Sunrise ceremony at college honors nation’s fallen heroes

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer A student-led sunrise ceremony honored our nation’s veterans on the campus of College of the Ozarks on Thursday. On a chilly Veterans Day morning, many gathered in front of the Alumni Veterans Memorial to pay tribute to those who served our country, particularly those who had attended College of the Ozarks. The ceremony was opened with raising the colors and the sounding of the bugle. Emily Phillips, a junior at College of the Ozarks and an education major shared some inspirational words with the audience. “The difficult decision to serve was made for our freedom,” said

Phillips. “We must take time to recognize where our freedom comes from. Today we honor those who stood up for freedom and answered the call to serve.” Dr. Jerry Davis, college president, assisted two students in a wreath laying ceremony, as the trio placed a large memorial wreath in front of the Alumni Veterans Memorial wall, a way to honor those students who chose to serve their country and those who gave their lives for our freedom. The students, staff and visitors observed one minute of silent reflection, in honor of our fallen heroes. The ceremony ended with a rifle volley, a bugle rendition of “Taps” and a closing prayer.
