DNA TERMINOLOGY
What is a Brangus Bundle?
A Brangus Bundle consists of the following tests:
100K SNP
This is the extraction of the genomic data from the animal
Parent Verification
When a parent/s of an animal being tested have DNA profiles Parent Verification can be reported
Coat Colour
This tests identifies what coat colour genes the animal is carrying Poll
This tests identifies what Poll/Horn genes the animal is carrying
Tenderness
This test gives the animal a 1-10 score for the tenderness genes the animal is carrying
What is Parent Verification?
While mating dates and visual mothering up are useful tools in determining the parents of an animal, DNA Parent Verification is the only way to confirm the parentage.
DNA Parent Verification is a tool which should be relied on heavily by breeders who are selling animals for breeding purposes and for anyone who wants to have accurate pedigree records.
When the Sire and/or the Dam of animal has a DNA profile Parent Verification can be reported.
The lab compares the DNA of the calf to the DNA of the Sires and/or Dams nominated.
The lab is then able to verify if an animal is the Sire or Dam.
The lab is unable to ‘find’ the Sire of an animal using DNA, the lab can only compare the DNA of the calf to the DNA of the Sires or Dams nominated by the breeder at the time of testing.
The lab is unable to verify the Sire and Dam of an animal without being able to directly compare the calf to the Sire or Dam e.g. The lab cannot confirm the Sire of a calf by comparing it to another calf by the same Sire.
Parent Verification Results
Qualified
If qualified is shown next to a Sire or Dam it is indicating the the lab has confirmed that this is the parent
Excluded
If shown next to a Sire or Dam it is indicating the the lab has confirmed that this is not the parent
If you have tested potential parents and the lab results qualify a different parent to the one listed on the database the office will automatically process the pedigree change.

N – Non-Carrier
DNA analysis is consistent with the subject NOT carrying the mutation tested
C – Carrier
DNA analysis is consistent with the subject CARRYING the mutation tested

MEMBERSHIP
The Australian Brangus Cattle Association Ltd offers three membership categories to new members. The membership categories are:
Full Membership
Ideal for those who wish to participate in breeding quality registered Brangus & Ultra animals and record their pedigree.
Full members are eligible to sell stock at ABCA sales, participate in Brangus Group BREEDPLAN, vote at ABCA meetings and in elections as well as receive the Spring and Autumn magazine, information regarding shows, sales and activities organised by ABCA.
Each Full member is required to record a prefix, brand and ID for their herd, which will be unique to their membership. All animals registered by that member will use the prefix and ID in their identification.
Commercial Membership
Designed for people with an interest in the Brangus breed that do not wish to register or record cattle.
Commercial members receive all ABCA publications (including the Spring and Autumn magazine), utilise ABCA marketing initiatives and can list cattle for sale on the Brangus Australia website.
Commercial members may record their prefix, brand, ID and record performance pedigree animals with the ABCA. Commercial members may record and can also performance test their cattle through Brangus BREEDPLAN. Commercial members cannot register animals and cannot vote.
Youth Membership
Youth membership is a restricted membership category to enable youth to commence breeding Brangus and/or participate in self-development programs.
Youth membership shall be accepted up to the age of 25 years old. Youth members who wish to register cattle will be required to record prefix, brand and ID for their herd.
Life Membership
The Directors of the Australian Brangus Cattle Association Ltd. may bestow Life membership upon a member that has made an outstanding contribution to the breed.
More information on breeding Brangus or joining the Brangus Association can be obtained at brangus.com.au or you can call the office on 02 5775 9900 and an enquiry kit with an application form will be sent to you.

BREEDPLAN
BREEDPLAN EBVs and selection indexes remove the effects of non-genetic factors (e.g. feeding regimes, animal age) from what is seen and measured to provide the best measure of an animal’s genetic merit. BREEDPLAN information should always be used in conjunction with other selection criteria, including visual assessment.
A Best Practice Guide to selecting your next Brangus Sire
A BREEDPLAN Guide to Animal Selection allows you to select the best genetics for your herd in four easy steps:
1. Identify the Brangus selection index relevant to you.
• Export Steer - A selection index for where some daughters are retained as replacements and steers finished. Targets live export markets.
• Domestic Steer - A selection index for where some daughters are retained as replacements and steers finished. Targets the domestic trade.
2. Rank animals using the chosen selection index.
3. Consider the individual EBVs of importance.
4. Consider other traits of importance (e.g. visual assessment).
The majority of these steps can be undertaken online, allowing you to generate a shortlist of bulls for potential purchase ahead of sale day.
BRANGUS BREEDPLAN
A BREEDPLAN Guide to Interpreting EBVs outlines how to assess and compare the genetic merit of animals. Please note that only EBVs from the same BREEDPLAN analysis can be directly compared. The Australian Brangus Cattle Association publishes the following BREEDPLAN EBVs:
Gestation Length (days): Bulls with lower (or more negative) GL EBVs are expected to produce progeny with shorter gestation lengths. Such progeny are also expected to be easier calving.
Birth Weight (kg): Bulls with lower, less positive BWt EBVs are expected to produce progeny that are lighter at birth, with an associated lower risk of calving difficulty.
This EBV is particularly important when selecting sires where there is an increased risk of calving difficulty (e.g. heifers, cross-breeding).
200, 400 & 600 Day Weight EBVs (kg): Bulls with larger (or more positive) Weight EBVs are expected to produce progeny that grow faster to 200, 400 & 600 days of age, respectively. The Weight EBV of particular importance will depend on the target market e.g. vealer (200 D), yearling (400 D) or heavy steer (600 D).
Mature Cow Weight (kg): Bulls with larger (or more positive) MCW EBVs are expected to produce daughters with higher mature cow weights and increased feed requirements. More moderate MCW EBVs are generally more favourable in self replacing or maternal production systems.
Milk (kg): Bulls with higher (or more positive) Milk EBVs are expected to produce daughters with more maternal ability leading to higher 200 day weights in their progeny. Selection for moderate Milk EBVs may be preferable in harsher environments as cows with higher Milk EBVs can have impaired fertility and decreased survival under such conditions.
Scrotal Size (cm): Bulls with larger (or more positive)
SS EBVs indicate better semen quality and quantity. Daughters are expected to be more fertile and reach puberty at an earlier age.
Carcase Weight (kg): Bulls with larger (or more positive) CWt EBVs are expected to produce progeny with heavier carcase weights.
Eye Muscle Area (sq. cm): Bulls with a higher (or more positive) EMA EBV are expected to produce progeny with better muscling.
Rib and Rump Fat EBVs (mm): Bulls with higher (or more positive) Rib & Rump Fat EBVs are expected to produce fatter progeny, relative to carcase weight. The desire for more or less fat will depend on the finishing ability of your animals.
Retail Beef Yield (%): Bulls with higher (or more positive) RBY EBVs are expected to produce progeny with higher yielding carcases.
Intramuscular Fat (%): Bulls with higher (or more positive) IMF EBVs are expected to produce progeny with more marbling and better grading scores (e.g. MSA).

BRANGUS SELECTION INDEX
Selection Indexes assist beef producers to make selection decisions that take into account the relevant growth, carcase, fertility and efficiency attributes of each animal to identify candidates whose progeny will be the most profitable for a particular commercial enterprise.
Selection indexes provide an overall indication of an animal’s genetic value for profit in a specific production system/target market and are calculated based on weightings placed on individual traits that are deemed to be important for that production system.
The weightings are calculated using BreedObject software that analyses all sources of costs and income for the production system represented by each selection index.
As such, selection indexes account for both sides of the profit equation and reflect the short and long term profit possible through selection of superior genetics.
For example, short term profit can be generated by a bull through the sale of his progeny, and the longer term profit generated by his daughters in a selfreplacing cow herd.
Best Practice Guide to Animal Selection Using Brangus Selection Indexes
Incorporating selection index information into breeding decisions takes the hard work out of trying to decide how much emphasis you need to put on individual EBVs when determining which animals you want to retain in your herd or purchase. The recommended strategy for selecting animals is to complete the following steps:
1. Identify the selection index of most relevance to your or your client’s breeding objectives. This decision should be aided by the index descriptions at the end of this document.
2. Rank animals on the chosen selection index. This can be done via the web search facility available for the breed.
3. Consider the individual BREEDPLAN EBVs of importance. All breed level selection indexes are designed for the average of the production system specified in their description. This means that individual farm environments and management choices may require that their own thresholds are applied. For example, if looking for a bull to use over heifers, particular attention should be paid to Calving Ease and Birth Weight EBVs.
4. Consider other traits of importance. Structure, fertility (e.g. BULLCHECKTM), temperament, genetic conditions and pedigree are all important additional considerations.
Available Brangus Selection Indexes
The Australian Brangus Cattle Association Ltd. currently reports two different selection indexes.
These are the:
• Domestic Steer Index
• Export Steer Index
Each selection index is reported in units of net profitability per cow mated ($), and relates to a self replacing Brangus herd. In addition, each selection index targets the following specifications:
Domestic Steer Index
• Self-replacing commercial herd targeting the domestic trade.
• Temperate environment.
• Selected heifers are retained for breeding so maternal traits are important.
• Steer progeny are pasture grown and finished on grain for 75 days.
• Steers target 490 kg live weight (265 kg HSCW & 10 mm P8 fat depth) at 15 months of age.
Export Steer Index
• Self-replacing commercial herd targeting the export trade.
• Tropical environment.
• Selected heifers are retained for breeding so maternal traits are important.
• Steer progeny are pasture grown and finished on grain for 75 days.
• Steers target 620 kg live weight (325 kg HSCW & 16 mm P8 fat depth) at 30 months of age.

STUD STOCK - AUCTION TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SALE
All bids shall be treated as offers made upon the following Terms and Conditions of Sale and all persons present are admitted to attend the sale on the basis that they have notice of these Terms and Conditions.
1. The highest bidder shall, subject to Condition 2, be the purchaser provided that the vendor reserves the right to bid either by himself or through his agent or auctioneer and should any dispute arise among the bidders for any lot, during or immediately after sale of the lot, it shall be settled at the auctioneers absolute discretion who may, should one of the disputants advance, put the lot or lots up again. The bidding from time to time shall be regulated by the auctioneer and no bid shall be retracted.
(a) All Sales will be conducted on the basis that the bid price will be exclusive of Goods & Services Tax (GST). GST will be added to the bid price after the fall of the hammer for those sales subject to GST.
2. The sale will be conducted on a “Sale” or “No Sale” basis whereby the lot for sale shall be knocked down to the highest bidder, but the sale will be subject to the acceptance of the highest bid by the vendor who will immediately after the fall of the hammer declare “Sale” or “No Sale”. Should the vendor reject the bid of the highest bidder such bidder will have the right of first refusal of the lot at the vendor’s nominated price for one hour after the lot has been passed out of the ring on the Terms and Conditions herein set forth in so far as they shall apply.
3. The details of the purchaser, the purchase price and the lot sold as recorded by the sale clerk for and on behalf of the auctioneer shall be equally binding on both purchaser and vendor.
4. The auctioneer expressly reserves the right, without giving any reason therefor, to:-
(a) Refuse to acknowledge any bid;
(b) Withdraw any lot or lots before or during the sale;
(c) Exclude any person from the auction venue should it think fit.
5. Each lot in all cases shall be at the risk and expense of the purchaser, upon acceptance of his bid by the vendor or upon acceptance of the highest bidder’s offer by the vendor whichever shall be the earlier.
6. Except as expressly provided in these Terms and Conditions of Sale no guarantee or warranty shall be given in respect of any lot sold under these Conditions as to pedigree, sex, age, breeding condition or otherwise howsoever, and no guarantee, warranty or condition whatsoever shall be implied from any affirmation made before or at the time of the sale, or from any circumstances of the sale, but in all cases where a guarantee is intended the same shall attach and be enforceable only if reduced to writing before delivery of the lot and signed by the vendor or by the auctioneer acting as agent for the vendor, and the absence of such writing shall be conclusive evidence in case of dispute that no guarantee warranty or condition whatsoever was given or implied.
7. In the event of any dispute in respect to the sale of any lot:-
(i) The purchaser shall nevertheless be obliged to pay to the auctioneer the full purchase price and any other moneys or interest payable by the purchaser in accordance with these terms and conditions.
(ii) The vendor and the purchaser shall resolve the dispute between themselves;
(iii) The auctioneer shall have no liability or responsibility in regard to the dispute; and (iv) No lot shall be returned to the auctioneer and the purchaser shall indemnify the auctioneer for all costs, expenses and damages which the auctioneer is put to or incurs by reason of the purchaser so doing.
8. The name of the vendor for whom the auctioneer acts is acknowledged to have been furnished to purchasers prior to sale and further particulars will in all cases be furnished to a purchaser if required. In the case of any dispute the remedy of the purchaser shall be against the vendor only and in no case or under any circumstances against the auctioneer who is to be regarded for all intents and purposes as agent for a disclosed principal.
9. (a) PAYMENT - Unless prior credit arrangements have been made in writing with the auctioneer the full purchase price for each lot shall be due and payable to the auctioneer in cash upon acceptance of the highest bid or the highest bidder’s offer by the vendor and prior to delivery. Notwithstanding that delivery is given to or possession obtained by the purchaser or his representative prior to the payment of the purchase money in full the property in any lot which is sold shall not pass to the purchaser until the full purchase price and all cheques, promissory notes, bills of exchange, acceptance orders or drafts given in connection with such payment have been paid and liquidated, and until property shall pass, the purchaser shall hold such lot as bailee, provided that in all cases should such payment not have been made and liquidated within 14 days of the date of the sale the auctioneer reserves the right to:-
(i) Rescind the contract on behalf of the vendor and repossess and resell any lot;
(ii) Recover from the purchaser interest upon the purchase price at a rate per annum which aggregates the 90 day Bill Rate plus two percentum. For the purposes of this condition “the 90 day Bill Rate” is the rate published regularly in the Australian Financial Review, expressed as a percentage per annum. If at any time the Financial Review ceases to publish a 90 day Bill Rate, the auctioneer shall determine and advise the purchaser of the interest rate to apply for the purpose of this condition.
(b) The auctioneer is selling as the del credere agent of the vendor and the full purchase price of any lot sold shall be payable by the purchaser to the auctioneer and be fully recoverable by the auctioneer in its own name.
10. If the purchaser shall neglect or fail to comply with any of the within conditions, any lot purchased by him may be immediately resold by public auction or private contract, with or without notice, at the risk of the former purchaser, who will be held responsible for all loss and expenses arising out of such resale, and shall not participate in any profit accruing therefrom.
11. Any vendor or purchaser removing the sale number from any lot after it has been sold will fully indemnify all affected parties for any loss, costs or damage should the lot be wrongly delivered.
12. The purchasers, if more than one, shall be jointly and severally bound by these Terms and Conditions, and shall jointly and severally carry out and perform same.
13. Any person who advances a bid on a lot shall do so on the expressed condition and understanding that should that person’s bid be the highest bid and such bid is accepted by the vendor, then that person will be held personally liable for the price so agreed upon, regardless of the fact that that person may be acting on behalf of another party, either disclosed or undisclosed to the vendor or the auctioneer, provided however, that this Condition shall not in any way negate the vendor’s right to claim against any principal and in such case the bidder’s liability shall be construed to be by way of guarantee.
14. The auctioneer may, should it think fit, make arrangements on a purchaser’s behalf for the feeding, watering, trucking, shipping of and general attendance to any lot after sale but no responsibility will be accepted by the auctioneer and all such service will be at the purchaser’s risk and expense.
15. No lot will be delivered until the sales invoice has been checked and signed by the purchaser or his duly authorised representative.
16. (a) Each lot in all cases shall be sold with all faults, if any, and excepting those conditions and warranties implied by the Trade Practices Act or any applicable State legislation which cannot be contractually excluded and excepting conditions and warranties expressly contained in these Terms and Conditions of Sale, any express or implied condition, statement or warranty, statutory or otherwise, is hereby excluded. The auctioneer is not liable in respect of any error, misdescription or omission in any particulars appearing or stated regarding the descriptions or pedigrees of any lot offered for sale and no such error, misdescription or omission shall entitle the purchaser to annul the sale or reject the lot or claim any compensation, damage or abatement in price.
(b) Each lot will be sold subject to passing all veterinary tests required by the law of the State or Country to which the purchaser intends to transport that particular lot, such tests to be undertaken at the purchaser’s expense and concluded immediately following the sale. In the event of a lot failing to pass these tests, the sale shall be null and void, any purchase moneys paid by the purchaser shall be refunded and property in the lot shall revert to or remain with the vendor.
