M E S S AG E F R O M T H E P R I N C I PA L

You’ve heard me say this many times: I truly believe that Branksome Hall will change your life. By the same token, you too, can leave your own mark on our school. This past year, so many of you have done just that by generously giving back your time and your financial support. Philanthropy, no matter the size of the gift, helps us do the things we could not otherwise do. It helps prepare the next generation of students for anything that comes their way. One of the lessons that 2020 has taught us is how important it is to be ready for the unexpected. This Donor and Giving Report highlights the exceptional support –and connection–of our extended, and intergenerational, Branksome community. It also highlights the ways in which we are growing as an institution, thanks to your collective contributions.

MESSAGES FROM THE CHAIR, BOARD OF GOVERNORS

What a year it has been! Though the pandemic made this past year very different from previous years, one thing that has stayed the same is the incredible sense of community we have at Branksome. Our students, and their well-being, are what matters. And our community is always behind them, supporting them. When the world stopped in March, I was so impressed by the flexibility of our students, and the dedication of our faculty and staff, as we all pivoted into a virtual school. Our extended Branksome community came together, supporting all of the students’ unique needs that 2020 created, so that we can make sure they will be prepared for whatever is to come.

The longer I continue on the Board, the more I see our sense of community and connection get stronger and stronger over time. We’re lucky to have each other. Thank you for supporting, and leaving your mark on the future of Branksome Hall.

Undoubtedly, there are many worthy causes vying for your attention and support. I am so grateful that Branksome Hall is one of them. Thank you for making a difference to our students and to our community.

Thirty years ago, no one talked about their mental health. It’s something the Class of ’86 wants to change forever. Over the years, on the Friday night before their reunion dinner, classmates travelled from near and far to meet at the home of Leeanne WELD Kostopoulos’86, talking into the early hours of the morning. As the women eased into their adult years, they began to open up, sharing stories of struggle and how they got through difficult times. Some of those stories were of their time at Branksome. Other stories were of tragedies that happened later on. For some women, it was not until they reached their 40s that they felt they could openly speak about their own mental health. th

When it came to their 30 reunion, the class wanted to do something meaningful. Feeling a responsibility to pay it forward – and to help future generations of women build

resilience – they rallied around a $10,000 gift to create The Class of 1986 Mental Health Initiative. The fund supports Branksome’s mental health and well-being curriculum, including the annual Mental Health Week in January, student assemblies, and the development of a wellness app for students. “Students face a lot of stress these days,” says Joelle Therriault, Lead Social Worker at the Senior School. “Academics, social media, climate change, and the pandemic all take a heavy toll. At Branksome, we teach students that resilience isn’t something you’re born with – it’s a skill we can all build, nurture and develop throughout our lives.”

health, or are afraid to speak about it,” says Cathy MILLS Hess’86. “Our class wants to help break that stigma for good and that’s why we keep giving to this fund.”

YOUR IMPACT Our community's support impacts every aspect of life at Branksome Hall. The following represent just some of the ways philanthropy made a positive mark at the school in 2019-20. CLASS OF 2020 EMERGENCY NEEDS AWARD Sometimes life throws us a curveball. The Class of 2020 Emergency Needs Award makes life a little easier when the unexpected happens. The award supports a Senior School student whose family encounters unplanned financial difficulties during her studies. It helps pay for tuition and other expenses that arise. Thank you to our class and parent leaders for making this year such a success.

the Branksome community, and with privilege comes responsibility,” it read. Branksome Hall has made diversity, equity and inclusion a strategic priority. DEI training for employees, a comprehensive third-party audit and anti-racism programming for students and faculty across campus are just a few of the initiatives the school is undertaking. We are committed to have our students, alumni and generous supporters work together to make the Branksome experience more equitable and inclusive for all students and staff.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION In response to the murder of George Floyd, a group of students and alumnae took the initiative to pen an open letter to the Branksome community, urging us to expand on our existing anti-racism initiatives at the school. “We believe that the work of fighting racism and other forms of oppression is an ongoing process and that it begins within our own communities. It is a privilege to be part of

PHILANTHROPY AND COVID PREPAREDNESS The more we know about COVID-19, the more we know that good ventilation is critical to reducing indoor transmission and enhancing student safety. A $75,000 investment has provided physical improvements to the school, such as the installation of air purifiers. Air purifiers help circulate air faster, and filters capture microscopic particles.

VIRTUAL BRANKSOME COVID-19 changed the way students learn, as Branksome quickly pivoted into a virtual world this past spring. Called “Open U,” the school expanded its online services to include an entirely virtual private campus space that allows students, faculty and staff to explore, connect and learn together in a unique 3D environment.

STUDENT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Not everyone can afford the full price of a Branksome Hall education. Student financial assistance – supported by our generous community – creates opportunities for students who would not otherwise be able to attend. Students are chosen for their potential, and it’s incredible to watch them exceed their goals by leveraging all the opportunities that a Branksome education enables – opportunities that they might not have available to them elsewhere.

Inviting students from diverse backgrounds ensures a wide variety of perspectives and experiences at Branksome, which also enriches the school. Students, teachers, and the wider Branksome community become all the better when we invite a variety of perspectives and experiences to participate together.

LIFE-CHANGING GENEROSITY

“Branksome was such a great

launchpad to recognizing my own potential. The strong network I built has carried into my adult life.

For nearly 40 years, life-changing ripples have flowed outward from the Branksome Hall Alumnae Association Endowed Bursary Fund. Since the mid-1980s, donations both modest and major in amount have brought this bursary fund up to its current $900,000 endowment. The milestone level of a $1-million bursary fund is within sight. And the impact has already been immeasurable. Founded by Branksome alumnae, the bursary has provided financial support to dozens of promising students, reshaping lives while enhancing the school’s diversity. By funding a major portion of a student’s annual tuition, the Alumnae Association Bursary opens doors to students “who otherwise wouldn’t have the means to attend, and who would thrive at Branksome Hall given its innovative, entrepreneurial, supportive,

10 BRANKSOME HALL

and inspiring environment,” says Karen CORDES Woods’99 -- Branksome Hall Board member and Past President of the BH Alumnae Association. Sally ADAMS Medland’66 was among the leaders who, during her tenure as President of the Alumnae Association (1985 - 1988), promoted supporting financial aid for current students. “When I served as President of the Alumnae Association, women were becoming increasingly aware of their donor and giving responsibilities,” says Sally, Branksome’s long time Kindergarten

teacher, now retired. “Trail-blazing alumnae demonstrated that women had a similar responsibility to their institutions of learning that men had to theirs.” And alumnae, above all, wanted to support future students through financial assistance. Any amount of support makes a difference in moving the Alumnae Association Bursary toward its milliondollar goal. Says Melanie ARGIROS Breder’08, President, Branksome Hall Alumnae Association: “While the school recently received a magnificent

Katie REIFFENSTEIN Rimoldi’04 Alumnae Association Bursary recipient

gift of $35,000 to the bursary, every donation of $25 is also vitally important. Generosity is cumulative; it all adds up to a sum greater than its parts.” All those with a connection to Branksome can help this important bursary reach the million-dollar endowment level that will fund full tuition for a student every year, and provide more promising students with a place in the Branksome community. Looking back, Alumnae Association Bursary recipient Katie REIFFENSTEIN Rimoldi’04 recalls: “I was one of

only six new girls who entered the school in Grade 10 in 2001. We were warmly welcomed from the start, whether receiving financial aid or not. Branksome was such a great launchpad to recognizing my own potential. The strong network I built has carried into my adult life.” Katie currently lives and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands, as the Global Reserve Marketing Manager at Diageo B.V." Katie adds: “It’s invaluable to have the Alumnae Association Endowed Bursary open doors for students who can benefit

from the amazing Branksome education, yet who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity. And bursary students add to socio-economic and other types of diversity that enrich the school experience for everyone.” A gift of any amount, large or small, will propel the fund toward the million-dollar level, support future students and help sustain Branksome’s drive to greater diversity, equity and inclusion. Thank you to all who have supported this important bursary.

THE BARWISE FAMILY BURSARY EMBODIES A PHILANTHROPIC LEGACY

“We believe those who

have been fortunate to be successful in life have a responsibility to give back to their community where they can. It is personally fulfilling to do so.

When Wayne Barwise retired from his term as Chair of the Branksome Hall Board of Governors in 2019, the school community thanked him with extraordinary generosity.

In recognition of Wayne’s retirement from the Board of Governors, volunteer leaders, the Senior Leadership team, and friends of the school collectively donated over $82,000 to the newly created Barwise Family Bursary, to honour Wayne’s dedication. Doubling the impact of this extraordinary recognition, Wayne and Kim Barwise matched these donations, propelling the bursary fund to over $164,000. “It’s important to acknowledge that 50 per cent of the Barwise Family Bursary has been funded by the Branksome community,” says Wayne. “We want to 12 BRANKSOME HALL

thank the donors for their generous support of this very worthy cause of student financial aid.” Wayne and Kim were delighted to find Branksome Hall for their daughters Lindsay (Class of 2013) and Brittany (Class of 2016). Kim recalls: “We wanted to provide our girls with a quality education in an environment that would build their confidence. When we went to a school event, we heard Principal Karen Jurjevich say: ‘We believe confidence equates to competence’. And from that moment we were sold on Branksome.”

Wayne and Kim Barwise

“Our girls were privileged to receive a quality education at Branksome, and it prepared them well to excel at university,” Wayne says. “At Branksome they found lifelong friends and continue to maintain their connection to the school through these friendships.” Current Board Chair, Jean Cloutier, notes that Wayne is one of Branksome’s longest-serving Governors, with more than 10 years of service. “This shows his commitment to, and love for, the school, even after his daughters graduated.”

Wayne cites three highlights from his term on the Board of Governors. First, sitting on the inaugural board of Branksome Hall Asia and helping to build the school in Jeju, South Korea. Second, chairing the Property Committee and overseeing the development of the AWC. Third, as Board Chair, enhancing Board structure, governance and effectiveness by establishing the People and Culture Advisory Committee and creating the roles of two Vice-Chairs.

“We believe those who have been fortunate to be successful in life have a responsibility to give back to their community where they can. It is personally fulfilling to do so.” says Wayne. Both Kim and Wayne hope the Barwise Family Bursary will continue to grow, along with other bursaries dedicated to financial aid, “so that more students will be able to experience a Branksome Hall education. As someone who was a recipient of financial aid for parts of my education,” says Wayne, “I understand its significant value and importance.”

The generosity, foresight and dedication of Wayne and Kim Barwise ensure that theirs will be an enduring legacy to Branksome Hall for future generations of students.

This report recognizes donations made during the Branksome Hall fiscal year July 1, 2019 to June 20, 2020.

2019-20

“When I first began working at

Branksome, I saw how a scholarship completely changed a student’s life. I witnessed the student participate in everything that the school had to offer: trying new experiences and leveraging so many opportunities that she could not have imagined elsewhere. It was inspiring to see her thrive. I felt moved to give back. My family established a scholarship in our name to help more students like her dream big, and achieve great things. I often wonder if it’s students themselves who are the biggest gift of all to us because of how they enrich our lives in so many ways with their way of seeing the world.
