Welcome back to the first edition of Family Health Diary magazine for 2013. After last summer’s rainy aberration, this one’s felt like the good old Kiwi summer we all like to remember. Our pool has had regular use by the kids and their mates, and shock… horror… I’ve even got in a few times. Once in and pottering about on the lilo, the kids press further asking me if I ever used to put my head under as a kid. I’ll have to fish out some photos of their mother as a kid looking suitably wet all over after an afternoon of underwater races, Marco Polo and tag in the family pool, just to reassure them I was once as exuberant as they are. Well, school is back so it’s back to routine we all go. We’ve got a chance to make the hum drum a bit more exciting though – this month we’re giving away a Dyson Ball vacuum cleaner to have you whiz around the house in style. Hoping 2013 has a few positive challenges in it, to keep you on your toes. Enjoy this gorgeous weather… it’s good for the soul.

Cold sores be gone! It’s not hard to tell when a cold sore’s coming – first there’s the tingle, itch or burn, then comes the real pain – embarrassment. Fortunately now there’s a fast end to the social inconvenience of cold sores. MAKE COLD SORE SUFFERING A THING OF THE PAST If you suffer from cold sores you’re already familiar with that dreadful feeling when, just before your important meeting or big day out, you wake up to the unmistakable tingling lip that signals another cold sore is on its way. After the tingle comes the red, angry 4

and painful cold sore that, without treatment, could take six or more days to disappear.1 Now there is an exciting treatment that gets to work on cold sores from where they start – inside the body. Subsequently it can speed up healing time so you will feel more confident to face the rest of the world sooner.1
SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE ONE-DOSE TREATMENT Now you no longer need to dread the “tingle”. Famvir Once is an advance in treatment that speeds the healing time of cold sores.1 Now in one step you can stop the cold sore virus multiplying from within the body, with a simple single-dose tablet treatment. Taken as soon as you feel the first tingle, burn or itch of an impending cold sore, Famvir Once gets to work on the cold sore simply, making messy creams and patches a thing of the past.
FAMVIR ONCE BENEFITS • A single-dose treatment • Starts to treat cold sores from inside the body • Speeds healing time by 32%1* • Nearly halves the likelihood of a secondary cold sore1# • No messy patches or creams.
REDUCES HEALING TIME If the tingle progresses to a blister or cold sore, treatment with Famvir Once can speed healing time by 32%.1 The convenient single-dose of Famvir Once tablets means you do not have to touch your cold sore, thus reducing the likelihood of cross-contamination.
COLD SORES – THE LIFELONG VIRUS A cold sore is an acute viral infection of the lips, caused by the Herpes Simplex type 1 virus (HSV1). Around 90% of adults have been infected by the virus.2 Most often exposure occurs during childhood, and once it enters the body it remains with us for life, lying dormant in the nerves. While most of the time it lays quietly and causes no symptoms, the cold sore virus can be triggered back into action, usually at the most inopportune times! Once it is reactivated the virus travels to the lip, where it multiplies and causes a cold sore.

Stand up to excessive
daytime sleepiness If you suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness due to obstructive sleep apnoea, there is a way to help stay awake and alert for the times you need to.
S
leep disorders don’t end when you wake up. For anyone with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), interrupted sleep can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness. This, in turn, may cause other health concerns. You may find that you are falling asleep at inappropriate times, for instance whilst sitting and talking to someone. The gold standard treatment for moderate to severe OSA is Continuous Positive Airways Pressure (CPAP) to help you with a better night’s sleep. But even with CPAP, daytime sleepiness can still be an issue.
FACING THE DAY WITH FULL STEAM Around 22% of OSA patients using CPAP continue to experience ongoing daytime sleepiness. Now there’s a way to help address the issue from a fresh perspective – by staying awake. 6
www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz

Think about your bones
...just once a year Are you taking tablet treatments to prevent osteoporosis? You might be surprised to learn there’s another option.
8
www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz
O
steoporosis is not always top of mind, which is why treatment regimes can fall by the wayside. You might currently be taking tablets to help prevent a broken bone or fracture, but the thing is you have to constantly remember to take them. Now there’s another option – a treatment you only need once a year.
INTRODUCING ACLASTA With Aclasta, there’s no need to take a tablet or think about your treatment for 12 months. Instead, one dose helps prevent your bones from fracture for a full year. Aclasta is a 15-30 minute infusion you have yearly that goes directly to your bones to make them stronger. It helps prevent fractures in your hip, spine and other bones.
NO MORE MISSED DOSES FOR A WHOLE YEAR! If you’ve been prescribed a tablet but find that you are missing doses, or struggling to take as directed, your bones may not be getting the protection they need. Osteoporosis typically does not have symptoms until a fracture occurs which is why it is so important to take your medicine as prescribed.
Aclasta removes the problems of missed tablets because a single treatment will help protect your bones from fractures for an entire year.
FULLY FUNDED Aclasta is fully funded for most people at risk of osteoporosis, which means that you will not have to pay for the medicine. However, a doctor’s fee and treatment (infusion) fees will apply. This fee covers the cost of administering the infusion, which in many cases can be done by your local doctor. Most people have no problem making the switch from oral medications to Aclasta. If you want to free yourself from having to remember to take tablets, and protect your bones for a whole year, ask your doctor if Aclasta is right for you.
ACLASTA BENEFITS • Convenient – just one dose a year • Effective – goes straight to work on your bones • No regular tablet regimes • Year-long peace of mind.
Ask your doctor if Aclasta is right for you Aclasta® is a prescription medicine for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis and the treatment of Paget’s disease of the bone. Aclasta is an infusion and contains 5mg of zoledronic acid. It is important to have an Aclasta infusion each year to ensure you get maximum treatment benefit. Check with your doctor to see if Aclasta is right for you. Aclasta is fully funded for patients who meet specified criteria. Funding does not include the cost of infusion and normal doctors and prescription charges will apply. Do not use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have kidney impairment, have low calcium levels in your blood, or if you are allergic to zoledronic acid or any of the ingredients in Aclasta or any other bisphosphonate medicine. Not recommended for children and adolescents. Caution while under dental treatment or if dental treatment is planned. Calcium, hydration status and kidney function may be assessed by your doctor before and after you are given Aclasta. Adverse effects are usually mild and transient. Common side effects are flu-like symptoms consisting of fever, fatigue, chills, and bone, joint, and/or muscle pain; anaemia; headache; dizziness, transient low blood calcium; gastrointestinal symptoms, renal impairment, breathing difficulty and lethargy. Very rarely osteonecrosis of the jaw has been reported. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your doctor. Aclasta is the registered trademark of Novartis AG. Keep on top of
osteoarthritis One in seven New Zealand adults are living with arthritis. Effective early management can help slow disease progression and improve symptom control, yet only around half of those affected use any treatment.
O
steoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, caused by wear and tear of the joints and the breakdown of cartilage, the natural cushioning between the joints. It usually occurs in the hands and weight-bearing joints, such as in the hips, knees, feet and spine. Osteoarthritis can affect many aspects of your life, from everyday activities to playing with grandchildren 10
www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz
or enjoying a round of golf. When osteoarthritis pain takes hold, don’t let it stop you from the things you love to do.
MANAGING ARTHRITIS The key to managing mild to moderate arthritis is to keep moving. Physical activity helps keep your joints flexible, manage weight and improve muscle strength, all of which can help alleviate the symptoms. However, it can be
difficult to maintain movement when you’re experiencing pain. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are an effective way to help manage the pain of osteoarthritis. And now Voltaren® has two short-term treatment options to help you manage symptoms and keep you moving.
FOR MILD OSTEOARTHRITIS Voltaren® Osteo Gel is a topical rub for mild osteoarthritis pain. It penetrates through the skin to provide temporary relief of localised pain and inflammation.

Put heartburn behind you If there’s one thing that can sour a great meal, it’s heartburn. That burning pain in the chest can be menacing and last for hours. But putting it behind you could be a case of addressing the cause, not just the symptoms.
UNDERSTANDING HEARTBURN
I
f the last thing you want to be worried about is heartburn and acid reflux, you need to know there is a simple answer – a treatment that targets the cause of heartburn, stopping it in its tracks so you can get on with enjoying life. For frequent heartburn sufferers Losec® Extra could free you from heartburn for up to three months, and you don’t need a prescription to get it. 12
www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz
If you suffer from recurring heartburn, it might be because you’re only addressing the symptoms, not the cause. Heartburn starts with stomach acid. When you produce too much stomach acid, the excess acid can flow into the food pipe (oesophagus) causing a burning pain in the chest. With that in mind, to tackle the problem effectively you may need to limit the amount of acid your stomach produces in the first place.
TREAT THE ROOT CAUSE COMMON DIETARY TRIGGERS Heartburn can be triggered by: • Spicy or fatty food • Chocolate or sweets • Caffeinated or fizzy drinks • Alcohol • Eating large portions and eating before bedtime.
Unlike antacids that only temporarily relieve the symptoms of heartburn/ reflux, Losec® and Losec® Extra regulate the amount of acid your stomach produces, so that symptoms don’t have the chance to rear their head at all. Losec® Extra (omeprazole 20mg) may provide up to three months’ relief when taken for two weeks. It’s available from your pharmacy – without prescription – making it easier to get lasting freedom from the nagging pain of heartburn.
GET LASTING RELIEF Watching what you eat, reducing excess weight, stopping smoking and avoiding stressful situations can all help reduce heartburn or reflux. But to stop heartburn or reflux at its source, you may need to regulate the production of stomach acid. That’s why millions of people worldwide use either Losec® or Losec® Extra, shown to be twice as effective as antacids in the relief of heartburn and reflux.
HEARTBURN BASICS • The stomach uses acid to sterilise food and protect against infection. • If too many specialised cells in your stomach lining are pumping acid into your stomach all at once, it can result in excess stomach acid. • Many things can trigger excess acid production – certain foods and drinks, having a busy lifestyle and specific medical conditions.
Ask for Losec® at your pharmacy
Losec® and Losec® Extra are used for the relief of reflux-like symptoms, heartburn or regurgitation for people aged 18 years or older. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist see your pharmacist. Bayer New Zealand Limited, Auckland. TAPS CH3377

DEPRESSION
If your treatment is working, why change?
If you have been prescribed Efexor-XR® (venlafaxine) for the treatment of major depression, it’s important to know that if you are offered an alternative brand you don’t have to change.
E
fexor-XR remains fully funded at no extra cost to you until at least April 2017. You just need to let your doctor know that you want to stay with Efexor-XR, and ask your pharmacist for it by name. Efexor-XR has helped thousands of New Zealanders living with depression.1 Not only is Efexor-XR used in the treatment and prevention of relapse of depression, but it is also prescribed for a range of mood disorders including generalised anxiety, social anxiety and panic disorder.2 14
www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz
DUAL ACTION Efexor-XR’s dual-action approach to depression may help resolve a broad range of depression symptoms like constant sadness, trouble sleeping or low energy. Resolving these symptoms can be the first step to helping you control your depression so you can feel like your old self again.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF TREATMENT? In treating depression, the goal is more than just to feel better – you want to
try and eliminate all your depression symptoms and to keep them from coming back. Doctors call this the remission of symptoms and people who reach remission of symptoms are less likely to have their symptoms return. No two people have the same symptoms. Remission for you could mean having days without feelings of
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW YOUR DOCTOR’S ADVICE One of the most important things to remember is to take your medication as prescribed, and stay on it for as long as your doctor advises. That’s because it’s not uncommon for depression symptoms to return. For some, the symptoms of depression seem to disappear, or improve to the point where they no longer seem to interfere with your life. If this happens to you, don’t be tempted to stop taking your medication, unless your doctor advises it, because sometimes these symptoms come back. Doctors call this a relapse, and if this occurs it is usually within six months of starting treatment. Symptoms can also return long after the depression seems to have disappeared. This new episode of depression is called a recurrence. Evidence suggests that a recurrence can make it more likely that symptoms will continue to return in the future.3 If your treatment is Efexor-XR your doctor will know the right dosage and how long you need to stay on Efexor-XR to get the best results.
constant sadness, or the return of your normal sleeping and eating habits. It could also mean having energy again for your favourite activities and renewed interest in the things you used to love doing. You can find more information about fully-funded Efexor-XR on our website www.pfizer.co.nz

Get real control
over asthma Many Kiwis with asthma think they have to put up with coughing and wheezing: that’s because they don’t realise what good asthma control should feel like.
T
here’s a lot of evidence to show that poor asthma control often goes unrecognised. One reason for this, explains asthma expert Professor Shaun Holt in a recent Research Review article, is that patients with asthma are rarely, if ever, symptom-free, and have nothing to compare their current symptom level with. In short, they do not know what good asthma control feels like.1 Only after updating their treatment can they truly appreciate what it’s like to be on top of their asthma. 16
www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz
LEAVING SYMPTOMS BEHIND In a major New Zealand asthma study, 81% of people thought their asthma was well controlled, yet three-quarters were using their blue reliever at least once daily and the remainder were taking at least 3-4 puffs a day. 2 In short, most people overestimated their level of asthma control. The fact is, if you’re using your reliever more than twice a week, chances are your asthma is not as good as it could be.3 If this sounds like you, a move to Seretide®, the purple inhaler, could be the answer.4
HOW SERETIDE® WORKS
IS YOUR ASTHMA UNDER CONTROL?
Seretide® (fluticasone propionate/salmeterol xinafoate) is a two-in-one inhaler that combines the active ingredient in the orange preventer inhaler with a long-acting symptom controller, offering lasting control of symptoms day and night.
Control means3… • No coughing or wheezing • No night-time interruptions • No emergency visits to your doctor or hospital • Participating in activities you enjoy and not having to avoid them • Using a blue reliever inhaler less than two times a week and living life more.
IS SERETIDE® RIGHT FOR YOU?
There is a simple test to help you find out if your asthma really is under control – visit www.asthmacontrol.co.nz and answer the online questionnaire.
Your doctor is the best person to talk to about your asthma control. The most important thing is to let them know what symptoms you’re experiencing and how often you’re having them. You may not realise you can have symptom-free days for most days of the year with Seretide®, the purple inhaler.5 And if you qualify, Seretide® is fully funded. Just ask your doctor.

Your blue asthma inhaler...
the key to relief
If you have asthma, it’s vital to keep a reliable reliever inhaler with you at all times. Asthma symptoms can come on quickly, and when they do, your blue inhaler is often your first line of treatment.
I
n New Zealand, one in four kids and one in six adults experience asthma symptoms at some time.1 If you’ve had an episode yourself, you’ll understand how distressing and urgent the situation can be. At those times reassurance can be found in your blue reliever inhaler – your key to catching a breath again.
WHAT HAPPENS WITH ASTHMA? People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs. When exposed to certain triggers, the airways narrow, making it difficult to breathe. Two things happen when the airways are irritated: 18
www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz
•• Swelling: the lining of the airways becomes inflamed and swells; mucus gets clogged in the airways making it harder for air to flow through. •• Constriction: the muscles around the airways tighten up; this squeezes the airways, again making it harder for air to flow through.
SYMPTOMS Symptoms of asthma include wheezing or a slight whistle when breathing, coughing, tightness in the chest and shortness of breath. Symptoms may be mild, moderate or severe, and be intermittent (happening
now and again) or persistent (chronic). The underlying cause of asthma is unclear, but a family history of allergy makes asthma more likely.
Ventolin is also alcohol-free4 so you don’t get any unpleasant alcohol after-taste, which might be noticed by children.
COMMON TRIGGERS
Ventolin should be used for symptom relief only; or in the case of exercise-induced asthma, your doctor may tell you to take one or two puffs before you exercise. Frequent use of your blue inhaler (more than 2 to 3 times a week) means that your asthma management is not as good as it could be, and may be a reason for asking your doctor about preventative asthma treatment. A preventative inhaler can help keep asthma under control so that symptoms don’t disturb your day-to-day life.

If you’ve tried and failed,
then try again
Stopping smoking can be a tough challenge, so don’t be too hard on yourself if you haven’t managed it yet. The key is to try again… and don’t leave it too long.
S
o you made the decision to finally quit, but the triggers and desire to smoke were so overwhelming that before you knew it, you were lugging a pack of smokes again. You won’t be the first, or the last, to go back to smoking. Use the experience to reflect on your triggers, pin down what got you started again, and think of ways to avoid it in the future.
WHY YOU WENT BACK Nicotine withdrawal can last 10 weeks or more. Common symptoms include a nagging desire to smoke, increased 20

appetite, feeling anxious, irritable or depressed, or finding it hard to concentrate. The memory and associations of smoking continue to act as triggers to smoke and your brain remains primed to accept nicotine again.
HOW CHAMPIX CAN HELP Champix is a prescription medicine that can help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, and therefore reduce your desire to smoke again. Champix also blocks the effect of nicotine, so if you do smoke, you probably won’t enjoy it as much.
KEEPS YOU ON THE SMOKE-FREE PATH It’s only when you stay smoke-free for an extended period that your positive association and response to nicotine starts to diminish. Champix can support you for the first 12 weeks of your journey, at that critical time when cravings are strongest. By the end of the 12-week Champix programme, you’re four times more likely to have given up, than if you’d taken no medication.
WHAT IF YOU’VE ALREADY TRIED CHAMPIX? If you have tried Champix, stopped smoking but then a few months later returned to smoking, that doesn’t have to be the end of it. Talk to your doctor about using Champix again. A self-paid course of Champix is available at any time. A funded course is available once every 12 months – you may be eligible.
TIPS FOR STAYING SMOKE-FREE • Complete your 12-week course of Champix. • Keep your car and home smokefree. Throw out tobacco, lighters or ashtrays and ask people to smoke outside. • Feeling stressed? A cigarette is not the answer. The first one may provide short-term relief but you are likely to fall into the stressful cycle of craving another cigarette, and another….. • Beware of alcohol. It can be a major trigger anywhere, any time. • Replace smoking with exercise. You often feel better after a walk or run because it releases feel-good chemicals in the body. Get support. You don’t have to do • it all on your own. Talk to those you trust, like a quit buddy, friends or family, or the helpful people at Quitline.

Think heart health,
think Krill Oil
You might know that antioxidants and omega-3 can support cardiovascular health, including blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Now there’s a new type of supplement, more powerful than fish oil, that richly delivers both key nutrients.
K
rill Oil, sourced from the tiny shrimp-like Krill, is a potent source of Omega-3 that’s also packed with antioxidants. What makes Krill Oil so unique however is that it’s easily absorbed by the body, which means its powerful ingredients actually go where they’re meant to.
WHAT GOOD DOES IT DO? The nutrients in Krill Oil help support heart and cardiovascular health as well as joint health. 22

Antioxidants are your body’s way of fighting free radicals – rogue particles that like to attach themselves to healthy cells and tissues throughout the body, causing damage in the process. Omega-3 is a source of two essential fats that support the heart and the body’s immune responses. Our bodies can’t manufacture these fatty acids – we can only get them from certain foods – but when diet is insufficient a supplement can help.
