Held at Branson’s RecPlex, the Doggie Dive-In offered an evening of swimming, diving and frolicking as dogs and their handlers took

over the AquaPlex. This year 105 dogs and 167 handlers showed up on Labor Day evening to enjoy the more than 12,000 square feet water park, up 15 dogs from 2020.

According to park business supervisor Carlie Allison, this popular event has been a favorite of

dogs and their people since it began in 2009.

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer As the world, collectively, remembers the tragic events of 9/11, Branson will be the site of a number of remembrance observations as our city pays homage to those lives cut short on September 11, 2001.

The Branson Veterans Task Force, with help from Tom Brett and The Brett family, will host Branson Remembers, a moving ceremony to honor those who lost their lives 20 years ago in the 9/11 tragedy. This special observance, set for Saturday, September 11, will be held in front of the fountains at the Branson Landing and will celebrate the nearly three thousand lives lost on September 11, 2001, in a powerful tribute of remembrance. Keynote speaker will be Mayor Larry Milton. The event begins at 6 p.m., and all are invited to attend.

Branson High School homecoming week events

Submitted to Branson Globe Branson High School’s Homecoming Week 2021 is September 13-17 and Welcome to the Jungle is this year’s theme. The homecoming parade and rally is scheduled for Wednesday, September 15, at the Branson Landing. Branson High School’s sports teams, cheerleaders, coaches, marching band and queen candidates will leave the north parking lot, near Belk Department Store, and parade to the Landing fountains, where a pep rally

will commence. The event begins at 8 p.m., and the public is invited to attend.

The Branson Education Foundation will host a homecoming tailgate dinner fundraiser prior to the homecoming football game on September 17.

The event will be held in the Branson High School Freshman Commons from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. Grab-and-go style box dinners will be served, including a BBQ sandwich, baked beans, coleslaw, chips, bottled water and a cookie. Tickets are $8 for

She and husband Travis operate a Branson West food truck offering delicious Mexican food. Opened in June, the Palmers’ new food truck offers Southern California style Mexican food, burgers, chili and tamales. Although the food truck is new, Jody Palmer’s service to her community is not.

“We started out delivering family-style meals to friends and acquaintances in the area as we saw a need for delivery for hard-working families that needed a break feeding the family at the end of the day,” Jody explained. “Then, during Covid, I began delivering to people who were quarantined or just afraid to go out. We did this totally free. Being a retired nurse administrator in California for 25 years, I knew the risk that Covid posed to our senior population and vulnerable adults in the Ozarks and just wanted to do my part to help out. Prior to Covid, I had been delivering food to people that were sick, had cancer, were homebound, etc., totally free of charge, as well. People then started asking me if I’d cook for them, for money, and started pushing us to get a

food truck or a restaurant.”

Jody and Travis moved to the Branson West area nearly four years ago.

“Prior to coming to Branson West, I suffered a severe accident, permanently disabling me and taking me out of the nursing career I’d worked so hard for,” recalled Palmer. “With no income except my husband’s, we were left with the challenge of losing everything or moving. So, we did just that.

We believe God led us here. About five years prior, I had been sent on a nurse’s retreat by my employer, to Big Cedar Lodge, and absolutely loved the area. I ended up flying my husband out here, as I wanted him to see it. He, too, fell in love with the area, and we decided that one day we would retire here.

We felt it was an area where we could still be Americans, love God and love our neighbors. California just wasn’t that way any longer.

So, after five surgeries and being unable to work, and my husband taking time off to care for me, we were in danger of losing our home.

Before that happened, we sold and came to Branson West. It was the best decision we ever made. We love this community.”

CoxHealth welcomes pediatric neurologist to Branson Submitted to Branson Globe Cox Medical Center Branson is expanding specialty services for its youngest patients by adding a pediatric neurologist to the care team.

Dr. James Collins is seeing patients in the Outpatient Center and is excited to help families work through what can be a difficult diagnosis. “Neurological disorders can be very scary,” he says.

“That’s why I keep a really open approach to educate families and incorporate them into the decision making. I want everyone to feel good about the direction of care.”

Pediatric neurology includes care for a wide range of disorders, but includes Cerebral Palsy, neuromuscular disorders, epilepsy, developmental disorders, headaches, etc. Dr. Collins, who has spent the past ten years at a prac-

tice in Springfield, says the new clinic in Branson will be a blessing to families who’ve had to commute for such specialized care. “If you’ve needed these services, you know how tricky it can be to find a good fit that’s close to home,” he says. “I hope the convenience of this clinic will be huge to those families.”

During medical school at the University of Cincinnati, he says choosing to work with children was a “no brainer” because he enjoys watching young patients succeed. “I remember caring for babies in the NICU who are now grown up and thriving. That’s what motivates me – to help piece together the puzzle and see my patients well.”

Car show to benefit Hollister Tiger Band Submitted to Branson Globe The Hollister High School Tiger Band will host their first annual car show this Saturday, September 11, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sponsored

by Tri-Lakes Rat Rods and Customs Car Club, also located in Hollister, the event will help raise much-needed funds to take the band to Indianapolis, Indiana, for the Bands of America Grand Nationals Competition this November.

Since the beginning of time, there has been a struggle between good and evil. Children need to be told that God wants good for everyone. Satan is the author of evil. All people have to choose which they will follow. No choice means that people just do what they feel like doing and that is usually bad. It is the condition of the heart that determines our actions. No law can make people be good on the inside. Love cannot be legislated. We hope our children will choose good, but as parents, we must teach them what is good

It is natural for children to ask why God lets bad people hurt others. The answer is that God can do everything but one thing.

He created us so that we have the right to choose. He cannot choose for us. If He could, we would be like puppets. He wants us to choose the good and not the bad. He sees everything, and

It is impossible to completely shield children from all bad news. We may succeed in keeping part of it away from them, but as they grow older, they will hear more and more. It takes wisdom to know the amount of information to give children.

Some children are able to handle more than others at certain ages. The parent is in the best position to know what a child can process. It is better to help a child with understanding rather than just leave it for the child to have to face alone in the future.

To ignore the bad news completely leaves a child wondering and often confused.

There is no doubt that our children have a great challenge in their future. We need to do all

A vehicle breaks down, a relationship ends, a loved one passes, a child grows up and moves away. But we are sorely mistaken if we ever think we can completely rely on anything in this world. As long as our strength is found in the things that have come to pass, we’ll always feel like our lives are simply a culmination of losses.

It’s hard not to become guarded

in life, putting up walls to protect our hearts from the inevitable loss that happens so often. These actions are based in fear. I know that because this is a familiar struggle for me. The difficulty is knowing how to accept the reality that all earthly things have come to pass, while maintaining a sense of peace and hopefulness. But I have an anchor who holds in spite of the storm raging around me. He promised to never leave me or forsake me. He is God from everlasting to everlasting. He was there when I took my first breath, and He will

be here when I take my last. Whatever I thought was gain I count as loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Him. “Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Reflections: Casting out the scoffer

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Am I seeing all the wrong stuff on social media, or have comments and posts really gone downhill over the last couple of years, with downright nastiness making civil discourse next to impossible when viewpoints don’t exactly agree?

My Bible study includes a guided devotional on weekdays, a Psalm reading plan on Saturdays, and on Sundays, the chapter of Proverbs that corresponds to the date of the month. Sunday, August 22, found me staring at Proverbs 22:10, “Cast out the scoffer, and contention will leave; yes, strife and reproach will cease.”

It didn’t take long in my concordance to find plenty of other verses indicating that scoffers cause trouble.

By Joshua Heston, editor-in-chief, StateoftheOzarks Media & Design So, I was driving the Missouri backroads near the Arkansas state line the other afternoon and saw, while rounding a bend near a weathered barn and big pile of red dirt, an abandoned semi-truck trailer upon which was emblazoned the name “Maersk.”

The still-shiny steel was rusting at the corner points, and I think somebody may have been using it as a chicken coop.

Maersk, if you’re unfamiliar, is a multi-billion-dollar transnational corporation based in Denmark. Clearly, the mark of globalism had found its way to the Ozarks … but perhaps not in the way its makers intended.

The Ozarks’ summer sun was hot. Foxtail swayed in the grader ditches. Outside, beyond the hills, was a world in

panic. A world that goes mad with each news cycle. Layers of fear, hatred, anger, confrontation. Wills collide. Dreams die. So do people. It affects us all; there is no question.

Regionalism is almost a dirty word these days as we are exhorted by media and marketing and a great global narrative to “get with the times.”

Product moves faster that way. We buy more when we’re stressed. It’s only human nature.

But in the end, the turning summer sun, the swaying foxtail, and the wandering chickens may have it right. It is the little things, the forgotten things, the “not-important-things” which have survived forever. Watching from the ditches of a thousand years past, those are the things that do not change, ever-watching the rise and set of empires.

I took a deep breath. And drove on around the bend.

The following Sunday, I read Proverbs 29:8, “Scoffers set a city aflame, but wise men turn away wrath.”

There must be a better way, and I think the Apostle Paul found it.

In Athens, he engaged in conversation with philosophers who were all about the latest ideas (Acts 17).

They worshiped so many gods, they even had an altar to “the unknown god,” so they didn’t accidentally offend one. Paul could have laughed at their trepidation, but instead, he took it as an opening to introduce the true God and the gospel of Jesus Christ, using examples from history and even some of the Greek poets. When he got to the part about Jesus’ resurrection, “some mocked”—another term for scoffing (v. 32). But oth-

ers wanted to hear more, and some became believers (v. 34), likely a much better outcome than if he had argued or made fun of them.

I’ve been trying to practice Paul’s approach when I’m on social media, and frankly, it’s hard. Some people just say the stupidest stuff! And I’m pretty sure my spiritual gift is sarcasm. (See what I did there?) I try to remember, though, that those commenting are people for whom Jesus died. And while a little sarcasm isn’t always a bad way to point out logical fallacies, it is possible to engage in respectful discourse as Paul did.

Making thoughtful comments or admitting my own need for further research has started some decent conversations with people I disagree with, and we both learned from it.

Peter’s Pentecost sermon is another good example: Peter cleared up a misunderstanding (he wasn’t drunk), and he referred to a source they respected (the prophet Joel), but he also stated clearly and directly what they needed to do.

Sometimes, though, just backing out of the conversation is the best option, as Proverbs says. Even Jesus told his disciples there would be times they should just move on.

We can’t always physically “cast out” the scoffer, but we don’t have to waste time with them. We can set parameters when leading a meeting or discussion. But above all, we can ask the Holy Spirit for discernment and guidance, striving for conversations that result in people turning to God.

suggested that Jody offer her delectable meals for sale, she wanted to do just that but couldn’t quite find a way.

Said Palmer, “Being disabled, I didn’t think it was a possible task until my husband decided he wanted to do it full-time. He wanted to carry over what I had been doing in the community, and with support from our friends and neighbors in the area, he really felt that, with my help, he could share my recipes and community

togetherness with everyone else in the area by opening a food truck.

But we both felt it would never be successful if we didn’t continue to give back to local families in the area, so that is a huge part of what we do. We truly believe in giving back to the community that we live in, so as part of our business, we have a program called ‘Feeding our Friends,’ which allows a family of four to come and eat a full taco dinner, free of charge, no questions asked. Customers donate $20 towards a ‘taco family’ to place on the wall for someone else to use, free of charge. In return,

we give that person 50% off of their meal in appreciation of their donation. We have fed dozens of local families. Recently, we were also able to collaborate with the Make A Wish Foundation and host a wish reveal for a local 16-yearold and his family. It was truly an honor, and we are blessed to have been a part of this event.”

Palmer continued, “We also collaborate with Natalie Merritt at Open Hearts Open Hands and Carrie Masters at Hair by the Lake. Natalie began a movement, ‘makeadifference365’, and we loved the idea and so did Carrie.

Natalie has a food pantry at her store and gives away free clothing to the needy. Carrie has a free haircut program for school-aged children, and we, of course, have our Feeding our Friends program. So, in one day, a family could go pick out some free outfits for the kids, swing by and get a haircut, then have lunch at The Taco Lady, all for free!”

Palmer noted that their Feeding our Friends program is meant to be a hand up, not a hand out.

“Our program is meant for folks who, at the end of the week, get paid and barely have enough to put gas in the car,” said Palmer. “We

aren’t looking to help the homeless, but instead appreciate those trying to earn an honest living and raise families the right way.”

Though good deeds often go unnoticed, Palmer was recently recognized for her selflessness when she was nominated for Remarkable Woman of Ozarks, and was featured on KOLR 10 television as one of the top four finalists.

Upcoming banquet to fund scholarships

Said Katie Young, Social Media Engineer from The Brook Wellness Center, “This will be our third annual Heart for Recovery Banquet. We’ve held one every year since opening, with the exception of last year, due to Covid restrictions.

September is National Recovery Month, which is why we choose to hold this event annually in September.”

National Recovery Month is

designed to educate all on substance use treatment and mental health services which can allow those with mental disorders or substance use issues to live rewarding lives.

Community businesses and residents are invited and encouraged to help support this annual event through a variety

Thousands of lives were lost and many more were changed forever by the events of that September morning. It was a day that will be forever etched in the minds of Americans everywhere. Country superstar Alan Jackson recorded a song commemorating the significance of that day, posing the question “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning?”

Branson Globe readers shared where they were and what thoughts went through their minds when they heard the news on the solemn morning of 9/11.

• Linda Lee Vivian shared, “I was in my travel trailer in Houghton Lake, Michigan. We woke up and turned the TV on and saw what happened in New York City. The first thing my husband thought of was packing up and getting back down state because he was afraid

there wasn’t going to be any gas available. I was shocked by the event but I didn’t act with such concern as my husband. I tried to be the level-headed one in this situation. I thought we were safer where we were.”

• Entertainer James Marvell recalled, “News was everywhere. I was caught up in the surprise that it was really happening. It didn’t feel real at first as I was following it from Tampa, Florida.

• Branson resident Bev Eugenio remembered, “My husband, myself and our three children were at home in Wright City, Missouri. My son, Micah, who was 13, came running into our room and shouted out ‘We are at war!’ It caught us off guard.

We went to the living room to watch TV just in time to see the second plane crash into the second tower. Needless to say, we were in shock. We began to pray and continued to watch

• Reader Carolyn Schultz was on a military base when she received the news. “I was in Camp Pendleton, California, with my daughter and my Marine son-in-law,” explained Schultz. “I was up all night watching my newborn granddaughter as she had some issues, and I had the TV on. I saw the planes as they hit. Needless to say, Camp Pendleton was never the same after that.”

• Truck driver Travis Cook recalls, “I was actually sleeping when the first plane hit and got a phone call from some friends, telling me about it. I went down to the café, and we watched the towers fall from there. I was in New York a week after it happened, and the crater was still smoking.”

• America’s Best Campground owner Sue Alkire was escorting a large group of Branson visitors when she heard the news. Said Alkire, “We had a group in the park scheduled to go to “50s at the Hop.” There was a discussion as to whether the theater would hold the show or cancel it. They chose to hold it. I will always remember Jeanna Kilbane addressing the tragedy and holding a moment of silence. If we cancel life, the enemy wins.”

Bob and Deborah Hrabak, were in the Branson area, visiting from Wisconsin on September 11, 2001. Deborah remembered, “Bob and I were in Silver Dollar City campground waiting for the bus to take us to the City. Some other campers were watching it on TV and told us. We didn’t have a radio or TV in our tent. It was awful.

We didn’t want to believe the news. When in the City, it was somber and quiet. We were told that some of the local gas stations were raising the gas prices to unbelievable heights.

We left for home the next day, cutting our vacation short, and hoping we would be able to get gas all the way home.”

• Branson’s Annette Wood remembers that fateful day. Said Wood, “I had just gotten to work at the Radisson. I went past the employee lounge and saw a lot of my co-workers around the television. I went in to see what was going on because we had groups in house with more coming, and they told me that a plane just hit the Twin Towers.

As we stood in disbelief, the second one hit. The day was gripped in mourning, shock, and we prayed. We made sure our GM, Tammy, knew and we worried about our director on the road. We were there for our customers and the customers that were not able to travel. We will never forget.”

• Branson Globe Staff Writer Cindy Thomas recalls, “We lived near Ft. Leonard Wood, and I was expecting a piano student, whose dad was in the Army, when her mom called to say they couldn’t leave the base.

I turned on the news and was horrified, as well as frightened because our daughter was out of town doing volunteer work and the airports were closing.”

• Globe reader Doug Holtzmann was traveling on that September morning.

Said

Holtzmann, “I was on my way to the airport in St. Louis, headed to Detroit to set up for a conference. Before I made it to the airport, I got a call from the office saying I should head home.

The airport is closed.”

• Crystal Wolfe was also out of town that morning. “I had driven up to St. Louis the day before for a food show. My management staff was flying in from Branson on 9/11, and I was going to pick them up from the St. Louis airport at 10 am at the private airport hangar,” said Wolfe.

“My friend called at 8:30 a.m. to say they were on the plane and would be taking off in a few minutes. I headed to the airport with my favorite CD blasting music on the drive. I arrived a few minutes before 10 and was met by what I thought was a SEE WHERE WERE YOU, PAGE 14

9/11 stair climb set for Saturday at FBC Branson

By K. D. Michaels, Staff Writer Branson First Baptist Church will once again host a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on Saturday.

Traditionally the 9/11 stair climbs were designed as a way to honor the fallen firefighters who gave their life in the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Participants are challenged to climb steps – the equivalent of the 110 flights of stairs in the World Trade Center, as they remember our nation’s fallen heroes.

Locally, the First Baptist Church 9/11 Stair Climb is a way to pay tribute and show support to all of our area’s first responders and front-line workers.

Said FBC Life Center Director, Josh Cerretti, “We hope to honor those who serve our community – and our nation – the firefighters,

police, first responders, nurses and all who serve.”

Branson’s 9/11 Stair Climb is made up of two flights of stairs.

Climbing it 55 times would equal the World Trade Center’s 110 flights of stairs. But attendees don’t have to climb all 110 flights or even climb at all. Some come and climb only a flight or two of stairs. Some climb more, and some just come to enjoy the atmosphere that includes flags and patriotic music, according to Cerretti.

urday, September 11, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the church’s Family Life Center, located at 400 South Sunshine Street in Branson. No registration is necessary, and beverages and snacks will be provided.

“This is our fourth year of doing the Memorial Stair Climb,” Cerretti. “This year, especially, it’s just very important. With all of the chaos going on in our world, in Afghanistan and all over, we’ve just got to honor those people who serve and let them know they are loved, by our church and our community.”

security guard at the hangar entrance shack. He told me to go home. I explained that I was picking up my employees. He then explained that the airport was closed. I argued with him until he reached into my car and ejected the CD so the radio was playing. He explained that New York was under attack and that I needed to go home as fast as I could.

It was then that I noticed he was a National Guard member. I left and called my friend and she explained that they never took off from the airport and everyone was back in Branson. I remember noticing

gas was $1.79 when I left St. Louis because I wasn’t sure if I had enough to get home but decided I could make it. When I arrived back in Branson gas was over $5 a gallon because gas stations were price gouging. A dear friend living in Jersey needed me, and I drove up there 18 days later. His brother and his crew had been at the Twin Towers working to restore power when the tower collapsed. He had gone outside to his truck to get something and his 13-person crew was all killed, but he survived. Twenty years later, and he is still in therapy over the survivor guilt.

Murray was an active Marine at the time, and I froze every time the phone rang because I

knew the Marines were calling to send him overseas. It took me nine years, but on September 11, 2010, I watched the footage of that day for the first time. It made me love my fellow Americans more with every image I saw. Americans rallied from the moment the towers were hit. Each and everyone was on the same team, the same page, the same path to get through the ordeal. No one was alone, everyone loved their neighbors, each and every action was for the betterment of others. America was united on 9/11, and I wish that feeling, attitude and giving were still done each and every day.”

• Reader Brittney Shive recalls, “I was getting ready for elementary school. We were running late, of course, and then I just remember stopping and looking at the news. My mom was horrified. I was too young to really understand it and what an impact it had on our country at the time.”

• Becky Barling was responsible for a group of young people on that day. Said Barling, “I was substitute teaching in seventh that day. It was a rough day. The kids were supposed to write for the first five minutes of class. Kind of like a journal.

I had them all read what they wrote, and we discussed what they were thinking and feeling. I had six different classes that day, and thank goodness I was in the same class room the

next day! It was very profound and a few days of my life that I will never forget! I actually think it was very therapeutic and helped us all.”

• Branson entertainer Georgina Holiday was closer to the center of the action than most of us were on that tragic day.

Holiday recalled, “I was living in Long Island. I worked at an insurance building with 500 employees. Two weeks before 9/11, one of our friends from work had just gotten his dream job in Tower Two. That was the day his life was stolen from us. Another woman in the office lost her father that day. He worked in Tower One. Many people in the office had a loved one that was either police, firefighter, military, EMT and so on. They were all heroes that day! Needless to say, we were getting updates via personal telephone calls. I’ll never forget that fateful moment in history of that first plane hitting.

I have more stories but it still hurts to talk about it.”

and saw the confused coverage of ‘some kind of plane’ hitting a World Trade Center tower. Almost immediately I saw the second plane hit the second tower, and it became obvious that a full-scale terrorist attack was happening. I rushed to the office to jump into coverage of local reaction and was able to speak by phone with our congressman, who was the chair of the House Armed Forces Committee, and

had stayed in his office as the Capitol was evacuated. It was just horrifying and life-changing to see so many people die. Ordinary people from all over the world –spouses, sons, daughters, grandparents, best friends – for a twisted notion of revenge. The U.S. has sins on its head as all great nations do, but the attacks of 9/11 were pure evil. Watching the live feed from New York, the Pentagon, and rural Pennsylvania, all I could say, over and over, was ‘Those poor people. Those poor

families.’ I wish the feeling of unity, nation and community in the aftermath had lasted longer than it did.”

• Branson Globe Publisher Rob Doherty remembers well where he was on that September morning. Said Doherty, “I was working as a Distribution Sales Rep for NAPA (Genuine Parts Company) out of New Orleans.

I was in charge of helping one of my big customers move and revamp his new location from downtown Alexandria, LA, to the main drag. I was in the sales area when someone saw the first plane go into the towers, and then we were glued to the scenes thereafter. I remember being so numb, and the only thing I wanted to do was call my family and all the ones I love.”

• Karen Garrett, a friend and a follower of the Branson Globe, knows exactly where she was on September 11, 2001.

Garrett explained, “On Tues-

day, September 11, I woke up anxious to get ready for work because that was my last day before I started vacation. I glanced at the news headlines on my computer and saw a picture of a plane exploding into the World Trade Center. I honestly thought it was a promo shot for an upcoming movie so I went ahead and got ready. I received a phone call from a co-worker telling me what was going on.

And then he said the words that struck my heart with dread and fear, ‘. . .and a plane just hit the Pentagon.’ I had a dear friend who had been working at the Pentagon as a police officer for five years. I also knew that today was the first Tuesday he had ever been scheduled to work. As I finished getting ready to work, I remembered I had a Pentagon t-shirt I had bought there the year before, when my friend had gotten clearance to get me a private tour of the Pentagon. I

bransonglobe.com headed in to work thinking ‘I dare anyone to tell me I am out of uniform!’ I tried calling my friend, but there was no phone service in the area. I worked but spent as much time as I could watching news reports.

When I made it home there was a 30-second message on my answering machine. ‘I’m tired, but I’m OK. Can’t call for a while’ were the words I heard in the exhausted voice of my dear friend. Knowing he was alive brought me to instant tears of relief and prayers of thankfulness. That is where I was when the world stopped turning for me.”

The Branson Globe staff salutes all the heroes of 9/11 and the men and women who courageously risked their lives to save others. We honor those lives lost 20 years ago and remember the families who were forever changed by the events of September 11, 2001.

Dewey: More than just a cat story

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer I’m an animal lover, so it makes sense that a beautiful golden cat on a book cover would affect me; but “Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World” (2008, Grand Central Publishing, New York) did more. My schoolteacher husband, even though he’s not a cat lover, nabbed the book for me from the Hollister High School library, and I’m glad.

The story opens in 1988 when a very small, very sick kitten was stuffed into the book return slot at the Spencer, Iowa, public

library on the coldest night of the winter. He was found nearly frozen the next morning by library director Vicki Myron, author of “Dewey” with Bret Witter. As Myron nursed the kitten back to health with help from a local veterinarian and library staff, even saving his frost-bitten paws, the cat made it clear he considered life a gift and serving the library his mission.

Over the next months, as he worked his way into the hearts of library patrons and the entire community, a naming contest resulted in the christening of Dewey Readmore Books. (Yes,

Dewey, as in the library classification system.)

It’s clear Dewey was an unusual cat—he greeted patrons at the door, posed for photos, and preferred living in the library even over going home with staff for weekends or holidays—but the reader quickly learns this is not just another feel-good animal story: It’s the essence of life in a Midwest farming community. Woven through the cat’s story are the stories of family farms struggling, or failing, to stay afloat after being forced to borrow outrageous sums to compete against huge agricultural corporations. The story of factories moving in, moving out, jobs coming and going, immigrant labor driving wages down. The author’s story: childhood memories, failed abusive marriage, family tragedy, deter-

mination to get a college degree, and single motherhood to an unresponsive teenager, with a few health issues mixed in. And a cat who, somehow, cared.

Winning hearts of reluctant library board members, helping a special education student feel comfortable in social settings, and making his opinions clear about various types of cat food, Dewey manages to become internationally known through magazine articles and eventually the internet. But he also comes to represent the spirit and determination of small-town, hard-working America. In what seems initially a simple story about a cat, Myron has captured much that is heart-warming, heart-breaking, and relatable.

Old Country Fair Music Festival celebrates Ozarks traditions

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Musicians, music lovers and fans of Ozarks culture enjoyed a day celebrating Ozarks history along with bluegrass and traditional music at the Old Country Fair Music Festival on Saturday, September 4.

Hosted by Weddings at the Homestead in cooperation with the Society of Ozarkian Hillcrofters and Ozark Mountain Music Association, the fair featured historical presentations, food and plenty of music. Admission proceeds will help provide support and scholarships for music camps held annually by Ozark Mountain Music Association. Guests could pull up a chair and listen, or grab their acoustic instrument and join in, at several outdoor jam sessions, or enjoy a break from the heat and hear young local bluegrass bands on the main stage in the event barn. There was also square dancing in the evening, and Ozark Mountain Music alumni held a bluegrass and traditional music workshop for beginners.

The Society of Ozarkian Hillcrofters originated in 1931 for the purpose of caring for the natural beauty of the Ozarks and preserving its history, folklore, and traditions.

They are a frequent partner and strong supporter of Ozark Mountain Music Association whose goal is to “pass it on” by teaching a new generation of young musicians to appreciate and play the traditional

This is accomplished through summer camps as well as special events such as the weekend fair.

Freedom Encounter has presented a patriotic Freedom Journey show for several years as part of Branson’s Veterans Week and is committed to truth in education. The nonprofit is currently developing an interactive museum, kids’ play area, and theatre teaching America’s history of faith

and freedom. “We will bring that message alive with music, lighting, and special effects, not only educating but reaching the heart because this is an emotional subject,” said Myers. “We hope to encourage this generation to be rooted in our history, not be ashamed of the faith of this country, and recognize it’s what made us exceptional and is our only hope for the future.”

Donations were received for Freedom Encounter in lieu of admission fees for Star-Spangled Branson, and proceeds from Freedom Journey shows beginning November 5 as part of Veterans Week will benefit the project as well.

The event closed with a reprise of the National Anthem, with many attendees surprised to stand for the rarely sung fourth verse of the song.

Attendees were enthusiastic about the Saturday event and the planned project. “It was amazing to hear about the museum with like-minded people,” said Carolyn DeJager. “We need to stand together and stand united.”

Josh Huxtable agreed: “A lot of fun and very insightful, hearing how faith plays a big role in our freedom.”

Local leaders in attendance included Councilwoman Ruth Den-

ham and State Representative Brian Seitz. “If we don’t start putting our children first, teaching them about our history, it will be forgotten and our country will crumble,” said Denham. Seitz agreed, stating, “I encourage every Branson resident and visitor to come and enjoy what’s being presented by Branson U.” Emcee Joshua Heston and Branson U’s Pearl Haining were excited about response to the event. “I love seeing the Branson community come

together in positive ways,” said Heston. “Getting to emcee Star-Spangled Branson was absolutely a blast.”

“We were able to raise several thousand dollars for Freedom Encounter and everyone had a great time in the process; so that’s a double win!” said Haining. “I’m grateful to the folks who helped make this happen and, as Branson U grows, I hope we can do something like this again down the road.”

College of the Ozarks hosts ‘resilient’ art exhibit Submitted to Branson Globe College of the Ozarks will display the artistic work of ceramic artist Matt Kelleher, from Sept.

7–Oct. 6, in the Boger Art Gallery. Located inside the Jones Learning Center, the Boger Art Gallery is open Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The exhibit, titled “resilient,” displays a blend of utilitarian pots, vessels and sculptures made at various times over the last year.

“Pottery is a continuous curiosity; how it’s made, how it feels, its shape, its surface, how it exists in a home as an object, or a tool, or maybe an image,” Kelleher stated. “When making pottery, I search for poised forms that suggest sculpture, respect utility, and perform well.”

Matt Kelleher is an associate professor of ceramics at New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. He joined the faculty in 2015 after a decade of working as a studio potter in

the mountains of Western North Carolina. Kelleher has displayed his artwork vastly and lectured both nationally and internationally.

Kelleher has participated in residencies at Penland School of Crafts, Archie Bray Foundation, Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, and Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute. As he continues to create new ceramic pieces, he has expanded his studio practice to include larger sculptural ideas.

FAiTH Community Health transitions leadership Submitted to Branson Globe The Faith Community Health (FAiTH) Board of Directors announced Kenn Tilus’s decision to step down as executive director of the charitable health clinic. Board chair, Pastor Tom Wilcox shared, ”Kenn has always shown a passion for the care of our clients and for the privilege of sharing God’s love through whole person care.”

Wilcox, Pastor to First Presbyterian Church, can recall Kenn’s start with FAiTH and his work in creating FaithCare, a program which works with area businesses to provide quality healthcare for their employees. “I particularly appreciate his work to champion the creation of FaithCare” Pastor Wilcox said. Tilus has served FAiTH since January 2016.

8 in 10 Americans have taken steps to improve their health since the pandemic started

By Good News Network Eight in 10 Americans believe their health is a “work in progress,” and many have been taking steps to improve their lifestyle.

According to a new survey of 13,000 people in 24 countries—including 2,000 in the U.S.—this feeling isn’t unique to Americans.

82 percent of people globally felt the same (compared to 84% of Americans), and 89% of all respondents are currently taking steps to improve their health.

Of those, 81% said the pandemic helped kickstart them into doing so—and these steps are having a clear impact on respondents’ health.

Globally, 56% of respondents can now run or exercise longer without feeling winded, while 48% have gone down a size or a belt notch.

Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Herbalife Nutrition and the Council for Responsible Nutrition, the survey found the average respon-

dent is currently working to break three unhealthy habits.

Results delved into the specific small steps that respondents are taking to do so.

Respondents revealed they started their journey to be healthier by exercising more, cooking/eating more nutritious foods, or downloading a fitness app.

Purchasing less junk food, beginning to take walks during their lunch break, and taking vitamins or supplements were other “first steps” respondents took—or plan to take to support their health.

The survey delved further into vitamins and supplements and found them to be a priority for many respondents across the globe.

When asked about how their health goals have changed during the pandemic, half said they’re more focused on eating healthier, including supplementing their diet with vitamins and minerals.

take vitamins or supplements, results revealed the average respondent spends about $286 every year. Americans were slightly above that, at an average of $304 per year.

“Be it exercising, healthy cooking or including more vitamins and supplements to your routine, for many, the pandemic has provided an opportunity to improve health habits overall,” said Dr. Kent Bradley, chief health and nutrition officer at Herbalife Nutrition. “Consistency is key when one commits to a healthy lifestyle.”

But while many respondents plan to incorporate more vi-

tamins and supplements into their diet, only 69% said they feel knowledgeable about the health benefits those can offer.

Thirty percent of respondents said they are most likely to get information about vitamins and supplements from internet searches, media, and social media, followed by consulting with their doctor (27%).

Regardless of where they currently get information, 77% would like to know more about the nutritional benefits of different vitamins and supplements to support their health.

Ingredients ½ cup pumpkin puree ¼ cup applesauce 3 Tbsp. peanut butter 1 egg 2 cups whole wheat flour ¼ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. baking soda 1. Prepare a sheet pan by lining it with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Using a stand or hand mixer, beat together the pumpkin puree, applesauce, peanut butter and egg.

3. Mix in the whole wheat flour, salt and baking soda. Beat until just combined and then roll out dough on a floured surface.

Knead the dough together if it hasn’t come together all the way.

4. Cut the cookies using a boneshaped cookie cutter and evenly spread them out on the prepared sheet pan.

5. Bake in the oven for 1525 minutes, until they reach your desired level of hardness.

7. Let the treats cool completely before serving to your favorite four-legged person.

To store: Place these in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Missouri doctor: ERs treating people who took ivermectin Submitted to Branson Globe Several people have been treated in Missouri emergency rooms after taking the parasite drug ivermectin, even as experts warn of dangerous side effects and a lack of proof that it helps treat COVID-19.

Dr. Steven Brown told KMOV-TV that cases of ivermectin toxicity have occurred at Mercy hospitals across the state.

Brown is a virtual care physician for Mercy.

“People who are relying upon ivermectin and remaining unvaccinated are under a tremendous false sense of security,” Brown said. “I have seen people with ivermectin toxicity in the emergency room from taking the animal formulation. I’ve seen people who relied on ivermectin to prevent themselves from getting COVID who are on ventilators and who have died.”

A Mercy spokesman on Tuesday said he didn’t have any immediate further information

about the number of illnesses at Mercy hospitals involving ivermectin.

This week, the American Medical Association and two pharmacist groups urged physicians, pharmacists and other prescribers to warn patients against using ivermectin, a decades-old drug used to kill worms and other parasites in humans and animals.

Large studies are underway in the U.S. and overseas to determine if the drug has any effect on preventing or reducing the effects of COVID-19. Ivermectin has been promoted by Republican lawmakers, conservative talk show hosts and some doctors, amplified via social media to millions of Americans who remain resistant to getting vaccinated. It has also been widely used in some other countries such as India and Brazil.

Missouri’s COVID-19 dashboard on Tuesday showed 934 newly confirmed cases, and three more deaths. The state has re-

ported 641,493 confirmed cases and 10,660 deaths since the onset of the pandemic.

Days after Jackson County ordered the closure of Rae’s Café in Blue Springs for failing to adhere to the county’s mask man-

The lake is home to many marinas where patrons can rent boats, jet skis and pontoons. The lake varies according to season for surface water temperature.

• Spring: 56 to 77 F. • Summer: 85 to 90 F.

• Fall: 71 to 82 F. • Winter: 42 to 47 F. This variety of temperatures changes how the bass angler would adapt their fishing tactics, bait types and fishing locations.

Table Rock Lake water clarity is well known to be clear. The normal visibility on the main lake can reach sometimes down 30 to 40 feet. The river arms are more stained with visibility sometimes down to six inches.

Do you resist the abundance of pleasure boats in the summer? Are prime fishing spots always taken before you arrive? Is it just too hot to fish during the day? I have a solution for you – fish at night.

Here on my home waters of Table Rock Lake, I fish year round, day, evening and night, says Chris Gibbons from the Table Rock Lake Fishing Report.

By far, my favorite time to fish Table Rock Lake is at night. Everyone else has already spent the day or evening fishing and are home nicely tucked in bed. That’s when I get up at 3 a.m., hook up the boat, and take off to the ramp.

Night fishing can be challenging.

It can also be a bass catching feast.

Some of the biggest bass I have caught are at night. Bass, especially those big girls, feed at night regularly. I have found that the Small Mouth Bass feed more than Spotted and Large Mouth. The Small Mouth are very aggressive during the night and will strike fast and slow moving baits.

I have three go-to-baits for night fishing: 1. Black spinner bait with a large Colorado blade 2. Black or purple worm on a ½ ounce weight 3. Jig My favorite bait of all is that Black Spinnerbait. Having a large Colorado blade moves a great deal of water around the bait and the bass cannot only feel the water movement, they can see it. Bass use feeling more often than any

other wild animal.

Anglers have all types of ways to fish a spinnerbait at night, but my favorite is reeling slow enough that you feel a slow thump. I call it the thump, thump, thump feeling.

My worm I fish on is a ½-ounce weight, cast, and reel back with the worm never losing contact with the bottom, moving it very slowly.

My jig is moved slowly. I do hop it from time to time, but I’ve learned at night that moving the jig a few inches at a time can sometimes catch larger fish.

I had a friend of mine, Mark Politte, tell me that when jig fishing at night he adds rattles and hops it aggressively to catch bigger bass. He also says during a full moon, he uses a white spinner bait with silver blades. He says they will clobber it.

The bait can be fished two separate ways.

1. Parallel the bank 2. The traditional way is to

set away from the bank and cast in.

My favorite way is to parallel the bank.

Parallel the bank: I set my boat as close to the bank as I can get it; sometimes I can reach out and touch the bank with my hand. I make the forward cast parallel, as close to the bank as I can get. Next, I cast away from the bank about one foot. I will follow that up with another cast five feet from the bank. This technique will target those feeding fish while allowing you to keep the bait in a hot strike zone longer.

in deeper water. You will find when fishing this way sometimes the smaller fish bite more often.

Smaller fish tend to rise in the water column from their holding location. They do this for many reasons but often it’s a method they use to stay clear of the larger fish on the hunt for a quick meal. The smaller fish are targeting a meal from the balls of shad that are found out away from the bank. The smaller fish will seek out a quick meal rising vertically fast and moving back down as soon as they eat something.

The larger fish target the bank as baitfish and crawfish will be in shallow water. A large bass, often a female bass, will target those baitfish shallow and can pin them down to eat.

If you were to take a bright light and shine on the bank at night here on Table Rock Lake, you will find shad scattered on the bank along with a mixture of other smaller fish species.

They don’t tend to ball up on the bank. They are also seeking a meal.
