SKYCITY GRAND HOTEL + EAST DAY SPA + DINE BY PETER GORDON
I do like the lighter mornings the end of daylight saving brings – it seems to make the alarm less unpleasant. But I’m not so sure about the darker evenings. May means Mother’s Day so remember the mummy in your life on Sunday 13th. Brekky in bed is always a winner if you’re in the same household – or brunch out together if you’re not. Or you could even invite a bunch of fellow mums to your place and host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast to raise funds for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. You can host, or attend, a Pink Ribbon Breakfast any time in May, so why not make a separate date and take the opportunity to have another decent brekky lined up. It’s a great way to raise funds for NZBCF and remind ourselves of what we need to be vigilant about when it comes to safeguarding against breast cancer. We’ve got a stunning prize up for grabs this issue, when you complete our reader survey. It’s two wonderful nights in Auckland with breakfast and a degustation dinner with matched wines, plus a massage to boot! Divine. Whatever the next couple of months bring you, enjoy, and catch you next time.

We wish to clarify that it is not recommended young babies be put to sleep on their stomachs. By the time babies reach 6-12 months of age, they may choose to roll onto their tummies to sleep. Pain & inflammation
Act fast to help reduce pain Ever had neck or shoulder pain? Ordinary household tasks can do it, like trimming the hedge, washing the car or cleaning the windows.
P
ain is a warning that shouldn’t be ignored. When muscle pain strikes in the neck or shoulders, it’s best to treat the pain and inflammation as soon as possible. Ignoring the warnings may lead to slower recovery or prolonged pain. Inflammation is the body’s way of protecting an injury. When you suffer

a pulled muscle or tendon, chemicals are released at the injury site, causing swelling and further sensitivity to the body’s pain receptors. Treating the pain and inflammation quickly may help reduce the restriction and discomfort experienced, to help get you moving again sooner.
SIGNS OF INFLAMMATION There are a few tell-tale signs that will help you identify if inflammation is present at the site of injury: • Localised swelling • Heat and a burning sensation • Redness • Stiffness • Loss of function.
VOLTAREN® EMULGEL CAN HELP If inflammation is present, look out for a powerful anti-inflammatory treatment that helps reduce pain and inflammation to assist your body move more freely. Voltaren® Emulgel is a medicated rub for muscle and joint pain associated with acute soft tissue injuries. It contains a powerful anti-inflammatory ingredient, diclofenac, which helps relieve both pain and inflammation by targeting the source of pain and concentrating its action where you need it most. Voltaren® Emulgel’s formulation is cool and easy to rub in so that it is readily absorbed to help relieve aching muscles.
MANAGING YOUR INJURY
Inflammation is the body’s way of protecting an injury… but if left untreated, this inflammation may cause more pain.
Bed rest may not be the best course of action to help speed up your recovery. Speak with your healthcare professional about whether it is ok to undertake gentle activity to help keep you moving. And remember to talk to your pharmacist about Voltaren® Emulgel to see if it is right for you to help reduce pain and inflammation.

Asthma symptoms holding you back?
If you’re one of the many people who think they just have to accept asthma symptoms as part of everyday life, you need to know it doesn’t have to be that way.
M
ost people overestimate their asthma control, thinking the wheezing, coughing and waking in the night, are things they just have to put up with. If you’re using an orange preventer inhaler, but still reaching for your blue reliever in the night, chances are your asthma is not as good as it could be. If this sounds like you, a move to Seretide®, the purple inhaler, could be the answer.
HOW SERETIDE® WORKS Seretide® is a two-in-one inhaler that combines the active ingredient in the orange preventer inhaler with the 6
www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz
active ingredient in the green symptom controller. This combined approach helps control asthma long-term, which means you don’t have to live with the wheezing, coughing and sleepless nights in the first place.1,2
IS SERETIDE® RIGHT FOR YOU? Your doctor is the best person to talk to about your asthma control. The most important thing is to let them know what symptoms you’re experiencing and how often you’re having them. You may not realise you can have symptom-free days for most days of the year with Seretide®, the purple inhaler.3
And if you qualify, Seretide® is fully funded. Just ask your doctor.
PUT SYMPTOMS BEHIND YOU In a major New Zealand asthma study, 81% of people thought their asthma was well controlled, yet three-quarters were using their reliever at least once daily and the remainder were taking at least 3-4 puffs a day. So if there’s one thing the study showed, it’s that most people overestimate their level of asthma control.4 If you’re an asthma sufferer don’t assume that exercise or running around with the kids goes hand-in-hand with laboured breathing, turning ‘enjoyable’ activities into strenuous chores. Asthma treatment has come a long way, and there’s every chance you can put all these symptoms behind you.
IS YOUR ASTHMA UNDER CONTROL? The first step to freeing yourself of symptoms is understanding how well controlled your asthma is right now. Control means5… • No coughing or wheezing • No night-time interruptions • No emergency visits to your doctor or hospital • Participating in activities you enjoy and not having to avoid them • Using a blue reliever inhaler less than two times a week and living life more. There is a simple test to help you find out if your asthma really is under control – visit www.asthmacontrol.co.nz and answer the online questionnaire.
Ask your doctor about Seretide – the purple inhaler

Making babies...
What happens in the first month? Planning for a baby is an exciting time, but what happens to your developing baby in those first few weeks, when most women don’t even know they’re pregnant?
B
efore you do your first pregnancy test, your baby’s vital organs are already forming. By the end of the first four weeks your baby is only about ¼ inch long, yet the baby’s heart, digestive system, backbone and spinal cord are beginning to form. When a woman becomes pregnant, the growing baby places demands on the mother for lots of extra nutrients. But it’s those first few weeks when your baby needs the most dietary support so it’s important to take your pregnancy supplement as soon as you start trying for a baby. One of the nutrients you and your baby need more of is iodine, which is essential for the healthy function of the thyroid. It plays a critical role in the development of your baby’s brain and nervous system during pregnancy. Also, in the first two trimesters, your baby is entirely dependent on maternal thyroid hormone. 8
www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz
ELEVIT NOW CONTAINS IODINE To top its long-standing benefits, Elevit pregnancy supplement now contains 250mcg of iodine, adequately meeting Ministry of Health recommended standards in pregnancy, to assist with healthy brain development. Many women know about the importance of folic acid in early pregnancy – taking it in the first three months is essential in reducing the risk of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. However, the need for additional nutrients doesn’t cease after the first trimester. The body’s demand for certain nutrients, such as folic acid, increases throughout pregnancy, up until your baby reaches maximum foetal growth.
FOLIC ACID FOR EVERY STAGE OF PREGNANCY Healthy cells depend on the continued and proper replication of our DNA, and folate (folic acid) plays an important role in that process. In pregnancy, the rate of folate breakdown in your body actually increases and peaks in the third trimester. So you need to compensate for the accelerated breakdown of folate and ensure your folate needs are met.
OTHER VITAMINS ARE ESSENTIAL TOO The graph shows the significant nutrient increases required in pregnancy recommended by the Ministry of Health and WHO (the pink part of the graph) with folic acid showing the greatest increase, followed by iodine. Elevit with Iodine pregnancy supplement delivers the essential nutrients* both you and your baby will need, meeting the Ministry of Health’s recommended standards. Elevit contains 800mcg of folic acid and is the only pregnancy

supplement clinically proven to reduce the risk of neural tube defects by 92%.1 Elevit with Iodine also contains 60mg of iron to help combat fatigue and prevent dietary iron deficiency, and 250mcg of iodine to assist with baby’s healthy brain development. It also contains zinc, vitamin C, calcium, B6, B12 and other essential nutrients – all in a once-daily tablet.
TAKE ELEVIT WITH IODINE DAILY To help prevent neural tube defects, Elevit with Iodine should be taken daily as soon as you start trying for a baby and continued throughout pregnancy to help meet both yours and baby’s ongoing needs.

Heartburn?
Don’t put up with it Heartburn starts with stomach acid. When we produce too much stomach acid, the excess acid can flow into the food pipe causing a burning pain in the chest.
UNDERSTANDING HEARTBURN
I
f the last thing you want to be worried about is heartburn and acid reflux, you need to know there is a simple answer – a treatment that targets the cause of heartburn, stopping it in its tracks so you can get on with enjoying life. For frequent heartburn sufferers Losec Extra could free you from heartburn for up to three months, and you don’t need a prescription to get it. 10
www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz
If you suffer from recurring heartburn, it might be because you’re only addressing the symptoms, not the cause. Heartburn and acid reflux occurs when acid from the stomach flows up into the food pipe (oesophagus), causing a burning pain in the chest and, in some cases, a sour acid taste in the mouth. Too much stomach acid is usually to blame, and so to tackle the problem effectively you may need to limit the amount of acid your stomach produces in the first place.
COMMON DIETARY TRIGGERS Heartburn can be triggered by: • Spicy or fatty food • Chocolate or sweets • Caffeinated or fizzy drinks • Alcohol • Eating large portions and eating before bedtime.
CAUSES OF HEARTBURN The stomach uses acid to sterilise food and protect against infection. Specialised cells in your stomach lining produce this acid and pump it into the stomach. If too many of these pumps produce acid at the same time, it can result in excess stomach acid. Many things can trigger excess acid production – certain foods and drinks, having a busy lifestyle and specific medical conditions.
regulate the production of stomach acid. That’s why millions of people worldwide use Losec®, shown to be twice as effective as antacids in the relief of heartburn and reflux.
TREAT THE ROOT CAUSE Unlike antacids that only temporarily relieve the symptoms of heartburn/reflux, Losec regulates the amount of acid your stomach produces, so that symptoms don’t have the chance to rear their head at all. Losec Extra (omeprazole 20mg) may provide up to three months’ relief when taken for two weeks. It’s now available from your pharmacy – without prescription – making it easier to get lasting freedom from the nagging pain of heartburn.
GET LASTING RELIEF Watching what you eat, reducing excess weight, stopping smoking and avoiding stressful situations can all help reduce heartburn or reflux. But to stop heartburn or reflux at its source, you may need to
Losec treats the problem at its source, regulating the amount of acid your stomach produces.

Losec® and Losec® Extra are used for the relief of reflux-like symptoms, heartburn or regurgitation for people aged 18 years or older. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist see your pharmacist. Bayer New Zealand Limited, Auckland. TAPS NA5679

If quitting came down to willpower alone, probably everyone would have quit by now.
Finding it hard to stop smoking? Now there’s an easy way to learn how
Q
I’m trying to quit, but it’s hard work and I have so many questions. Where can I get the answers I need? Most people have lots of questions about the different options to help them quit, what to expect when they quit, and how they will feel physically. The people at Pfizer, the makers of Champix®, know how hard it is too. They have a series of short videos at www.champix.co.nz where you can find answers to many of your frequently asked questions.
Q
Why should I go to Champix.co.nz? If you are finding it hard to stop smoking then you may be ready to learn about a different approach. Champix. co.nz has 12 short video features arranged around preparing to stop, support to stop and staying smokefree. 12
www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz
Q
Will the website help me understand why it’s so hard to quit? Yes. One of the features explains how nicotine from smoking causes the release of a “feel good” chemical in the brain. The problem is its only temporary, so to get it back you have to have another smoke, and another…. until the only way to feel normal is with nicotine constantly in your system.
Q
Is this why going cold turkey can be hard? Yes. At www.champix.co.nz there is another feature talking about why trying to quit with no support is difficult. Many people suffer nicotine withdrawal symptoms which can last more than 10 weeks including the desire to smoke, headaches, sleepless nights, feeling down or irritability. This is one
of the reasons why only around 5% of smokers who try to quit by going cold turkey are successful after a year.
Q
So, what are the options? Go to www.champix.co.nz where you can learn more about the options. There is a feature explaining why combining willpower with medication improves your chances of quitting.
Q
Q Q
What is Champix and does it work? Champix is a medication that can help you stop smoking. It is also quite different to gum or patch-based treatments you may have tried. It is a tablet you take twice a day for at least 12 weeks. By the end of the 12-week Champix programme, you’re four times more likely to have given up, than if you’d taken no medication. At www.champix.co.nz there’s lots more information on this.
How does Champix work? Champix works in two ways. It reduces withdrawal symptoms and blocks the effect of nicotine, so if you do smoke, you probably won’t enjoy it as much. At www.champix.co.nz you can find out more. Are there side effects? Everyone is different, so talk to your doctor about the potential side effects of Champix. Two common ones are nausea and difficulty sleeping. Some people may experience side effects such as mood changes and it isn’t known if they occur as a result of quitting or taking Champix.
Q
What will it cost? If you’re ready to quit now, talk to your doctor about Champix. You may be eligible to have the entire 12-week course funded. Normal doctors’ fees and pharmacy dispensing fees apply.
If you want to know more about Champix go to www.champix.co.nz
Ask your doctor about Champix® And find out more at www.champix.co.nz Champix (varenicline) 0.5 mg & 1 mg Tablets. Champix (varenicline) is a prescription medicine that helps adults stop smoking. Champix is fully funded under special authority. A pharmacy charge and normal doctor’s fees apply. Do not take Champix if you are allergic to varenicline or any other tablet ingredients. Tell your doctor if you have ever had depression, other mental health problems, kidney problems, have a history of repeated fits, are pregnant, intend to become pregnant or are breastfeeding. Some people have had changes in behaviour, mood or thinking including self-harm or harming others. If you or your family notice changes in your behaviour, mood or thinking, stop taking Champix and see your doctor. Some people have had allergic reactions to Champix that can be life threatening. If you get swelling of the face, mouth, throat or a skin rash, stop taking Champix and see your doctor immediately. There have been reports of heart attack and strokes in some people taking Champix. Heart attacks and strokes can also be caused by smoking. If you have any of these conditions tell your doctor. Common side effects include nausea, constipation, flatulence, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, difficulty in sleeping and abnormal dreams. If you have other side effects see your doctor. Always read the label and use as directed. Consult your doctor to see if Champix is right for you. Contains varenicline 0.5 mg or 1 mg. D
ata last year from the Auckland Breast Cancer Register, funded by the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, shows women who have their cancer picked up by screening mammogram have a 95% chance of surviving to five years. This compares to 73% survival to five years in women whose cancer is diagnosed through feeling a lump.

To reduce your risk of breast cancer you can… • Maintain a healthy body weight • Eat a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables and low in red and processed meats • Exercise for at least 30 minutes, three to five times a week • Limit alcohol intake to an average of one or two a day, with at least two alcohol-free days every week • Stop smoking • Manage stress levels.
BREAST AWARENESS FROM 20
MAMMOGRAMS FROM 40
From the age of 20 get to know how your breasts look and feel, so you can quickly recognise any changes: • A new lump or thickening, especially if it is only in one breast • A change in breast shape or size • A pain in the breast that is unusual • Puckering or dimpling of the skin of the breast • Reddening or a rash • A nipple that is turned-in or has discharge that occurs without squeezing. See your doctor promptly with any of these changes.
• The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation recommends women have annual mammograms from age 40 and mammograms every two years from age 50 onwards. • BreastScreen Aotearoa offers free screening mammograms to women aged 45-69.
YOU CAN HELP WITH A PINK RIBBON BREAKFAST All around New Zealand women, men, clubs and groups are starting the day with Pink Ribbon Breakfasts to raise funds for the The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. These funds are used to improve awareness and fund programmes that support women with breast cancer in the community. Why not organise one with your friends? Or go along to one in your area. To find out more about holding a Pink Ribbon Breakfast or to find one in your area, visit www.pinkribbonbreakfast.co.nz
NEW ZEALAND BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION AMBASSADOR Family Health Diary’s Jude Dobson is an ambassador for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. As a former nurse, she understands why screening is so important but stresses “we still have a long way to go to save women’s lives”. Jude supports the Breast Cancer Foundation’s determined focus on encouraging women to go for mammograms. And she has good reason to back up her support. “We simply want to prevent women from dying from this disease…. And screening is the best first step.”

Put your best
foot forward Pain in your knee, ankle, heel or lower back? Wondering what the cause is? You might want to check your foot alignment.
P
oor alignment of the feet not only affects your posture, but can cause aches and pains in other parts of the body. Around 70% of people suffer from excess pronation, which is when the foot rolls inwards when walking. It happens because our feet, which were designed to walk barefoot on soft, natural surfaces like soil and sand, take
24
www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz
a daily pounding on unnatural, hard and flat surfaces including footwear. This causes the feet to roll over (to gain ground contact) and the arches to flatten. Like the foundation of a tall building, problems in the feet can have far-reaching effects throughout the body, leading to pain affecting not just the feet, but the heel, knee, lower back and legs.
HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR FEET? Most people don’t realise that their feet pronate, or associate the problem with poor posture and other body ailments. Yet the difference between good and poor foot alignment is obvious once you use a good orthotic. An orthotic is a corrective insole that realigns the foot to a neutral position.
The image above shows how pronated feet can be corrected by simply using an orthotic insole (as shown with the right foot).
SCHOLL ORTHAHEEL FEATURES & BENEFITS • Podiatrist designed and recommended • Designed to help cushion the foot and correct over-pronation • Unique built-in 4 degrees rear foot angle to control excess pronation and restore the foot to its neutral position Inserts provide relief from common • causes of heel and foot pain, knee pain, aching legs and back pain.
Available from pharmacies and speciality footwear stores www.schollorthaheel.co.nz

DEPRESSION
If your treatment is working, why change? If you have been prescribed Efexor-XR® (venlafaxine) for the treatment of major depression, it’s important to know that if you are offered an alternate brand you don’t have to change.
E
fexor-XR remains fully funded at no extra cost to you until at least April 2017. You just need to let your doctor know that you want to stay with Efexor-XR, and ask your pharmacist for it by name. Efexor-XR has helped thousands of New Zealanders living with depression.1 Not only is Efexor-XR used in the treatment and prevention of relapse of depression, but it is also prescribed for a range of mood disorders including generalised anxiety, social anxiety and panic disorder.2 26
www.familyhealthdiary.co.nz
DUAL ACTION Efexor-XR’s dual-action approach to depression may help resolve a broad range of depression symptoms like constant sadness, trouble sleeping or low energy. Resolving these symptoms can be the first step to helping you control your depression so you can feel like your old self again.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF TREATMENT? In treating depression, the goal is more than just to feel better – you want to
try and eliminate all your depression symptoms and to keep them from coming back. Doctors call this the remission of symptoms and people who reach remission of symptoms are less likely to have their symptoms return. No two people have the same symptoms. Remission for you could mean having days without feelings of
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW YOUR DOCTOR’S ADVICE One of the most important things to remember is to take your medication as prescribed, and stay on it for as long as your doctor advises. That’s because it’s not uncommon for depression symptoms to return. For some, the symptoms of depression seem to disappear, or improve to the point where they no longer seem to interfere with your life. If this happens to you, don’t be tempted to stop taking your medication, unless your doctor advises it, because sometimes these symptoms come back. Doctors call this a relapse, and if this occurs it is usually within six months of starting treatment. Symptoms can also return long after the depression seems to have disappeared. This new episode of depression is called a recurrence. Evidence suggests that a recurrence can make it more likely that symptoms will continue to return in the future.3 If your treatment is Efexor-XR your doctor will know the right dosage and how long you need to stay on Efexor-XR to get the best results.
constant sadness, or the return of your normal sleeping and eating habits. It could also mean having energy again for your favourite activities and renewed interest in the things you used to love doing. You can find more information about fully-funded Efexor-XR on our website www.pfizer.co.nz
Talk to your doctor to see if EFEXOR-XR is right for you And ask your Pharmacist for Efexor-XR by name

Bladder problems?
Men and women are not the same Men and women are a bit like apples and pears… They’re both fruit but quite different, especially when it comes to shape.
M
en and women come in different shapes and sizes, so it makes sense that when it comes to bladder control problems, men and women need different protection with products designed specifically for the male and female body. Bladder control is taken for granted by most people. But for some, bladder control difficulties mean their bladder becomes the boss, affecting their 28

IS IT A COLD OR FLU? It can be hard to tell the difference between a cold and flu, but there are key differences. The common cold is a viral infection of the nose, throat and nasal sinuses characterised by inflammation, discharge and nasal congestion. Symptoms to look for include a sore throat, runny nose, postnasal drip, watery eyes, nasal stuffiness and a cough. A child with a cold may have a slight fever, but fever with a cold is unusual in adults.1 The flu is a viral infection of the air passages and lungs, caused by a different set of viruses to a cold. In addition to symptoms of a cold, a person suffering from the flu will also have muscular aches and pains, followed by a sudden onset of chills and fever developing over a 24-hour period. A severe headache is common, followed by a sore throat, a dry cough, sore or inflamed eyes and a general feeling of listlessness. Nausea and vomiting may occur in children.1
