~From the Desk of the Director~ Dear Friends: Welcome back! We hope you have had a fantastic summer thus far, enjoyed some relaxing times, stayed cool, and you are ready to join us again as we are gearing up for our first Parent Education Meeting to be held on September 12, 2011. All of our support groups continued to meet throughout the summer. The ABC Support Group decided to learn all about IEPs (Individualized Education Plans) and IEP notebooks this summer. Amy Perry, ASNC‟s Parent Advocate, presented three workshops helping parents understand IEPs and preparing them for the new school year. A very special “Thank You” goes out to Mrs. Nancy Williams who offered her home to continue the HFA Support Group throughout the summer. We appreciate your willingness to help and make a difference, Nancy! Please find dates/times/locations of all upcoming support group meetings in the left columns on pages (1) and (2) of this newsletter. Camp Sunshine, a five week summer developmental day program for children, adolescents, and young adults diagnosed with autism was held at Loyd Auman Elementary School from June 27, 2011 through July 29, 2011. 40 campers had fun times bowling, skating, swimming, and continuing their academic growth during this most exciting time. We are grateful to Cumberland County Schools who continue to support our camp by providing the necessary physical space and by providing our campers with free lunch at camp. Thank you also to our great staff and the many volunteers who make Camp Sunshine the successful program is has been for many years! Spring 2011 presented us with serious concerns about future funding of our organization. At times, we faced possible closure. However, we are thrilled to announce that the ASCC is funded for fiscal year 2011/2012, and all services that have been provided in the past year will be provided again this year. Thank you all for sending emails, making phone calls, and visiting our legislators in Raleigh. Your special stories made a significant difference in the budget decisions made by our funders. We look forward to a providing enriching programs and services to you. Please let us know how we can make a difference in the lives of your families. You can reach us at (910) 826-3004/3005.
~Support Parents Needed~ Are you a parent of a child diagnosed with autism? Would you like to provide emotional support to parents who are new to the ASCC family? If so, please call (910) 826-3004/3005 to learn more about this rewarding program. Thank you for your consideration.
