BRANKSOME HALL
PRINCIPAL & BOARD CHAIR MESSAGE
The 2018–19 school year marked a milestone in Branksome Hall’s history as we launched our journey to formally select and define our school’s core values.
These values — sense of community, inclusiveness, creativity and making a difference — are the foundation of everything we do at Branksome Hall and how we go about doing it. They guide and support our mission and vision, reflecting our individual and collective beliefs, as well as our broader aspirations as a school community. On first glance, one might think the four values are new concepts for Branksome Hall. Yet, nothing could be further from the truth. A sense of community, inclusiveness, creativity and making a difference have always been on display on Elm Avenue. Few have embodied our values more than the hundreds of generous Branksome parents, alums, employees, past parents, grandparents, students and other friends who support us each year. Our community members bring Branksome Hall’s values to life through their gifts, leaving an indelible impression on our school and the more than 900 students who walk our halls every day. As you read through this Donor and Giving Report, we hope you are reminded of the important role we all play in making Branksome the school it is today: one with a strong sense of community, where everyone feels included, where creativity flourishes at every turn and where we all are empowered to make a difference. Thank you for making your mark on Branksome Hall. We’re very grateful.

DONATION IMPACT
Our community’s support impacts every aspect of life at Branksome Hall. The following represent just some of the ways philanthropy made a positive mark at the school in 2018-19.

BRANKSOME HALL
Middle School Innovation Hub
ARTS AND ATHLETICS
Thanks to support from donors, the Junior School Makerspace and Senior School’s Senst Family STEAM Studio have been joined by a new Middle School Innovation Hub (iHub), providing students seamless access to world-class innovation spaces across all grade levels. In addition to providing much-needed new space for curricular and co-curricular innovation activities (such as 3D printing and Virtual Reality experiences), the iHub will also serve as the inaugural home of Noodle, Branksome’s first-of-its-kind accelerator program for student entrepreneurs.
Study Abroad and Global Engagement Opportunities
Community members helped students with demonstrated need participate in life-changing study abroad and global engagement opportunities, including the annual Grade 9 BHX exchange with Branksome Hall Asia and service learning experience at the Queenstown Get Ahead Project School (QGAP) in South Africa.
Donor support provided much-needed new resources for Branksome’s Arts and Athletics programs, including new musical instruments, Middle School drama and dance costumes, as well as new rowing sculls. In addition, new investments were made in the Middle School Fitness Centre, including additional machines gifted directly by supporters.
JUNIOR SCHOOL CLASSROOMS OF TOMORROW
Thanks to donor support of the Principal’s Fund, two Grade 6 classrooms have been transformed into innovative “Classrooms of Tomorrow.” The reimagined facilities follow in the footsteps of previously renovated Grade 4 and Grade 5 spaces, meaning that all classrooms on the Junior School’s first floor have now been modernized. These spaces are flexible learning environments that reflect best practices in 21st century educational design. Students and faculty members are especially pleased by the classrooms’ seamless technology incorporation — allowing for greater collaboration, as well as easier use of diverse learning media.
Student Financial Assistance FACULTY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Branksome provided more than $1 million in student financial assistance in 2018-19 — opening Branksome’s doors to 71 students of diverse backgrounds.
Good teachers are good learners. In 2018-19, donors helped support a wide range of professional development activities for Branksome faculty members to help them stay current on best practices in teaching and student support. Specific professional development opportunities funded include our year-long partnership with Dr. Catherine Steiner-Adair on Social Emotional Learning, our work addressing students’ stress and anxiety with Dr. Lisa Damour, as well as faculty members’ participation in SingularityU’s Canada Summit on the transformative impact of technology. 2018–19 DONOR AND GIVING REPORT

“ I loved Branksome. I made many good friends there and the school was a big part of my life. I have enjoyed watching the school mature and evolve during my lifetime, and I am happy to have been able to help financially. I wanted to do something meaningful for Branksome, and this bequest to create an endowment fund will ensure that Branksome students will continue to benefit for years to come.” THE LATE ELSPETH ABBEY JOHNSON’43

The 10 Elm Society honours all those who have included a gift to Branksome Hall in their estate planning. Legacy giving has been, and continues to be, an important philanthropic tradition at our school — helping to make Branksome Hall what it is today. We acknowledge and thank members of the 10 Elm Society, including those who choose to remain anonymous. We are grateful to them for their commitment to ensuring new generations of Branksome Hall students receive a remarkable educational experience.

“ I support Branksome because of the enormous impact it has had on my life and career. Upon entering Grade 1 in 1952, the concept of ‘Women’s Empowerment’ was unheard of. Most women did not dream of careers, and instead looked forward to marriage and raising a family. Branksome prepared us for more than that, empowering us and opening our minds to any field that we wanted to strive for, including those male bastions of mathematics and science. For this reason, I want to help Branksome to continue to support young women of the future in STEM programs at university.” DR. FRANCES A. SHEPHERD’64 OC, OONT, MD, FRCPC, FASCO, LLD (HON)

BRANKSOME HALL FOUNDATION
The Branksome Hall Foundation was established to ensure the long-term fiscal soundness of Branksome Hall. The Foundation is governed by an independent Board of Trustees who are all longstanding school leaders. They are tasked with the perpetual preservation and stewardship of the Foundation’s assets, and are advised by an experienced investment team. Many leadership donors have chosen to establish named funds with the Foundation. These funds support important program areas and priority projects at the school. We are grateful to these community members for their generosity. The value of the Foundation’s holdings stood at $22,548,171 at its fiscal year end on June 30, 2019.

Thank you to Mary LESSLIE Hallward’74 and Daniel Sullivan for their incredible dedication and service to the Foundation.
New Funds Established in 2018-19 THE CLASS OF 2019 ENDOWED FUND
For the third consecutive year, graduating students and their parents came together to establish a new endowed bursary fund in their name. A record 98 per cent of Class of 2019 students and 76 per cent of their families contributed to the fund, raising a total of $74,094. The inaugural Class of 2019 Bursary will be awarded to a deserving student in the 2020-21 school year and, as per the wishes of the class, will be awarded with preference to students from marginalized backgrounds and/or those who have overcome extraordinary socioeconomic barriers during their lives. THE MARY LESSLIE HALLWARD’74 INNOVATION AWARDS FUND
Mary LESSLIE Hallward’74 established The Mary LESSLIE Hallward’74 Innovation Awards Fund in 2018. Her fund joins with that previously established in Mary’s honour by several Branksome community members on the occasion of her retirement as chair of the Branksome Hall Foundation. Together, the two funds will support The Mary LESSLIE Hallward’74 Innovation Awards which will award seed funding to the top three teams participating in Noodle
— Branksome Hall’s landmark new accelerator program. The top award of $10,000 will be the largest student prize in Branksome Hall history. THE DR. FRANCES A. SHEPHERD’64 ENDOWED FUND
The Dr. Frances A. SHEPHERD’64 Endowed Fund was established by Dr. Frances A. SHEPHERD’64 OC, OOnt, MD, FRCPC, FASCO, LLD (Hon). A renowned oncologist, Dr. Shepherd is a passionate champion of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. Her namesake endowed fund will support the Dr. Frances A. SHEPHERD’64 Scholarship for Excellence in STEM which will recognize graduating students who achieve academic excellence in STEM subjects and who demonstrate a passion for STEM through their participation in relevant co-curricular activities. THE THEODOROPOULOS FAMILY ENDOWED FUND
The Theodoropoulos Family Endowed Fund was established by current parents George and Betty Theodoropoulos in recognition of the positive experience
their daughter, Anastasia, has had — and continues to have — at Branksome Hall. Their namesake fund will support needsbased Student Financial Assistance, providing bursaries to students whose families otherwise would be unable to afford the full cost of tuition. FUND RE-NAMED IN 2018-19: THE LUELLA SCOTT FARMER’23 AND SUSANNA SCOTT MITCHELL’23 ENDOWED FUND
The Luella SCOTT Farmer’23 Endowed Fund was originally established in 1996 by Dr. Alfred Wells Farmer in memory of his late wife. In 2019, Susan MITCHELL Kilpatrick’54 (Dr. and Mrs. Farmer’s niece) made a new leadership gift to the fund in honour of her late mother (and Mrs. Farmer’s twin sister), Susanna SCOTT Mitchell’23. The fund has since been renamed in memory of both Scott sisters and will continue to serve its original purpose of providing needs-based financial assistance through the renamed Luella SCOTT’23 and Susanna SCOTT’23 Bursary.

“ We are big believers in the difference Branksome makes on its students’ lives and, in particular, in helping them develop an innovation mindset. We see the impact of this approach on our daughter and her peers everyday. That’s why we’re choosing to support innovation facilities. Imagine the world-changing ideas students will dream up in these spaces.” HEATHER AND PETER SENST

SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENTS
Inspiring voices
Historic week of high-stakes speaking
It was the Olympics of student oratory as Branksome hosted the 31st World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships, in Canada for the first time ever, in April. One hundred top-tier, international competitors were welcomed to an Opening Ceremony featuring poet George Elliott Clarke. The week-long celebration of student oratory wrapped up with a joint Closing Ceremony and Rachel Phillips Belash Speaker Series event featuring Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Chrystia Freeland. “This is a proud and defining moment for us,” said Principal Karen Jurjevich.
Optimism and resilience were the powerful messages as Asmat Azizi Arab, an Afghan refugee, spoke at the annual Green Carpet Celebration on June 20. Thanks to the inspirational efforts of his sponsor, Branksome’s own Guidance and University Counsellor Cory Miller, he’s at to Huron University College with a full scholarship. Earlier in the year, students and parents also had the opportunity to hear from Academy Award-winning filmmaker and activist Sharmeen ObaidChinoy who spoke about her fight for women’s equality.
Best-in-class communications
Applause for our drama queens
With striking portraits and profiles of our diverse student community, Branksome Hall’s fresh website invited widespread attention. Nudging out entries from top international universities and schools, our communications and marketing team earned a silver Circle of Excellence Award in the digital communications category from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education in June. Claimed one judge, this is the site that delivers “the ‘wow factor.’”
It was a year of magical stage productions school-wide, with the Middle School Theatre Ensemble’s spellbinding production of Charlotte’s Web and an enchanting Senior Theatre Production of Narnia.

Bands earn double gold Talent, focus, discipline and extra rehearsals paid off with two gold medals for our Grade 8 and Grades 9/10 bands at the 47th MusicFest Canada Nationals at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, in May. Congratulations to all student musicians, as well as to music teachers Scott Harbin and Alexandra Bourque.
Hear it for the Highlanders With new squash and U14 soccer teams, there are more opportunities than ever to cheer for the team-building power of athletics at Branksome Hall. Hundreds of students achieved personal and group bests including Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) firsts in midget cross-country, senior field hockey, senior cross-country and U12-14 swimming, to name a very few.
Afri-View Club sparks conversation
Fine showing for 116th graduating class
A space to discuss the shared experience of black identity — that was the objective of Branksome’s new Afri-View Club, which met monthly with other independent schools and hosted its first Toronto Black Youth Conference. The event offered 100 participants mentoring sessions and workshops on mental health and academic success.
The tight bonds of lasting friendship were celebrated as 109 students said farewell to Branksome Hall at Graduation 2019 — including 10 students who studied together since Kindergarten. A full 93 per cent of our university applicants received scholarship offers totalling $1.7 million and 100 per cent were Ontario Scholars.

“ O ur daughter received a superb education at Branksome Hall. She was the beneficiary of others’ past donations to the school and we’re delighted to ‘pay it forward’. We’re supporting the new innovation facility and its programming because developing an innovation mindset is essential, and is becoming more important every day. Attitude and capability are paramount, but programs and facilities are helpful to nurture those native instincts. This is an unprecedented opportunity to make Branksome stand out further.” DONALD GULOIEN AND IRENE BOYCHUK

GRADUATING YEAR STUDENT CAMPAIGN
Students in Branksome Hall’s Class of 2019 have always been known for their strong sense of community. Take, for example, the fact that the class chose to celebrate “Friendsgiving” following Branksome Hall’s annual Installation Ceremony — joining together to mark the traditional holiday as a group before dispersing to celebrate with their families. Sense of community and inclusiveness come naturally to this remarkable group of students. It was therefore no surprise that Class of 2019 members generously chose to make a group gift in support of Student Financial Assistance upon their graduation. More than 98 per cent of students contributed to The Class of 2019 Endowed Fund – marking a new record for student participation in a graduating year fundraising campaign. As in past years, students were joined in their fundraising efforts by their parents. Led by co-chairs Barry Pickford and Barbara Henderson, André Perey and Megan Towers, as well as Andrea and Justin LaFayette, a further 76 per cent of parents donated to The Class of 2019 Endowed Fund, Ultimately, students and parents combined to raise an incredible $74,904. The new Class of 2019 Bursary will be awarded for the first time in the 2020-21 school year. In keeping with the graduating class’ wishes, the bursary will be awarded with preference to a student from a marginalized community and/or who has overcome extraordinary socio-economic barriers in her life.

“ I donate to Branksome each year because I think it’s important to give back to the community that gave me so many opportunities growing up.
