College of the Ozarks hosts The National Symposium on Patriotic Education Submitted to Branson Globe College of the Ozarks hosted Michael R. Pence, 48th Vice President of the United States, as the keynote speaker for The National Symposium on Patriotic Education on Friday, September 17. The Symposium was presented by The William S. Knight Center for Patriotic Education.

Keeter Athletic Complex on the College’s campus. The event opened with a special College of the Ozarks Praise Ensemble, with music coordinated

by Gregg Busch, assistant professor of music and theatre.

The purpose of the Symposium was to revive historic American values and pride on the eve of the 250th anniversary of America’s founding.

In his introductory address, College of the Ozarks President Jerry C. Davis emphasized the importance of understanding our history in order to ensure the freedom of future generations.

“Patriotic education is the debt we owe to our history,” Davis said. “As President Ronald Reagan said, Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.’”

Pence addressed the students, challenging them to become informed citizens and encouraging them in their excellent choice of an educational institution.

“We are standing here at Point Lookout, College of the Ozarks, one of the leading institutions of America,” Pence said. “You know that the foundation of America is freedom, and the foundation of freedom is faith. Thank you for stepping up.

Thank you for coming to a place like this to become leaders for liberty for the future of America.”

Pence emphasized the importance of developing strong personal values and character.

“The truth is adversity doesn’t create character; adversity reveals character,” Pence said. “When hard times come, and your values and your convictions are challenged, you will be on that day the man or

woman you prepared to be on every quiet day. So, grow into men and women of integrity. America is depending on it.”

Grace Carr, senior business management major, expressed her gratitude for the former vice president’s intentionality and honesty in his address to students.

“I’m incredibly grateful to former Vice President Pence and his wife for taking the time to visit our college,” Carr said. “His passion for both patriotism and faith is inspiring. It’s so rare in our world today to have an American leader grounded in both God and country, who is willing to do what it takes to protect the freedoms that we enjoy. I appreciated hearing him speak and am grateful to College of the Ozarks for doing what it takes to raise up Christ-like, patriotic Americans.”

Plenary Sessions The first session was held on Thursday evening, September 16, in the Royal Oak Forum at The Keeter Center. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, former White House press secretary, presented Liberty’s Lessons.

In Sanders’ presentation, she reinforced the importance of America’s heritage, especially individual and religious freedom.

At the second and third plenary sessions, Edward Graham, Assistant to the Vice President of Programs and Government Relations for Samaritan’s Purse, and President of

the Travis Manion Foundation Ryan Manion, discussed Liberty’s Cost, honoring the sacrifices of Veterans and their families.

Dr. Ben Carson, retired neurosurgeon and former secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, presented the fourth plenary session, Liberty’s Foundation. He spoke about strengthening free enterprise through hard work.

The William S. Knight Center Dedication On Friday, September 17, College of the Ozarks officially dedicated The William S. Knight Center for Patriotic Education. Through the Center, the College strives to restore patriotism by teaching future generations the four key pillars of patriotic education: Liberty’s Lessons, Liberty’s Cost, Liberty’s Foundation, and Liberty’s Legacy.

Davis welcomed students, staff, faculty and donors to the event.

His presentation was followed by an address from General Terrence R. Dake, chairman of the board of trustees at College of the Ozarks, who discussed the importance of restoring American values.

Pence made congratulatory remarks, and the three then unveiled the official bronze statue of George Washington, sculpted by James Hall of Nixa, Missouri.

October Jammin’ for Jesus to benefit Horses Healing Hearts Submitted to Branson Globe A Jammin’ for Jesus concert will be held Sunday, October 3, 2021, at the Branson Famous Baldknobber’s Theater, 645 S. 165 in Branson, Missouri. The music will begin at 2 p.m., with theater host Brandon Mabe and concert hosts Ava Kasich and Mike Wellman.

Also performing are Megan Mabe, Kari Garrison, Keith McKinney, Anita French-Kidd Stahl, Bruno Samuels, the Singing Bones, David House, Marlene Pelt, The Barnettes, and saxophonist Gary Dooms. This concert will also honor Jammin’ for Jesus’ soundman,

Buster Prine. This will be his last concert as our soundman, but we hope to have him back as a special guest very soon.

Admission is free to Jammin’ for Jesus with a donation of ranch supplies for Horses Healing Hearts.

Donations of paper towels, toilet tissue, bottled water, cleaning supplies or gift certificates from Lowe’s are needed. There are many forms of therapy, but there is just something special about the way animals play a part in helping people recover.

State of the Ozarks hosts annual Fest on Downing Street

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Downing Street in historic Hollister was filled with activity on a beautiful fall day as locals and visitors gathered on Saturday, September 18, for the State of the Ozarks Fest. The annual festival celebrates local tradition and culture with crafts, food, giveaways, music and demonstrations of traditional and historical skills.

On the main square, attendees could enjoy fights by the Order of the Red Boar using authentic medieval weapons; performances by lo-

cal dance academy students, and the Queen City Beard and Mustache Federation competition. Historical reenactors roamed the streets, and local musicians kept the Limestone Stage busy all day with traditional, folk and popular music.

Visitors could also stop by the historic railroad depot for more music, demonstrations of traditional Ozarks skills, and a historical display about the Civil War in the Ozarks. The mid-street stage hosted additional music performances including Ozark Mountain Music Association, a local

nonprofit whose goal is to pass on traditional Ozarks music to a new generation of young people; and Diskey the Wonder Dog made an appearance.

State of the Ozarks is dedicated to strengthening community, building relationships, and sharing creativity throughout the Ozarks. By Pat Lamb A common phrase heard by parents is, “I was never any good in math either.” My late husband, a retired math teacher, said that you never hear parents say, “I was never any good in reading either.” A parent’s attitude is transferred to children easily. Undoubtedly, this attitude expressed about math influences a child and often causes the child to think that it is all right to be less proficient in math than in reading and “lets them off the hook” when it comes to doing math homework. One of the best ways to help children with math homework is to have the right attitude about math itself. In addition, parents need to be involved with the homework and need to provide opportunities for math usage to help children see its importance.

These same procedures are used in all decision-making in real life. In this respect, all math is useful. It is interesting that at one time math was referred to as the math discipline. That title is fitting as math truly disciplines the brain.

Parents often shy away from becoming involved in math homework for fear they will do it wrong. It is true that some different methods are being used in some schools, but often if the child is asked to explain the methods, the problem will be solved by the child during the explanation. A good thing to do is to ask the child to tell you what he/she knows about a problem. This helps the student break down the problem in parts. It is not a good idea to try to teach children different methods until a child has mastered

one method as it will cause confusion. It is profitable to take the time to study the textbook to see what method is being taught rather than try to teach a child to solve the way we were taught.

building a house. You can’t put the walls up until the foundation is laid. Often children miss out somewhere along the way in math and that affects the understanding of current assignments. In such cases, the child simply needs to go back and find where he/she got off track and “fill in the chinks” in that foundation.

There are two reasons for learning math. The first reason is obvious. It is used in many, many aspects of life. Adults should never say, “You’ll never use this.” This causes the child to think they don’t have to learn it. The other reason for learning math is that it is a mental exercise that develops the thinking processes. When children learn to do math, especially word problems, they are learning to consider all facts and are required to sort out what is needed and set

By Tiffany Brown, Staff Writer I recently heard someone say, “If you do the right things, the right things will happen to you.” Oh, how I wish life was that cut and dry! It doesn’t take much research to discover that this ideology is not completely biblical. Jesus said that he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. We have to be careful that we are not watering down our Christianity with eastern philosophies that contradict what Jesus taught. I have often seen upstanding, righteous individuals suffering some of the deepest

pain imaginable. And oftentimes my natural response has been to question God’s plan and think him unfair and unjust.

It is human to want to find a reason for our pain. But why? I believe it is because we have an innate desire to fix things. We want a specific formula to keep us from pain and heartache. We find comfort in believing that if “a” happens, then “b” will result. But this formula doesn’t always work in the fallen world we live in. Sometimes, doing the right thing brings rejection and great sacrifice. Sometimes, disaster comes to people who are completely in-

nocent and undeserving. Jesus said to his disciples, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart!

I have overcome the world.” John 16:33.

We are living in a time when doing what is right according to God’s word (and basic morality) is becoming increasingly unpopular.

One current hot-button topic is the arrival of Afghan refugees in the U.S., including some Missouri communities. Response on social media and news websites is all over the spectrum, from “We can’t even take care of our homeless veterans” to “Your family was an immigrant at one point” to “Don’t tell me to get vaccinated if people pouring across the border don’t have to.”

Christians are as divided as anyone else.

The Bible actually speaks to the topic of immigrants and refugees. For starters, there’s Leviticus 19:34, “The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lᴏʀᴅ your God” (NIV). The Israelite widow Naomi, after relocating to sometimes-enemy Moab during a famine, returned to Israel with her Moabite daughter-in-

law, Ruth, also a widow, who became the great-grandmother of King David. Cross-culturalism isn’t just Old Testament stuff; the good guy in Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan is an unpopular half-breed. And as the Apostle Paul planted churches throughout the Gentile world, some Jewish Christians weren’t happy about it.

Delving further, I realized God’s original plan was for people to get along and move about freely, with a common language.

That got mixed up at the tower of Babel, as people built their own stairway to heaven instead of building obedience to God. The coming of Jesus paved the way back to unity, as we all find salvation in Christ. In fact, Jesus before his crucifixion prayed for his followers “that all of them may be one” (John 20:21 NIV).

Obviously, not all immigrants and refugees are Christians, although many sources indicate some Afghan refugees are. We must welcome those as brothers and sisters in Christ. Many com-

(Daniel 3:16-18) It takes great faith to believe that God is able to deliver us from our difficulties. It is, radical faith, however, to say that even if God does not do that, it’s okay. Believing God for miracles is a great thing, but believing God in tribulation or persecution, when no miracle comes, is faith at a profound level.

To have a persevering faith like this may not bring deliverance from our trials, but it will make us “perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”

And in September, if you’re quiet, you can look in the sky and see, away high up, winter looking down. It’s a bittersweet moment, the kind that certain poetic, melancholy Celts live for.

Annual Autumn Daze attracts many to downtown area

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer A longstanding Branson tradition, Autumn Daze, was held last weekend in Branson with many in attendance.

Hundreds of locals and visitors alike flocked to the downtown area where they enjoyed the 48th annual Arts, Crafts and Music Festival, presented by the Downtown Branson Betterment Association.

Dozens of vendors from all over

– many new to the Autumn Daze celebration – displayed handmade items, jewelry, crafts, Christmas decor, clothing, gifts and more.

Working craftsmen were on hand, as well, showcasing their talents.

Food vendors offered a variety of delicious festival foods and beverages, and Branson area entertainers wowed the crowds with their musical talents.

The free three-day event also in-

cluded kid-friendly activities and lots of family fun. Many downtown businesses participated by holding sidewalk sales in front of their respective shops.

A festival highlight was artist Kwaku Addai, from Ghana, Africa, who shared his talent with Autumn Daze attendees, as he created and sold unique art masterpieces from the Branson Regional Arts Council booth.

Law enforcement officers from Branson, Hollister, Forsyth, Merriam Woods, Rockaway Beach and the Taney County Sheriff’s Office were all on hand for the special recognition banquet.

The officers and their guests enjoyed a delicious dinner, entertainment and a variety of gifts and prizes. Donated by local businesses and individuals, prizes included large screen televisions, weekend getaways and much more.

Said Cory Roebuck, Board Chair of the Taney County 100 Club, “This was the first event we have put on, and we hope to make it a regular event. We had about 35 law enforcement officers and their dates. We also delivered food to agencies so that on-duty officers could enjoy the meal, as well.”

Roebuck added that the Elks Lodge and the Taney County 100 Club hopes to do additional events for other agencies.

“Our desire is to recognize all emergency responders,” said Roebuck. “However, due to the size of the facility we chose to start with law enforcement and will hold a similar event for firefighters and paramedics at a later date.”

On behalf of the Elks Lodge 2597, and the Taney County 100 Club, Roebuck expressed his appreciation to our local heroes.

Said Roebuck, “The job our law enforcement officers do has become increasingly harder. We wanted to ensure those that are protecting the citizens of Taney County know there are individuals and businesses that greatly appreciate what they do. This event was an opportunity to recognize them for their effort in an environment where they feel comfortable. We hope to make this a regular event which grows in size each year.”

Inaugural Rowdy’s Roundup held at Rowdy’s Cheesesteaks and Shakes

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Rowdy’s Cheesesteaks and Shakes was the site of a car show last weekend.

The first ever Rowdy’s Roundup was held at the 76 Country Boulevard restaurant on Saturday, with numerous cars and trucks – all makes, models and styles – on display. The day’s activities also included games, food, booths and lots of family fun.

Rowdy’s Cheesesteaks and Shakes opened this past spring and offers a variety of delicious, gourmet cheesesteak-style sandwiches and scrumptious shakes.

A family-friendly, casual restaurant, Rowdy’s has seating in both their rustic-styled dining room and on their patio.

Rowdy’s is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with extended hours of

7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday when the restaurant is open for breakfast.

Rowdy’s Roundup brought many spectators to the establishment on Saturday. In a Facebook post, the restaurant thanked those who dropped by, noting that this was the first such event, but the company is already planning on other fun family events for the future.

Ron received many other awards to include the Pioneer Award from the Music City Gospel Showcase, the Chuck Wagon Gang Legacy Award, a Terry Music Award and

Branson’s Gospel Singer/Songwriter Association Honorary Lifetime Member Award.

Ron was a long-time resident of the Branson area where he performed in several shows, including the musical “The Promise,” “The Blackwood Family Show,” the “Ronnie Prophet Show” and the “Statler Brothers Revisited,” which he created and performed in. He wrote show reviews for the Branson Daily Independent and the Branson Globe in the latter years, always promoting the Branson entertainment scene and live shows.

Ronnie Page, a legend in gospel music, will be missed by family, friends and his many fans.

The safety button system will be implemented by the end of the year

and is made possible due to support from the Skaggs Foundation. The Foundation awarded Cox Branson a grant of more than $132,000 to bring the technology to Branson.

Cox Branson’s safety system will have two components. Here’s how they work: Approximately 300-400 staff working in the ER and inpatient hospital rooms will have the personal panic button on their badge. If they are in distress, they push the button which then activates the personal tracing system.

Security is immediately notified and a pop-up alert on hospital computers shows the employee’s exact location. If the employee moves after pushing the button, the alert will update their new location.

The distress calls are also displayed in the hospital’s Responder 5 nurse call system. For example, if a staff member is being assaulted inside a room, the system will activate a custom light pattern being lit outside the room. All of those calls will ring with a custom tone at designated nurse call consoles.

Alan Butler, CoxHealth’s system director of Public Safety and Security, calls the buttons a critical tool

to curb assaults.

“When Public Safety response is needed and it’s not possible to get to a phone, personal panic buttons fill a critical void,” he says. “PPBs are one more tool in the battle to keep our staff safe and further demonstrate this organization’s commitment to maintaining a safe work and care environment.”

Cox South trialed the use of PPBs in 2020 after the idea was proposed at the health system’s Innovation Accelerator. The technology has proven to be solid and efficient in engaging swift responses to calls in distress, and especially valuable as numbers of incidents dramatically increased over the past year.

According to hospital data, Cox Branson workplace violence figures increased significantly from 2019 to 2020, with the pandemic greatly compounding the issue. Total events increased 94 to 162; total assaults 40 to 123; total injuries 17 to 78; and assaults leading to injury increased from 42.5% to 63%.

Those numbers are of great concern to Angie Smith, Cox Branson Patient Safety facilitator, who wants staff to understand that dealing with violence is not just “part of the job.”

bransonglobe.com “A lot of workplace violence events are underreported as staff don’t feel like they would be able to do anything about it,” Smith says. “The biggest part of being in healthcare now is not only being able to give excellent care to your patient you’ve been assigned and to make them feel safe, but to also feel safe yourself as their primary caregiver.”

“I look at our workplace violence numbers daily, and I am hoping along with our already great team of Public Safety personnel, this will just be an added benefit for our staff to help ensure their safety while being the best for those who need them,” she says.

Conducted by Scott Ford, Chief Technology Officer of Branson Bank, the class – “Think Before You Click” – will include valuable information and insight on such topics as hacking, service scams,

online account access and secure passwords and much more.

Said Ford, “Think Before You Click is aimed at home internet users. The mission is to educate the community about how to avoid online fraud. This type of fraud tends to heavily victimize people who count ‘Good Faith in Others’ as a moral value. The best defense is

knowledge. I feel called to help educate those who need it. Armed with information, we are better equipped to avoid internet-based service and tech support scams, email phishing, and identity theft. Recovery Jamboree offers fall family fun

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Local families whose lives have been touched by addiction recovery community partners enjoyed a day of food and fun on Saturday, September 18, at Sanctuary of Hope. Activities were sponsored by local agencies that serve families and individuals who are in recovery from addiction. Lunch was provided by Alternatives Inc.; various sponsors provided giveaways; and kids enjoyed a bounce house and face painting.

Several volunteers were former clients who now live healthy, productive lives in recovery and are excited about giving back. According to Marietta Hagan of Drug Free Ozarks, a big takeaway from the day was the sense of support and community available in Taney and Stone counties for families dealing with addiction or mental health issues. “It is great for them to see all of us working togeth-

er for their benefit,” said Hagan.

“Nobody is competing; we all want each person to find the services that work best for them.”

Learning continues at area libraries

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer School is back in full swing, bringing a change of schedule as parents or grandparents chauffeur kids to school-related activities and the kids themselves have schoolwork to do. Don’t forget, though, learning continues at area libraries!

Branson High School alum is remembered 20 years after 9/11 tragedy Editor’s Note: This year marked the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy. As Americans, we remember the grief and anger of that day, pay our respects to those who lost their lives, and then we move on for another year. For a Branson-area family, there is no moving on, and the grief is there every day. John Charles Willett was the only child of Ron and Lucy Willett. Following are excerpts from news stories about John published by the University of Missouri - Kansas City (2011) and the New York Times (2001). They have been combined to give you a brief glimpse of the man John was. *** [On September 5, 2011], UMKC commemorated one of its own.

A ceremony held outside Scofield Hall honored alumnus John Willett, who completed his master’s in economics in 2000.

One year later, he was one of 2,606 casualties in the World Trade Center attacks on Sept. 11.

At the time, Willett, 29, was an analyst at Cantor Fitzgerald, an investment bank, and worked on the 101st floor of the north tower, several floors above where the first plane hit at 8:46 a.m.

Willett was the only child of Ron and Lucy Willett.

The ceremony was also attended by Chancellor Leo Morton.

Morton emphasized the importance of commemorating victims, such as Willett.

“I can remember exactly where I was when John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. were assassinated,” Morton said. “And I remember exactly where I was when the towers came down. The difference was the sheer number of people impacted by the tragic events of 9/11.”

In 1993, at age 23, Willett became the youngest county treasurer in Missouri when appointed to that post in Taney County by Gov. Mel Carnahan.

The county is almost all Republican, and when young Mr. Willett, a Democrat, asked prosecutors to investigate the Republican county clerk and tax collector, his political fate was sealed (though the clerk and collector also lost their bids for re- election). Mr. Willett returned to school and got a mas-

ter’s degree. In January, he began working at Cantor Fitzgerald.

One of Ron Willett’s favorite memories came from the heady days when his son was Treasurer Willett.

“I was standing on the courthouse lawn with him one day,” the elder Willett recalled, “and a citizen recognized him as working for the county. The man came up to him and just laid into him unmercifully. John listened very patiently, and then asked the man, `Did you vote?’ The guy said no, and John said, `Then I don’t want to hear it’ and turned and walked away. I felt like I was about 10 feet tall.”

Willett was close to both parents, but his visits became less frequent as he grew older. Before accepting a job in New York, he began work on his Ph.D. at Oxford, and later, Notre Dame. The last time he visited his parents was

on Mother’s Day in 2001.

On 9/11, Ron Willett said he was home when he received news of the attacks, after which he called his wife, who was working at Branson High School, their son’s alma mater.

“It wasn’t until I saw the second plane that it hit me,” Ron Willett said. “A couple of days later, his name showed up on a survivors list.”

Shepherd of the Hills Humane Society named Charity of the Month

ber is the Shepherd of the Hills Humane Society.

of the Hills Expressway, the Shepherd of the Hills Humane Society was started in 2006 by a small group in the Branson community who had a similar vision.

“These individuals pulled animals from the local animal control facility and cared for them in their homes,” explained Jayme Tabuchi, director of the Shepherd of the Hills Humane Society. “They would then take the animals to Petco for adoption days. A board of directors was formed, and a nonprofit thrift store on Veterans Boulevard in downtown Branson was opened to generate funds to set up an adoption center. The adoption center was opened in 2010.

The Humane Society pulls animals from local and other Mis-

souri animal shelters, according to Tabuchi, to alleviate their overcrowding.

Said Tabuchi, “We also take in cats and kittens that are picked up from the city of Branson animal control. These animals are put under a stray hold, if needed, then vetted and put up for adoption.”

Tabuchi continued, “We often field questions from the community regarding animal spay and neuters, injured wildlife, lost and found animals, and how to deal with certain animal behaviors.”

The Shepherd of the Hills Humane Society is run by Tabuchi, who is the organization’s director, as well as an operations coordinator and seven part-time animal technicians. The Humane Society

also relies on help from a number of volunteers.

“Approximately six volunteers come in on a regular weekly basis to help walk dogs, clean kennels, do laundry and anything else we ask of them,” said Tabuchi. “Others pop in as their schedules allow.

One volunteer is responsible for posting adoption updates on our Facebook page, and our volunteer coordinator helps out in the office.

The help we get from our volunteers is so beneficial and greatly appreciated.”

Ron Willett said he and his wife searched for their son in hospitals in both New York and New Jersey, but were unable to find him.

Ron Willett said his wife found a homeless man under a metal staircase who looked like their son, and checked to make sure it wasn’t him.

After learning John’s name was placed on the survivors’ list by mistake, the reality began to sink in, but the Willett’s remained hopeful.

“As a parent, you don’t give up that easily,” Ron Willett said.

A memorial outside the Willett’s home, seven miles north of Branson, Mo., contains a miniature brass replica of the World Trade Center and a cross measuring 6’4”, the height of their son.

At the University of Missouri-Columbia, where Willett completed his undergraduate work in 1995, a John Charles Willett Memorial Scholarship was created in his memory in 2007.

For Willett, ceremonies and memorials aren’t about closure, but preserving the memory of a life cut tragically short.

“People keep using the word ‘closure,’ and I don’t really believe in that word,” Ron Willett

said. “To me, that’s like closing a door and forgetting about it, and that’s not something I can do.”

A bench dedicated to Willett will be placed in the center of the quad between Royall and Flarsheim halls.

“It is right in the middle of everything, exactly where John would want it to be and where it will be seen by many,” said Dr. Karen Vorst, economics professor and former dean of Arts and Sciences at UMKC. “A plaque will help us remember him, and our hope is that that bench will become a point of reflection and calm.”

Trust and Verify: Tips for choosing a dependable contractor

By Stephanie Barney, Owner, Lightspeed Electric We’ve all heard the horror stories about hiring the wrong contractor and getting burned. Here are some tips to help you choose wisely when you need to hire a skilled tradesman for a home repair.

-Don’t hire out-of-state contractors. Think about it: if they are skilled workers and have great reputations, they would be busy enough in their hometown, instead of seeking less profitable work remotely with its added travel costs. Also, if a contractor does a poor job, it is next to impossible to legally pursue someone who resides over a state line.

-Check Google reviews. These are placed directly by clients and cannot be altered by companies.

Look for reviews with details… not just stars.

-Ask for a Certificate of Insurance (COI) from the contractor before he starts the work. These are easy to obtain, as contractors call insurance companies daily to request that “COIs” be sent to customers. Do not work with someone who cannot show you proof of insurance because it will become your expensive liability if a physical or workmanship accident occurs.

-Call to verify that the company has a business license somewhere. When a company doesn’t have a business license, it is a sign that they do not pull permits.

Fishing tournament to benefit those with disabilities

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Branson’s Coffee Creations coffee shop will host a fishing tournament this weekend.

Fishing for Possibilities is set for Saturday at K Dock Marina.

A $50 entry fee per boat will be collected. An additional $10 entry fee gets participants into the Big Bass competition. Registration begins at 6 a.m., and the event gets underway at 7 a.m. Weigh-in is set for 3 p.m.

The public is invited to attend the weigh-in, and join the festivities, which will include food, raffles and more. A highlight of the day will be the Big Bass Contest, where the winner will take home a $200 cash prize. First, second and third place trophies will also be presented, courtesy of Tiffany Pemberton and Custom Design.

Proceeds from the event will be used to fund expenses of Coffee Creations,

a nonprofit coffee shop that provides employment training and opportunities for those in Taney and Stone Counties with intellectual disabilities. The goal of Coffee Creations is to help their employees develop strong work skills and support them in their personal employment goals, as they strive to be productive members of the community.

Coffee Creations is currently open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., but funds from the tournament will enable them to be open more hours this fall and winter season.

Frightful Feline Fridays begin on Friday, October 1, and continue each Friday night through the month of October. The Friday night events will include a makeand-take craft project led by a local artist and a family friendly Halloween-themed movie, shown on a big screen in the cat lounge.

Guests will enjoy hot chocolate and popcorn and the company of plenty of furry friends.

On October 1, the featured movie is the Disney Channel original “Halloweentown” and the craft is a cat-themed wreath.

October 8, enjoy the adventures of young Norman Babcock in “ParaNorman,” after decorating pumpkins.

On October 15, the night will include vampire cat painting, followed by the fun-filled witchery of “Hocus Pocus.”

On October 22, a session of spooky jewelry crafting will be followed by the Tim Burton classic “Nightmare Before Christmas.”

For the final Frightful Feline Friday, October 29, those in attendance will enjoy assorted crafts, followed by the antics of a friendly ghost with Casper.

By Daryl Weather, Branson Globe Weather Forecaster Autumn, also known as Fall in North American English, is one of the four temperate seasons. Outside the tropics, autumn marks the transition from summer to winter, in September (Northern Hemisphere) or March (Southern Hemisphere), autumn is the season when the duration of daylight becomes noticeably shorter and the temperature cools considerably. Day length decreases and night length increases as the season progresses until the Winter Solstice in December (Northern Hemisphere) and June (Southern Hemisphere). One of its main features in temperate climates is the striking change in color for the leaves of deciduous trees as they prepare to shed.

Some cultures regard the autumnal equinox as “mid-autumn,” while others with a longer temperature lag treat the equinox as the start of autumn.

In the English-speaking world, autumn traditionally began with Lammas Day and ended around Hallowe’en, the approximate mid-points between midsummer, the autumnal equinox and midwinter. Meteorologists and most of the temperate countries in the southern hemisphere use a definition based on Gregorian calendar months, with autumn being September, October, and November in the northern hemisphere, and March, April, and May in the southern hemisphere.

In North America, autumn traditionally starts with the September equinox (21 to 24 September) and ends with the winter solstice (21 or 22 December). Popular culture in the United States associates Labor Day, the first Monday in September, as the end of summer and the start of autumn; certain summer traditions, such as wearing white, are discouraged

Shakespeare in the Park returns with ‘The Tempest’ Submitted to Branson Globe The Branson Regional Arts Council is thrilled to host its fourth annual Shakespeare in the Park production of “The Tempest” at Chad A. Fuqua Memorial Park, 312 Esplanade Drive, Hollister.

Summary of “The Tempest”: Prospero uses magic to conjure a

storm and torment the survivors of a shipwreck, including the King of Naples and Prospero’s treacherous brother, Antonio. Prospero’s slave, Caliban, plots to rid himself of his master but is thwarted by Prospero’s spirit-servant Ariel. The King’s young son Ferdinand, thought to be dead, falls in love with Prospero’s daughter Miranda. Their celebrations are cut short when Prospero confronts his brother and reveals his identity as the usurped Duke of Milan. The families are reunited and all conflict is resolved. Prospero grants Ariel his freedom and prepares to leave the island.

Past BRAC Shakespeare in the Park performances have been in cooperation with Forte Theatrical Productions and included “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Romeo and Juliet,” and a rock version of “Hamlet.” Each of these productions was held outdoors on the pavilion stage in Chad A. Fuqua Memorial Park, and the Branson Regional Arts Council thanks the City of Hollister and the Hollister Parks Department for their support and cooperation in making these community events possible.

BEREAVEMENT GROUP will be presented at Branson Christian Church, 213 South Commercial Street, starting September 28 and ending November 9. It will be held every Tuesday morning from 10:30 to noon. Half of each session will be teaching and half will be interaction. Every session will have a topic such as, “Can a broken heart really be mended?”
