The popular annual event is the area’s biggest fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and provides much needed funding for research, patient support, prevention

information and education, and detection and treatment.

This year’s Relay for Life will feature a variety of fun for all ages, while raising money for a tremendous cause.

Submitted to Branson Globe In an effort to unite our community in a year that has caused so much division, Cox Medical Center Branson will dedicate a “Prayer Square” on its campus and invites the community to participate in 24 hours of prayer on Monday, August 23, beginning at 10 a.m.

The Square is located on the top level of the main parking lot by the flag pole. CoxHealth, along with its community partners, invite local businesses and individuals to commit to a prayer time by send-

ing a message to the Cox Medical Center Branson Facebook page.

To allow for social distancing, we ask that groups of ten or less visit at a time. There will be a tent to provide shade and refreshments sponsored by Branson Bank and Vintage Paris. Hospital security will help oversee the square during the overnight hours. Masks are required.

‘Together Forever’: Charity of the Month benefits young families

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Each month, Central Bank of Branson selects a Charity of the Month. During that month, Central Bank employees raise money for the selected charity. Employee donations are matched by Central Bank. The Central Bank and KRZK Charity of the Month for August is the Together Forever: A Skyler Sanders Family Foundation.

Founded in 2013, Together Forever was formed by Ryan and Melissa Sanders. It was a personal family tragedy that led the Sanders family to start their nonprofit organization. Their son, Skyler Sanders, passed away in 2010.

“Skyler was a little boy filled with lots of energy and love for life,” explained Ryan. “He loved

people and was very kind and giving. He loved to play sports, especially soccer and baseball. He was diagnosed with an inoperable and fatal brain tumor (DIPG) at just six years old. One minute he was running around like a normal sixyear-old boy, and the next we were in a hospital for chemotherapy and radiation. The doctors told us that he would probably only live for 12 to 18 months, even with treatment.

Skyler had amazing faith and fought for over two years. He was loved by many and continues to live on through this foundation.”

The foundation, formed in Skyler’s memory, is Together Forever, a charity designed to give families who are facing cancer an opportunity to create special and long-lasting memories.

Said Ryan, “After our son passed, we knew we wanted to keep his story alive and to be able to bless other families walking through a similar situation. When talking to one of my mentors about what this nonprofit might look like, he asked me what meant the most to us as we walked through our journey. As we looked back, the things we remembered were the times we spent together as a family and created memories that we will take with us forever.”

Sanders continued, “This community had supported our family during our journey and now they

continue to walk alongside us as a foundation. Fighting cancer was such a stressful and overwhelming time. The memories that we cherish are the times we were able to get away from all the doctor’s appointments, medications and treatments. It was the times that we were able to spend time together as a family and have fun together, creating memories. It was a time filled with Skyler’s laughter and smiles. When we look back, that is what we cherish the most – memories that can last a lifetime. What better way to honor Skyler than to give families facing cancer the opportunity to make special memories? That is what we want to give to other families fighting cancer.”

Melissa, and their children Macy, Spencer and Violet, with help from a board of directors, Together Forever has a goal to create opportunities for families dealing with cancer – that of a child or parent of a minor child – to make memories that last a lifetime by providing families with an expense-paid retreat to Branson, with the foundation covering the family’s meals, lodging and attractions. To date, the Sanders family has had the opportunity to bless more than 40 families with trips to our beautiful town.

Those wanting to donate to Together Forever, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, can do so through the organization’s website. Donations can also be mailed to P.O. Box

645, Branson, MO 65615. Monies raised by the foundation are used to help with the cost of the trips.

Additionally, Together Forever offers two scholarships annually, in the amount of $1,000 each, to local high school seniors whose lives have been affected by cancer.

Another way to help Together Forever help more families is by participating in their annual fundraiser, Landing to Landing, which will be held on September 18.

Landing to Landing is a kayak and canoe race to benefit Together Forever. The 7th annual event features an eight-mile race, beginning at the Fish Hatchery off of Highway 165 and a three-mile race, which

warm hospitality and for its core values: faith, family, flag, friends and future. This is our legacy,” Head says. “Now is the time for us to unite in our shared values rather than focusing our differences, which are pulling us apart.

What if we all took a day to be united in prayer for our medical professionals, our nonprofits, our first responders, and our schools that have all heroically worked to meet the needs of our community during this pandemic? Pam Yancey of Arvest Bank, who also serves on the hospital’s board of directors, hopes the “Prayer Square” will bring out the best in Branson.

“The heart of this community is so good,” she says. “Coming together to support each other is what we’ve always done. We hope this special Square will help us get back to that. This isn’t about politics; it’s about our people. Our community may not always agree on everything, but I know we all want health and happiness for our friends and neighbors.”

Protesters target vaccine mandates

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer On Wednesday, August 11, a small group of protesters gathered near the intersection of Business Hwy. 65 and Route 165 in Hollister across from the main entrance to College of the Ozarks. They carried signs urging the community, and the college in particular, to avoid mandating the COVID-19 vaccine. A few vehicle occupants voiced disagreement as they slowed for the traffic light, while others shouted their encouragement or gave a thumbs-up.

Asked why they opposed a mandate, group members responded that while COVID-19 is a serious health issue and some of their friends and family have died from it, the science isn’t there to support mandating vaccines. They cited a lack of long-term studies about side effects and pointed out that

effects are being underreported, while natural immunity in those who have recovered from Covid is largely ignored.

Although the group is concerned about vaccine mandates in general, they selected proximity to College of the Ozarks as the protest location because the college’s policies directly affect family members and friends. One protester has a child who is exempt from vaccination requirements because his medical history includes past vaccine reactions. The parents decided against having their other children routinely vaccinated, opting instead for natural immunity and a proactively healthy lifestyle, but were told their daughter must be current on vaccinations when entering C of O since she did not have documented medical exemption. The “catch-up” shots created serious and expensive medical issues the student is still dealing with, further increasing the family’s concerns. “There’s no way the CDC can consider every person’s situation when making recommendations,” said the mother. “People need the freedom to talk with their doctors, do their research, and make the decision that’s right for them, with privacy and without coercion.”

The group also voiced concerns about possible financial ramifications for students who work during the summer to earn room and board if they must leave campus or quarantine due to a positive Covid test and lose those benefits, or for students who commute to school and work part time in the community. They are particularly concerned that response to infection not be different for unvaccinated than for vaccinated.

Another concern is the social consequences; masking and distancing already render special events less enjoyable, but if applied only to the unvaccinated, they also violate privacy. “Being told to mask or social distance if unvaccinated, amounts to sharing a personal medical decision and is a violation of HIPAA privacy laws,” said one young person. Another reiterated that dividing a group by vaccine status discriminates against people whose natural immunity due to recovering from Covid

An older member of the group pointed out that mandates are not in keeping with the C of O mission and values statement, much of which revolves around patriotism and freedom. “Our veterans fought for freedom, and a mandate isn’t freedom,” he stated.

Asked about vaccination requirements, C of O public relations director Valorie Coleman said there will not be a vaccine mandate for students returning to campus. According to the campus website, masking indoors is recommended for unvaccinated students and may be required for certain events or circumstances. Masks will also be worn in certain workstations.

A ‘grave threat to the liberties of all Missourians.’ Really?

The Ole Seagull The Friday, August 13, 2021, edition of the Branson Globe contains a “press release type piece” (Piece) setting forth the opinions and actions of Branson’s State Representative Brian H. Seitz. The Piece has Seitz’s views of what he considers “grave threats to the liberties of all Missourians,” along with his actions to try to decrease them.

What are these “grave threats to the liberties of all Missourians” of which he speaks? According to the Piece, one of them is that “private businesses are, or are planning to, require proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter their establishments.” He goes on to say, “It is unconscionable that businesses would be allowed to discriminate against employees and patrons based on the medical status or their religious beliefs.” The Piece closes with Seitz’s “request that the governor call the legislature back into an extraordinary session to address these ‘grave threats to the liberties of all Missourians.’”

“But Seagull, isn’t that the same Seitz that spoke out against man-

datory masking saying that government should stay out of it and leave it up to the individual businesses to make their choice?” “It sure is.”

It’s the same Seitz that questioned the Branson Board of Aldermen’s passing an ordinance permitting the city’s businesses the choice to sell beer and light wine, as state law permits, at its August 10, 2021, meeting. At that meeting, Seitz said, “It’s not about telling businesses what to do. It’s not about restricting businesses. It’s about the brand and what makes Branson unique.” His presentation had nothing to do with giving businesses a choice or the constitutionality of the ordinance.

It was directed only to his opinion about the branding of Branson and how he thinks things should be.

Jason Outman, President/CEO, Branson Lakes Area Chamber/ CVB, gave its endorsement to the proposal. As to between Seitz and the Branson Lakes Area Chamber/ CVB, when it comes to Branson’s branding and marketing, an Ole Seagull makes the same choice the Branson Board of Aldermen did as it passed the ordinance.

Train Up a Child: Why some kids ‘act out’

By Pat Lamb Little tries the patience of adults more than having a child misbehave by throwing a tantrum or acting in unacceptable ways.

Often, the tendency is to treat the symptom of behavior rather than looking deeper to decide why the child is acting as he/she is and treating the reason for the behavior. There are many reasons a child misbehaves. One reason children do so is that they simply haven’t been taught acceptable behavior. Other children have found through experience that their actions get them what they

want. Still other children become frustrated about their present circumstances and act out because they don’t know another way to deal with the situation.

It seems that some parents think that children will raise themselves. They neglect teaching their children proper behavior and simply leave them to their own way of thinking about things. These children are almost like little wild animals that have never been tamed. They make decisions according to base wants for the moment with little regard for consequences of

behavior. If they feel like running, they run. If they feel like shouting, they shout. If they feel like tearing up something, they tear it up. Actions are determined by feelings at the moment. In such cases, teachers or others working with these children must teach them how to act along with the “whys” of correct behavior. Often, these children have been left so long that they will never catch up with where they should be in learning proper behavior. In many cases, the parents themselves don’t know how to act acceptably even if

they should decide to teach their children.

them what they want. These are the children whose parents give in to temper tantrums just to get the child to be quiet. It is human nature to use tactics that work for our survival. Children learn that this is one tactic that works, so it is repeated. A common example of this child is the one who throws a tantrum in a store while shopping to get something desired. The parent, rather than tolerate the embarrassment, will get the item for the child. The next time the child wants something, that child will throw another temper tantrum. Parents need to stop giving in to the tantrums to change this child and instead respond only to positive behavior.

Sometimes children find themselves in situations that they can’t handle. This could be a child who normally acts very nice, but suddenly there may be an outburst.

Children have not yet learned the “niceties” of talk to say no to something beyond their ability.

In addition, as a child, they are

your work isn’t done? I work from home, and even settling down to do my actual job is hard with house or garden work staring at me. Watch a football game before cleaning up the kitchen? No way.

When my kids lived at home, I rewrote the old country song about “prop me up against the jukebox when I die” about laundry.

I don’t think I’m alone. Several years ago, “Veggie Tales” related to every adult overhearing the show as Archibald sang, “I’m so busy, busy, dreadfully busy, you’ve no idea what I have to do.”

People work hard to achieve financial security, only to be concerned about their investments. My dad faithfully performed factory duties for years, saving money in hopes of enjoying retirement—only to turn around and tackle volunteer duties and a huge garden. Many

cases of anxiety involve some level of basing personal worth on productivity or feeling inadequate if a task is left undone.

Studying Hebrews, I flipped back to the Old Testament descriptions of the duties of the priests in Israel. Talk about never-ending work—keeping those lamps going, offering sacrifices daily, not to mention the cleanup involved in dealing with all those animals.

(After growing up around folks who processed their own beef, chickens and deer, I gag just thinking about that.)

At least those priests had job security. But there was the emotional side of knowing that whatever they did would never be enough.

Relationship with God depended on daily doing what was commanded in the temple. The high priest had to be extra careful, as he

entered the Holy of Holies on the Day of Atonement.

Until Jesus.

Everything in those Old Testament rituals pointed to Jesus, the perfect sacrifice. Jesus did the hard work for us—taking our sins to the cross. When he came to earth, he knew he would face a death so horrible that he cried out to God asking if there was any other way. But he did it. The work is finished, and we just need to believe it and accept it. As a beautiful worship song by Passion reminds us, “The cross needs no addition.”

We are blessed to know the end of the story and have personal relationship with God through Jesus. Ancient Israel often got sidetracked from trusting God; the rituals became just that, rituals. I still have duties every day. Some,

such as decisions regarding an elderly parent, seem overwhelming. Others, like laundry, are simply repetitive. Our working years can stretch on if we don’t strike it rich somehow. But the knowledge of what Jesus has done and the depths of his love make it easier to cope with difficult tasks.

His complete work on the cross makes me worth more than my to-do list.

With my personality, deciding to go to bed with the kitchen messy or walking past a full trash can probably won’t happen, but I can choose to be thankful I’m healthy enough to do those things. I can pray for wisdom to delegate, ask for help, or even say “no” sometimes. Because of Jesus, I can do those things knowing I’m loved and have eternal relationship with God!

Parents and teachers sometimes “pigeonhole” a child into a situation that is scary or beyond the child’s competence. In such cases, the child knows nothing better than to become frustrated and “lash out” at those around. Not all children are of the nature to sit still for long periods of time in school. Some children are designed to be active children and not the nice and quiet children we may want. God designs us uniquely and that design does not always fit into the expectations of a parent or teacher. In such cases, parents and teachers need to assure the child that he/she is not expected to do something that the child can’t do. A different assignment may need to be given at the level of ability.

There is no substitute for time spent with a child to learn what the child is thinking and feeling.

This knowledge helps us understand the child’s behavior and with many prayers for wisdom, parents and teachers can then address that behavior in a loving way.

An Ole Seagull can’t believe that the circumstances outlined in the Piece are even close to being a “grave threat to the liberties of all Missourians.” They appear to be businesses making choices, applying to all without discrimination that they best believe will provide for the safety of their business, their employees and customers. Actually, they appear to be very consistent with the things an Ole Seagull thought Seitz stood for before witnessing his actions at the August 10 board of aldermen’s meeting and reading the Piece.

He finds it, to use Seitz’s word, “incredulous” that he requests “that the governor call the legis-

Night of the Tiger welcomes Hollister students back to class

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Hollister schools welcomed students and their families to a new school year at the annual Night of the Tiger on Tuesday, August 17.

The district’s early childhood, elementary, middle school and high school buildings held open house starting at staggered times through the evening so families with students of various ages could tour the facilities and meet teachers.

Along with the open house, families visited booths around the track and football stadium to learn about services and resources, while the kids enjoyed inflatables, got their faces painted, played games, and watched the amazing Frisbee skills of Diskey, the Wonder Dog. Attendees could enjoy a plate of barbecue, crab dip, Italian food, salads, and more, plus too many desserts to count. Top restaurant honors of the night went to Mr. Gilberti’s Place.

Any family can access resources for specific needs by talking with their child’s building administrators. A couple of families new to the district expressed their amazement at the community support and how welcome they felt. One dad commented, “My kids are actually looking forward to Monday.”

14th annual car show takes place this weekend

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer A Branson tradition is back this weekend with the 14th An-

nual Sleds Midwest Car Show.

Deemed “A Car Show to Remember,” the event is slated for

August 20-22.

The weekend car show will offer a variety of fun activities, including a dam cruise, door prizes, a flame-throwing contest and more.

The Show and Shine, featuring dozens of pre-1976 hot rods and custom cars, trucks and motorcycles, is set for Friday and Saturday. The show is open to the public on Friday from 12 noon until 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An awards presentation is scheduled for Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

Haygoods are grateful for nearly 30 years of success

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer One of Branson’s hottest shows just keeps getting hotter.

The Haygoods, a family of hugely talented siblings, began

their Branson career nearly 30 years ago.

“We have been performing in Branson for 30 years as of next year,” said Timothy Haygood.

“And the amazing part about that is that our youngest cast member, Catherine, is 30 years old! We have been at the Clay Cooper Theater for eight years now. The run

at Clay Cooper Theater has been the most successful in the history of our show.”

This year, a year following the chaos of 2020, is unmatched, according to Timothy. “The 2021 season is our best on record ever,” Haygood noted. “We sold out over 60 performances back to back and have been routinely turning away more than 100 people on the waiting list who could not get tickets.”

The Haygoods continue to enjoy unequaled success in Branson because of their tremendous talent, their passionate work ethic, and

their solid commitment to completely changing their show twice per year.

What is new in the Haygoods’ 2021 show?

er with dually wheels, headlights, blinkers, a horn and now tops out at 45 miles per hour.”

Other additions to the 2021 show include a new pop party section and a new tap number with upside down tap dancing and fire jets.

Catherine, the only sister in the family, as always plays a major role in this year’s show.

Said Timothy, “We have a brand new Catherine feature where she plays four instruments back to back and a brand new harp number featuring Cat playing “Let it Go” from Disney, while floating on a cloud of fog.”

Other highlights of this year’s show, according to Timothy, include, “New acoustic section featuring the Weissenborn slide guitar, new songs and gags for the kiss cam. And, the flying jetpack, guitar-playing robot now flies all around the stage with four new LED screens backing

him up. We have a new patriotic finale, as well.”

Timothy was quick to note that many traditional show favorites remain.

“The fire stomp tap number is always in the show, but it has been completely redone. The battle between Banjo Boy and Dominic, banjo versus fiddle, is still in the show, but all the songs have been swapped out. Even though there are always some core segments that remain in the show, we always tweak and change them as much as we can, every year,” said Timothy.

Though we are still enjoying warm summer temperatures, the Haygoods are already in rehearsals for their Christmas shows, which will include many new musical selections.

Timothy shared, “We are swapping out five new musical numbers and adding some new ideas and special effects no one has ever seen anywhere. Our lighting genius, electrical engineer Michael,

and his team, have been very hard at work on new ideas for Christmas. Michael has a team of engineers that just work on new technology and ideas every day.”

When not working on their show, the family continues to release new music for the enjoyment of their fans. The Haygoods have worked diligently with a Hollywood producer on a new music video, set to come out in two weeks. The family often releases new music on such platforms as Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and Instagram. Additionally, a new studio album is set for release within the next 30 days.

When asked if there was any news on the personal front that the Haygoods would like to share, Timothy noted, “Our brother, Matthew, is still single. Nonprofit partners with churches to help end poverty

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer A local nonprofit is teaming up with area churches to better meet the needs of those in the Branson region.

Elevate Branson, one of the strongest of the local outreach programs, offers a variety of services within the Branson community. The nonprofit is now partnering with local

churches to more effectively serve those in need.

“We are trying to collaborate with churches to address the issue of people going church to church, looking

for help and a handout,” explained Matt Grindstaff, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships. “Oftentimes it falls to the church secretary or pastor to determine if they can offer assistance because it is true that some people go from church to church looking for help. We want

to help the churches effectively deal with this issue. Many churches have a benevolence fund, but a more effec-

tive use would be to direct these individuals to Elevate so that we can do an intake assessment and determine how to best help them. Too often, to simply give money is a way that allows them to continue a destructive lifestyle.”

Under Elevate Branson’s proposal, area churches would each give $100 per month – only $1,200 per year – to help Elevate Branson help others, as they lift that burden from the individual churches.

“That allows Elevate to effectively work with those individuals and families and direct them to resources that can truly help them move out of poverty,” Grindstaff noted. “It would be impossible for a church to create a program, hire a staff person or recruit volunteers for $1,200 a year. With our program, they would simply refer those individuals and families to Elevate, as we begin to SEE ELEVATE, PAGE 15

case manage these folks to determine how to best help them, via our rewards program, thrift store, and/or our partnership with over 108 different nonprofit agencies.”

In the early stages of meeting with churches, Elevate Branson has already partnered with one church, and others are expressing sincere interest.

Said Grindstaff, “Currently, Grace Family Church has come onboard and supports us monthly. Dennis Webb from New Beginnings has indicated that he’d like to be a part of this, as well. If we had all of our area churches, collectively, become a partner with Elevate, we could end the cycle of people going church to church, looking for handouts, and direct them to Elevate so we could best determine how to help them.

Grindstaff explained that while some churches do, already, support Elevate Branson with a modest donation each month, participation in this project would be a collective

approach to helping end poverty in our community. Response to the proposal had been positive, according to Grindstaff.

“People love the idea. Many pastors understand the struggle between offering help and perpetuating entitlement,” said Grindstaff. “So this is a new and novel approach to this issue that is so prolific, not just in our community, but nationwide. At Elevate, we’ve been serving our local population in poverty since 2008.

We have our rewards program that allows individuals the opportunity to work on our campus to earn a voucher with which they can buy a meal or go out to our thrift store to purchase what they need. Our goal is to help restore the dignity that comes from working to earn what you or your family may need” In addition to the Rewards program and the thrift shop, Elevate Branson also has a cafe, “Neighbor’s Hub,” that is open to the public and used for on-the-job training for those entering the local foodservice industry. They have a job training

program, Elevate Work, designed to help clients find and retain meaningful work. They offer a telemedicine room where clients can virtually see a doctor instead of going to the emergency room. Elevate also serves as a site where community professionals can meet with and assist those in need of their services – such as an enhancement specialist from Burrell that assists with needs regarding food stamps, Medicaid and Medicare.

“We also have the Department of Family Service, which comes five times a week, and we have an organization called Creating Parent Readiness that comes about 10 times a month,” Grindstaff explained. “WIC comes twice a month, as well, and we hold two literacy classes every week.”

Elevate Branson keeps a close count of the number of people that they help each month.

Grindstaff shared, “We range from 500 to 550 assists monthly. An assist is anything we can do to help individuals who come to us. It can be any need from needing to work to

purchase something from the thrift store to being evicted.”

Grindstaff’s hope is that churches will see the benefit in partnering with Elevate to help them meet the needs of the community.

“This program should allow all our area churches to collaborate with Elevate Branson in our united approach to poverty. We don’t want to perpetuate it, but without dealing with the root of it, oftentimes poverty becomes

Shepherd of the Hills Humane Society holds ‘arresting’ fundraiser

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer The Shepherd of the Hills Humane Society is in need of new kennels for the dogs in their care, and the organization is doing some creative fundraising to be able to make the purchase.

“We have used the same kennels for the last several years,” explained Alicia Mason, Operations Coordinator for the Shepherd of the Hills Humane Society. “These kennels have been patched and pieced together for long enough. We are hosting a fund-

raiser from now until September 16 to raise money to purchase a brand new kennel system for our facility. These kennels are designed for buildings that were never designed to house animals (like ours.). They will be much more comfortable and sanitary for our furry friends.”

In order to raise the needed funds, the Humane Society will be “locking up” members of the Branson community. Each person who has agreed to be locked up has been challenged with raising money –

at least $1,000 apiece. All money raised will go toward the purchase of the new kennel system, a cost of $30,000.

“You can go to our website, www. bransonhumanesociety.com, to see who will be thrown in the doghouse and to donate for their bail,” said Mason.

Everyone is invited to attend an evening of fun on September 16 at Hollister’s Seven Arrows Taproom, in celebration of their fundraising efforts, as well as to see who gets bailed out of jail. The event, set for 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., will also feature live music by Matteson Gregory. Andi’s Snack Shack food truck will be on hand selling delicious treats. Those bringing a donation for the Humane Society will receive $1 off drinks at the Seven Arrows Taproom on that evening.

A separate event, a Pre-Kennel Lock-In, is set for Saturday, August 28, from 5 to 7 p.m., also at the Sev-

en Arrows Taproom, located at 260 Birdcage Drive in Hollister. Everyone is encouraged to drop by, see some of the Humane Society’s adoptable dogs, and help raise the needed funds for their kennels.

Representative Seitz, Senator Moon stand against mandates

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer State Representative Brian Seitz and Senator Mike Moon joined hundreds of patriots recently outside of Springfield’s Mercy Hospital where many took a stand against vaccine and masking mandates.

Employees of the Mercy Health Care System will be required to receive vaccinations against COVID-19, effective September 30 of this year. This new edict was issued amidst reports of COVID-19 and the Delta variant continuing to spread throughout Missouri.

The peaceful protest included healthcare workers and other Mercy employees, along with other supporters, many carrying signs with such messages as “Stop the Jab,” “Stop Medical Tyranny” and “Medical Freedom is a Human Right.”

“Our healthcare workers and employees in all other industries should not be forced to choose between their job and a jab,” said

Representative Seitz. “Getting the vaccine and wearing a mask are personal decisions that each individual should be able to make for themselves, in consultation with their families and their doctors.

No one should be forced or coerced into making these medical

decisions.”

Seitz continued, “We must confront tyranny, wherever it is found, be that in government or the private sector, and I will proudly fight alongside you as we say ‘No’ to these Draconian mandates.

Enough is enough.”

Fourteen states file brief in support of College of the Ozarks Submitted to Branson Globe Fourteen states, four organizations and three universities filed briefs in support of College of the Ozarks in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.

Within the last two weeks, support for College of the Ozarks has poured in as the 8th Circuit granted the College’s request to expedite the case after a lower court’s dismissal. The Attorneys General of Missouri, Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana, Nebraska, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia submitted a brief supporting College of the Ozarks and asking for a reversal of the lower court’s decision.

In their brief, the states “urge the Court to apply traditional standing requirements and reverse the district court’s error-laden decision, which applies a selectively narrow view of religious organizations’ standing to challenge federal rules that directly interfere with the free exercise of their faith.”

Peer Missouri institutions, Hannibal-LaGrange University, Missouri Baptist University, Southwest Baptist University, as well as The Christian Life Commission of the Missouri Baptist Convention, filed a separate brief. The Institute for Faith and

Family, America First Legal, and Mountain State Legal Foundation filed separate briefs this week as well.

Missouri law enforcement reminds motorists to drive sober or get pulled over Submitted to Branson Globe As the 100 deadliest days of summer come to an end, highway safety officials are encouraging drivers to not let down their guard. Highway fatalities continue to be on the rise with a focus on four risky behaviors: not wearing a seat belt, cellphone use while driving, excessive speeds, and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

From August 20 through Labor Day, law enforcement agencies across Missouri will participate in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over impaired driving campaign. The campaign has one objective: keep impaired drivers off the roadways.

“Impaired driving continues to be a huge concern on Missouri roadways,” said Capt. John Hotz, director of the public information and education division of the Missouri State High-

way Patrol. “Every year, we lose around 200 people because of this deadly decision. We will continue our year-round efforts of enforcing Missouri’s DWI laws and use this campaign to create more public awareness regarding the dangers and consequences of impaired driving.”

In 2020, there were 217 people killed and 713 people seriously injured in Missouri crashes resulting from impaired driving.

During the 2020 Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, law enforcement officers in Missouri made 213 DWI arrests, 45 DUI drug arrests and 12 arrests for minors in possession.

“Each day, lives are lost or drastically changed in preventable traffic crashes caused by poor choices, including impaired driving,” said Jon Nelson, assistant to the state highway safety and traffic engineer for the Missouri Department

of Transportation.“It’s a selfish choice and, too often, a choice that instantly impacts other people. We all have a shared responsibility to use the roadways in a safe manner, and it’s not

Peach Pound Cake by Everyday Eileen

By Kerry Dawn Green Ingredients: 1 cup butter or margarine, softened 2 cups white sugar 4 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups fresh peaches, pitted and chopped Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Butter a 10” tube pan and coat with white sugar. (Yes, white sugar!)

2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well with each addition,

then stir in the vanilla.

3. Reserve 1/4 cup of flour for later, and sift together the remaining flour, baking powder and salt.

Gradually stir into the creamed mixture. Use the reserved flour to coat the chopped peaches, then fold the floured peaches into the batter.

Spread evenly into the prepared pan.

4. Bake for 60 to 70 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean. Allow cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.

For sauce you can puree some peaches, add 2 tablespoons cornstarch and cook on low until thick.

Serve as sauce over cake. Enjoy!

A rainbow of danger

By Stephanie Barney, Owner, Lightspeed Electric The ‘70s and ‘80s were a colorful time with tie-dye shirts, neon colors, and bell bottom pants … and color-coded circuit breakers.

At the time, breaker handles were color coded to help identify the different amperage ratings. These colored breakers now assist homeowners in identifying obsolete or dangerous panels that are beyond their years in safety.

Why are they dangerous? Many of these breakers have internal flaws in the spring mechanism that makes the breaker trip upon reaching a certain heat rating. Testing procedures were not as thorough 50 years ago, and several panels were allowed to be manufactured that were later recalled or discontinued due to safety.

Haygood added, “There are nine grandchildren now, among all of the brothers. And, our brother, Michael is working on national and international lighting projects after the success of the Branson Ferris Wheel, and many other big architectural lighting projects.”

The Haygoods have enjoyed unprecedented success in Branson during their tenure. The siblings, however, remain thankful to those who have helped them make their dreams come true.

Branson City Hall receives Distinguished Budget Award for seventh year in a row Submitted to Branson Globe For the seventh consecutive year, the City of Branson, municipal government, has received the Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget. The award reflects the commitment of the Finance Department and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.

In order to receive the budget award, the organizations had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation.

These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy doc-

ument, financial plan, operations guide and a communications device.

There are four areas and more than 20 criteria upon which the document is rated.

In order to receive the award, budgets must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and the mandatory criteria within those categories in order to receive the award.

Barry, Stone county routes scheduled for resurfacing beginning week of August 23 Submitted to Branson Globe Drivers can expect lane closures and occasional traffic delays on various routes in Barry and Stone Counties for a resurfacing project beginning the week of August 23, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

Routes impacted by this project: • Stone County Route OO between Missouri Route 13 in Kimberling City to end of state maintenance • Missouri Route 76 in Stone

County between Flat Creek Road west of Cape Fair to Missouri 173 • Barry County Route J between Missouri Route 86 south of Golden to end of state maintenance Contractor crews will work during daytime hours to install a new asphalt driving surface.

In addition, Route OO will have new guardrail installed in areas.

Traffic Impacts: • Traffic reduced to one lane where contractor crews are

laying asphalt • Drivers will encounter flaggers and pilot cars where crews are working. Drivers should wait for the pilot car before proceeding through the work zone or before en-

tering the work zone from a side road.

• Work will be done during daytime hours, all lanes open to traffic at night • No signed detour • Drivers should find alternate

Doggie Swim Night at AquaPlex Sept. 6 Submitted to Branson Globe Furry four-legged friends are invited to the Branson AquaPlex on Monday, September 6, 2021, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for the Branson Parks & Recreation’s annual Doggie Swim night, an end-of-season event for dogs to play fetch, paddle around in the shallow end or take a plunge off of the diving board at the pool.

Each dog must have their own handler and dogs must remain on a leash while on deck. Guests are encouraged to bring their own balls or toys to use in the pool. There is

an $8 fee that includes entry for one dog and one human companion. If you register before September 6, 2021, it is only $6. Additional spectators will pay $2 per person.

Back to school: Red Cross offers 10 tips to keep children safe

Submitted to Branson Globe Many schools will be going back to classroom learning this fall, and the American Red Cross wants to make sure your student is safe as they head back to school for the upcoming year.

“Parents and kids are both eager

to get back to normal and return to the classroom as a new school year starts,” said Stacy Burks, executive director of the Southern Missouri Chapter. “But don’t forget to make safety a top priority.”

1. If your student rides a bus to school, they should plan to get to their bus stop early and stand away from the curb while waiting for the bus to arrive.

2. Students should board the bus only after it has come to a complete stop and the driver or attendant has instructed them to get on. They should only board their bus, never an alternate one.

3. All students should stay in clear view of the bus driver and never walk behind the bus.

4. Cross the street at the corner, obey traffic signals and stay in the crosswalk.

5. Never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

6. If children go to school in a car, they should always wear a seat belt. Younger children should use car seats or booster seats until the lap-shoulder

belt fits properly (typically for children ages 8-12 and over 4 ft. 9 in.) and ride in the back seat until they are at least 13 years old.

7. If a teenager is going to drive to school, parents should mandate that they use seat belts. Drivers should not use their cell phone to text or make calls, and avoid eating or drinking while driving.

8. Some students ride their bike to school. They should always wear a helmet and ride on the right, in the same direction as the traffic is going.

9. When children are walking to school, they should only cross the street at an intersection, and use a route along which the school has placed crossing guards.

10. Parents should walk young children to school, along with children taking new routes or attending new schools, at least for the first week to ensure they know how to get there safely. Arrange for students to walk to school with a friend or classmate.

In addition, parents of younger kids and those headed to school for the first time, should also take a few special steps. Make sure the child knows their phone number, address, how to get in touch with their parents at work, how to get in touch with another trusted adult and how to dial 911. Teach children not to talk to strangers or accept rides from someone they don’t know.

Drivers should be aware that children are out walking or biking to school and slow down, especially in residential areas and school zones. Motorists should know what the yellow and red bus signals mean. Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is getting ready to stop, and motorists should slow down and be prepared to stop.

“The thing that’s happening with delta is that it’s so much more transmissible that the rates in some regions have passed where they were in the winter,” said Dr. Clay Dunagan of the St. Louis Metropolitan Pandemic Task Force.
