By KD Michaels, Staff Writer Veterans come from across the nation to celebrate Veterans Week in Branson. Known as a city that honors and salutes our Veterans throughout the year, Branson adds a variety of events to celebrate Veterans from all branches of military service from November 5 - 11 each year. Below is a list of Veterans Week events.

November 5 - 11, Daily -- Veterans Village, located at Ballparks of America,Buildings 2 and 3, 1000 Pat Nash Drive. The Day Room is open from 9 am to 4 pm daily, and a Mess Hall Lunch is free to Veterans and only $6 for guests, daily from 11:30 to 1:30.

November 5 - 11, Daily -- Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, located at the Welk Resort, US Highway 165, this is open to the public. A half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Nearly230 feet long and lists more than 58,000 names of the fallen heroes of

the Vietnam Conflict.

November 5, 10 am -- Opening Ceremony for the Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall at the Welk Resort, presented by the Branson Veterans of America 913.

Guest Speaker is Brian Seitz, State Representative and a veteran of the US Army.

November 5, 2 pm -- Vets for Vets Show, at the Branson Star Theater, 3750 West 76 Country Boulevard.

This is a USO-style production, featuring a number of entertainers -- both veterans and active-duty military personnel. Free admission for veterans and their spouses.

You can ‘be a hope giver:’ Salvation Army kicks off 2021 season of giving

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Shoppers at Branson’s Hobby Lobby on Friday, October 29, were greeted by a familiar sight and sound, as the Salvation Army opened its 2021 season of giving through its red kettles, staffed by volunteer bell ringers at locations throughout communities to encourage generosity toward the less fortunate.

The Branson Brass Band, made up of former Salvation Army staff and volunteers, provided holiday music, and local Corps Administrator Steve Roberson greeted those gathered for the kickoff ceremony with this year’s theme, “Hope Marches On.” Roberson reminded attendees that the

COVID-19 pandemic has created new challenges, particularly for people living in Branson’s extended-stay motels, and “unity of community” will be needed to proactively address those problems. “Even as Branson kicks off its Ozark Mountain Christmas season, we need to gather around

the issues of homelessness and poverty,” he said.

In addition to local envoys Steve and Lisa Roberson, Lt. Col. Bob Webster, Divisional Commander of the Central Territory Salvation Army, was there with his wife, Collette, to bring greetings and encouragement. He reminded the

group that this year’s needs are greater than ever, as people grow weary of the national crisis. Some have pulled back on their giving or have less to give, so it’s crucial that we all do what we can toward this year’s new kettle goal of $90,000 for community needs.

Santa Claus was also on hand

for an early Christmas greeting, ringing the bell and reminding people of the needs and the reason for the season.

City offers new tool to see new businesses and projects in Branson

Submitted to Branson Globe The City of Branson is rolling out a new online tool for residents and community members called Building Branson – Commercial and Residential Growth, an interactive application to show what new businesses and multi-family projects are being worked on in Branson.

This information has always been available to the public, but due to high demand and interest, the City wanted to put it together in one place and in an easy-to-use application. The new tool can be found on the homepage of the City’s website, BransonMo.Gov and by clicking on the blue tab labeled “Building Branson – Commercial and Residential Growth.”

Once you have clicked on Building Branson, the information is provided in a clear and user-friendly manner. Along with basic directions for how to navigate the tool, there are four tabs for multi-family and commercial

permits which are both in review and have been issued permits or are currently under construction. Overall, the tool provides all of this information using simple graphics within an overall city location map, but users also have the opportunity to dive deeper into each permitted project for more information if desired.

“We are always looking for ways to present public information in a

more user-friendly and transparent manner. Following the City’s implementation of Citizenserve almost two years ago, information pertaining to building permits and developments is now entirely electronic. This new tool is a creative and technologically savvy use of our Geographic Information Systems (GIS) that will benefit our citizens, developers and other

community members by providing a central location for some of the most requested information from our Department,” said Planning & Development Director, Joel Hornickel.

Building Branson is updated and changed on a regular basis to provide the most accurate and current status of the projects within. Users are encouraged to check it often.

Planning and development director resigns for private sector Submitted to Branson Globe After 12 years with the City of Branson, Planning & Development Director, Joel Hornickel, has announced his resignation in order to pursue an exciting opportunity in the private sector.

Hornickel started with the City in 2009 as Senior Planner where he assisted with the creation of the Community Plan 2030, the City’s first true comprehensive plan. In 2014 Hornickel was promoted to Director of Planning & Development where he implemented several actions from the Community Plan 2030, including the update and modernization of all development related codes, managed the unveiling of the City’s online portal CitizenServe – to improve the efficiency of the city’s development process, and oversaw $524.3 million in construction investment into the community.

While those few highlights speak for themselves, Hornickel’s contributions to the City of Branson are too numerous to list out. His improvements and accomplishments will leave a positive impact on our community for generations to come.

“I have appreciated the oppor-

tunity to serve the citizens, visitors and other stakeholders of the community. It has been exciting to see Branson’s growth and progress over the past decade,” Hornickel said.

Hornickel’s last day at the City of Branson will be December 7, 2021; however, the City will begin immediately on performing a nation-wide search to find a qualified successor. Planner, Jacob Phillips will lead the department on an interim basis until the position is filled.

Center for her periodic therapeutic phlebotomy evaluation, had been canceled. She was told that it would be rescheduled in Springfield, and someone would be contacting her to set up an appointment.

Not hearing anything as of October 25, her care provider* went to the Cox Branson Cancer Center to find out what to do. A woman at the counter took the patient’s information and said she would pass it on. The care provider also went over to the administrative offices and provided the same information to a woman who typed in a “form” and said she would send it to risk management.

Hearing nothing by 10:00 the next day, the caregiver returned to the Cancer Center and talked with [a Cancer Center spokesperson]. They apologized for the situation and inconvenience, indicated this was not the only case, took the information again, and said he would do what he could.

When asked what a person who might need a phlebotomy while all this delay is going on could do, he said they could go to urgent care of the emergency room if problems developed.

I am aware that there is no doctor, but is there anyone I can talk to who can explain how many patients are having to transfer from Cox Branson to Springfield?

By Tiffany Brown, Staff Writer A tool that God used to counsel me in learning to trust Him more was The Disney movie, “Finding Nemo.” It was one of my kids’ favorite movies and they watched it over and over again. While their minds were entertained by the colorful animation and silly punchlines, my mind was being renewed with the joy of the Lord.

The story goes that Marlin, a small clownfish, loses his wife and baby eggs to a larger fish who makes them his meal.

All that is left is one little egg.

It survives the attack and the

baby eventually emerges with a “gimpy” fin. Marlin gives him the name, Nemo. Consumed by the need to hold onto the only thing he had left, Marlin’s one ambition to protect Nemo from danger becomes his obsession.

Nemo is a tiny fish with big dreams, but Marlin keeps him safe inside the anemone they call their home, even prohibiting him to attend “school” with the other youngsters who lived in the reef. But Nemo is relentless.

His want for adventure eventually draws him out into the open ocean. He quickly becomes lost and can’t find his way home.

Marlin is of course devastated that Nemo is gone, and he sets out on a pursuit to find him. He blames himself, wishing he had done more to protect his son from the unknown. But Nemo had an enormously strong will about him. Nothing, not even his dad, could have kept him from seeking adventure in the sea.

During his quest, Marlin meets a happy-go-lucky fish with short-term memory loss named Dori. She is determined to help him find his son, much SEE TIFFANY’S, PAGE 8

Reflections: The gospel is not chained

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer This week, I’ve been thinking— regretfully—about times I allowed circumstances to keep me from sharing my faith in Christ.

In Colossians chapter 4, the Apostle Paul admonishes the Colossian believers, “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains, that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time” (v. 3–5).

Paul wrote those words from prison, likely chained to a guard or chained to the wall with a guard posted to make sure he stayed that way. Yet he asked for prayer that doors would be opened for him—

not necessarily to get out of his circumstances, but to share Christ in spite of them. Even in chains, he was concerned for those “on the outside.” While physically imprisoned, he was concerned for those outside of relationship with God, imprisoned by not having heard and accepted the gospel.

That makes some of my excuses seem rather pathetic. The person might be offended? Well, at least for the time being in this country, they won’t put me in jail. I’m not feeling well? How about a note or phone call? Restrictions due to the pandemic? If you can use social media, you can speak up for Christ.

The Apostle Paul isn’t the only source of inspiration. My dad set a great example. Even as his body became increasingly frail, he prayed with his caregivers and

prayed for needs of family and friends from a large-print list I prepared for him. For over 50 years, Dad suffered from dystonia, with almost constant pain in his neck muscles, but he didn’t let that stop him from earning ministerial credentials and conducting successful jail ministry while also holding a full-time job and regularly witnessing to coworkers. My mother-in-law suffered from cancer for several years before passing away at age 62, but during some of her toughest days, she led her nextdoor neighbors to Christ. Dave Roever is a popular speaker and evangelist in spite of physical limitations from injuries he suffered in Vietnam.

Bonfires lit the hills, disguises worn to confuse the dark and wandering things of the underworld, the “unseelie fairies” of Irish folklore.

Tonight is a time stories, of the dullahan (a headless rider astride a black horse), the kel-

pie or Cefful Dwr (a dark underworld horse of water and stream which waits to drown and eat its victims) and even the jack-o’-lantern (originally a turnip before the tradition made its way across the Atlantic and found form in the Native American pumpkin).

Irish, Welsh and Scottish immigrants brought their tales into these old rugged hills and it was here those tales took root. Here, in the Ozarks it was a harsh life in which death was a regular visitor and that made way for rich and powerful lore — part protection against the darkness, part catharsis in face of powers far beyond control.

And even today, with our sanitized, computer-controlled, gasoline-fueled world, All Hallows Eve is a reminder of life’s fragility before the dark unknown.

Of all my mom’s stories, her scary stories were my favorites but, as a child, I never really thought of growing up and creating stories of my own.

However, after one particularly arduous day amidst the surging crowds of War Eagle Fair back in 2009, I lay awake in my bed, suddenly unable to get a particular kind of story out of my head.

The tale wouldn’t leave and so I wrote it down.

That story was “James’ Footprints” and it was imbued with just enough real-life to give me chills. You can read it this week on StateoftheOzarks Facebook page or on the online magazine Stateoftheozarks.net. I’ll let you decide which parts are real and which parts are fiction.

Also, I think you should read it in the dark, just as the clock begins to chime midnight.

With little Christian fellowship except through satellite ministry, they grow in their faith, and many eventually win their families by their changed lives. Jesus is revealing himself to Muslims through visions and dreams, just as he revealed himself to Paul. The Voice of the Martyrs, China Aid, and other groups share miraculous stories of bold believers sharing the gospel with their persecutors.

In spite of attempts to silence the gospel through the centuries, the word of God is not in chains. This Sunday, November 7, has been designated by several organizations as the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. Take time

to pray for these courageous Christians and also be inspired by them.

Circumstances must not keep us from sharing the gospel with those who desperately need to hear it.

to his apprehension. Marlin and Dori run into many obstacles along their way, including sharks, jellyfish and hungry seagulls. Meanwhile, the only thing Marlin has to go by is Dori’s questionable navigational skills and foggy memory of an address in Sidney, Australia, where they believe Nemo might have been taken.

By Dori’s prodding, Marlin is unwillingly forced to trust a variety of ocean creatures who offer to help them in their search.

One such creature was a killer whale incited by Dori’s supposed ability to “speak whale.”

Marlin is sure that this is a trap and that the whale is only interested in making them his lunch.

Sure enough, Dori and Marlin end up in the whale’s gargantuan stomach. This is the last straw for Marlin. Stripped of hope, he resigns himself to the fact that he’d meet his end as the whale’s meal. Meanwhile, Dori splashes around happily amongst the whale’s stomach contents.

Marlin is instantly awakened from his despair by the whale’s deeply booming voice telling them to swim to the back of his throat, according to Dori.

Dori pleads with Marlin to trust that the whale is trying to help them. As the roaring water drains from the enormous mouth, Marlin holds on tightly.

“He says it’s time to let go!”

Dori screams.

“How do you know something bad isn’t going to happen?”

“I don’t!”

At the whale’s thunderous command, Dori free falls into the darkness. Marlin realizes he has no other choice but to do the same. As he plummets into the crashing water, he is suddenly thrusted out of the whale’s blow hole with tremendous force. He and Dori are cast slapping violently to the ocean’s surface.

Then the waters grow still. In the distance he sees his destination. The place where later that day he would find his son alive and safe.

Had Marlin never learned the art of trust and letting go from his friend, Dori, he would have lost his son and his life forever. Through peril and despair, Marlin came to understand that sometimes, there is redemption in the act of completely letting go of what feels safe and familiar. College of the Ozarks to host beef production sale on campus

The College of the Ozarks Agricultural Department will hold their Registered Hereford Production Sale on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27, AT 12 P.M. in the sale barn on the C of O campus.

A complementary meal will be served at 11 a.m. in the Youngman Ag Dome.

The auction will feature purebred Hereford cattle: bulls, bred heifers, cow/calf pairs, open heif-

“Our cattle have been selected for meat quality, growth, fertility and the ability to raise calves on fescue hills of the Ozarks,” Holder said. “We take pride in taking the finest care of our animals, and we are excited to sell animals from our herd.”

The students enrolled in the Livestock Merchandising class will be helping with the auction.

The students do everything from picking out the cattle to helping develop advertisements, savethe-date cards, picturing the cattle for the catalog, and producing the catalog.

“Our goal at the beef farm is to teach students how to raise registered and commercial beef cattle,” Holder said. “Our cattle are sold as purebred Hereford replacement females and herd bulls, or as butchered beef. We treat the farm as an extension of our classroom, where students can gain hands-on experience to back up what they are learning in the classroom. The students have experience with artificial insemination, calving out cows, feeding, vaccinating cattle, handling and working cattle, feeding steers out in the feedlot, ultrasounding pregnant cows, ultrasounding for meat quality, harvesting steers, processing and packaging meat.”

The Flagstore celebrates milestone anniversary during Veterans Week

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer As Branson, Missouri celebrates Veterans Week, a longtime Branson store celebrates a milestone anniversary. This year marks the 40th year of business for The Flagstore, a popular shopping experience for locals and visitors alike.

Chris and Michelle Cartwright are the owners of the unique business. The Cartwright Family purchased The Flagstore, located in downtown Branson, in 2019. The couple, along with daughter, Kaci, handles the store’s dayto-day operations.

For Chris, who served nearly 30 years in the military, and Michelle, who was a stay-athome mom, the Flagstore is a perfect fit.

“We are the third owners of The Flagstore,” said Michelle.

“Both sets of previous owners worked until they retired and dedicated themselves to the store, as well.”

Best known for their wide selection of American flags, the Flagstore offers a variety of top-quality items.

Said Michelle, “We sell FMAA certified American, state, military, country, historical and Christian flags.

FMAA stands for Flag Makers Association of America. It means the flag was made here in the USA with domestic re-

sources. We also have a large selection of garden flags for all seasons. We have flagpoles and flagpole parts. One of the most popular items, beside the three-foot-by-five foot U.S. nylon flag, is a matching garden flag and panel flag that say ‘God and Country,’ displaying the U.S. flag background colors with a bible, cross and the Declaration of Independence.”

The Cartwright family loves owning a store in a town that celebrates the values that they hold dear – the love of God, family and country.

“We love being in Branson,” noted Michelle. “We have lived all over the U.S., while being a United States Coast Guard family. There is no other place we would rather be.

Business is picking up. We are struggling, like so many other businesses, getting merchandise in stock. We do our best to locate and find items that our customers are searching for.”

Cartwright continued, “It has been a wonderful experience getting to know our customers.

We have owned the store long enough to see repeat customers. We know many by name.

It’s a great feeling to start feeling like part of this community that we love so much!”

Reader’s Corner: Take a run in ‘Insanity’s Shoes’

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Thank you to local author Angela Tompkins for providing a review copy of her book, “Insanity’s Shoes: My Running Trip Through Postpartum Psy-

chosis.”

What could cause a mother of two beautiful kids to flee her comfortable home, convinced she must escape an abusive husband and everyone

in cahoots with him, clutching her newborn son and dashing through a neighbor’s home to steal a pair of running shoes?

If you picked up on the word “newborn,” and wondered if

postpartum instability had anything to do with it, you’d be right; but I’m betting you didn’t. Many people are blissfully unaware of postpartum depression and its even scarier sibling, postpartum psychosis.

Others, like this reviewer, experienced post-partum issues but were given painfully inadequate resources by the professionals supposedly caring for them. For their sakes, we hope this review increases awareness and helps other moms.

Angela Tompkins’ husband, Wayne, was not (and is not) abusive. He wasn’t homosexual, out to harm her, or any of the other things her mind had convinced her he was; rather, he was a chiropractor working hard to support his family.

Angela helped in the business, and since her first pregnancy and their daughter’s birth had been relatively uneventful, she had no reason to suspect their son’s birth would be otherwise—until it was.

The book details some warning signs leading up to Angela’s wild flight and her thoughts that crazy day. For an English teacher, it was tempting to grab a red pen and start marking the book’s rather choppy writing style, but it mirrors the

author’s spinning brain. Fortunately, the adventure ended with her safely apprehended and the baby unhurt. She was admitted to the psychiatric ward of a Springfield hospital for a two-week stay, although her healing journey took much longer.

The book tackles tough but necessary topics: Her exhausted husband’s take on it all. The importance of scripture and the family’s faith, including the unfortunate tendency of many churches to dismiss mental illness as something preventable for good Christians with enough faith. The medications to stabilize her brain chemistry—and the need for careful monitoring of side effects.

What it’s like inside a psych ward. And how she rebuilt relationships with her frightened toddler and innocent newborn.

In Angela’s case, the story ends well, with her healing and the family’s restoration, for which she gives immense credit to God, her husband’s patience and hard work, and family and friends who came to help even though they didn’t understand. The couple now work together at Tompkins Wellness Center in Hollister, Missouri, where they combine Dr. Wayne’s chiropractic skills with a total-person approach to care. Writing the book itself played an important part in Angela’s healing, and she hopes it helps other mothers cope with the very real effects of postpartum depression and psychosis.

Singer, actor John Schneider to perform and race in Springfield

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Actor and country music star John Schneider is performing in the Ozarks this weekend. No stranger to the area, Schneider has performed many times in Branson. This weekend Schneider, star of the ever-popular “Dukes of Hazzard” is bringing his “Bo’s on the Road Extravaganza” to the Springfield Raceway this Saturday. Presented by Bad Boy

Mowers, Schneider calls this his “Let’s Get Dirty” Festival.

Schneider performs in concert with country artists Keith Burns of Trick Pony and Cody McCarver of Confederate Railroad, along with his own Stars and Stripes Band, beginning at 2 p.m.

A lover of fast cars, Schneider and his wife, Alicia, plan to race their modified cars on the Springfield

Raceway track. In a press release from Springfield Raceway, Schneider said, “I have heard great things with Springfield Raceway being a multi-groove, fast quarter mile track, and can’t wait to get to Springfield Raceway. Springfield is in the heart of the Ozarks, with Branson being only 45 minutes away.”

Schneider added that this will be just his fifth race in the car he is planning to bring to Springfield. His goals for Saturday are to finish the race and to finish ahead of his wife, Alicia.

Another highlight of the day’s event will be Schneider, who has been deemed “a Great American Patriot” as he speaks the words of the National Anthem.

day night at the Mickey Gilley Grand Shanghai Theatre to raise money for two worthy organizations.

The Halloween night performance raised funds for the Taney County Animal Control and the Shepherd of the Hills Humane Society.

The Sunday night performance featured Gilley singing many of his popular and award-winning songs to an enthusiastic crowd. Also featured was Gilley’s friend and fellow country music great Johnny Lee, another Branson favorite.

sionist Mike Walker also took the stage, performing some Conway Twitty numbers.

The event exceeded Gilley’s expectations, according to theater manager Cindy Thomas. Gilley was hoping to raise $4,000 to $5,000 to aid the two organizations.

“Mickey Gilley exceeded his goal for the benefit,” said Thomas. “He looks forward to having another benefit next year.”

Popular display ‘Lights of Joy’ is now open for season

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer A popular Branson Christmas attraction, Lights of Joy, is now open for the holiday season.

The one-and-a-half mile drivethrough is all new for the 2021 season with all new lights and displays.

Lights of Joy offered a preview of their lights on Saturday night, prior to opening, and also hosted a 5K Run-Walk to raise money for KLife Christian Ministry.

The 5K event was a success, according to Lights of Joy Manager Steve Hager, and might become an annual event.

Said Hager, “It was a successful first year. We had about 48 timed runners and some that participated for fun. Several people ran or walked in Halloween costumes, and a couple dressed in the spirit of Christmas. All of the

The following statement from Cox Branson President, William Mahoney, appearing to be devoid of answers to the questions asked, was received on November 1: In recent weeks, CoxHealth Cancer Center Branson has experienced some temporary changes as one of its medical oncologists, Dr. Gus Gonzales, decided to move out of the area to be closer to family.

Given that this change temporarily affected capacity at the Branson center, staff immediately began planning to transition care for all impacted patients to

ensure there were no interruptions in treatment. Medical Oncology patients were transitioned to CoxHealth’s cancer center in Springfield, or other sites outside the system if they wished to remain in Branson. Oncology and Hematology patients who are not in active treatment are also being referred to other providers for the time being.

It is expected that a medical oncologist will be seeing patients again at CoxHealth Cancer Center Branson before the end of the year. At that time, patients may transition back to Branson or remain where they are currently receiving care.

Explore the Power of STEM at WonderWorks Branson with its fall educational programs Submitted to Branson Globe WonderWorks Branson is hosting several educational programs this fall to celebrate STEM and honor local artists. The family attraction will be celebrating National STEM Day on Monday, November 8, 2021, by conducting science labs throughout the building all day. This semester, it is also hosting its third-annual youth art contest in which the local artists will have their artwork on display at WonderWorks in the OZART: Missouri & Arkansas Young Artists Gallery. Artwork submissions are being accepted now through December 15, 2021.

Song written several years ago still powerful for local resident

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer A local resident is touching thousands with a song she wrote.

Rose Wilcox, a resident of the Branson area penned a song entitled “Freedom and Liberty,” a moving selection about our nation’s flag and the freedom it represents. Wilcox wrote “Freedom and Liberty” in 2011 while working in Dallas, Texas.

Last year, Wilcox debuted the song in the Branson area during Veterans Week and this year was privileged to perform “Freedom and Liberty” at local events marking the 20th anniversary of 9/11, as well as honoring the 13 fallen soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan.

Local musician and producer Robbie Springfield recently produced Wilcox’s recording of the song. Popular Branson vocalists Jackie Brown and Melody Hart served as backup singers.

Dylan Goebel: Thankful for a supportive community

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Dylan Goebel of Hollister wasn’t supposed to be able to do much.

After a seizure during birth left him turning blue and fighting for life, his mom, Kristy, was told he would need special education and be limited in his abilities.

Dylan, however, has other ideas about limitations. A sports lover, he has set goals and credits the community, particularly Hollister schools, with helping him accomplish them.

Since graduating from Hollister High School in 2021, he holds a fulltime job and continues to work toward additional plans for the future.

Physical challenges made Dylan unable to play football, but when

his younger brother Tyler started Mighty Mites, Dylan wanted to be involved. After a Facebook post by his mom raised awareness of his dreams, he was invited to become a team manager. He has served as manager for Hollister teams for six years in football and also assisted with basketball, track and the school band program. Several parents remarked that he has a special knack for encouraging athletes to “Get out there and be a Tiger!” Coach Mike Johnson said, “Dylan brings a positive energy every time he comes to the field.” He continues to help with the football team where Tyler is currently a senior, #14, and another brother, Ashton, also plays.

He’s also excited about the band’s upcoming trip to Bands of America national competition, having helped with band trips, been in color guard, and played low brass instruments during high school.

Dylan’s list of people to thank is a long one, including coaches Wenger and Johnson, board members, and administrators—Dr. Woods, Dr. Terry, Ms. Leech, Mr. Leighty, and others. Those people say the feeling is mutual as Dylan’s work ethic and attitude have left an impact. “When I was elementary principal, he had a smile for everyone, and a positive, encouraging attitude,” said assistant superintendent Sandy Leech. “Any time I spoke with Dylan, it brightened my day!”

Dylan found the regular Tiger Talks inspirational, particularly the “empathy paradigm” of communication and relationships shared by former State Trooper Jamison.

Having experienced occasional bullying over the years, he said the talks helped him turn the situation around and encourage others. “If you’re going through a hard time, find a way to walk away from it and think about something more positive,” he says. down, he is a breath of fresh air.”

Dylan’s dream of playing sports himself did come true during the 2019-20 school year, as he helped organize and played on Hollister’s Designer Genes basketball team for special education students. He appreciates Hollister special education staff making that opportunity happen. Special education teacher and administrator Kristina Smith has known Dylan for 10 years and said he worked hard to make the program a success. “By learning to advocate for things he believes in, Dylan has helped grow Designer Genes Basketball for Hollister students and surrounding communities to showcase their passion for basketball,” she said. “He is a great example of bringing people together.”

Dylan has also played basketball through Springfield’s Champion Athletes of the Ozarks. “I can’t play football, but I’m really happy I can play basketball,” he says.

Senior night at the last 2020 home football game was some-

thing he will always remember, though, as coaches had the popular manager/trainer don full pads and carry the flag onto the field.

Dylan is not finished setting goals. He works at Country Mart in Hollister and, while he has had some challenges related to learning disabilities, people have been patient with him as he learns. He continues to volunteer as a Hollister football manager, attends New Beginnings Fellowship in Hollister, and enjoys arcade games. He also plays guitar.

In the future Dylan hopes to raise awareness for other nonprofits and volunteer for Big Brothers. Since his dad doesn’t live nearby, he knows the importance of men stepping in to fill the gap, as school staff have done for him.

“Mostly, I really just want other schools to know Special Ed kids can do lots of things,” says Dylan. “Treat them like you treat anyone else.”

Hollister’s fourth annual Christmas tree lighting kicks off ‘A Downing Street Christmas’

By Gary J. Groman, Independent Journalist A significant event in the City of Hollister’s celebration of Christmas, “A Downing Street Christmas,” begins tonight, November 5, 2021, with the fourth annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

The ceremony runs from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. at the Pedestrian Mall, located between Hook & Ladder Pizza and the All Teased Up Salon.

The public is invited to join Downing Street merchants, Hollister’s Park Board, and others for the official tree lighting ceremony.

A very special guest, Santa Claus, will light the tree.

“High school and middle school choirs will provide carols and storytelling with State of the Ozarks, as onlookers enjoy refreshments from Vintage Paris and the Country Mart Bakery. After the celebration, stroll through Downing Street for the First Friday Art Walk.”

Alice Yeager, the administrative assistant for the Hollister Chamber of Commerce, said that the beautiful Christmas tree is just part of A Downing Street Christmas. Yeager points out that Downing Street itself will be decorated. The decorations of the individual Downing Street businesses and the city of Hollister’s lighting displays along the train tracks will be aglow with the lights of Christmas. “Just strolling down the street amid the

lights, looking at the decorations, visiting with merchants, and going in and out of the shops creates a special Christmas atmosphere,” she said.

Although not an “official part of A Downing Street Christmas, an annual event that all anticipate is the “Santa Train.” It’s typically held in the Hollister Train Station with Santa arriving by train.

Yeager said that because of federal regulations, Santa will not be arriving by train this year. The Santa Train event will be a “walk through” activity held at the Chad Fuqua Park, adjacent to the Hollister City Hall, on December 5 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

She said that there are still some

things in the works, so there might be some surprises. Right now, there will be stations with free popcorn, free cookies and drinks.

We will have a hot chocolate station this year. Although the final program has not been completed, there will be live entertainment on the park’s stage and other fun activities.

The fifth annual Festival of Trees is underway at the Branson Landing to raise money for Christian Action Ministries,

Festival of Trees is a monthlong celebration of the holiday season. The Christmas tree and decor exhibition and sale gives Branson residents and visitors the opportunity to view – and purchase – a variety of creatively decorated treats and decor, sponsored by area businesses, churches, civic groups and individuals. The trees are sold fully decorated and range

from $100 to nearly $2,000.

This year’s event features trees sponsored by Titanic, Branson Chick-fil-A, Keeter Center, Bass Pro Shop, Ozarks DynaCom, Faith Community Church, House of Hope and many other businesses and organizations. A highlight of the festival is a tree sponsored by the Branson Centennial Museum. The 8-foot “Be the Light” tree is adorned with over 1,000 glass crystals that were part

of an exquisite chandelier that hung in the famous Grand Palace in Branson for nearly 30 years.

In addition to the trees, some of the biggest sellers are wooden sleds, decorative wooden trees, stockings, tree skirts, plaques, and other holiday decor.

Larry Johnson, who has been a member of the CAM board for more than 20 years has been instrumental in acquiring many of the items that have been decorated and are now for sale, such as sleds and wagons.

“I acquire the sleds and wagons and fix them if needed,” said Johnson. “The sleds come from all over, and some date back to the 1920s. No two sleds are the same. It was a blessing to do this because we know where the funds are going.”

Johnson is also responsible for the many wooden plaques and wooden trees on display.

• OZART: Missouri & Arkansas Young Artist Gallery – WonderWorks encourages young artists to explore the opportunities of STEAM with its OZART youth art contest, which encourages local artists to flex their creative side. This year’s theme is “Imagination.” Ten to 15 artists will be selected to have their artwork on display in the gallery in WonderWorks. The winners will also receive four admission tickets each to see their artwork on display. Applicants must apply online, and submissions are being accepted now through December 15, 2021. All of the money raised from Festival of Trees directly impacts thousands of Taney County residents. The money is used to provide and distribute food for those experiencing hardship. Last year, CAM distributed approximately two million pounds of food to those in need in Branson and surrounding Taney County communities.

CAM puts the funds to great use, purchasing necessary food items for those in need. CAM state-wide education standards, students will embark on a field trip they’ll never forget. “This is a great fundraiser for us,” said Betty McKenzie, Director of Operations for Christian Action Ministries, as well as 2021 Chairman for Festival of Trees. “We have 58 sponsors and about 70 trees this year. It’s worth it just coming in here and seeing the beauty.”

Festival of Trees is located in Suite 1105 at the Branson Landing, in the former Christopher & Banks location, across from Kirkland’s. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Festival of Trees runs through November 28.
