement from family and friends and advice from a health professional to beat the habit for good.

2. Champix binds to the same receptors in the brain, also triggering the release of dopamine. But with Champix, a lesser amount is released over a longer period of time. That means you might experience fewer cravings and withdrawal symptoms in the absence of nicotine.

Itchy, flaky scalp? Three-way solution

It isn’t always easy to tell what’s causing your scalp problems. While dandruff is responsible for most itchy, flaky scalps, it could also be psoriasis or even dermatitis.

S

calp problems are caused by the over-production of skin cells and this happens when the delicate rhythm of skin renewal on the scalp is upset. Your scalp becomes itchy, and the excess dead skin cells flake off, usually ending up on your shoulders. It’s embarrassing wearing a dusting of white on your clothing, and most people assume the cause of their flaking scalp is dandruff. But it may not be. 36

www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

Is it dandruff? Dandruff, scalp dermatitis and even mild psoriasis all have similar symptoms. And this is where it gets tricky – if you’re unsure what is causing the problem, how do you know what to treat? An anti-dandruff shampoo won’t help a flaky scalp if dandruff isn’t the cause of the problem. The smartest approach is to get a diagnosis from your doctor, and use a shampoo proven to be effective on all three scalp conditions.

Neutrogena® T/Gel® Shampoo

Neutrogena® T/Gel® Shampoo is a three-way solution to scalp problems. It is proven effective in treating dandruff, psoriasis and scalp dermatitis. It works quickly to restore the scalp’s normal balance. It is the only shampoo containing Neutar® – a unique formulation designed to slow down the production of skin cells to a normal rate. The result is fewer and fewer flakes to land on your shoulders, and hair that is clean, soft and manageable.

Talk to your doctor about Neutrogena® T/Gel® Shampoo to see if it could help your scalp problems. Expert advice could help you identify the cause of the problem and provide you with the right solution.

Winter makes it worse In winter, less ultraviolet light hits the scalp. UV light tends to reduce skin cell production in conditions such as psoriasis, and therefore reduces the amount of dead skin cells shed from the surface of the scalp. So less UV light in winter actually makes a flaky scalp worse.

An effective solution Neutrogena® T/Gel® Shampoo starts to work on contact, so it helps control the itching and flaking from the first use. Tests also prove the active ingredients in Neutrogena® T/Gel® Shampoo continue to work for hours after the shampoo is rinsed off.

Heartburn & acid reflux? Be sure to treat the cause

Coping with heartburn or acid reflux twice a week or more is bad enough, without having to constantly treat it. So for frequent sufferers, there’s now great news – a prescription-free treatment that could free you from heartburn for up to three months.1

I

f you suffer from recurring heartburn, it might be because you’re only addressing the symptoms, not the cause. Heartburn and acid reflux occurs when acid from the stomach flows up into the food pipe (oesophagus), causing a burning pain in the chest and, in some cases, a sour acid taste in the mouth. Too much stomach acid is usually to blame, and so to tackle the problem effectively you may need to limit the amount of acid your stomach produces in the first place. 38

www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

Causes of heartburn The stomach uses acid to break down food for digestion, sterilise food and protect against infection. Specialised cells in your stomach lining produce this acid and pump it into the stomach. If too many of these pumps produce acid at the same time, it can result in excess stomach acid. Many things can trigger excess acid production – certain foods and drinks, having a busy lifestyle and specific medical conditions.

Watching what you eat, reducing excess weight, stopping smoking and avoiding stressful situations can all help reduce heartburn or reflux. But to stop heartburn or reflux at its source, you may need to regulate the production of stomach acid. That’s why millions of people worldwide use Losec®, shown to be

twice as effective as antacids in the relief of heartburn and reflux.2

Treat the root cause Unlike antacids that only temporarily relieve the symptoms of heartburn/ reflux, Losec regulates the amount of acid your stomach produces. Losec provides 24-hour relief from heartburn and reflux.3 And now, with the brand new addition of Losec Extra to pharmacy, longer-lasting relief might even be possible.

Losec Extra, without prescription Losec Extra (omeprazole 20mg) may provide up to three months relief when taken for two weeks.1 It’s now available from your pharmacy – without prescription – making it easier to get lasting freedom from the nagging pain of heartburn.
