By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Many braved the chilly weather on a beautiful Tuesday morning recently to attend a Rise and Shine Ceremony at Branson Bank to honor the organization’s recent ‘Veterans of the Quarter.’

In the past, the Branson Bank has paid tribute to a different area veteran every three months as their Veteran of the Quarter.

During the COVID-19 pandemic when public gatherings were discouraged, those celebrations were put on hold, but bank officials and community members gathered last week to celebrate the Veterans of the quarter for the previous 18 months.

Those in attendance were treated to beautiful music by Branson vocalist Nicole Starling, including a stunning rendition of the National Anthem. The Branson High SEE CEREMONY, PAGE 5

Bull Shoals flooding discussed

Michaels, Staff Writer Members of the Forsyth community were invited to hear information regarding recent flooding events in our area, presented by Bruce Caldwell, Chief of Natural Resources with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Based out of Mountain Home, AR, Caldwell works primarily with Bull Shoals and Norfork Lakes, located in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas.

Caldwell began his talk by giving a brief history of the area, specifically the building of the Bull Shoals Dam and Bull Shoals Lake.

Winners of 2021 Branson Terry Awards announced

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer The annual Terry Awards ceremony, a celebration of Branson musicians and vocalists, was held this past weekend at The Branson Famous Theater.

The prestigious awards event was founded in Texas in 1977 by Terry Beene, who was a radio personality at the time. Beene held the award show in Texas until 2014, when he brought his famed show to Branson.

Beene’s Terry Awards is a way to honor and pay tribute to area entertainers, and as a nonprofit or-

ganization, to also to provide aid to those musicians who need a bit of financial help.

Entertainers were treated to a special pre-show gala reception at Branson’s Little Hacienda, courtesy of All Access of Branson. The performers then walked the red carpet into a packed theater for the exciting event.

Of this year’s Terry Awards, founder Terry Beene said, “It was amazing – the best one yet – thanks to the Branson Globe and all the media!”

incidents over a span of several decades, including the “Great Flood of 1927,” deemed one of the nation’s worst disasters. The area also suffered a devastating flood in 1937, which prompted Congress to pass the Flood Control Act of 1938, in an effort to control flooding in the Mississippi River Valley.

In 1941, Congress wrote a check, according to Caldwell, to buy land for what would become Bull Shoals Lake and Bull Shoals Dam to be built for flood control.

Eastern Taney County Senior Friendship Center becomes debt free Submitted to Branson Globe The Eastern Taney County Senior Friendship Center recently held a “Land Loan Payoff Ceremony” at the site for the new Eastern Taney County Senior Friendship Center, located along East Hwy. 76 next to the farmers market in Forsyth.

Eastern Taney County Senior Friendship Center serves seniors from nine area communities, including Walnut Shade, Rockaway Beach, Merriam Woods, Forsyth, Kissee Mills, Taneyville, Bradleyville, Kirbyville and Cedar Creek.

In 2016 the Senior Center Board

was running out of room to serve its seniors. In 2017 the board purchased 8 1/2 acres located on East Highway 76 for $225,000. Numerous fundraisers and donations made it possible to put a $25,000 down payment on the property. The remaining $200,000 was loaned to the board by the Herschend Family Foundation. Revenue from the Senior Thrift Store and community donations was used to pay the loan down to $179,501.00 by 2019.

Cooking classes for Type 2 diabetics offered at Faith Community Health

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer For people with Type 2 diabetes, one of the most perplexing questions is, “What do I eat?” The question is important, since it is possible to manage diabetes successfully and avoid complications with careful attention to diet and lifestyle.

Faith Community Health of Branson, in collaboration with Christian Action Ministries (CAM) and the University of Missouri Extension, has secured grant funds to offer at least two sets of six-week courses designed to help persons with Type 2 diabetes prepare healthy meals and learn other diabetes management skills. The first class, “Living Healthy with Diabetes and High Blood Pressure,” is an introduction to the lifestyle changes needed. The class currently being taught, “Cooking Matters,” delves into nutritious recipes and cooking techniques, with live demonstrations. A recent class covered ways to incorporate additional fruits and vegetables into the diet by analyzing meals and choosing snacks wisely, before learning to prepare a healthy entrée and delicious vegetable salad. Class members also discussed healthy, tasty alternatives for the “empty” calories—calories that don’t contribute significant nu-

trition—found in sugary drinks such as soda. Topics over the six weeks will include tips for saving time and stress in the kitchen; budget-friendly and/or healthier ingredient substitutions; ideas for involving children in cooking; and how to prep and freeze meals ahead of time to avoid last-minute bad choices due to busy schedules.

Faith Community grant specialist Carol Harris said grants were provided by Baxter International Pharmaceuticals and Direct Relief, a group that partners with organizations like FCH to make medications available for low-income and uninsured populations.

“Cooking Matters” is taught by Jenni Nevatt, MU Extension Nutrition and Health Specialist for Taney and Stone counties. Grant

funds provided a demonstration kitchen at FCH, plus materials including a take-home bag of groceries and useful items at each session. Participants who meet attendance goals receive an additional grant-funded incentive of an air fryer, a healthy and versatile way to prepare meals. In addition to the lesson and Q & A, attendees watch a demonstration of recipe preparation and receive a portion to try.

Branson residents are encouraged to submit the names of family members or friends who have served in the military to Branson Bank, so that they might be recognized and honored for their service and accomplishments.

Of the various methods available to correct the deficiency, it seems as if the emphasis for correcting the deficit leans towards an increase in user fees.

for different services provided by the city directly to them. These include fees for building and event permits, youth and other sports, Branson city campground fees, sunshine requests, etc.

“Now hold on, Seagull, why increase fees to Branson residents and businesses except as a last resort?” “Don’t believe the Board will. An Ole Seagull’s concern is that they could reach that conclusion without thinking “out of the box” for less obvious ways to cut the deficit.”

“Give us an example of what you mean when you say ‘out of the box.’’ “OK.” Each year the City of Branson allocates over a million dollars year from its tourism tax to the

Branson Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and CVB (CVB) to market Branson. A large part of its marketing of Branson is through its website, “Explore Branson. com.” It’s an excellent website presenting the total Branson experience; its shows, attractions, lakes, lodging, etc.

“But Seagull, isn’t that a good thing?” “Absolutely, in the majority.”

But from an “out-of-the-box way” to help eliminate the general fund deficit, Branson kind of shoots itself in the foot. One of Branson’s primary sources of revenue is from its tourism tax, a 4% tax on all show and attraction tickets and lodging. Explore Branson sells advertising on its site for

show attractions and other businesses, including discount ticket sellers.

If a discount ticket seller sells a $40 show ticket for $30, the city of Branson loses $.40 in tourism tax revenues that could go toward helping reduce the general fund deficit. Not much on one ticket, but it adds up with the sale of each discounted ticket. At a 25% discount on a $40 ticket, the city loses $40 in tax revenue on every 100 tickets sold, $400 on every 1,000 tickets sold, $4,000 for every 10,000 tickets and $40,000 for every 100,000 tickets sold.

• I picked up my 2-year-old daughter when we were at the pumpkin patch this weekend and she said, “Papa wet and stinky. Papa need baff.”

• The other day the boys noticed they kept saying “fur” instead of “for.” One of them noted, “It’s like our mouths just gave up!”

• One day while making supper, my daughter came up and asked me what I was making.

When I told her I was making dumplings, I could see her little mind go into deep thought. Then, with a look of excitement she exclaimed, “Humpty dumplings?!”

“What did you say?” “I don’t want to say.” “Say it.” “I said Dane (Dang) it.” “Why did you say that?” “Cause I just wanted peace.”

Reflections: Why study the Bible?

I had to come to terms with those questions as a young adult even though I was raised in church. If studying the Bible doesn’t matter, why waste time?

The answer is that it does matter. First of all, in a world where the rules seem to change daily, let’s establish that the Bible 1) is true, and 2) is relevant. You can’t just flip to any old page and pull out a verse; study takes effort, along with allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal truth. You’ll find Old Testament prophecies to be accurate, and there is consistency in the story of the Bible across the centuries; you’ll also find some prophecy yet to be fulfilled, which can give guidance for today’s uncertainties. People much smarter than me, ranging from early Church fathers, to C.S. Lewis, to more contemporary writers like Josh McDowell, have done research showing hundreds of manuscripts (not modern paraphrases, but actual early copies)

That said, how does a centuries-old book relate? As the Bible itself says in Ecclesiastes, there’s “nothing new under the sun.” Human foibles haven’t changed; the temptations faced by the patriarchs and the challenges faced by the apostles are amazingly like today. The Bible can help us make good practical and moral decisions; 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us “all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable,” citing doctrine [what to believe], correction [identifying wrong choices or false teachings], and instruction in righteousness [how to live a life that pleases God].

Peter’s epistle reminds us salvation isn’t a “one and done;” we must continue to build on our knowledge and faith or else, Peter warns, we’ll forget God’s mercy and return to old habits.

Most of us know someone who prayed a salvation prayer but ended up right back in trouble because they didn’t change their lifestyle. It’s easy to get distracted when we’re constantly bombarded by ideas, many of which upon examination have absolutely no foundation. Truth is considered relative, so why is yours better than mine or vice versa?

I’m old enough to remember when school started after Labor Day before college, an unspoken homage to the days when America’s world turned on agriculture and was, in some semblance, associated with the seasons.

With the exception of history, art, literature, and writing. Go figure. But I loved the season, the rhythm of the

Not everyone is called to vocational ministry, but we all interact with a fallen society. If you haven’t made daily Bible study a habit, start now. There are great resources to help give context, including some by people I’ve mentioned, but don’t delay; just do it!

But my dislike of school in September diminished thanks to a certain graphic design department and a teacher and a department chair with an appreciation for the vocationally plucky and a perennial disdain of bureaucracy, academic and otherwise. It was in those graphic arts classes I found the power of the press, the power of art, the power of communicating to the people.

I fell in love with the interconnection of art and life and liberty and history. There was a poetry in the press, the press that changed the world with the Gutenberg Bible, with Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, the magnificence of craft in the lines of 1930s’ era newspapers, and, ultimately, with the power of words and the freedom of those words to encircle a globe, to bring ideas, and hope and inspiration to millions if they could but read.

There was a hot September wind that blew through my classroom, once, long ago, in a September not unlike this one.

And with each new day and each turning page, I am reminded how precious our printing presses, our liberties, and this nation are.

Own a piece of history: Austrian crystals from the Grand Palace chandelier are for sale Submitted to Branson Globe The Branson Centennial Museum will have crystals from the Grand Palace chandelier available for sale at the museum beginning on Friday, October 1. The iconic light fixture was donated to the Museum by Kuvera Partners last year.

Since then, the 15-foot tall chandelier has been dismantled, cleaned, sorted and prepared for sale.

Thousands of crystals will adorn Branson’s second annual community Christmas tree, some will be displayed at the Branson Centennial Museum, and others will be offered for sale. Christmas ornaments, jewelry items, candy dishes, sun catchers and bulk crystals and crystal strands will be sold with all proceeds benefiting the museum and their mission to preserve and present the history of our area.

“In February 2020, we approached Kuvera Partners for the donation,” explains Jim Babcock, co-curator of the Branson Centennial Museum with his wife Jean. “Both they and White River Valley Historic Society, of which we are an affiliate, wanted to preserve and showcase this iconic chandelier from the region’s largest and most elaborate performance venue of its time.”

The original fixture was created by the Gross Chandelier Company in St. Louis, Missouri (now G Lighting). The family-owned company was able to provide ex-

tensive documentation of the design by E. Linton Gross III (now deceased) and other details to the Branson Centennial Museum for their exhibit.

The original fixture was 15 feet tall, 10 feet-4 inches across and featured 141 lights. It was delivered to the theater in January 1992 for a price of $40,000.

Since acquisition of the chandelier, extensive volunteer hours have been dedicated to reclaiming its elements, cleaning, sorting, and organizing thousands of crystals, candlesticks and polished brass and nickel adornments. Strands of crystals and crystal colonial ar-

rows will be featured on the 2021 Community Christmas Tree, “Be The Light,” set to debut on November 4 on West 76 Country Boulevard between the Branson Ferris Wheel and Holidays on Ice skating rink. Other items from the chandelier are on display and for sale at the Branson Centennial Museum.

Embers Lounge plans anniversary benefit event

Saturday, October 16, from 12 noon to 8 p.m., Embers will celebrate its one-year anniversary on Branson Landing with a benefit for the Taney County 100 Club.

Embers Lounge is located at #9 S. Boardwalk, south of Bass Pro and next to Paddlewheel Pub, and is open 12 to 8 p.m. daily except Sundays.

Holding special events to benefit local charities is not new for owners Kevin and Betsy McConnell, who opened Embers Cigar Lounge wanting to help meet needs and make a difference in the community. “We ap-

preciate the vibe of Branson, especially the way the community supports veterans,” said Kevin.

All proceeds from the October 16 event will go to the Taney County 100 Club, which assists the surviving families of local firefighters, law enforcement officers and paramedics who are killed or seriously injured in the line of duty. A full meal, provided by the Branson IMAX Entertainment Complex, will be available for a $15 donation, and raffle tickets are $25 for a custom AR-15 .556 complete with laser engraving compliments of Branson Cerakote. Premium cigar-maker Rocky Patel is offering specials for the event, and additional raffle items are being donated by local businesses; any business wanting to help can contact the McConnells at 417334-7070 for more information.

In May of 2020 the Senior Furniture Store opened for business.

Many people in the surrounding area made the furniture store a complete success with their donations All these funds combined made it possible to pay off the $179,501.00 land loan in July of 2021. In 20 months, less than two years, the seniors of the Eastern Taney County Senior Association are debt free!

At this time the Senior Center is focused on the building fund for a $1.3 million facility. The board and community continue to host fundraisers for a new building.

Tickets for their “$500-A-Month” raffle are available at the thrift store and senior center. They will sell only 1,000 tickets and net $14,000 for the building fund. These tickets are $20 each and will be good for the entire year of 2022. ALG honors local couple

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer During a weekend of Branson awards shows, to be aired on the ALG Gospel Network, the Network made a special award presentation of its own.

Randy and Gail Baar were presented the ALG Open Heart Award, courtesy of the ALG Gospel Network.

Randy and Gail, originally from Wisconsin, are founders of the Spirit of America Hour, which airs each Sunday on the ALG Network.

The couple served with American Missionary Fellowship for more than 10 years, where they produced, directed and hosted a Christian television talk show, which would later become the “Spirit of America Hour.” The program features interviews with those wishing to share their personal testimony of life struggles and victories through Jesus Christ.

Said James Marvell, associate producer of the ALG Gospel Network, “Randy Baar has had tremendous health hurdles but still does his very best to be a servant to all he meets. His show, “The Spirit of America Hour,” is seen on the ALG Gospel Network every Sunday at 8 p.m. central time.”

Submitted to Branson Globe What would you ask an astronaut? WonderWorks is giving people a rare chance to pick the brain of an astronaut. They are hosting an “Ask An Astronaut” online event, where retired NASA astronaut Dr. Don Thomas will answer questions that have been submitted by the public. Teachers and students are encouraged to submit their questions now, and Dr. Thomas will answer as many as he can in a video interview that will be shared on social media on October 2, at 10 a.m. EST. “It’s part of our mission at WonderWorks to provide outreach programs that spark the imagination of the next generation of scientists, engineers, inventors and even astronauts,” explains Taylor Geraghty, education manager at WonderWorks.

“It’s important to us to be able to engage our communities virtually

during this time to keep creativity and education alive. We’re so excited to work with Dr. Don Thomas to give students the opportunity to ask questions and learn from his experience and inspire young minds.”

Many people have questions for astronauts, such as how one becomes an astronaut, what the career entails and how much time they spend in space? Some of the more unique questions submitted so far include, “how do astronauts go to the bathroom in space” and “do astronauts need to know Russian in order to go to the International Space Station?”

All these questions and many more will be answered when Dr. Thomas hosts the Q&A session that will be posted on WonderWorks’ social media. Teachers should encourage students interested in space to submit questions and watch the event. This rare op-

portunity provides students an engaging way to learn about space travel directly from an astronaut.

“I always love working with the WonderWorks’ team to share my story with young students,” says Dr. Don Thomas. “At that age, the excitement and wonder of space is alive within them, and they ask the most amazing questions about the experience, my career and the science behind it all. Harvest Moon Festival brings many to Forsyth

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Thousands attended the Harvest Moon Festival in Forsyth this past weekend, an annual tradition that began more than 50 years ago. The fun-filled event included music, arts and crafts demonstrations, a dog pageant, a parade, kids’ activities and lots of family fun.

event among attendees. Winners for the 2021 pageant included Nacole Lynn, winner; and Emmory Canada, first runner-up, in the three and four-year-old category.

Benni Stein was the winner among the five to seven-year-olds, and first runner-up was Alexis Simons.

Volunteers prepare venue for upcoming new show

The Freedom Journey Show will take place in the Freedom Encounter Theater, formerly the Yellow Ribbon Theater, beginning in November.

The Freedom Journey Show, featuring reenactors, live music, and use of a 42-foot wide video screen, will pay tribute to America’s founding documents, while honoring military veterans and active duty servicemen and women and first responders.

Guests will experience a journey of tyranny, faith and freedom.

teers gathered at the Freedom Encounter Theater on Saturday to clean and ready the theater grounds, inside and out, in preparation for the upcoming shows.

The Freedom Journey Show, a coffee shop and a bookstore are just the first of many exciting things planned for the Freedom Encounter Theater.

Skaggs Foundation funds sensory room at Elevate Branson Submitted to Branson Globe Elevate Branson has one of the only sensory rooms in the area open to the public. The calming blue room is filled with an oversized Light Brite, an air waves machine that stands more than six feet tall, giant Kinetic sand tables, spinning boards, cabinets full of games and activities and much more. The sensory equipment was funded by a Skaggs Legacy Endowment grant from Skaggs Foundation.

“Spending time in the sensory room helps children improve their visual, auditory and tactical processing as well as fine and gross motor skills,” explains Elevate Branson’s Children’s Director Cathy Brown.

The sensory room provides children with special needs a sense of calmness and comfort where they can learn to self-regulate behavior and improve focus.

“We support a lot of kids who have endured trauma, have ADHD and autism,” Brown said.

While the sensory room provides a safe, calming space for children with special needs, all children can benefit from the room and enjoy the activities.

“The kids are very creative because these are things they don’t usually get to do at home,” Brown said. Many of the children served at Elevate Branson reside in weekly-stay motels where space for play and toys is limited.

Throughout the summer, the room was open to the public on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. With school back in session, the room continues to stay busy with Elevate Branson hosting afterschool tutoring, services and classes.

“Missouri travelers depend on us to treat and plow the roads through the winter storms. Individuals can apply for an emergency maintenance equipment operator position. These are seasonal crew members who help out when inclement weather hits.

College of the Ozarks ranked No. 1 Best Bang for the Buck, per Washington Monthly 2021 ranking Submitted to Branson Globe College of the Ozarks was recently ranked by Washington Monthly, earning No.1 Best Bang for the Buck in the Midwest and No. 2 Bachelor’s College. Stock Market Insights: ‘Bouncing’ down the road with the stock market

The stock market’s 50-day Moving Average sort of does the same thing. The 50-day moving average is probably the most used technical indicators with investors. It helps us see trends in stock to see where the stock or index is gaining strength or showing weakness by drawing a line on the chart that shows the average closing price from the past 50 trading sessions.

Since the most recent record high on September 2, 2021, the S&P 500 fell about 2% until September 14 where it “bounced” off its 50-day moving average. What I am wondering is how long will the S&P 500, a gauge for the total stock market, continue to bounce off its 50-day average and continue to go back up.

The S&P 500 flirted with its 50day average eight times this year

(I drew arrows noting six of them on the chart above), bouncing off it each time and going back up, except one time. That caught my attention.

The S&P 500 didn’t immediately bounce back up from its 50-day average on Friday, September17, 2021, which could be a warning sign of a correction in the making.

That Friday had a lot of negatives going on such as the stock market index futures, stock market index options, and stock options all expiring which historically makes for a volatile day.

The market closed below its 50day average a few times this year and then went back above that level not long after. But when it did it on September 17, it felt different to me. Time will tell us if it was just a bad day or a start to a new trend.

The day I took my first investment licensing exam I fell asleep on the way home and bounced

off the railing which woke me up and saved my life. Bouncing off something works great until the time you are going too fast and you break through the barrier. I hope the market keeps bouncing upward.

Caldwell explained that Congress is responsible for management of the flood waters and water releases under the White River Basin Water Control Plan. Under this plan, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages the flood waters through the White River chain of lakes, which includes Bull Shoals Lake.

Bull Shoals is the largest catch basin among all of the lakes along the White River for flood waters.

Caldwell described to those in attendance how flood management works, noting that during and immediately following a heavy rain, water is held, then released as conditions downstream allow. Caldwell explained that the water release from Bull Shoals Lake is controlled by a flood stage gauge in Newport, Arkansas, and that the flood control plan is not optimal for any single user, since it is a part of a multi-user system, adding that there is always risk associated with working and living near lakes and rivers.

Caldwell added that the White River Basin Water Control Plan is now being studied to see if any changes in the plan should be implemented Caldwell answered a number of questions posed to him by the audience.

In answer to the question ‘Why have there been so many floods on Bull Shoals Lake lately, when before there never seemed to be this much flooding?” Caldwell responded, “I have been on Bull Shoals Lake with the Corps since 1985. In my first 23 years I experienced only three significant high water events. In my last 13 years, since 2008, there have been nine significant events. The answer is a definite shift in our weather patterns. Four of the wettest years on record occurred in 2009, 2015, 2018 and 2019. Above average rainfall has occurred in 12 of the 13 years since 2008. When these high rainfall years have a concentrated timeframe for heavy rain,

usually in the spring, it causes a large amount of flood water that needs to be held, thus the flooding on Bull Shoals Lake. In 2013, the implementation of a congressionally mandated plan at Bull Shoals for minimum flows went into effect.

The plan reallocates five feet of flood control storage at Bull Shoals Lake for the minimum flows to keep the White River in a more stable and deeper state for the health of the aquatic habitats below Bull Shoals Dam. However, it decreased the flood storage capability. Less storage means faster filling of the flood pool.”

Caldwell also responded to the question “Why does it seem like Table Rock Lake is allowed to drop faster than Bull Shoals Lake?” Said

Caldwell, “Water releases on Beaver Lake and Table Rock Lake, which empty into the next White River lake downstream are managed differently than Bull Shoals Lake and Norfork Lake which empty directly into the White River, and therefore directly affect flooding in the wide and flat White River flood plains downstream.

Bull Shoals Lake is controlled by the flood stage gauge on the White River at Newport, Arkansas. Bull Shoals is not allowed by the congressionally signed WRB Water Control Plan to add to already present flood conditions at Newport and must wait until the gauge falls below a certain level before water releases above normal operations can be released.”

Caldwell added that the mission of Bull Shoals Lake has not changed and won’t unless Congress changes its mission. Because that is not likely to happen, we must assume that high water levels will continue, and we need to provide camping opportunities, boat launches and build up roads where possible, so that we can maintain these activities in high-water events that usually occur during peak tourism seasons.

Oct. 1, 2021 • 29 The Corps of Engineers has plans to build camping sites and boat ramps at higher elevations where possible, but these improvements will not be possible unless proper funding is attained.

Caldwell encouraged all in attendance to work with their local, regional, state and Congressional legislators to help provide funding for these and similar projects to improve the use of the lake during high water events.
