MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND CHAIR

The Power of Community

Thanks to our donors who support our strategic initiatives, Branksome girls become agile, collaborative, entrepreneurial thinkers ready to enter the workforce poised to solve tomorrow’s complex problems and to shape a better world.

It really does take a village to raise a remarkable girl. Each year, Branksome counts on generous parents, alumnae, grandparents, employees and other school friends to partner with us in supporting our girls on their journeys to love learning and shape a better world. The Branksome student experience simply wouldn’t be — couldn’t be — what it is today without you and your contributions. We’re very grateful. It’s in celebration of your, and the Branksome community’s, extraordinary philanthropy that we share this Donor and Giving Report. As you will read in the following pages, the 2016–17 school year held many exciting firsts for Branksome Hall. The Chandaria Research Centre launched its four inaugural research projects this year, under the leadership of its new director, Dr. Mira Gambhir. The Centre’s impact will be wide felt — guiding not only how Branksome serves its students but also providing valuable insights that will benefit educators around the world. We were also delighted to host Branksome’s first TEDx Youth Conference in April. This student-

organized event featuring fascinating speakers from a wide range of fields, including alum and IMAX film pioneer, Toni TROW Myers’61. April also saw the announcement of our successful bid to host the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships in 2019 — making Branksome the first Canadian host school in the competition’s history. As you read through this report we hope you’ll be struck by the power and reach of your support. Whether you contributed to the Principal’s Fund and our new “classrooms of tomorrow,” championed Student Financial Aid or invested in one of our worldclass academic, arts or wellness programs — please know you are making a real and positive difference in the lives of Branksome girls. Thank you for investing in our school and believing in the limitless potential of our girls. Sincerely, Karen L. Jurjevich

BRANKSOME HALL FOUNDATION

Committing to the Future The Branksome Hall Foundation ensures perpetual support for important program areas and priority projects at Branksome Hall. These have included the construction of the Athletics and Wellness Centre and other campus improvements, Student Financial Aid, professional development, music, the arts, athletics, research and year-end awards and prizes. It is prudently managed by a volunteer Board of Trustees and its experienced investment team. The Foundation continued to grow in 2016–17. Three new endowed funds were established bringing the total number of named funds to 74. Thanks to the establishment of these new funds, as well as, restricted funds and investment gains by existing funds, the value of the Foundation’s holdings grew by 10.3 per cent, ending its fiscal year on June 30, 2017 with a balance of $22,062,814 (unaudited). 8

“So many of our family members have attended or been involved with Branksome. It’s a connection that truly spans generations.” SANDRA BOLTÉ’73 Alumna, past parent and current staff member

Three Generations of Support Supporting Branksome is something of a family tradition for alumna, past parent and current staff member, Sandra BOLTÉ’73. This generous history started with Sandra’s parents, Diana BECK Bolté’46 and Auguste Bolté, and is now being continued by her children, Andrea AMELL Rees’03 and Stephen Amell. When Sandra married John Burns (father of Allison BURNS’04) in December, Andrea and Stephen surprised the couple with a special gift: the endowment of a new Student Financial Aid fund in their names, as well as the rechristening of the Senior Student Athlete of the Year Award in Sandra’s honour. “This gift means so much to us and was such a complete surprise,” says Sandra. “Their gift was the highlight of what was already an incredible day in our lives.”

The Sandra BOLTÉ’73 & John L. Burns Endowed Fund was established by Stephen Amell and Andrea AMELL Rees’03 in recognition of their mother’s long history with the school, and in celebration of her marriage to John L. Burns (father of Allison BURNS’04) on December 17, 2016. The Fund will support the Sandra BOLTÉ’73 & John L. Burns Bursary and the Sandra BOLTÉ’73 Senior Athlete of the Year Award. Stephen and Sandra presented the latter for the first time at the Green Carpet Celebration in June.

Inspired by the experience of one of their classmates, Class of 2017 students and their families established the Class of 2017 Endowed Fund in support of Student Financial Aid. Eighty six per cent of students and 51 per cent of parents contributed to the fund, raising over $83,000. Thanks to their support, more great girls, of all backgrounds, will be able to access Branksome for years to come.

Thank you to the Amells, Elspeth ABBEY Johnson’43 and the graduates and parents of the Class of 2017 for their generous vision, commitment and investment in Branksome Hall.

“I want to see Branksome’s culture of excellence, enthusiasm, and compassion carry on long into the future and I hope my legacy gift can help make that happen.” SANDI SHAW MCCABE’67

Sandi credits Branksome for making her the person she is today. Starting at the school in Grade 1, she prospered, gained confidence, and always felt that Branksome Hall gave her all the tools she needed for both her post-secondary education, and her working life that followed, by providing its many opportunities. She has left her gift undesignated for Branksome’s greatest future needs.

DESIGNATION OF ANNUAL APPEAL DONATIONS

Thank you a million times over. The collective power of our community was on vivid display in 2016–17, when $1,048,008 was contributed in response to our Annual Appeal. Classrooms of Tomorrow

A

t Branksome, we aim to develop students’ thinking and analytic skills, enabling them to become critical, innovative thinkers, equipped to solve real-world problems. With the support of the Principal’s Fund and donor-designated gifts, we have invested in four, newly renovated “classrooms of tomorrow.” Designed to integrate space, furniture and technology, these adaptable spaces facilitate collaboration and creativity — they are spaces that teachers and students can easily configure to suit their lessons and learning needs. Thanks to the Annual Appeal, we also continue to leverage our STEAM Studio in the Senior and Middle School and the Makerspace in the Junior School, by introducing

a range of exciting technologies for learning. Applying state-ofthe-art Virtual Reality, delving into the importance of machine learning, analytics and artificial intelligence, we are enabling

students to develop agility and an entrepreneurial mindset; as future leaders, we encourage them to challenge the status quo and to generate new ideas and solutions.

Students collaborate in the renovated Middle School classroom.

Student Financial Aid

W

e know that the value of a Branksome education cannot be underestimated, and it is a priority to provide opportunities for deserving girls of differing backgrounds to attend the school. In 2016–17, our community generously supported Student Financial Aid through gifts to the Annual Appeal and endowed bursaries. As a result, Branksome was privileged to provide financial support to 70 outstanding students. We gratefully acknowledge those families who, through their gifts, made a significant impact on young women’s lives.

“Branksome creates an atmosphere that encourages learning and knowledge and enhances that with caring, personal attention and personal development. This is the right community for our family.” DR. MOHAMED ELHADDAD & MS. ALAA MATAR Current parents of Maya (SK)

Supporting Classrooms of Tomorrow Arriving in Canada three years ago, Dr. Mohamed Elhaddad and his wife Alaa Matar had “no friends, no family.” The couple, pharmacists born and raised in Egypt, were looking to create a community of support for their family in their new home. They never imagined finding that at their daughter Maya’s school. “I always thought of school as a base to learn and that’s it, until Maya joined Branksome,” says Mohamed. “Branksome is about learning, but also about caring.” Maya is now in SK, and is having a wonderful experience. The family made a major gift to fund the transformation of a Grade 4 room into a new “classroom of tomorrow” bearing their name. “We love how engaging and modern the new classes will be for the girls,” Mohamed says.

“I went to Branksome, as did two of my daughters, and now my granddaughter is there. It’s as if the circle is completing. But maybe it isn’t — my great-granddaughters could go there, too!” MARY PAT JONES ARMSTRONG’63 Alumna, past parent, current grandparent, Foundation Board Trustee, former Chair of the Board of Governors

Demonstrating Confidence in Branksome Hall “When my granddaughter was asked why she wanted to go to Branksome, she said, ‘Because it’s a family tradition,’” says Mary Pat JONES Armstrong’63, who had two daughters also attend the school. Today, Mary Pat enjoys seeing one of the youngest generation of her family, Grade 9 student Annie Conrod, around campus. “I’ll come out of a Foundation meeting and pop down to the Lower Field and see my granddaughter on the tennis court,” says Mary Pat, who is a founding member of the Branksome Hall Foundation and now a Trustee. Directing the family’s donation to the Principal’s Fund, Mary Pat explains: “The Principal leads the school, and we trust her to decide how best to use our gift.”

“Some school music programs are underfunded, but Branksome has a great program and great teachers.” DR. KAZUHIRO YASUFUKU Current parent of Chihiro Yasufuku (Grade 11)

Enhancing Education Through Music Dr. Kazuhiro Yasufuku may be a thoracic surgeon at Toronto General Hospital and associate professor of surgery at the University of Toronto, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t see great value in the arts. In fact, he and his wife Mihoko have regularly directed their Branksome Circle-level annual donations to the school’s Music program. The program is one of the reasons the couple liked Branksome when evaluating schools for their daughter,

Grade 11 student Chihiro Yasufuku, four years ago. Chihiro has been playing violin since she was three, and, in addition to the Music program, is also in the Branksome choir. “Branksome’s strong arts programs are really important,” says Kazuhiro. “Mihoko and I believe music enhances learning. It’s been a really great experience for our daughter. She looks forward to her classes and likes her teachers.”
