Autumn Daze is slated for September 16, 17 and 18. The 48th annual Arts, Crafts and Music Festival will feature over 90 vendors with handcrafted items such as jewelry, woodworking, pottery, t-shirts and boutique clothing, quilts, wreaths, candles, soaps and lotions, and much more. The festival will also

include a number of working craftsmen, as many of the vendors will be demonstrating their skills.

Nurse creates 9/11 tribute at Cox Branson

Submitted to Branson Globe Cox Branson nurse Jennifer Ruit is on a mission to make sure folks never forget 9/11.

As the 20th anniversary ap-

proaches, she embarked on a passion project – creating a special memorial wall in the waiting room of the medical center’s Family Medicine & OB clinic.

With piles of paper and a long list of names, she carefully crafted a display to pay tribute to victims we lost at each location: The Twin Towers, the Pentagon and Flight 93.

There’s also a special memorial for fire fighters who died in the attacks.

As the wife of a fire fighter, she thought about the victim’s families as she carefully cut out each piece of the project.

“When I went to print the list of names, it was 60 pages,” she says with a pause. “Sixty pages of people with families who loved them dearly and miss them like crazy. That could have been any one of us.”

As she cut and pasted her vision to life, she couldn’t help but crave one thing for our country right now

– the spirit we had on September 12.

“I was in high school, but I’ll never forget that feeling of unity Americans had the day after the attack,” she says. “There was no left

Submitted to Branson Globe On Friday, Sept. 10, College of the Ozarks held a special ceremony to commemorate the lives of those who perished in the terrorist attacks that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001.

The ceremony was held at the Lest We Forget 9/11 Memorial located next to the College of the Ozarks Fire Department on the College of the Ozarks campus. The campus family and students from School of the Ozarks attended. Veterans, first responders and family members of the fallen were also present.

Bryan Cizek, dean of work education and director of patriotic

activities, gave special remarks.

Cizek served as an Army Ranger in the U.S. Army and is an alumnus of College of the Ozarks.

“We must never forget what happened to us,” Cizek said. “We must never forget the lives lost that day and every day since for the last 20 years in the global war on terrorism. Lest we forget.”

Cizek stated, regarding the fallen: “We have inherited their unfinished business. We must live a life worthy of their sacrifice. That’s what I want to reinforce to you today: finding purpose, unity and strength, out of tragedy, trauma and adversity.”

In his closing remarks, Cizek reflected on his own military service and left the audience with a call to action: “You have no idea how blessed I was to serve this country and the purpose that it gave me. I think we’re all called to sacrifice and commit a great period of our lives to serve a cause greater than ourselves.”

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer An annual event at Branson’s First Baptist Church paid honor to the heroes of 9/11.

First Baptist Church once again held a 9/11 Stair Climb, in honor of the firefighters, first responders and other heroes who worked selflessly to save others on that fateful day.

Nationally, the 9/11 Stair Climb was designed to honor the firefighters and replicates the 110 flights of stairs they climbed in the World Trade Center on that day 20 years ago. Locally the stair climb is a way to offer

thanks and show appreciation to our own heroes – police officers, firefighters, medical personnel and first responders.

According to Josh Cerretti, director of the First Baptist Church Life Center, where the event was held, the turnout was a bit lighter than last year, due in part to the event falling on a weekend. Yet many did show up to participate in the stair climb as a way to pay honor and tribute.

One participant, Samantha Wells noted, “I am climbing to SEE STAIR CLIMB, PAGE 9

Hobby turned into long-term business for one area resident

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Tracy Davis, owner of Leatherworks Unlimited, has been in business in the same Branson location for 45 years, making and selling a variety of handcrafted leather items.

Said Davis, “We make a lot of accessories, a lot of belts, holsters, handbags, and that kind of thing. We do some jackets and outerwear, too. I try to have a wallet like everyone’s old one they got used to! We do some custom items, too, but we try to make up so much stuff ahead of time to have inventory that people can go home with. My belt rack has 300 belts. I’ve got about 200 holsters. We have lots of choices, lots of inventory.”

Davis, who operates Leatherworks Unlimited with the help of two part-time employees, is involved in every aspect of the business, from designing, to creating, and selling the items.

“My introduction to leather-working was in the eighth grade shop class in Hollister,” Davis recalled. “I just ran with it.

In my four years in high school, I actually taught the eighth grade shop class as I had surpassed the teacher by then. It became a hobby, as a kid, that I really couldn’t afford, so I had to peddle my items to shops here in town to buy my supplies. I opened my

business here, in this location, when I was 16.”

Davis explained that, in addition to the items he creates himself, he also carries items from other craftsmen.

“I handle 10 other leather craftsmen’s work besides my own, to come up with as much handmade stuff as we can. We do have some commercial items, but we try to focus on the handmade,” said Davis. “We like quality in all of our items, and we are very particular in what we sell. We are one of the few leather shops that has a workbench.

Most of our competitors sell imported products. The bulk of the industry is all imported.”

Davis noted, while handcrafted leather items are a bit more costly than manufactured items, they far outshine the competition in terms of quality and longevity.

“We make stuff to last,” Davis noted. “That’s why a guy like me

has to be in a tourist area. We’ve got to have fresh faces because the things we sell don’t wear out fast. I have had customers wear a belt for 20 years, unless they’ve grown out of it. The stuff in the stores sometimes doesn’t make it a year. We do a lot of little customer service things, since we make our own stuff. Earlier today, a customer came in wearing a belt I made. I re-waxed it for him. It makes the belt look better and feel better. It’s an easy service I can provide. Sometimes people come to see me every year to get it done, which is good, because they do come back in. About three-fourths of the customers I wait on, I have waited on before over the 45 years.”

By Pat Lamb The three Rs: reading, ‘riting’ and ‘rithmetic’ are still the most important subjects in school because everything else is based on these three things. There are innumerable complaints that children are not learning these things as they should. Help from parents is definitely needed to make sure that children learn these basics.

Parents can help their children learn to be good writers in a number of ways. “Practice makes perfect” certainly applies to writing. Practice helps with both the mechanical aspects of learning to make the letters and the mental organizing and creating of subject matter.

Very young children who have toys requiring the use of motor skills in the hands are more apt to learn to print well using sticks and

is the “five finger rule.” One finger is for the introduction where three points are named. The next finger is for a new paragraph to talk about the first item named.

The next finger represents the next paragraph to talk about the second thing, and the next finger represents another paragraph to talk about the third thing. The last finger is to summarize the essay by restating what was said in the first paragraph. This five-paragraph essay is taught to GED students to write an essay for passing the GED test. (GED is now called HISET for High School Equivalency Test.) The format works in most cases and can also be used as an outline for making a speech.

It is helpful to have a child draw around his/her hand on a piece of paper and label the five fingers for the five paragraphs.

Cursive writing is not given a great deal of emphasis in today’s educational process since it is not used as much as in the past. After all, most job applications say, “Please print,” and computers are available for composing letters and stories. Although it is nice to know cursive writing, limited time in school demands that teachers emphasize subjects that are very practical.

At one time, cursive writing was necessary for taking notes in college classes, but now students can record a lecture or download necessary information on their computers.

By Tiffany Brown, Staff Writer In Ephesians 6, Paul admonishes us on how to protect ourselves from our spiritual enemy. He said, “Put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which

you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (vv. 13-17)” The shield of faith is one aspect of the armor that stands out to me most. I used to assume it was like a shield that a soldier would carry in front of themselves to protect them head-on from the enemy.

But I don’t necessarily think that is what Paul was alluding to. In one of his letters to the Corinthians, he states, “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair”

(2 Cor 4:8). It seems like this situation would call for more than just one-sided protection--and that sort of all-encompassing protection is exactly what God desires to envelope us in! Psalms says, “Thou art a shield around me.” It says that He goes before me and that He is my rear guard. It says that He will surround me with His faithfulness as with a shield. It says He is my shade at my right hand. This ain’t no ordinary man-made shield.

Reflections: What can we do?

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Last Saturday, September 11, was a day of somber reminders

for anyone old enough to remember September 11, 2001. Many of us paused to recall where we were and what we were doing when we heard the news. I remember feeling panicked as airports started to close, since my daughter was out of town doing volunteer work. We lived near Fort Leonard Wood, and my husband’s commute to teach school on post became a daily ordeal as new security procedures were implemented. Walking casually through the airport to board a flight became a fading memory as our suitcase contents and even clothing suddenly became the TSA’s business. And for some, the loss of a loved one irreparably altered their lives.

My Bible reading last Saturday was, by strange coincidence, Psalm 11. As never-to-be-for-

gotten footage of the crumbling Twin Towers was replayed on news programs, I pondered v. 3: “If the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

As those literal foundations crumbled 20 years ago, so did our perception of the United States of America as a safe haven. Sadly, some people used that occasion to preach that God was punishing America for (insert whatever sin), but for many, the dawning of September 12, 2001, brought people into unity and seeking God, as we realized that evil exists in the world, and we need divine help to endure it.

Recalling that occasion made my recent study of Habakkuk relatable. The United States was brought to its knees by a terrorist organization far worse than

We may be in the interim, but I have not stopped advocating on behalf of my constituents. I have repeatedly called on the governor to call a special session to address myriad issues that I believe would be better addressed as standalone bills than as part of a large omnibus bill that eventually gets stripped of meaningful legislation.

The issues of vaccine and mask mandates deserve to be debated without the noise and clutter that occurs during the regular session.

Missouri citizens’ livelihoods are at stake. My office has received

several calls from Missourians that are desperate to find a way to save their jobs that are being threatened because they have chosen not to receive a vaccine. This situation is untenable and needs to be addressed immediately by the Legislature.

Another issue that has, and continues to bring unnecessary division to our state and our country is Critical Race Theory (CRT).

This is another topic that deserves to have a robust debate in the People’s House, but as is too often the case in the House, legislation (HB 952 that I sponsored) is slow rolled, not brought to the House floor, added as an amendment to another bill, and then is quietly killed. Again, my office has received numerous calls on this topic and the majority of them demand that we take action to prevent this type of curriculum from being taught in our public schools.

I agree with those constituents.

The rational workaday world says such things are silly. A thing is only a thing, after all. A thing cannot be special and meaningful to just one person. Can it?

most of us considered our own nation to be. Habakkuk received a prophetic revelation that Israel’s disobedience would be dealt with as God allowed a nation far more wicked to defeat them, and the prophet had plenty of questions.

We must realize that the final outcome will be God’s justice, in his timing. Good, God-fearing people died or suffered lasting trauma on September 11. Terrorism gained the upper hand that day, and it seems it has done so again during recent developments in Afghanistan. Our country has been rocked by crisis after crisis; the foundations are crumbling. Even as we pray “Thy Kingdom come,” we must personally and corporately ask, “What can the righteous do?”

Christians are divided as to I grew up watching the occasional dust devil spin itself out in the open fields near where I grew up. I still think I remember the first time my mom pointed a dust devil out to me as something special. I also like to think I remember her wearing her fringy leather jacket and driving the threeon-the-column black Ford pickup truck with the red vinyl interior – because she was cool like that.

But that might have been another memory. Nonetheless, dust devils always seemed special. As though the phenomena had reached out from another place entirely to speak in a language of its own, if only to those who could listen.

Fast-forward to September 2017, just a handful of days past my mom’s birthday, but also six years after her passing.

We were hosting the very first StateoftheOzarks Fest and I knew if I didn’t do it right, it could also be our last.

Following September 11, 2001, many cried out to God in either desperation or anger, but gradually adjusted to a new normal that didn’t really include him.

Habakkuk, in the end, realized that although war and famine would come, he could still rejoice in God’s goodness.

As it seems many foundations are crumbling, we must realize that justice will prevail, allow the Holy Spirit and the Bible to inform our response to current events, and remember that God is still in control and God is still good.

Fortunately, we did it well, but it wasn’t until the hot afternoon that the professional success and the personal success began to sink in and I began to breathe.

I was standing on the north end of the street, being interviewed on video. Behind me, I heard a noise. A noise enough to cause me to turn away from my interviewer. And there, forming right behind me, whipping up the autumn’s black gum leaves, was a dust devil.

I’d never been so close! I could feel the wind, warm but whispering, turning ever so tremulously, lasting just a moment before spinning away into nothingness. I turned back to the camera in wonderment.

To everyone else, it was just a weird thing that happened. To me, it was a sign. And a very good one at that.

often just fill in blanks to answer a question. Good writing should be required at home and in all classes at school, not just the communications class. If a child is allowed to get by with sloppy writing in math, science, social studies and health classes, the one class in language is not likely to succeed in teaching good writing skills. Consistency is important. Parents would be wise to see that their children are doing plenty of writing and doing it well. mighty. “I am a self-employed workaholic,” Davis explained. “My hobby is motorcycles, but if I didn’t ride to work, I’d sure have to cut down on my riding time.”

do, and I enjoy waiting on customers that are having a good time. I have no plans to retire right now.”

Hundreds enjoyed the three-day event, held last weekend. The festival offered those in attendance food, fun, and the region’s best bluegrass music.

Taking the stage at the Bluegrass Festival were Little Roy and Izzy, Southern Raised, the Kody Norris Show, Catahoula Drive, Larry Efaw and the Bluegrass Mountaineers, Seth Mulder and Midnight Run, Spillwater Drive,

the Chigger Hill Boys and Terri, the Baker Family, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, and local favorites Kari Garrison and Bluegrass Remedy.

Under the pavilion, festival goers also enjoyed browsing a variety of booths that offered arts and crafts, jewelry, painting, kettle baked goods and much more.

Lifted Truck Nationals entertain hundreds at Branson Cedars Resort

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Lifted trucks descended on Branson this past weekend for the Lifted Truck Nationals, held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Branson Cedars Resort.

Dozens of Lifted vehicles, including trucks, Jeeps, SUVs and specialty vehicles, were lined up each day at the resort south of town, as hundreds of spectators from all over the re-

gion enjoyed viewing the specialty vehicles. The three-day event featured trucks on display all weekend.

The highlight of the weekend was the Parade of Trucks on Friday evening. Held at the Branson Landing, the Parade of Trucks was presented by American Force Wheels, and showcased some of the finest Lifted Trucks in the country.

The weekend event culminated in an awards show on Sunday. Awards were presented for Best of Show, Best Chevy, Best Ford, Best Mopar, Best SUV, Best Jeep, Best Special Interest, Best Suspension, Best Paint, Best Interior, Longest Distance, Best on Forces, Ladies’ Choice, and Branson Cedars Resort Choice.

Car show benefits Hollister Tiger Band

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Hollister Tiger Band students and staff want to thank the many families, friends, car owners and other members of the community who attended the First Annual Tiger Band Car Show, held on Saturday, September 11. Sponsored by Tri-Lakes Rat Rods and Customs, the show featured 63 classic vehicles. Several local businesses provided giveaways or items for the silent auction held concurrently with the show.

During the afternoon, the Tiger Band performed a patriotic tribute to the victims and heroes of September 11, 2001, followed by music from the band’s competition show, “Royal,” based on the musical “Six.”

Both the Band Director’s Choice award and the Hollister’s Best award,

presented by Hollister Alderman Lamar Patton, went to Dwight and Nancy Ford for their 1927 Pontiac. The Fords created an entire Roaring ‘20s scene complete with picnic basket, period clothing, and original tools, to showcase the car with a taste of history.

Band director Nathan Spurling thanked attendees and exhibitors for the great response to the first-time show and said the band hopes to make it an annual event. The show was free to attendees, but proceeds from exhibitor entry fees, the silent auction, and concessions will help fund the band’s trip in November to the Bands of America National competition.

Grand run: Buffet manager retiring after 22 years with his ‘baby’

Submitted to Branson Globe Larry Wilson knew from his very first day at Grand Country Buffet that he’d retire there. It was just something about the people – and passion – at the place that hooked him from the start. Now, after 22 years leading the team, he’s hanging up his apron, but not without some bittersweet reflection first.

It was 1997 when he got the call from Grand Country owner Glenn Robinson. Robinson was revamping the 76 Mall property at the time and had a pretty grand vision. “I had opened McFarlain’s in town. Glenn was closing the Bonanza restaurant and making over the property to become the Grand Country complex,” Wilson explains. “He hired me to launch the buffet. I promised him on that first day I’d build a buffet he could be proud of, and we never looked back.”

Wilson knew the key to keeping that promise was really simple: Great food. Great service. Great atmosphere. Those three have to fire on all cylinders each and every day for each and every customer,” he

says. “We want every customer to walk in and immediately feel like they are right where they’re meant to be. It takes our entire team to make our guests feel like VIPs and we’ve gotten pretty good at it!”

Buffets often get a bad rap for serving cheaper ingredients, but that’s unacceptable on Wilson’s watch. After all, the food lineup is personal to him. “A lot of these recipes are dishes from my own family,” he says with a smile. “We use the highest quality ingredients to make sure each customer leaves with happy bellies, happy hearts and a desire to return.”

From the homemade meatloaf, pecan crusted tilapia, to vegetable beef soup, each from-scratch item goes through the ultimate taste test: Wilson himself. “It’s true. I’m the official taste tester. Can’t you tell,” he laughs while rubbing his belly.

“We serve up all the country hits and each one is just like mama use to make.”

Let’s just say what happens in Vegas doesn’t ALWAYS stay in Vegas. “My wife and I were in Las Vegas and had the bread pudding at a casino that’s no longer there,” Wilson says. “It was one of the best things we’d ever eaten. When we got home, I called the casino and begged the chef to share the recipe with me. He wouldn’t.” Wilson wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer.

He desperately wanted that recipe to share with his buffet customers in Branson.

“About the fifth time I called, I spoke to the sous chef,” he explains.

“I told him we were just a restaurant in little old Branson, Missouri, and are no competition to a big casino. He said ‘sure you can have it, what’s your fax number,’” Wilson recalls with a big smile. “He was so happy for everyone here to enjoy that dessert.”

Wilson couldn’t stop smiling throughout the entire interview for this story – he says Grand Country is such a special part of him, and he hopes he’s made Robinson proud.

“You know, Glenn still comes by almost every morning for breakfast with me,” Wilson says. “After that, he pretty much leaves me alone. I think that shows his confidence in me – I think I did make him proud.”

Wilson’s final day is October first.

It’s hard for him to think about what that will feel like. “I know I’ll be broken hearted to hand my ‘baby’ over to someone else,” he says. “But Ann is taking over, and she’s got the passion for this place, too. In fact, she was the very first person I hired.

I know it’s in good hands.”

Wilson, who is looking forward to traveling after retirement, is excited to return to the buffet as a customer next time. Still, he admits it’s hard to let go of a place he loves so much. “This truly is bittersweet.

I’ve made thousands of friends and have had the most magical 22 years,” he says with a pause. “I’ve loved every day and every second of it. It truly and honestly has been a grand run.”

Elevate Work mentors prepare for new group of students

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer A group of people eager to make a difference gathered at Elevate Branson on Wednesday, September 8, for Elevate Work’s mentor orientation. The newest class started Monday, September 13, and will conclude with a November 10 graduation.

Orientation attendees included some experienced mentors, some preparing for their first mentor experience, and people just

wanting to learn more about the program and what is involved in mentorship.

To open the orientation, Elevate Branson founder Bryan Stallings gave an overview of the organization’s services and its goal of seeing people reach their full potential through a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Elevate Branson focuses on empowerment, not handouts, giving neighbors a chance to earn thrift

store credit and other assistance through work. Elevate Branson also helps make connections with over 150 Branson and Springfield area agencies to address issues that may prevent someone from obtaining employment or housing, such as lack of a birth certificate.

Stallings described his own realization that while actual job skills can be taught, many people lack the “soft skills” needed to secure employment—things like dressing properly for an interview or controlling negative outbursts when interacting with others. That realization led him to the Jobs for Life curriculum, developed by a North Carolina nonprofit to help address barriers to meaningful employment. Jobs for Life had a higher success rate than many work training programs due to its Bible-based approach. The Elevate Work

curriculum is adapted from Jobs for Life to reflect the particular needs and challenges of the Branson area.

Much of the orientation focused on helping mentors understand the difficulty of moving from a situation of poverty into a middle-class approach to work and finances. Mentors were assured their job would not be to teach the lesson or solve every problem, but to encourage, coach and help the student navigate things like completing assignments and preparing for mock interviews. To avoid undue pressure or expectations, mentors were given guidelines for helping without creating dependency.

Both Stallings and Elevate Work director Donna McConkey reiterated the importance of mentors to the success of the program. At the opening class, McConkey and her staff pair

mentors with students, using the information provided on the application as well as personal observations at the first session.

Other valuable contributors to the program include local business people who participate in panels and mock interviews.

Classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays for ninw weeks, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mentors are encouraged to come at 5 p.m. for dinner as a way to gain additional insight into their student. Recognizing that sickness and family issues do happen, both mentors and students are asked to have no more than two absences during the nine-week class.

Five classes are scheduled for 2022, and a spring mentor orientation will be announced soon.

To conclude the orientation, McConkey reiterated the faithbased foundations for Elevate Work and shared her personal observation of the program, stating, “I expected to help people become more employable, but I didn’t know I would see such radical change in their countenance. There’s nothing like it!”

Community enjoys Shepherd’s Fall Craft Fair

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer The Shepherd of the Hills historic farm and family adventure park were a popular destination last weekend, September 10 through 12, as more than 2,700 people attended the Shepherd’s Fall Craft Fair. Over 80 arts and crafts vendors lined the roads and the shady walkways to the park’s historical structures, and local musicians performed folk, country, pop, and tradi-

tional music throughout much of each day. In addition to the park’s regular restaurant and snack venues, a variety of food trucks were on hand.

Guests also enjoyed self-guided tours of the historic farm, miniature golf, and Li’l Pete’s Playland, included in the $5 admission. Craft vendor merchandise included jewelry, artwork, home décor, candles, soaps, woodworking and more.

Where there’s a reader, there’s a writer

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Do you want to write? Prolific writers are nearly always avid readers. Reading well-crafted fiction is, handsdown, the best way to learn a riveting story style; studying famous essays will hone your powers of persuasion.

Many readers sooner or later want to try their hand at writing. Some people have a personal story to share, perhaps to help others or to preserve memories of an earlier time.

Others have valuable knowledge in their field to share, or a creative fiction idea.

Whatever your reason for writing, there are resources to help. An obvious one is your local library; if you have a story to tell but haven’t done much reading, it’s never too late to broaden your reading about other people’s experiences to get ideas for sharing your own.

Finding community is also helpful, as writing can be a lonely pursuit, and it’s hard to navigate the changing world of traditional or self-publishing, e-books, and marketing.

Several groups are available in person or online. Two lo-

cal ones are Ozarks Writers League (OWL) and the Ozarks Chapter of American Christian Writers (OCACW).

OWL normally has annual conferences, often in Branson, but has been meeting online during the pandemic. They have regular writing contests, art and photography contests, and online mixers, a great place to share projects and get feedback. Cecil Todd is best known for his five years of “Campmeetings” at Branson’s 4,000 seat Grand Palace, providing 250,000 military Bibles for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, and speaking to one million people for Russia’s annual May Day Celebration on Red Square in Moscow. No

Kids Across America welcomes new alumni coordinator Aaqila Ward.

Submitted to Branson Globe Kids Across America (KAA), a Christian sports camp for youth from under-resourced communities, welcomed Aaqila Ward as its new alumni coordinator on September 1. This is a new and exciting role within Kids Across America. As the alumni coordinator, Mrs. Ward will create, lead and support engagement and event strategies and tactics that drive alumni engagement goals and objectives.

KAA defines alumni as anyone who has come to camp as a camper, summer staff member or Kaleo (the name KAA uses to describe the adult leaders who bring kids to camp). In 31 years of holding camp, KAA estimates its alumni numbers

more than 250,000 people.

“Aaqila has a long history with KAA and comes to us with an impressive marketing background,” says KAA President and CEO Randy Odom. “We are honored to welcome her back as the alumni coordinator and eager to see how God will use her to impact our alumni, who we consider a part of the KAA family.”

She attended KAA as a camper for six summers, served as a counselor for two, was the summer programs director for two years, and served as the KAA 1 Assistant Women’s Director. Mrs. Ward earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing from Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

Prior to her role as KAA Alumni Director, she worked for Michael J. Productions as the content producer and operations manager.

Michael Jr. Productions curates content designed to explain how life works leveraging comedy. Michael Jr is a nationally-renowned Christian comedian and author.

This being the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, it is important for us to remember the unity America felt after that horrible attack, to remember why we felt that unity, and to reclaim it for the sake of our future.

For those old enough to remember, 9/11 was a devastating day that we cannot forget. Like many Americans, I was angry that something like this could happen on American soil and the soldier in me wanted to get out and fight our enemies. My wife and I even discussed my possible re-enlistment to the Army. I also felt a camaraderie with other Americans. That moment united us in common purpose. It was powerful.

Sadly, the unity that we developed directly after 9/11 seems to have become a thing of the past.

We always say “Never Forget” and yet, it seems like many have.

My feelings haven’t changed over the past 20 years, and I have felt that familiar fire and anger rise up again while watching Americans get left in Afghanistan over the past few weeks. Our world has not escaped the danger posed by radical Islamic terrorists and probably never will. In the immediate aftermath of 9/11 we saw many of our freedoms infringed upon through the Patriot Act which was passed with good intentions, but targeted Americans rather than our enemies. The immediate reactions of our government in the face of the 9/11 attacks were understandable, but in hindsight were not the best course of action. As we have navigated a post-9/11 world, I personally still feel the impact and will never forget that day. I hope one day to see our country unify behind a common purpose again.

United Methodist Women present donations to local organizations serving Branson’s underserved population Submitted to Branson Globe The United Methodist Women of the Branson United Methodist Church recently presented charitable donations to three local agencies that serve those in need in Branson. A donation in the amount of $1,000 was presented to the Salvation Army. A donation of $3,000 was presented to Faith Community Health, and a donation of $4,000 was made to Christian Action Ministries.

According to United Methodist Women president Wanda Nicol, the UMW seeks out local programs whose mission is serving the underserved and assists that mission with funding.

Faith Community Health’s mission is “to ensure that every one of our neighbors has affordable access to the healthcare they need.” Their patients can see a provider for as little as $25 per visit (based on their household income). Prescriptions are available for a low administrative fee of $10 per month for those who qualify. A new program for adults is starting – “Cooking Matters” – a series of six classes that is free with registration.

Christian Action Ministries (CAM) is the primary food pantry for Taney County and will soon kick off their annual Festival of Trees. Paid sponsors decorate their tree and donate it to CAM, and CAM sells the tree during the December event held at the Bran-

son Landing. This is one of their biggest fundraisers.

The Salvation Army has a food pantry, rental, utility, gasoline assistance and Pathway of Hope program.

Their newest program is Character Building Kids’ Club, grades K-12.

Running With the Tigers Trail Run is September 25

Offering the choice of a 5K or a 50K run, Running with the Tigers is a fun-filled trail run that takes place north of Branson, as participants run the trails throughout the sanctuary that provides forever homes for a number of tigers, lions and other exotic cats.

The event is open to first-time trail runners as well as trail enthusiasts, and showcases the beauty of the Ozarks during this exciting morning event.

Missouri cave with ancient Native American drawings is sold

By Jim Salter, AP News A Missouri cave containing Native American artwork from more than 1,000 years ago was sold at auction Tuesday, disappointing leaders of the Osage Nation who hoped to buy the land to “protect and preserve our most sacred site.”

A bidder agreed to pay $2.2 million to private owners for what’s known as “Picture Cave,” along with the 43 hilly acres that surround it near the town of Warrenton, about 60 miles west of St. Louis.

Bryan Laughlin, director of Selkirk Auctioneers & Appraisers, the St. Louis-based firm handling the auction, said the winning bidder declined to be named. A St. Louis family that’s owned the land since 1953 has mainly used it for hunting.

The cave was the site of sacred rituals and burying of the dead. It also has more than 290 prehistoric glyphs, or hieroglyphic symbols used to represent sounds or meanings, “making it the largest collection of indigenous people’s polychrome paintings in Missouri,” according to the auction website.

That’s exactly why Carol Diaz-Granados opposed the sale. She and her husband, James Duncan,

spent 20 years researching the cave and wrote a book about it. Duncan is a scholar in Osage oral history, and Diaz-Granados is a research associate in the anthropology department at Washington University in St. Louis.

“Auctioning off a sacred American Indian site truly sends the wrong message,” Diaz-Granados said. “It’s like auctioning off the Sistine Chapel.”

The Osage Nation, in a statement, called the sale “truly heartbreaking.”

“Our ancestors lived in this area for 1,300 years,” the statement read.

“This was our land. We have hundreds of thousands of our ancestors buried throughout Missouri and Illinois, including Picture Cave.”

The cave features drawings of people, animals, birds and mythical creatures. Diaz-Granados said various means were used to create the art. Charred botanical material was used to draw. For one depiction of a mythical being, the artist created a white figure by scraping off the brown sandstone.

Diaz-Granados said the intricate details set the Missouri cave apart from other sites with ancient drawings.

“You get stick figures in other rock art sites, or maybe one little feather on the top of the head, or a figure holding a weapon,” she said. “But in Picture Cave you get actual clothing details, headdress details, feathers, weapons. It’s truly amazing.”

Years ago, analytical chemists from Texas A&M used pigment samples to determine the drawings were at least 1,000 years old.

The cave has other history, too, Laughlin said. European explorers visited in the 1700s and wrote the ship captain’s name and names of some crew members on the walls.

It’s also the year-round home to endangered Indiana gray bats.

Laughlin said there are plenty of

reasons to believe the cave will remain both protected and respected.

For one, he said, Selkirk vetted potential buyers.

Then there’s the law.

Missouri Revised Statute 194.410 states that any person or entity that

“knowingly disturbs, destroys, vandalizes, or damages a marked or unmarked human burial site commits a class D felony.” The statute also makes it a felony to profit from cultural items obtained from the site.

Pumpkin Crunch Cake

By Kerry Dawn Green It’s fall ya’ll. The first thing I like to make in the fall.

Pumpkin Crunch Cake • 1 can (16 oz.) solid packed pumpkin (You can use the 29 oz. can if you want more pumpkin.)

• 3 eggs • 1 cup sugar • 1 cup evaporated milk (undiluted) • 1 tsp. cinnamon • ½ tsp. each: nutmeg, ground cloves, ginger • 1 cup butter (melted)

• 1 package spice cake (You can also use other cake mixes.)

• 1 cup finely chopped nuts (optional) Mix together all ingredients except butter, cake mix and nuts.

Pour into greased 9x13 pan.

Next, spread dry cake mix over the pumpkin mixture and sprinkle nuts over top of cake mix. Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the nuts.

Bake one hour at 325 degrees F. Let cool for 15 minutes. Serve with whipped cream or Cool Whip.

Free Tuesday Talk at Branson Centennial Museum explores fact, fiction about Ozark hillbillies Submitted to Branson Globe Countless hillbilly caricatures, jokes and stereotypes have long plagued our region and its native citizenry. On Tuesday, September 21, co-authors Tom Koob and Curtis Copeland present the various misconceptions and real-life stories from their book, “Ozarks Hillbilly Stereotype and Reality.” The presentation is hosted by the Branson Centennial Museum, from 12:30-1:30 p.m., at 120 South Commercial Street, in historic downtown Branson. In their new book, Koob and Copeland delve into the source, development and use of the term “hillbilly.”

“We did considerable research for this book,” explains Curtis Copeland, “including a number of personal interviews. The book attempts to balance various views about Ozarks natives, while also considering the real-life attributes required to survive in this rugged and sometime unforgiving region of the country.”

“It’s always a pleasure to welcome Tim Koob and Curtis Copeland to the museum,” stated Jim Babcock, Branson Centennial Museum co-curator with his wife Jean. “Both gentlemen have extensive expertise in the history and culture of our area. A chance to hear firsthand from these authors about their research and writing enhances understanding and appreciation for our Ozarks roots.”

“Hillbilly” is a label based on misconceptions, comic presentations and outright insults generally hurled by outlanders, according to the new book’s preview summary. “Hillbilly” is also a shared term of comradeship used by native Ozarkers. The Branson Centennial Museum invites you to come learn and decide for yourself if hillbillies are smart or dull, lazy or resourceful, comic characters or clever adaptors to a harsh environment.

You may even choose to proudly call yourself a hillbilly, or not.

Contractor crews to install new sidewalks between College of the Ozarks and the intersection of Birch Street and Industrial Park Drive. Project includes pedestrian signal improvements at various locations and installing a southbound to westbound turn lane at the intersection of Birch Street and Industrial Park Drive with a flashing yellow turn signal.
