Giveaways Galore! Health & Wellbeing gift package + Raising Children DVD

In this issue

With the year having had a couple of months to bed in, how are those New Year resolutions panning out? One of the favourites is looking after yourself better – stopping smoking, getting more exercise, fueling your body with good nutrients, and generally making sure your body and mind are in the right balance. This issue might help you turn that wishful thinking into reality. This is the year of the Dragon, deemed by some to be a lucky year to be born. Chinese Horoscopes aside, expecting a baby is a huge event in anyone’s life. This issue has some guidance on nutrient support for both mum and dad to be, and once bubby is here you’ll need that manual you wished all babies and toddlers came with! Well it’s finally here, with the Raising Children DVD, packed with 50 different stories from newborn to three years old. I produced this material which explains why cute little Emma Harper is sharing the cover with me. We have 20 of these DVDs to give away. Turn to page 20 to be in to win.

An advanced approach

to dental care Did you know that the thin layer of enamel covering your teeth, which helps keep them strong and healthy, is irreplaceable? Once it’s gone, you can’t get it back.

P

rotecting your tooth enamel is essential to keeping a healthy set of teeth for life. The problem is, your tooth enamel comes in direct contact with food and drinks every day, making it prone to attack from food acids. These acids can wear away your enamel and cause problems such as cavities and tooth decay, all of which spoils the appearance and strength of your teeth.

TOOTH ENAMEL CAN’T BE REPLACED Without proper care, tooth enamel can completely wear away. And once it’s gone, it can’t be replaced. 4

www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

That’s why it’s important to think about the toothpaste you’re using.

HOW TO PROTECT TOOTH ENAMEL?

Macleans Advanced is specifically designed to protect enamel and keep it strong. Its Enamelock™ formula locks in vital minerals, such as fluoride, and locks out plaque acids. Fluoride helps disrupt oral bacteria and slows down the production of harmful acids. Macleans Advanced Enamelock Formula helps maximise fluoride delivery at the teeth’s surface, which in turn maximises enamel strength.

OTHER BENEFITS OF MACLEANS ADVANCED Not only does Macleans Advanced help protect enamel, but it also provides the benefits of regular toothpaste to give you healthy gums and fresh breath – providing effective dental protection for the whole family.

MACLEANS ADVANCED BENEFITS • Provides triple protection for strong teeth, healthy gums and fresh breath. Enamelock formula helps protect • and strengthen tooth enamel. Locks in vital minerals and locks out • plaque acids.

TOOTHPASTE – BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT! Imagine this…You squirt a gel from an aerosol can onto your toothbrush and start brushing your teeth. Activated by the heat of the mouth, the gel quickly transforms to an iso-active foaming paste inside the mouth. The gel-to-foam formula rapidly expands and efficiently disperses through the mouth penetrating hard-to-reach gaps between the teeth where plaque and stains can form. This is an exciting innovation in toothpaste – and you can try it yourself with Macleans iso–active foaming gel toothpaste. Features of Macleans iso-active foaming gel toothpaste include: • Whitens 33% more effectively than a regular Macleans toothpaste • Protects all surfaces of the tooth – front, back and in between • Gets into hard to reach places that a toothbrush may miss

• Ongoing use delivers all the protective benefits of a Macleans fluoride formulation to help maintain healthy gums, strong teeth and fresh breath.

If you smoke a pack a day you will have more than $4000 extra cash 12 months after you quit!

Want to quit smoking?

Q

We may have the answers

I’ve tried to quit without support, but always failed. What am I doing wrong?

Trying to quit with no support is difficult. Around 95% of smokers who try to quit by going cold turkey are smoking again within a year. One of the reasons for this is many people suffer nicotine withdrawal symptoms when they quit. These symptoms can last more than 10 weeks and may include the desire to smoke, headaches, sleepless nights, feeling down or irritability.

Q

So, is there a different approach?

Yes, one option is Champix, a medication which can help you stop smoking. It is also quite different to gum

6

www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

or patch-based treatments you may have tried. It is a tablet you take twice a day for at least 12 weeks.

Q

Does it work?

By the end of the 12-week Champix programme, you’re four times more likely to have given up, than if you’d taken no medication.

Q

Are there side effects?

Talk to your doctor about the potential side effects of Champix. Two common ones are nausea and difficulty sleeping. Some people may experience side effects such as mood changes, but these are rare, and it isn’t known if they occur as a result of quitting or taking Champix.

Q

How does Champix work?

Champix works in two ways. It reduces withdrawal symptoms and blocks the effect of nicotine, so if you do smoke, you probably won’t enjoy it as much.

Q

What will it cost?

If you’re ready to quit now, talk to your doctor about Champix. You may be eligible to have the entire 12-week course funded. Normal doctors’ fees and pharmacy dispensing fees apply.

Q

Is Champix all I need to quit?

Just remember that while Champix may help, it may take a combination of professional support, willpower and encouragement from family and friends, to beat the habit. If you want to know more about Champix go to www.champix.co.nz

WHEN WILL I NOTICE THE BENEFITS? Ever wondered what happens to your body when you stop smoking? The changes begin almost immediately... • In 20 minutes… your blood pressure and pulse rate may drop to normal • In 24 hours… your chance of heart attack decreases • In 48 hours… your ability to smell and taste is enhanced • 2 weeks to 3 months… walking becomes easier and lung function increases up to 30%. And the improvements continue for up to 15 years when your risk of coronary heart disease is the same as a non-smoker. For more positive results from quitting, go to www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

Ask your doctor about Champix Champix (varenicline) 0.5 mg & 1 mg Tablets. Champix (varenicline) is a prescription medicine that helps adults stop smoking. Champix is fully funded under special authority. A pharmacy charge and normal doctor’s fees apply. Do not take Champix if you are allergic to varenicline or any other tablet ingredients. Tell your doctor if you have ever had depression, other mental health problems, kidney problems, have a history of repeated fits, are pregnant, intend to become pregnant or are breastfeeding. Some people have had changes in behaviour, mood or thinking including self-harm or harming others. If you or your family notice changes in your behaviour, mood or thinking, stop taking Champix and see your doctor. Some people have had allergic reactions to Champix that can be life threatening. If you get swelling of the face, mouth, throat or a skin rash, stop taking Champix and see your doctor immediately. There have been reports of heart attack and strokes in some people taking Champix. Heart attacks and strokes can also be caused by smoking. If you have any of these conditions tell your doctor. Common side effects include nausea, constipation, flatulence, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, difficulty in sleeping and abnormal dreams. If you have other side effects see your doctor. Always read the label and use as directed. Consult your doctor to see if Champix is right for you. Contains varenicline 0.5 mg or 1 mg. Cold sores?

Don’t wait, act fast... When you get the tingle, itch or burn, announcing there’s a cold sore on the way, you just want the pain and embarrassment to end. Now you can get fast action with a single-dose treatment that works from the inside.

MAKE COLD SORE SUFFERING A THING OF THE PAST If you suffer from cold sores you’re already familiar with that dreadful feeling when, just before your important meeting or big day out, you wake up to 8

www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

the unmistakable tingling lip that warns you another cold sore is on its way. After the tingle comes the red, angry and painful cold sore that, without treatment, could take six or more days to disappear.1

Now there is an exciting treatment that gets to work on cold sores from where they start – inside the body. Subsequently it can speed up healing time so you will feel more confident to face the rest of the world sooner.

SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE ONE-DOSE TREATMENT Now you no longer need to dread the “tingle”. Famvir Once is a convenient treatment for cold sores. Now in one step you can stop the cold sore virus multiplying from within the body, with a simple single-dose tablet. Taken as soon as you feel the first tingle, burn or itch of an impending cold sore, Famvir Once gets to work on the cold sore simply, making messy creams and patches a thing of the past.

FAMVIR ONCE BENEFITS • A single-dose treatment • Starts to treat cold sores from inside the body • Speeds healing time by 32%1* • Nearly halves the likelihood of a secondary cold sore1# • No messy patches or creams.

REDUCES HEALING TIME If the tingle progresses to a blister or cold sore, treatment with Famvir Once can speed healing time by 32%.1* The convenient single-dose of Famvir Once tablets means you do not have to touch your cold sore, thus reducing the likelihood of cross-contamination.

HSV1 INFECTION – THE LIFELONG VIRUS A cold sore is an acute viral infection of the lips, caused by the Herpes Simplex type 1 virus (HSV1). Studies estimate that around 90% of adults have been infected by the virus.2 Most often exposure occurs during childhood, and once it enters the body it remains with us for life, lying dormant in the nerves. While most of the time it lays quietly and causes no problems, the cold sore virus can be triggered back into action, usually at the most inopportune times! Once it is reactivated the virus travels to the lip, where it multiplies and causes a cold sore.

What’s the difference between

Avigra & Viagra?

When you look at the two little blue pills, Avigra and Viagra, it’s hard to spot the difference. That’s because there is none – except the price.

A

vigra is the more affordable treatment for erectile dysfunction. It is made by Pfizer, the same people who developed Viagra, and has the exact same active ingredient as Viagra. So the only difference is the price. Erectile dysfunction can be a cause of embarrassment for the estimated 39% of men over the age of 40 who sometimes experience difficulty with erections. For more than a decade, Pfizer has been a leading name in treating erectile dysfunction, helping millions of men the world over improve their sex lives. 10

www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

AVIGRA – GREAT VALUE AND RESULTS Avigra offers the same highly effective results as Pfizer’s well known Viagra treatment, but with the added benefit of substantially reduced cost – so now men have even more to smile about. Until the arrival of Avigra, the cost of treatment has prevented some men from receiving the help they needed. By making treatment more affordable, Pfizer is helping men once again know the joys of an active and rewarding sex life.

TESTED AND PROVEN Studies show that Avigra, with its active ingredient sildenafil citrate, produces

grade 4 erections (see scale on this page), in 58% of users. Along with an optimal erection, many men using this treatment report an increase in sexual confidence, self-esteem and sexual relations satisfaction.

Ask your doctor if Avigra can help you And request it at your pharmacy AVIGRA (sildenafil citrate) is an unfunded prescription medicine for use by men in the treatment of erection problems resulting in a natural response to sexual stimulation. You will need to pay for this medicine and normal doctor’s fees apply. Do not use Avigra if you: are being treated for angina (chest pain) or other heart conditions with medicines called nitrates; are using amyl nitrite; have heart or blood vessel problems that make sexual intercourse inadvisable; have suffered a heart attack or stroke in the last 6 months; have severe liver problems; have unusually high or low blood pressure that is not effectively treated; have loss of vision in one or both eyes from an eye disease called non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION); have an eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa; have an allergy to AVIGRA or similar medications. Side effects include headache, dizziness, flushing, indigestion, nasal congestion, temporary changes in vision, diarrhoea, urinary tract infection or rash. If symptoms continue or you have side effects, see your doctor. If any of the following happen, tell your doctor immediately or go to Accident and Emergency at your nearest hospital: signs of allergy such as shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other part; chest pain; sudden decrease or loss of hearing; seizures, fits or convulsions; a persistent and painful erection; loss of eyesight in one or more eyes. Use strictly as directed. Consult your doctor to see if AVIGRA is right for you. Contains sildenafil citrate 25 mg, 50 mg & 100 mg. Is inflammation

slowing down your recovery? Ever injured your back, crawled into bed, hoping the pain would go away… and it hasn’t? The culprit could be inflammation. REDUCE INFLAMMATION Inflammation is the body’s way of protecting an injury, but if left untreated, it may cause more pain, slowing recovery. When you suffer a pulled muscle or tendon, chemicals are released at the injury site, which cause swelling 12

www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

and further sensitivity to the body’s pain receptors. If left untreated, inflammation may result in ongoing pain.1 Treating the pain and inflammation quickly may reduce any restriction and discomfort experienced to help get you moving again sooner.

DON’T IGNORE PAIN If you’re suffering from back pain, it doesn’t pay to just ignore it and hope it will get better. Stopping all exercise, or completely restricting movement may not always be the best route to recovery.

KEEP MOVING Part of managing back pain is to keep moving. This may include physical manipulation, such as physiotherapy, and/or anti-inflammatory medication to help provide temporary relief from acute pain and inflammation.

VOLTAREN RAPID WORKS TWO WAYS Voltaren Rapid 25 contains a powerful anti-inflammatory and is clinically proven to help reduce pain and inflammation in as little as 15 minutes.2 You won’t find Voltaren Rapid 25 on the shelf – it’s a specialised treatment you can get only after speaking with your pharmacist. Your pharmacist can also give you expert advice on managing your pain and inflammation.

Voltaren® Rapid 25 is a Pharmacist Only medicine

SIGNS OF INFLAMMATION These may include… • Localised swelling • Redness • Heat/burning sensation • Pain • Stiffness.

TALK TO YOUR PHARMACIST The simple rule is, don’t just ignore muscle or back pain, hoping it will get better. When acute back pain strikes, head to your pharmacy, and ask your pharmacist about treating with Voltaren Rapid 25, to help you stay active and get back to doing what you enjoy.

VOLTAREN RAPID 25 BENEFITS • Fast-acting2 • Clinically proven to reduce acute pain • Pharmacist Only medicine for strong pain.

Heartburn...

Don’t let it stop your fun Heartburn can quickly turn a pleasant occasion into unpleasant. If you suffer from heartburn and just want to relax and enjoy life, there is a simple answer.

I

f the last thing you want to be worried about is heartburn and acid reflux, you need to know there is a treatment that can stop heartburn in its tracks so you can get on with enjoying life. For frequent heartburn sufferers Losec Extra is the answer. It could free you from heartburn for up to three months, and you don’t need a prescription to get it. 14

www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

UNDERSTANDING HEARTBURN If you suffer from recurring heartburn, it might be because you’re only addressing the symptoms, not the cause. Heartburn and acid reflux occurs when acid from the stomach flows up into the food pipe (oesophagus), causing a burning pain in the chest and, in some cases, a sour acid taste in the mouth. Too much stomach acid is usually to blame, and so to tackle the problem effectively you may need to limit the amount of acid your stomach produces in the first place.

GET LASTING RELIEF COMMON DIETARY TRIGGERS Heartburn can be triggered by: • Spicy or fatty food • Chocolate or sweets • Caffeinated or fizzy drinks • Alcohol • Eating large portions and eating before bedtime.

Watching what you eat, reducing excess weight, stopping smoking and avoiding stressful situations can all help reduce heartburn or reflux. But to stop heartburn or reflux at its source, you may need to regulate the production of stomach acid. That’s why millions of people worldwide use Losec®, shown to be twice as effective as antacids in the relief of heartburn and reflux.1

TREAT THE ROOT CAUSE CAUSES OF HEARTBURN The stomach uses acid to sterilise food and protect against infection. Specialised cells in your stomach lining produce this acid and pump it into the stomach. If too many of these pumps produce acid at the same time, it can result in excess stomach acid. Many things can trigger excess acid production – certain foods and drinks, having a busy lifestyle, and specific medical conditions.

Unlike antacids that only temporarily relieve the symptoms of heartburn/ reflux, Losec regulates the amount of acid your stomach produces, so that symptoms don’t have the chance to rear their head at all. Losec Extra (omeprazole 20mg) may provide up to three months’ relief when taken for two weeks.2 It’s available from your pharmacy – without prescription – making it easier to get lasting freedom from the nagging pain of heartburn.

Ask for Losec® at your pharmacy 1. Mason I, et al. The management of acid-related dyspepsia in General Practice: a comparison of omeprazole versus an antacid-alginate/ranitidine management strategy. It takes two...

To give baby the best start

If you and your partner are planning a baby, both of you can play a part in providing the best start to life. And the preparation starts before conception.

the thyroid. It plays a critical role in the development of your baby’s brain and nervous system during pregnancy. Also, in the first two trimesters, your baby is entirely dependent on maternal thyroid hormone.

ELEVIT NOW CONTAINS IODINE To top its long-standing benefits, Elevit pregnancy supplement now contains 250mcg of iodine, to adequately meet Ministry of Health recommended standards in pregnancy and breastfeeding, to assist with healthy brain development.

ELEVIT WITH IODINE HAS YOUR NUTRIENT NEEDS COVERED

FOR MUMS-TO-BE

A

lot of changes occur when you become pregnant, with the growing baby placing demands on the mother for lots of extra nutrients. But it’s the first few weeks, when you may not even realise you’re pregnant, that your baby needs the most dietary support. This is why it’s important to take your pregnancy supplement as soon as you start trying for a baby. One of the nutrients you and your baby need more of is iodine, which is essential for the healthy function of

Elevit with Iodine provides the extra nutrients needed in pregnancy from the start of the journey right through to the finish. Many women know about the importance of folic acid in early pregnancy – taking it in the first three months is essential in reducing the risk of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. However, the need for additional nutrients doesn’t cease after the first trimester. The body’s demand for certain nutrients, like folic acid, increases throughout pregnancy, up until your baby reaches maximum foetal growth.

FOLIC ACID FOR EVERY STAGE OF PREGNANCY Healthy cells depend on the continued and proper replication of our DNA, and folate (folic acid) plays an important role in that process. In pregnancy however, as your baby grows, the rate of folate breakdown in your body actually increases and peaks in the third trimester. So you need to compensate for the accelerated breakdown of folate and ensure your folate needs are met throughout your pregnancy. www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

* Iodine source: WHO 2005

OTHER VITAMINS ARE ESSENTIAL TOO The graph above shows the significant nutrient increases required in pregnancy recommended by the Ministry of Health (the pink part of the graph) with folic acid showing the greatest increase, followed by iodine.

ELEVIT WITH IODINE MEETS MINISTRY OF HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS Elevit with Iodine pregnancy supplement delivers the essential nutrients* both

you and your baby will need, meeting the Ministry of Health’s recommended standards. Elevit contains 800mcg of folic acid and is the only pregnancy supplement clinically proven to reduce the risk of neural tube defects by 92%.1 Elevit with Iodine also contains 60mg of iron to help combat fatigue and prevent dietary iron deficiency, and 250mcg of iodine to assist with baby’s healthy brain development. It also contains zinc, vitamin C, calcium, B6, B12 and other essential nutrients – all in a once-daily tablet.

TAKE ELEVIT WITH IODINE DAILY To help prevent neural tube defects and to help meet both yours and baby’s ongoing needs, Elevit with Iodine should be taken daily as soon as you start trying for a baby and right throughout pregnancy.

As many couples have discovered, getting pregnant isn’t always straightforward, and part of the problem could be declining sperm health.

WHAT’S AFFECTING SPERM?

FOR DADS-TO-BE

W

hile mums prepare their bodies for pregnancy, dads too can make sure they’re in the best possible shape for conception.

Changing lifestyle and environmental factors, such as the use of pesticides and herbicides, longer working weeks, increased stress levels, smoking and alcohol consumption may increase the amount of free radicals in the body (see box on pg19 for details) – possibly resulting in lower sperm counts and poorer quality sperm.

PRECONCEPTION CARE FOR MEN

PROVEN SUPPORT

Couples wanting to optimise their chances of falling pregnant should begin by optimising sperm health. In some cases, stopping smoking or drinking and eating better foods will help fight the effects of stress and toxins on the body. But now there’s additional support – a unique supplement for men specially formulated to support sperm health.

Menevit is the only male preconception supplement that’s been clinically shown to help with pregnancy rates.2 From the makers of Elevit, Menevit is available to all couples planning a baby, and can be taken from the time you decide to try.

MENEVIT ONCE A DAY Menevit is a once-a-day men’s supplement, containing antioxidants to help improve sperm health and optimise your chances of falling pregnant. It is made up of seven active ingredients which can help to fight the damage caused by free radicals, improving sperm quality.

WHAT ARE FREE RADICALS? Free radicals are like out-of-control chemical pin-balls, bouncing around causing damage to cells such as sperm. Antioxidants, including vitamin C, vitamin E and selenium all help ‘scavenge’ free radicals and reduce their production.

Raising Children... The ‘How to’ manual for the first three years of life

Wouldn’t it be great if all new babies came with a ‘How to’ manual? Unfortunately they don’t, yet most parents crave practical advice in those vital first few years of their child’s life.

R

aising Children in New Zealand is the ‘How to’ manual for parents of children under three. It was made in consultation with a New Zealand Advisory Board of child care experts so parents can be assured the information is reliable and credible. The DVD contains practical advice on everything from fevers to first aid, toys to teething, and the basics such as breastfeeding, eating and sleeping. In addition there are guidelines on what to expect at each age and stage, and how to deal with the challenges of parenting as they arise... everything to help get your child off to a great start.

CHILD CARE EXPERTS INVOLVED Jude Dobson gathered together New Zealand’s leading early childhood welfare organisations to produce the Raising Children in New Zealand TV series 20

www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

which screened on TVNZ last year, and the accompanying DVD. A former nurse, and now a mother of three, Jude worked in post-natal wards when she first graduated, with the intention of becoming a midwife. She says she very quickly recognised how crucial it was for new parents to receive support and information. “Somehow I got sidetracked into telly, but I’ve always been interested in health and health information, so through Family Health Diary and as a TV producer, I’ve been able to scratch that itch,” she says. For the past decade Jude has made a variety of TV programmes about parenting and child health and development. But she always thought it would be good for parents to have something tangible to refer to when baby arrived, to help them navigate the first few years.

50 STORIES ON EACH DVD With 3.5 hours of content, the Raising Children in New Zealand DVD has 50 stories to choose from, and if you need help in the middle of the night, the index helps you quickly find what you’re looking for. The DVD is divided into Newborn, Infant, Crawler, Toddler and Two-year-old. These ages are further divided into categories including age & stage, breastfeeding, eating, sleeping, mind & body, health & wellbeing and dealing with challenges. There are also SKIP stories (Strategies with Kids/Information for Parents) applicable to all ages and stages, that look at the six key things children need to grow up to be happy, capable adults.

Depression treatment that’s fully funded

If you have been prescribed Efexor-XR for the treatment of major depression, it’s good to know that in New Zealand this medicine is fully funded, so there are no additional costs for you.

E

fexor-XR (venlafaxine) has helped thousands of New Zealanders living with depression.1 It is used in the treatment and prevention of relapse of depression and is also prescribed for a range of mood disorders including generalised anxiety, social anxiety and panic disorder.2 Efexor-XR’s dual-action approach to depression may help resolve a broad range of depression symptoms like constant sadness, trouble sleeping or low energy. Resolving these symptoms can be the first step to helping you 24

www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

control your depression so you can feel like your old self again.

YOU DON’T NEED TO CHANGE If you’re taking Efexor-XR, you may be offered an alternate brand next time you pick up your prescription. However, you don’t have to change. You can stay on Efexor-XR if you want, and if it’s working for you. Remember that it’s fully funded, so there is no additional cost to you. You just need to let your doctor know that you want to stay with Efexor-XR, and ask your pharmacist for it by name.

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF TREATMENT? In treating depression, the goal is more than just to feel better – you want to try and eliminate all your depression symptoms and to keep them from coming back. Doctors call this the remission of symptoms and people who reach remission of symptoms are less likely to have their symptoms return. No two people have the same symptoms. Remission for you could mean having days without feelings of constant sadness, or the return of your normal sleeping and eating habits.

It could also mean having energy again for your favourite activities and renewed interest in the things you used to love doing. You can find more information about fully-funded Efexor-XR on our website www.pfizer.co.nz

Talk to your doctor to see if EFEXOR-XR is right for you

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW YOUR DOCTOR’S ADVICE One of the most important things to remember is to take your medication as prescribed, and stay on it for as long as your doctor advises. That’s because it’s not uncommon for depression symptoms to return. For some, the symptoms of depression seem to disappear or improve to the point where they no longer seem to interfere with your life. If this happens to you, don’t be tempted to stop taking your medication, unless advised by your doctor, because sometimes these symptoms come back. Doctors call this a relapse, and if this occurs it is usually within six months of starting treatment. Symptoms can also return long after the depression seems to have disappeared. This new episode of depression is called a recurrence. Evidence suggests that a recurrence can make it more likely that symptoms will continue to return in the future.3 If your treatment is Efexor-XR your doctor will know the right dosage and how long you need to stay on Efexor-XR to get the best results.

DIGESTIVE health

It’s more than just regularity Have you ever suffered from irregularity, bloating, wind, or digestive discomfort?

A

ll these symptoms can mean that your digestive system is not running optimally, which can lead to longer term bowel health concerns. Digestive health complaints can be caused by poor diet, lack of exercise, side effects from medicines, pregnancy, just to name a few.

26

www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

If you have suffered from any of these symptoms, you have probably tried a number of solutions. But have you tried Phloe? Phloe is a natural, gentle daily supplement that has been clinically shown to keep you regular and avoid digestive discomfort.

HOW PHLOE WORKS

Derived from kiwifruit, Phloe has a unique triple action formula. It combines fibre, prebiotics and enzymes to naturally support and optimise bowel health. This combination helps avoid episodes of bloating, flatulence and the ‘feeling of fullness’. The fibre in Phloe works by bulking the stool with moisture, assisting movement through the bowel. The great thing about the enzymes in Phloe is that they work naturally and gently to support movement in the bowel. We all need to feed the good bacteria in our digestive systems, and the prebiotics in Phloe do just that. They have been shown to support the good bacteria in our digestive systems and to help with the natural balance of bacteria in the gut. Having the right balance is one of the keys to maintaining good bowel health and overall wellbeing.

DOCTORS RECOMMEND PHLOE A survey has shown that 65% of doctors see between 6-15 patients a week for gastrointestinal concerns! Digestive health complaints are very common, with constipation the most stated reason for visiting the doctor. 91% of doctors in the survey said they would recommend Phloe to their patients.1

ALSO IN CHEWABLE TABLETS Phloe also comes in chewable tablets – a tasty, convenient way to get the benefits of Phloe without needing water. Kiwi-tropical flavoured, the chewable tablets are perfect for busy people, travellers and kids. Just pop one in your mouth and chew!

JOIN THE PHLOE HEALTHY YOU CLUB Sign up and receive Healthy You magazine, providing you with useful information and tips on managing your bowel health long term. In addition, MedicAlert® emblems are fully supported with an electronic health record of vital patient information, accessible by emergency services and doctors, all day, every day and from anywhere in the world. So, if you’re travelling overseas, emergency services immediately know who you are, how to contact your closest relatives, what medication you’re taking, what you’re allergic to, and most importantly, there’s no language barrier. Likewise if a person has dementia or a mental health condition, a MedicAlert® bracelet immediately alerts health professionals, the police, or other agencies, as to what the condition is, what medicines are essential for continued treatment, and support people to contact.

Murray Lord says this can have a significant effect on the way police or other agencies treat a person who comes to their notice.

Hayfever... it’s still around

Hayfever isn’t just a spring time problem. Those who suffer from the sniffles and sneezes that accompany seasonal allergies, know the problem can hang around long into summer and autumn – in fact for as long as grasses, weeds and trees release their pollen.

T

he best way to treat hayfever is to be prepared so that no matter where you are, you can act quickly at the first sign of symptoms. 30

www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

SO WHICH TREATMENT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR? You want something you know will work, so the first stop should be your pharmacy. This is where you will find the more powerful treatments.

One of the treatments often recommended is Claratyne because it’s clinically proven to deal with symptoms such as runny nose, itchy, watery eyes and sneezing.

CLARATYNE WORKS FAST Claratyne is a long-lasting antihistamine that works fast and continues working for 24 hours, so you only need to treat once a day. And the good news is, it won’t make you drowsy. Claratyne targets the cause of your hayfever by blocking the release of histamine in your body. It is the histamine release that causes your irritating allergy symptoms.

WHAT CAUSES HAYFEVER? For seasonal allergic rhinitis, which occurs mostly in spring and summer, the trigger is usually wind-borne pollen from trees, grass and weeds. If you think that pollen is the culprit, keep the family indoors with doors and windows shut on windy days during the hayfever season. You may need to keep your car windows closed when travelling and wearing glasses outdoors will help protect your eyes. Pollen is generally “on the move” in the early morning, between 5am and 10am, so stay indoors at this time, and keep away from freshly cut grass as mowing the lawn stirs up pollen and moulds. The plants most likely to cause hayfever symptoms are those that are wind pollinated. You can check them out on the Allergy New Zealand pollen calendar at www.allergy.org.nz If you have perennial allergic rhinitis that hangs around most of the year, it is probably caused by dust mites, mould or animal dander. If this sounds like you, there are things you can do to help minimise

the problem. These include regularly washing pets, replacing carpets with hard flooring and wet mopping regularly, and ensuring a well ventilated, dry home to prevent mould growth. Regardless of the type of allergy you have, one dose of Claratyne can treat your major hayfever and allergy symptoms.

ABOUT CLARATYNE • Works fast • Long-lasting, 24-hour relief from sneezing, itchy watery eyes, runny nose and hives • Non-drowsy formula, so you can get on with work and life • Suitable for all the family – liquid formulation for children • Targets the cause of the problem.
