Lights of Joy, an exquisite Christmas lighting extravaganza, will open for the 2021 sea-

son with all new displays. Work began recently on putting up the new displays. It takes a big crew and a lot of coordination to put the Christmas light drive-thru on. Some of the displays are over 20 feet tall. “When you are

in your car you don’t always realize how big these displays can be.”

The Taney County 100 Club’s mission is to provide support to the families of our area’s fallen heroes.

“Branson Auction owners Jim and Kathy Cox have a heart for ensuring the families of first responders are protected, and they collected about 20 donated items, which were auctioned off at a special VIP event on Thursday night,” explained the Taney County 100 Club’s Cory Roebuck.

The fundraiser provided $13,550 in needed funds for the 100 Club. Donations included an Indian motorcycle scooter, a Tracker bass boat, and a number SEE 100 CLUB, PAGE 22

and Fire Departments with their families showed up to support the Alumni Association. Officers Gamble and Ward attended and gave attendees an inside look at the K-9 vehicle and their K-9 officers.

The Alumni Association is dedicated to supporting the Branson Police Department (BPD) and promoting

public support for the department. The Pizza Ranch FUNdraiser gave the public an opportunity to meet Branson Police Officers; learn about the Branson Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association; learn about future Branson Citizens Police Academy availability; and provide an opportunity to support the Branson PD.

Hot air balloons to drift into Branson air space

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Branson visitors and residents alike are in for a rare treat for the next ten days, as hot air balloons fill the sky over Branson.

“The balloons are coming to Branson,” said hot air balloon pilot and owner of Branson Balloon, Rodney Williams. “We have about 15 balloons from Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Nebraska, Texas and Mis-

souri from October 22 - 31.”

“Some are coming the first weekend and others will be here the second weekend. Five or six will be staying the whole time,” Williams noted.

Morning flights will be offered to the public by reservation. The balloons will fly only once each day, right after sunrise, at approximately 7:30 a.m., weather permitting.

“The launch sites and paths that the

balloons fly vary based on the direction of the wind each day,” Williams noted. “We try to select a launch site that will take us over Branson as much as possible.”

This is an excellent opportunity for a bird’s eye view of Branson.

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Central Bank of Branson has selected Elevate Branson as their October Charity of the Month.

Elevate Branson, formerly known as Jesus Was Homeless, was founded by Bryan and Amy Stallings.

“Amy and I hosted a Thanksgiving dinner in 2008 for those living in Branson area motels and the homeless,” explained Bryan Stallings. “After that, we didn’t want to wait another year to do something, so we landed on delivering a sack lunch style meal to motels in January of 2009.”

Because many of those that the Stallings family served had no real place to call home, Bryan and Amy called their organization ‘Jesus Was Homeless,’ based on a verse in scripture, Matthew 8:20, which says in part, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

Those sack lunches, complete with nutritious food and a beverage, a hand decorated sack and a sheet directing the recipient to various resources in our community, were first assembled in Stallings’ living room and were handed out to the area’s homeless and working poor who were living in the extended stay motels in the Branson area. Many began to look for-

ward to the weekly meals, as well as the visit from Bryan and Amy and an ever-growing group of volunteers.

Throughout the years, Bryan and Amy continued to serve those needing a hand up in our community, providing not only meals, but a variety of other needed services, as well.

In 2017, Jesus Was Homeless moved to their current location, a renovated theater on Branson’s Gretna Road, where they were able to hold weekly church services, assemble meals, and even open a thrift store to help fund the many services they provided. The organization continued to grow.

In 2020, the decision was made to change the name of the nonprofit organization from Jesus Was Homeless to Elevate Branson, as the new name better reflected the organization’s efforts to help Branson residents to rise up and find their way out of poverty.

“We provide a wide variety of services for our neighbors,” said Bryan. “Elevate Work is our workforce development program that focuses on career advancement and helping people obtain the skills and tools it takes to earn and keep a sustainable job and find purposeful work. year, but in the past five years, technology has advanced and we wanted to be on the cutting edge,” explained Steve Hager, manager of Lights of Joy. “So much more of our drive-thru this year is animated. It’s better, brighter and really a lot of fun.”

Lights of Joy first opened in Branson in 2015, after the Branson Convention and Visitors Bureau discontinued their annual Festival of Lights.

Said Hager, “We just couldn’t imagine Branson losing such a great Christmas attraction.

It is something that families have done together for years.

Hager, who has been a part of the beloved lighting attraction since its inception, added, “Every year since opening, we have played host to a record number of guests. We expect this year will be a record breaker, too.

Motor coaches have returned to Branson. So, we expect to see many of them. We are the only Christmas drive-thru in Branson that can host motor coaches and limos without difficulty.

The Lights of Joy Christmas Drive-Thru is easily accessible for motor coaches and limos with no hills too steep or corners too sharp,” Hager said. “Since we are open until 11 p.m., we get a good number of coaches after the shows are out.”

Lights of Joy is conveniently located near all of Branson’s popular shows and attractions, just off of Shepherd of the Hills Expressway.

“Our displays begin across the street from Sight and Sound Theatre, then turn down Expressway Lane and continue past the Royal Oak Charcoal Plant and exit onto Roark Valley Road,” said Hager. “That is 1.5 miles of super bright LED lights in some of the most whimsical displays one can imagine. Of course, we have a brand new nativity scene as well. We placed it where folks can pull over, off the road, and take pictures and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”

A special preview night will occur on Saturday, October 30, with the Tri-Lakes KLIFE Lights of Joy 5K run to go through the Lights of Joy. The run will start at Westgate Resorts and will be a fundraiser for Tri-lakes KLIFE. People will be encouraged to put on their favorite Halloween or

By Pat Lamb Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone in the world had good manners and an attitude of humility? There are seven words that could create a humble, repentant and thankful attitude. They are words that every child should learn to use intuitively. They are words that would do away with rudeness and self-centeredness. They are “excuse me,” “I’m sorry,” “please,” and “thank you.”

To say “excuse me” and “I’m sorry” in a meaningful way requires an attitude of repentance.

It requires an individual to put the other person’s feelings before one’s own feelings. It also creates within a child an attitude of caution in the use of words or actions that may be offensive to another. It requires giving up one’s own desires for the benefit of those in the immediate vicinity.

In this respect, humility is fostered in the same way that saying “please” fosters humility.

It is so easy to teach children to say these seven words, yet parents often forget to do so. If all children were taught to say them, they would grow up with better attitudes and everyone would get along with each other. People who are humble do not put themselves above others. People who appreciate what they get are not people who demand more and more of others.

People who appreciate what they have are not constantly trying to get more at the expense of others. People who are humble do not put others down.

Using the seven words named is simply a matter of good manners. We know that the basis of all good manners is kindness and consideration of others. It is such a simple and easy thing to teach children to use these words and mean them. The word “please,” when said in a meaningful way, requires an attitude of humility. Rather than feeling above a person to demand something for self, an individual must lower self to a position of “if you think I am worthy, I request a favor from you.” The very act is a demonstration that the person saying the word considers him/herself in a lower position than the person to whom the request is being given. It is a “magic word” that causes the person being addressed to be more apt to give the favor than if it were demanded.

Obviously, the words “thank you” express appreciation when said in a meaningful way. As we observe children who are required to say these two words, we often see them pause just a bit before they are spoken. In this time of pause, a child is forced to realize that something is owed to the per-

We live thinking that if somehow our life dice would have just fallen into the right sequence, then we could be much more fulfilled and happy.

Much of our time is spent seeking direction and motivation just to conquer the day that awaits ahead of us; looking into the mir-

ror and finding you don’t recognize the person staring back at you anymore.

What would you say if I said you really can find direction, even though your past and present seem scattered beyond all repair? What would you say if I told you all your past, whether bad or good, is part of an orchestrated destiny planned out by the greatest conductor known to man?

You might be saying to yourself, “Wait a minute! I’ve lied and cheated! I’ve lived in ways that were so degrading that my need

for existence was in question!”

I would say, just like the lost explorer who found a compass lying in the bristly brambles in which he trudged, you, my friend, can have direction. A compass needle aligns itself and points toward the top of Earth’s magnetic field, giving explorers and lost souls a consistent sense of direction.

Creator God can do the same for you. All your past, good or bad, has brought you to this point in life amongst the brambles, to direct you down a narrower path that leads to life!

Reflections: Standing faithful

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer This week has been filled with reflection as my dad, a 95-year-old World War II veteran, moved from his frail earthly body to his heavenly home. His long-time pastor at Harrison Faith Assembly, Rev. Arlis Thrasher, gave a wonderful memorial sermon emphasizing the faithfulness of many members of “The Greatest Generation.”

Pastor Thrasher chose for his text Ezekiel 22:30, “So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one” (NKJV). The scripture’s context is the punishment of Israel’s disobedience, when the number of people

who sincerely sought God dwindled to few or none.

Pastor Thrasher then spoke about the faithfulness of my dad and other older congregants to pray for their families, the church, the nation, and God’s work around the world. He pointed out that those prayers by godly older saints may well have held back the cultural unraveling we are seeing in recent years, as those people pass on to be with the Lord. The sermon closed with a challenge to step up and be faithful in prayer, not allowing busy-ness to crowd out truly hearing from God and being willing to speak the gospel and stand up for truth without compromise. God is still looking for people to “stand in the gap,” and we can’t depend on

“the Greatest Generation” anymore.

Following up on those thoughts in my Sunday quiet time, I turned to another Ezekiel passage, chapter 33, v. 7–8, where God commissions the prophet as “a watchman for the house of Israel,” whose duties were to be aware of impending danger, hear from God, and warn those who needed to turn from their wickedness. By implication, the wicked are so far from God there’s no way they will see and hear for themselves, but the watchman can warn them. At that point, the wicked are on their own; God isn’t happy about punishing them if they reject the warning (v.

11), but the watchman has done his job.

Is it possible ALL the main news channels in America could be saying the SAME THING, without it being the truth?

HOW could that be done?...

Worse than that, WHY would that be done? Of course, if it’s the truth, the next question is … HOW LONG has it been going on?

Is it possible that what we ARE being told about is to distract us from what we are NOT being told about?

Truth does not change. It can be hidden or lies told in place of it,

BEEN THINKIN ABOUT... but it remains the truth. What we believe determines our actions.

In other words, what we believe is not true because we believe it or because we would like it to be true. Rather, we believe the truth because it is true.

If we recognize what we are being told is not reality, it is our business to find out what is. After all, isn’t it OUR lives, OUR children, OUR country and OUR world?!?

The HOW? WHY? And HOW LONG? Answers for the above questions are fairly obvious. Do

a little research to figure them out.

Fortunately, there are good options available! OAN (One America News), Epoch Times out of Hong Kong is a wonderful source, VICTORY channel on Roku, and Newsmax. YouTube has many: Front Page, U.S. Military News and Real America, Nick Fleming to start.

Report card day. As a kid, I dreaded report card day with a passion because I had no interest in my parents knowing how unproductive I was being in class.

The earnings season is very similar to a report card. It is where the companies we invest in tell us how well they’ve been doing for the past three months.

Since this bull market started at the beginning of 2009, the S&P 500 index, which tracks the 500 largest companies on the stock exchange, has beat analysts’ earnings expectations 47 out of 48 quarters

Being vigilant carries the same connotation as the watchman in Ezekiel, staying alert, hearing from God, and praying. Prayer opens doors for sharing the gospel of Christ, either through being more tuned to opportunities ourselves or by supporting others.

While I’m sad to lose my dad, I’m thankful for his faithfulness and prayer. By both my dad’s example and the clear directive in scripture, the baton is passed; the next generations need to step up and take it.

so strong a not very impressive 0.6% rate of return for the quarter.

Analysts at CFRA expect eight out of the 11 sectors of the S&P 500 to have positive earnings, being led by industrials, materials and real estate. The three sectors expected to miss the mark are consumer discretionary, consumer staples and utilities.

Stewed Tomatoes & Rain

I was in Eureka Springs on Thursday night. There are a myriad of adjectives one can apply to Eureka Springs and while I may love them all, Charles Morrow Wilson’s descriptions are likely still the best, noting a time when the town was still called Eureky, a place of “allegedly medicinal waters in the uniquely vertical settlement” that came to be known as the “wealth-and-wonder capitol of the Ozarks.”

Night fell. I wandered into the Basin Park Hotel. The Basin is probably my favorite hotel downtown and it dominates the view, built in 1909, replacing a wooden hotel which burned.

Spectral fire has still been seen in various parts of the new (read, 112 years old to date) hotel and at least once a guest reported seeing a ghost falling through the lobby, presumably an echo of the origi-

nal tragedy.

Through the lobby with its Halloween decorations, up to the second-ish floor. Floor numbers have less meaning in Eureka, it seems. That’s where the hotel’s balcony restaurant and whiskey bar are ensconced, replete with original oil paintings depicting Eureka Springs in all its Edwardian grandeur and a sweeping view of Spring Street.

I stepped out of the stairwell and paused. Open doors and windows let in the hesitant smell of rain, a gentle pull almost like a tide, and from the restaurant kitchen wafted stewed tomatoes.

I assume they were making pasta sauce, but in that moment, I wasn’t in Eureka Springs in 2021 anymore. I was in my mom’s kitchen, a lanky, hopeful, wideeyed teenager, on a dark, warm, summery October night much like this one, as she canned the last of the summer garden.

I shook my head. And turned toward the whiskey bar.

Local nonprofits team up to help prevent falls and reduce arthritis pain

Submitted to Branson Globe Just over 30 percent of Stone County’s population is 65 years of age or older. This is one of the highest older adult populations in Southwest Missouri and almost double the Missouri and national averages. As a result, many area residents are concerned with preventing falls and maintaining

health. The University of Missouri Extension, Stone County OACAC, and the Kimberling Area Senior Center have partnered to provide fall prevention programs starting at the end of October.

Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention (TCAFP) is a safe, effective exercise program that improves health of the mind and

body. The program will be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Kimberling Area Senior Center, starting October 29 (skipping November 24 & 26). TCAFP combines gentle physical exercise and stretching with mindfulness.

Tai Chi exercises the joints, muscles, and internal organs, while simultaneously strengthening the mind, relieving stress and bringing harmony to yourself and others.

Scientific studies have shown Tai Chi to improve health, quality of life and balance. The slow, fluid, and gentle movements improve muscular strength, flexibility and

fitness, as well as relaxation, balance, posture and immunity. Tai Chi is appropriate for individuals with or without arthritis, joint and muscle pain, or elevated risk of falling.

The registration fee of $50 for this 20-session program is due by October 27. Assistance with the cost is available for qualifying individuals through the Goal Getters program of Stone County OACAC; call 417272-0588 for details.

A Matter of Balance (MOB) is a separate program also hosted at the Kimberling Area Senior Center.

This award-winning program teaches participants to change the way they think about falls, make changes

to reduce falls, and exercise to increase strength and balance. Since fear of falling is in itself a risk factor for falling, anyone concerned about falls is encouraged to attend. This program takes place Wednesdays and Fridays, October 27 through November 19, from 9 to 11 a.m. This program is FREE, but registration is required. By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Many Branson residents and members of the entertainment community attended a video release party last week, celebrating the release of Stevie Lee Woods’ new video “Something About the Way You Look Tonight.”

The fantastically produced video

of the Elton John classic, featuring Branson’s own Stevie Lee Woods, will be released worldwide on October 22, but was previewed in Branson by a select group just days before the official release date by an audience of Woods’ friends, fans and peers.

The event not only featured the

first-ever viewing of the video but also live entertainment by Branson’s Male Entertainer of the Year, Stevie Lee Woods, and the reigning Band of the Year, the Nashville Roadhouse Live Band – Mark Boyd, Lyman Clark, Paul Oney, Steven Leach, Rick McEwen and Robbie Springfield.

Springfield, who co-produced the song alongside Elton John’s producers noted, “One of the greatest things that can happen is for someone to put their trust in you, and I thank Stevie Lee for trusting me to put this record together.”

Woods also shared his appreciation for those who made this night possible. Said Woods, “From my heart, thank you so much for being here tonight. To my band and the entire crew, I appreciate you so much and everything you do.”

By Stephanie Barney, Owner, Lightspeed Electrical With the number of older homes and lake cabins in this area, many people wonder about the age of their wiring. A common question that people have is “How long does electrical wiring last?”

Wiring before 1965 was insulated with rubber and cloth insulation, which had a life expectancy of 25-30 years. What happens after that span of time is that the insulative sheath deteriorates, exposing bare wire, which can start a fire. This means that if a house was built before 1965, the wiring system became dangerous in 1995…. which was 25 years ago.

Wiring before 1965 also had a difference in the way it was grounded.

Grounding is a means of protection against electrocution. Updated wiring has a built-in ground wire which connects to devices like outlets and fixtures. A very obvious sign that your home has older wiring would be the presence of two-prong outlets. The third hole in today’s outlets is where the grounding plug enters the device to connect to the protection of grounding.

Another fact that almost no one outside of the electrical trade knows is that wiring has a temperature rating

(translation: how hot it can get). If all the wiring and fixtures are installed at the same time, they would have the same temperature threshold. However, if your house was built in 1982, and you decide to put in a new LED fixture with a higher heat rating, that fixture is allowed to get hotter than the wiring it is attached to.

So, if your home was wired in 1981, remember that your wiring is over 40 years old and should be checked because it may not be as safe or as capable of handling all of your new dryers, stoves, and devices as you think it is. Volunteers needed for VITA program in Taney County Submitted to Branson Globe The University of Missouri Extension is looking for volunteers to provide free tax help for the 2022 tax season (2021 tax year) in Taney County. Become a tax volunteer and make a difference in your community.

Jody LeMaster, Taney County VITA site coordinator, says, “Last year we helped over 1,000 folks in our area with their federal and state taxes. The more volunteers we have, the more people we can serve; the more we can serve, the more likely we will be able to re-

I agree that the recovery is slowing and inflation and worker shortage are becoming worrisome, but I still see a lot of positives. The consumers and businesses seem confident we are getting back to somewhat normal, the economy is

expanding, and earnings are growing even if not as fast as it was.

Earnings growth is still earning growth.

Another positive is that the pandemic made our economy more digital-friendly and that will just make the economy stronger and more adaptable in the future. Virtual meetings have become a part of everyday life which I believe will make companies leaner and more profitable.

Connecting through books and skills

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Last week was bittersweet for this writer with the passing of my dad, a 95-year-old World War II veteran. Going through keepsakes and household items to select mementos for the memorial service display, I realized anew that the man had books. Lots of books.

Times have obviously changed with technology, as it’s possible to access all kinds of reading material electronically, but there’s just something satisfying about a real book. Holding some of the books our parents or grandparents loved to read and re-read gives a connection I’m not sure can be duplicat-

ed. “Wanna look at this stuff on Mom’s iPad before I cancel the subscription?” just doesn’t have the same excitement as “Wow, what a cool old book, and look at this beautiful bookmark.”

My dad enjoyed faith-building stories by early Pentecostal leaders, apologetics by C.S. Lewis and others, and missionary testimonies. I’ve enjoyed browsing through those, plus textbooks he used to study for ministerial credentials. My mom liked classic American literature and in her later years, Christian fiction such as Janette Oke’s prairie stories. In today’s easily-offended culture, these are not only encouraging but provide welcome practicality. If you don’t have any, check out the area library thrift shops and used book sales, an inexpensive way to connect with what people have enjoyed over the years.

Another thing I have found while going through my parents’ stuff is the value placed on sincere, handwritten correspondence—thank-you notes, personal notes inside birthday cards, and newsy letters from relatives who didn’t live close by, back when long-distance calls were limited to three minutes, after 7 p.m. so they would be less expensive.

College of the Ozarks students participate in annual CitizenTrip™ in Washington, D.C., NYC Submitted to Branson Globe College of the Ozarks continued the groundbreaking CitizenTrip™ that began in 2019 as part of their Patriotic Education Program.

Once again, College of the Ozarks sent 150 students on a three-day, two-night intensive trip to Washington, D.C., at no cost to the students, Oct. 4-6. Students also visited New York City and paid homage to those killed in the tragic events of 9/11.

“The College is pleased to take a leadership role in making sure each of our students visits the nation’s capital,” said College President Jerry C. Davis. “Young people do not inherit knowledge of our exceptional country and its foundational principles; these things must be taught. Reading about places is one thing but visiting them is quite another. Friends across America are making it possible for a new generation of young people to understand the sacrifices which have been made for all of us.”

“I am beyond grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity the College has provided students on this trip,” said Tanner Maasen, senior computer information science major. “This is a major testament to our College administrators’ commitment of developing students’ character while helping to ensure students do not incur debt

during their time at the College.”

Sgt. Maj. USMC (Ret.) Eddie Neas joined the students on the trip. While at the national Vietnam Veterans Memorial, he gave the students an account of his time as a machine gunner with the First Marine Division during the Vietnam War. This year’s CitizenTrip™ included stops at Arlington National Cemetery, Museum of the Bible, the White House, the United States Capitol, the National Archives Museum, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Students also visited the National Mall, which includes the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Constitution Gardens, Washington Monument, and World War II Memorial.

During the New York City portion of the trip, students visited the Statue of Liberty National Monument and the 9/11 Memorial Pools.

“These students approach each memorial, monument, and museum with a sense of honor and deep gratitude that gives me pause,” said Paige Ray, associate professor of English. “It’s a posture that I can only describe as reverence — a reverence that acknowledges the complex human experiences captured in America’s historical legacies.”

Students stood in awe of the more than 14,000 graves spread over 639 acres at Arlington National Cemetery. Brigadier General James P. Schreffler, who serves as academic chair of the Division of Business, Applied and Technical Sciences at C of O, illuminated stories of several who have given the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

the fresh graves of the servicemen and women who perished in Kabul moved me deeply. These men and women were around my age and gave the ultimate sacrifice for

my freedom. Arlington ultimately brought me to tears and made me realize how short life can be, more so for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. But despite its brevity, the

While at Arlington, Dr. Marci Linson, vice president for patriotic activities and dean of admissions, spoke to the students about Brigadier General Tommy Bell, graduate of The School of the Ozarks.

Bell is one of the four generals whose life and legacy is described in the book, “The Four Generals of Hard Work U.,” by College President Jerry C. Davis.

“He [Tommy Bell] came from a humble background with limited means and had quite a tumultuous childhood. I hope he serves as an inspiration to you,” Linson said, as she pointed to the plaque bearing his name and marking his remains

in the Arlington Niche Wall. Bell came from the hills of Oklahoma before embarking on a journey that not only included his time at The School of the Ozarks but a stunning military career in the skies over Vietnam and eventually the corridors of power in the Pentagon.

College administrators felt it was important to extend the CitizenTrip™ this year to include a visit to the 9/11 Memorial Pools in New York City.

“When I see each name etched into this memorial, built atop the grave of those lost in 9/11, I contemplate the importance of remembrance,” said junior Paige Steelman. “Col. Karen Hobson, a friend of the College, made this trip to New York City possible for the students. Her sister, Angela Kyte, died in the tragedy. Being able to see and touch the names of those lost is something I’ll never forget.”

Earlier in the day, King met students, staff and faculty from School of the Ozarks and select college students to discuss Christianity in today’s culture and Critical Race Theory. The meeting included a question-and-answer portion, where students asked King relevant questions about engaging Christianity today. King then hosted a session for faculty in The William S. Knight Center for Patriotic Education. Finally, King discussed faith and freedom in an open convocation for C of O students in the Jones Auditorium.

Dr. Sue Head, vice president for cultural affairs and dean of character education, was excited and grateful for King’s return to campus.

“Because of COVID concerns, we had to limit the audience to around 150 students at that time. Soon after, she called to ask if she could come back to campus in October, to which we quickly replied YES!” King encouraged students to engage culture by learning to articulate their own position in a loving way and to use scriptural teachings to inform their discussions.

“Dr. Alveda King exemplifies the

values of faith and freedom, and we were so privileged to have her join us again,” said Andrew Bolger, director of The Keeter Center for Character Education. “Her Spirit-led witness, open stories of forgiveness and transformation, commitment to challenging contemporary issues, and love for all people truly is a witness of a public Christian life for our students and community.”

King’s visit was built on the College’s commitment to teach students about how the founding principles of our nation and the Christian faith empowered significant positive change in our nation’s history.

“Many of the leaders of our nation – both women and men – drew on the deep wells of our founding documents and Scripture to inspire change, abolish slavery, promote women’s right to vote, dismantle Jim Crow, and support the Civil Rights Movement,” Bolger said.

“Without courageous people of faith promoting the ideals of our

founding, we would not be the same nation we are today.”

Embers presents check to Taney County 100 Club

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Embers Cigar Lounge presented a check to the Taney County 100 club on Tuesday night to enable the organization to provide more assistance to families of our area’s fallen first responders.

Embers owners Betsy and Kevin McConnell were on hand to present the nonprofit organization with a check for $5,000.

“What you did for us, for the families of the firemen and the service people, it is beyond words,” said Taney County 100 Club Board member Kirk Elmquist.

Elmquist continued, “I do want

to offer a toast. One of my favorite Irish toasts. There are good ships and there are wood ships and there are ships that sail the sea. But the best ships are friendships. May it always be. Thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts, from the Taney County 100 Club, we appreciate you.”

The donation from Embers, combined with the money received from a fundraiser at this past weekend’s Branson Auction will double the funds in the organization’s bank account, allowing them to provide more needed assistance to families of fallen heroes in the Branson area.

Dr. Lynda Lynn receives ‘Josie Award’ for gospel music

Submitted to Branson Globe Dr. Lynda Lynn and her husband Bud are on the road for Jesus and have just returned from Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, where Lynda received a songwriter nomination for three songs she has written, “Jesus In Me” recorded by Country Gospel Music Association’s Male Vocalist of the Year Wendell Johnson; “I Just Wanna Thank You Lord” recorded by Mark Bradley who performed the role of Jesus in Branson’s award winning stage production of Jesus Christ “The Promise”; and “Since He Touched Me” recorded by Morgan Dale who performed as the master of ceremonies in the Dolly Parton’s Stampede in Branson, Missouri.

The event was the seventh annual Josie Awards held at the Country Tonight Theatre in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, on September 18.

Lynda received the news of her 2021 nominee just before attending the convention. The letter stated “...congratulations...you are a 2021 nominee!” The letter also stated out of 32,000 entries or 2.6% of submissions, Lynda’s songs achieved nomination for Josie Awards in 2021.

Over 120 music awards were presented which included the Lifetime Career Achievement award for country legend and recording artist T. Graham Brown.

The Josie Music Awards is an all genre music award show ceremony which includes a lavish red carpet and many performances. Since its inaugural celebration in 2015, the Josie Music Awards was, is, and remains the largest independent artist award show globally.

Josie Passantino-Boone, who founded the Josie Awards, is a radio show founder/host, segment host, live event host, singer/songwriter, and licensed radio station owner/general manager, Nashville, Tennessee. She is also known as the radio sweetheart and recipient of the Sparkle Award and the award for Most Indie Friendly Radio Show from the Independent Country Music Association.

On Saturday, September 11, Lynda and Bud also attended the 90th Annual Mid-South Gospel Music Convention held this year at the Lair Event Center, Dexter, Missouri. At the event Lynda received a Tina Sadler songwriting award for her song “I’ll Be There” recorded by Randy Brooks who performed the role of Jesus in Branson, Missouri’s, Broadway production of “The Promise.”

Jerry and Sharon have been featured on the Grand Ole Opry stage in Nashville and now travel throughout the country with their gospel music ministry. They perform regularly in Branson, Missouri.

Currently Lynda and Bud are hosting a program where they invite performers to join them for a one-hour gospel television show that airs on Sunday nights at 7 p.m. on the ALG Gospel Network.

These programs also air on WOTG TV, Branson Gospel Television on Monday and Friday nights at 7 p.m. The programs celebrate with gospel song and ministry to reach the world for Jesus Christ.

“As our sustainable housing project, Elevate Community, continues to develop, we’re looking for individuals and organizations to sponsor homes,” Stallings explained. “Providing secure housing meets an essential and fundamental need, re-

duces sub-standard motel living and homelessness, and elevates our entire community.”

Elevate Branson is also working diligently to expand the Elevate Work program to include certifications and apprenticeships.

When asked if he and Amy ever dreamed that Elevate Branson would become as large as it has, Bryan responded, “Absolutely not. I’m not sure if we would have continued if we thought it would get to this. We would not have felt qualified.”

The “Old Blacksmith Shop” painting will draw attention with the eye as one is also surrounded by the sounds and smells of the scene. An opening night reception will be Friday, November 5 from 6-9 p.m., the same evening of Hollister’s First Friday Art Walk, also on Downing Street.

“I want to celebrate who we are in the Ozarks,” Horn shared, “how people carve out a living and express strong values.” Horn cares deeply about the people and community that make the area home: “I want to showcase the people and beauty as a gift to my second family.” Horn is often the one to greet people like family as they enter the SMAC building when she emerges from her working studio with a smile and friendly greeting.

A local artist and advocate for the arts, Horn is a SMAC board member, studio member, and the voice of the SMAC newsletter.

She also blogs with step-by-step guides for artists at https://www. lynnettehorn.com. Her background includes a B.S. in Communications from Maryville University in St. Louis with her work spanning journalism, corporate marketing, and creative writing.

By Kerry Dawn Green This one takes the cake! It’s so delicious, and it comes courtesy of my Texas bestie, Ms. Becky Whitenack. YUM! • 1 pkg. (2-layer size) white or yellow cake mix • 1 pkg. (4-serving size) Jello-O vanilla flavor instant pudding • 1 1/3 cups water • 4 eggs • ¼ cup oil • 1 1/3 cup angel flake coconut • 1 cup chopped nuts Combine cake mix, pudding mix, water, eggs and oil in a large mixer bowl. Blend; beat at medium speed for 4 minutes.

Stir in coconut and nuts. Pour into a greased and floured 10-inch tube pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 60 minutes. Cool.

Coconut Cream Cheese Frosting • 1/3 cup butter • 2 3-oz. pkgs. cream cheese • 1 box confectioners sugar • 2 teaspoons vanilla • 2 cups coconut Cream butter; blend in cream cheese. Add confectioners sugar alternately with milk, beating well. Add vanilla.

Spread frosting over top and sides of cake. Sprinkle coconut over frosting.

Red Cross emergency blood shortage: Donors needed to combat low turnout Submitted to Branson Globe The American Red Cross continues to experience an emergency blood and platelet shortage that has caused the blood supply to drop to the lowest post-summer level in at least six years.

With less than a day’s supply of certain blood types in recent weeks, the Red Cross asks donors of all blood types – es-

pecially type O − to make an appointment to give blood or platelets as soon as possible to ensure patients can receive the lifesaving transfusions they rely on. Appointments can be made by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Fall is typically a time when

the blood supply rebounds from summer blood shortages, but a surge in COVID-19 cases across the U.S. due to the delta variant has contributed to the lowest donor turnout of the year. To shore up inventory, the Red Cross must collect 10,000 additional blood products each week this month to meet hospital and patient needs.

Hollister crossing guard helping students walk to school safely Submitted to Branson Globe If you travel from one side of Taney County to the other during your morning or afternoon commute, you are likely to use Highway BB and are likely to encounter additional traffic around the area of the Hollister School campus.

As a part of a ballot issue passed in April, the Hollister School District added additional turning and traffic lanes on their campus to help alleviate some of this traffic as well as

adding new sidewalks to allow students to safely walk from Highway BB to the farthest end of campus.

But what happens when those students try to cross Highway BB in the midst of all that traffic?

Seeing a need for additional safety, the Hollister R-V School District made the decision to hire a crossing guard. Rose Wilcox joined the Hollister team last week and can now be seen at the crosswalk on Highway BB at the main

school entrance 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after school each day to help ensure the safety of students as they cross the highway.

Assistant Superintendent of District Operations, Dr. Sean Woods says, “Our goal is to not stop traffic unless absolutely necessary but to instead hold students in a group until it is clear to cross.

While the safety of our students is our number one priority, we also want to be mindful of our commu-

nity members who are commuting along Highway BB.” The district wishes to remind students and parents that if a student needs to cross Highway BB

walking to school or walking home they should use the crosswalk at the main entrance of campus and allow the crossing guard to escort them safely across.

Oct. 22 is Buckle Up Phone Down Day in Missouri Submitted to Branson Globe Gov. Mike Parson has proclaimed Oct. 22 as Buckle Up Phone Down Day in Missouri in an effort to encourage Missourians to take two simple actions to save lives on the state’s highways – fasten their seat belts and put their phones down while driving.

For the fifth straight year, the Missouri Department of Transportation and the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety, along with safety partners throughout the state, will mark Buckle Up Phone Down Day to encourage better driving behaviors.

Since the program began in 2017, the BUPD initiative has spread steadily across Missouri and into more than a dozen other states. More than 14,000 individuals and businesses have accepted the BUPD challenge, and several other states are actively sharing the messages along their highways.

“Keeping momentum behind this challenge will help us reinforce the two easiest and most effective ways to stay safe and save lives on our highways,” said Robert Brinkmann, chairman of the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety Executive Committee. “I encourage everyone to take today as an opportunity to make these actions a part of your routine every day and challenge your loved ones to do the same.”

Missouri’s 2021 Seat Belt Usage Survey showed 88% of vehicle oc-

cupants use a seat belt, matching the highest rate the state has ever recorded. But the unbuckled 12% make up a majority of the state’s roadway fatalities, which spiked in 2020 despite a decrease in traffic volume. More than two-thirds of the drivers and passengers killed in traffic crashes last year were not wearing a seat belt.

“The simple act of buckling up has proven time and time again to be a person’s single greatest line of defense in a crash,” said MoDOT State Highway Safety and Traffic Engineer Nicole Hood. “It only

takes a few seconds to make these two simple choices with life-saving results: Buckle up, and if you’re driving, put the phone down.”

Cellphone use continues to be one of the most concerning behaviors for all roadway users. In 2020, nearly 60% of the distracted driving fatalities in Missouri claimed the life of someone besides the distracted driver.

Missourians can accept the challenge to BUPD at modot.org/bupd and spread the word on social media using the hashtags #BUPD and #BUPDDay.
