Board: Santa will not be delivering downtown parking meters for Christmas

Bob Dole’s 1996 visit to the Tri-Lakes remembered

By KAREN HALFPOP, Digital/ Production Director When Republican statesman Bob Dole passed away December 5 at the age of 98, many residents of the Tri-Lakes, including Jim Babcock of the Branson Centennial Museum, remember when Candidate Dole

visited our area in 1996.

In June, 1996, Dole had just resigned his senate seat in favor of a presidential run against Democrat Bill Clinton. His trip to Branson provided an opportunity to meet and greet thousands of people from all over the nation.

Besides a late-night rally at Lodge of the Ozarks, Dole, along with wife Elizabeth, enjoyed shows at the Glen Campbell and Mel Tillis theatres, and received the key to the city from Branson Mayor Lou Schaefer.

“Our hearts go out to the individuals and communities impacted across Missouri and Arkansas,” said Chris Harmon, Regional Disaster Officer. “We have been working to determine specific needs and will continue to work closely with local officials today.”

This was done to support Branson Mayor Larry Milton’s Official Declaration and the City of Branson Board of Aldermen Resolution stating “that the entire Branson community is encouraged to support Ozark Mountain Christmas in every way they can.”

The OMC committee has created a marketing campaign focused on asking existing visitors throughout the year to

A centerpiece of the new marketing campaign has been updating the OMC logo used. The updated OMC logo is free to use. Many Branson publications are already using the new logo

such as shelter, food and clothing; providing mental health and spiritual care assistance; and supporting emergency responders in their rescue efforts with water and food.

Branson Chamber and CVB honor members of community at gala event

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer The Branson Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and CVB enjoyed their biggest night of the year last week with hundreds attending the annual gala. Traditionally a black tie event, this year’s gala was a bit more formal and elegant, as a white tie gala.

“This year marked the 75th anniversary of the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and CVB’s Black Tie event,” explained Vice President of Member Engagement Grant Sloan. “As a way to recognize this special year for both our organization and the numerous supporters throughout the year, we wanted to elevate the look and feel by theming it ‘White Tie.’ We plan on going back to ‘Black Tie’ beginning in 2022.”

Held at the Branson Convention Center, the evening included a reception, a delectable dinner and the presentation of some very prestigious awards.

Seven awards were presented throughout the evening to very deserving members of the community.

The Mary Award is presented to an individual whose actions best align with the legacies of Mary Herschend and Mary Trimble, the first recipients of this coveted award. The recipient should demonstrate outstanding service to mankind and the community and exemplify Ozarks values. The

2021 winner of the Mary Award was Dr. Heather Lyons Burney of Faith Community Health.

The Pioneer Award recognizes an individual whose past achievements have made a unique contribution to society and enriched the lives of those in the Branson Lakes area. This year’s winner of the Pioneer Award was Tom Boyce of Tom Boyce Excavating.

The Ambassador Award is given to an individual who has a true passion for the Branson/Lakes Area, and who has furthered the mission of telling our story to visitors. The 2021 recipient of the Ambassador Award was Ballparks of America.

The Community Spirit Award is presented to a person or business who exhibits outstanding character and goes above and beyond to benefit others. This year’s winner of the Community Spirit Award was Cox Medical Center Branson.

Care for Kids is an award presented to a person or organization

with a passion for improving the lives of children and whose service has aided in preserving the future of the Branson Lakes Area.

This year’s Care for Kids Award winner was Brian Mitchell of South Central Missouri FCA. The Beautification Award is given to honor a person or organization who has improved the appearance of the Branson/Lakes Area, resulting in the enhancement of the quality of life for the community. The Beautification Award for 2021 was presented to the Aquarium at the Boardwalk.

The President’s Award is only given out on select years to commemorate the outstanding achievement or service of an individual or organization. Branson entertainer Shoji Tabuchi was honored with the 2021 President’s Award.

How would we like to go to a birthday party given in our honor and have all the gifts there be given to someone else? Our children need to understand that we are celebrating the birthday of Christ. They need to think of a gift that they can give to Jesus.

It is so heartening to see so many wonderful things being done at Christmas time for others.

I stopped to make a deposit at the bank recently and saw a notice that the bank had adopted a family to help this Christmas. One Springfield TV station had an article about someone providing coats to children. A church in a nearby town gave a ham to every family in town. Many of the shows in Branson have collected food to disperse. Shows in Branson have given benefits for the LUC Boy’s Ranch. One church gives the opportunity for folks to give a Christmas gift by giving to the building fund. Many of the clubs and organizations have selected special Christmas projects that consider

the needs of those around us. All these things provide ways to give to Jesus.

We are tempted to think that we should spend our money on our own family, but we need to teach our family to think of others. Each family needs to choose at least one thing to do to give a gift to Jesus by giving to others.

There are wonderful stories of children taking some of their own Christmas gifts and giving them to children in other countries, or even in America, to those who have less than they have.

Let’s make sure that our children experience the wonderful feeling of giving to others. Let’s discuss with our children how they would like to give the most important gift of all—a gift to Jesus.

Of course, we all know that the reason for the season is the gift that God gave the earth by sending his only son to the world for our sakes. We are told that in John 3:16, so, what could we possibly give that would begin to show our appreciation for that gift?

In the book of Matthew we read, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?

When did we see you a stranger and invite you in or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for the least of these brothers of mine; you did for me.’ (Matthew 26: 7, 8) We see by this passage that we give gifts to Jesus by

Not that it was bad. To try to put a complex situation into simplest terms, I’ve become aware that the desire to DO was (and probably

always has been) overshadowing and even swallowing up the need to just BE. It has taken moments of feeling like the rug was being pulled out from under me, and then some other times where the entire floor disappeared, to come to this point of God-ordained realization , to come to the point where I’m sick of organizing means to ends; sick of always preparing for the next big thing. All the while God has been gently whispering to my spirit that this very moment IS the big thing, that my life is to be more about divine appointments and less about making them.

ing. But when the doing is done as a means of filling a need for selfworth, you’ll always come up burnt out and empty. This has been an endless cycle for me. I don’t fit the mold of our busy society and never have, and I believe God wants to get it through my head that that’s perfectly ok with Him. He made me that way.

While everyone is upgrading to the newest device and uploading more gigabytes, I’m thinking about flowers and butterflies. While everyone is going to the next big social event, I’d rather be at home reading a book. Yes, sacrifice is an inevitable part of life, but if you are

sacrificing the person God loves and made you to be in the process, then your efforts are futile. We are taught to live by the cliche, “Be the best you can be,” while measuring ourselves by comparisons. Comparing yourself to others will always give you a skewed plumb line. All the while, God’s desire for his dearly loved child is for you to be the best YOU you can be. Anything else is denying Him the opportunity to admire His unique creation, and it is denying you your true purpose.

The “doing” will come. But the “doing” in itself won’t be a means to an end. It will be the real, natural, raw, passionate overflow of a spirit that is confidently and completely His.

Reflections: Keep it shut

BY CINDY THOMAS Staff Writer If you’ve been on social media lately, maybe you saw the memes about how starting controversial conversations at Thanksgiving can save you money on Christmas gifts. It’s true—as family gatherings resume, the political and social culture still has plenty for family members to disagree about. There’s always that rela-

tive who thinks everyone came to dinner to hear their opinion, long and loud on every topic.

Family gatherings, or even church potlucks or office parties, are the perfect time to consider, as author Karen Ehman puts it, “what to say, how to say it, and when to say nothing at all.” Fortunately, Scripture gives some guidelines.

Psalm 39:1–2 says, “I will guard my ways, lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle while the wicked are before me.” The passage implies that self-control even in challenging conversations, pausing to reflect and pray, leads to more productive outcomes. It’s tempting to set Uncle So-and-So

straight when he’s clearly ignorant, but that may not be the best way to honor a hard-working hostess and help everyone have a good time.

Some of the worst people to encounter are those who use Ephesians 4:15 to justify their caustic remarks. I’ve been whacked over the head more than once with, “Well, honey, I’m just speaking the truth in love.” It’s particularly problematic when the “truth” being issued is actually just their opinion and definitely not spoken with love. Even if there’s some truth involved, a loud confrontation usually doesn’t go well; see instead Jesus’ instructions in Matthew 18:15 about first speaking privately to the person.

Many Proverbs speak to this topic; chapter 10 says “a prating fool will fall,” but “wisdom is found on the lips of him who has understanding.” More than once I’ve had to remind myself that understanding comes by listening and asking clarifying questions, gathering information before jumping in. Sadly, people often gossip about someone’s unbiblical behavior without understanding past trauma or root causes that need real, caring solutions.

If the subject person isn’t present, there’s probably a reason they didn’t want to come.

As political tensions and pandemic concerns continue to run high in many parts of the country, perhaps a good scripture to keep

in mind during holiday gatherings is Philippians 4:8—”Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things.” That may look different in various circumstances: If a family member passed away during the year, share good memories; if someone isn’t there because of illness, pray together; celebrate kids’ school accomplishments; find reasons to be thankful. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you steer clear of controversy by taking the lead in keeping things positive—or just keep it shut.

Have you ever been winter camping? Though perhaps a better question is, have you ever woken up to a frost-covered pillow?

I don’t get to go camping often but I’ve been enough to know something both weird and important: I love winter camping.

I suspect sane folks wonder why.

First, all that cold weather makes for a great excuse to eat homemade biscuits and gravy and fried ham with abandon.

And I do love homemade biscuits and gravy and fried ham.

Second, it is hard to describe the character-building of shivering in the dark as the temperature plummets below freezing … all while figuring out how to assemble a tent. It’s like one of

those team building exercises… and if you choose the wrong team, yes, the experience will go horribly wrong. I recommend filming it for social media. Generations hence will thank you.

Or, perhaps not.

But on a serious note, if you go winter camping, there is the wood-smoke, the fire warmth, skies so clear and cold that stars no longer twinkle. And then

Here, German Impressionist artist Fritz von Uhde has depicted the holy couple making the eighty-mile journey from Nazareth to Beth¬le¬hem to pay their taxes. It is perhaps the only painting of this biblical episode where Mary is not riding a donkey but rather walking.

It is a desolate scene as they walk along a muddy track. Mary

is worn out and Uhde has captured this by the curvature of her body, and she leans into the supporting arms of a solicitous husband. In the distance, there is a house with a light shining brightly and perhaps they will be welcomed and able to rest for a while before continu¬ing their journey. The canvas is one of the somber hues of browns and grays as they walk past winter trees barren of fruit or leaves.

National Wreaths Across America is set for this Saturday

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer A national day set aside to remember, honor and teach is set for this Saturday.

The National Wreaths Across America is designed to remember our nation’s fallen heroes, honor those who have served our coun-

try, and teach our children the value of freedom.

On December 18, Wreaths Across America will be at the Ozarks Memorial Park Cemetery in Branson, laying remembrance wreaths on the graves of our nation’s fallen heroes.

The event, sponsored locally by the Branson Veterans Task Force, is held at more than 2,500 locations across all 50 states, and abroad.

Locally, Wreaths Across America and the Branson Veterans Task Force was seeking donations for enough wreaths to cover the cem-

etery’s 1,136 veterans gravesites.

That goal was met with more than enough wreaths for the graves.

The Wreaths Across America Wreath Laying Ceremony begins on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Ozarks Memorial Park Cemetery, located on Missouri Highway 76, just east

of Branson. Spectators can also catch a glimpse of the semi delivering the wreaths, as it is scheduled to travel through Branson on Saturday morning. The truck is slated to travel the Branson Landing Boulevard at approximately 8:30 on Saturday morning.

The OMC committee is working quickly on getting the “Come Back for Ozark Mountain Christmas” message placed on myriad marketing platforms including billboards, digital signage, tent cards, profile sheets and much more. Sue Braun, Executive Director of the Branson Show League and owner of Classic Creations and More, says, “We want to encourage every business and

community member to participate in making Ozark Mountain Christmas in 2022 the biggest yet. We are creating a location online for everyone to be able to download the updated logo so they can use it on their print materials, website and video. If you’d like access please email director@showsinbranson. com.”

The original logo was produced over 30 years ago in a format not suitable for today’s electronic printing formats. The redesign allows printing the

logo at very large sizes - including on billboards. In addition music, veterans, and gingerbread icons were added. Special thanks to Michael London and Tate Womack for their “get ‘er done” attitude on creating the new logo. Thanks to the Branson Show League for purchasing the decals.

The Ozark Mountain Committee is also working on special projects including a Christmas in July campaign. The next meeting for the Ozark Mountain Christmas committee is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15, at the Dutton Inn breakfast room. Everyone who wants to volunteer time to help make the future OMC seasons bigger and better is encouraged to attend.

Don’t forget, there is still time to go see a Branson Christmas season show. There is an average of 25 different shows per day through the end of December!

Answer: No such plan has been developed. As a result of conversations with several downtown businesses regarding the completion of the downtown project and its financing, the city sought information on what was available.

Alderman Seay points out that it is just one part of the city’s due diligence regarding the downtown project and its financing.

The questions came at the end of a presentation made by this journalist. That presentation and questions were the results of a December 13 communication from Joel Merrifield, the owner of Downtown Casual Wear, through the editors of the Branson Globe.

Among other things, he said the following:

“I read the ‘Unfinished Downtown Project’ article that was in the December 3 issue of the Branson Globe. In the article, the answer to question No. 5 revisits the idea of downtown parking meters to help fund the project.”

Question 5 in the article was, “What is the projected date that work will begin to complete the remainder of the project?”

The city’s answer was, “The project will resume once the city identifies a funding source to fund the rest of the project.

The city is currently looking at potential funding sources, one of which could be downtown parking meter system.”

During a December 14, 2021, interview with Merrifield, he shared the following Facebook exchange, which took place between him and alderman Seay during early November: Merrifield: Hey Jeff, It was brought to my attention this evening that the city’s engineering department was planning to install 67 parking meters on Main Street and Commercial Street in downtown Branson. Is this just s rumor? Is this something that you have heard?

Seay: Yes. Cody and I have been working on it with the

Public Works. It’s a pilot program, so it’s very low cost for us. There will also be a kiosk for the parking lot behind you. During an interview on December 14, 2021, Steve Hartley said that over a month ago, there was an exchange of emails regarding setting up meetings and suggested periods that merchants could be available. He has received no response since then.

He went on to emphasize that

Alderman Fenton, a practicing attorney, states a reality of Branson’s “aldermanic form of government.” He said that besides being an alderman, he is very busy [Earning a living.] He points out that he has met with downtown business owners as his schedule permits.

Concerned Women for America Christmas brunch: Fellowship and call to action

By CINDY THOMAS, Staff Writer The Taney County Prayer/Action Chapter of Concerned Women for America enjoyed a Christmas brunch on Dec. 14 at Grandma’s Café.

After opening prayer by State Rep. Brian Seitz, Southwest Missouri CWA director Haven Howard shared about her trip to Washington, D.C., for the Supreme Court hearing of Mississippi’s law restricting abortion access. She reported a large turnout and a peaceful, prayerful

atmosphere, even with an adjacent gathering of pro-choice advocates nearby. Attendees were encouraged to pray for life-affirming decisions.

Guest speaker for the brunch was Sophia Shore, former chapter leader for CWA’s Young Women of America at Evangel University. She now works for State Senator Mike Moon’s congressional campaign.

Shore spoke about the impact of her CWA mentors, including her mother who was particularly involved in efforts to fight common

core curriculum and retain local control of schools. As she entered college, Shore became aware of the Marxist and social justice movements infecting campuses, even some Christian colleges. Although she originally intended to go into vocational ministry, God seemed to orchestrate avenues to political involvement. She was particularly impacted by a trip to Israel for students led by Evangel professor and Biblical history scholar Wave Nunnally, as she gained understanding

of Israel’s geopolitical issues. She also had the opportunity to attend the Kavanaugh Supreme Court confirmation hearings, witnessing firsthand the accusations and the lengths to which pro-abortion activists will go. She has continued the fight against abortion at the state level, having counseled post-abortive women with their great need for healing from trauma.

Regarding her current work, Shore said she accepted the invitation to work on the Mike Moon campaign because “Senator Moon is the real deal,” fighting for conservative causes regardless of whether it benefits him politically.

Shore closed by referring to a speech given by Winston Churchill during a period of heavy bombing

by Germany prior to the U.S. entering the war, in which he vowed to continue the fight but was counting on the Americans to join the effort. Shore reminded attendees that America is still in a position to be a light to the world, but it’s our responsibility to continue the fight.

After Shore’s presentation, attendees enjoyed fellowship, door prizes and food catered by Grandma’s Café.

REEDS SPRING HS CLARINET PLAYER NAMED BEST IN STATE – More than 280 high school clarinet players auditioned for the Missouri All-State Band. Reeds Spring junior Madilyn Irvin performed best of them all, being named first chair. The auditions took place on December 4 in Columbia, and 108 musicians have been chosen to be part of the All-State Band, which will perform at the Missouri Music Educators Association Conference on January 29 at TanTar-A Resort. This is the second consecutive year that Irvin has been named to the All-State Band. She was tenth chair as a sophomore. She has also been named to the All-District Band three times, as well as the All-District choir twice. Branson Gospel Singer Songwriter Association Christmas special airs

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer The Branson Gospel Singer Songwriter Association will present “A Special Christmas” this weekend on the ALG network.

Founded by Branson’s Sherrie and DK Brewster, the Branson Gospel Singer Songwriter Association is a network of entertainers and songwriters with the common desire of sharing God’s message with their audiences. The association includes singers and songwriters from Branson and across the country.

The Christmas program will feature special guests Randy Brooks, the Garrett Sisters, Tracy Deskin and Teresa Rayburn. The production will share the true meaning of Christmas with viewers.

“It’s all about Jesus and His love,” explained Sherrie Brewster.

Local family band offers free Ozark Mountain Friday Nights

By CINDY THOMAS, Staff Writer Make plans now to join the Farnum family for their winter concert series, Ozark Mountain Friday Nights! The series is hosted every other Friday night at the New Testament Christian Church, 21016 Main St. in Reeds Spring, with shows scheduled for Dec.

17 and 31 and continuing through March, with a makeup date in April for any missed shows due to weather, etc. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show.

This free community series for residents and visitors in the TriLakes Area will consist of ten shows featuring a variety of mu-

sical styles including bluegrass, gospel, country, western swing and Irish. Some will also feature special guest artists.

The family band consists of Norm and Tricia Farnum of Galena and four of their six children: Matthew, Hannah, Benjamin, and Maggie. Son Daniel and his wife

stay connected as occasional guest performers. The family has performed in many local venues including Silver Dollar City, as well as festivals and bluegrass events in several other states. Band members have won or placed in several instrument categories at festivals including the popular Walnut Valley fiddle championship in Winfield, Kansas, and the Grand Lake National Fiddle Fest in Oklahoma.

The inspiration for Branson’s Made in the USA General Store came when Karn heard about a similar store in a suburb of Buffalo, New York – a property that captured the attention of more than 600 motor coach groups in its first two years of business, all of which made a 45-minute detour to the store, on their way to visit Niagara Falls.

“I thought, there is no detour necessary in Branson,” said Karn.

“The coaches are already here.

So, I went to New York and visited the store. It was just a basic store, but I had a vision of what I wanted to do in Branson, to set the store up like an old-fashioned general store.”

With plans to attend conventions and market his new undertaking to the motor coach industry, Karn found a private investor and a location, and got to work, spending two years researching and compiling companies to work with on his endeavor.

“The first spot we landed was in the Branson Mill, and then 12 or 13 months later, they had a change of plans and put the Mark Shorey Show in where we were located, so we had to move,” Karn noted.

From there, Karn moved his store to the Branson Mall, located between Price Chopper and Walmart on Branson’s 76 Coun-

try Boulevard. Fifteen months later, the Branson Mall closed. Karn was invited to move his Made in the USA Store to the Branson Landing, under a temporary lease. Unfortunately, after getting the store rewired and ready to go, Karn’s lease was canceled.

“I was bound and determined it was going to work, and finally we found a space here at the Branson Meadows,” Karn explained.

“It was all the way down at the bottom of the hill. We moved in, and set it all up like an old-fashioned general store. It wasn’t big enough for the ice cream bar that we had previously, so we had to put that on hold.”

For two years, Karn worked hard to promote his business in that location.

Said Karn, “I struggled and struggled to stay in business. I came within days of just calling it quits. I was working myself to death, I had no personal time, and I couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. That was the summer of 2018. All of a sudden, I found out that the Corel and Corningware store was going out of business, which was right here where I am now.”

Karn reached out to the powers that be, but was told that someone had already committed to moving into the better location.

“I really, really wanted that spot, so I kept contacting them and they kept pushing me off,”

ness has doubled. I’ve been blessed ever since.”

In his newest location, Karn enjoys a much larger facility, with approximately 4,600 of the store’s 6,000 square feet dedicated to retail space, and, just like stores of yesteryear – there is plenty of room for the ice cream fountain, where shoppers can enjoy a delicious treat.

“It has character, it’s not just a plain Jane old store,” said Karn. “ I try to make it a very interesting store and try to put things in that will appeal to just about everybody. We have a lot of merchandise that does sell very well. Every product is American made. We have stuff from every state except Alaska and Wyoming.”

Karn’s best-selling item in the Made in the USA General Store is a dish towel.

“It’s our most famous product,” Karn noted. “The whole premise behind it is that it is 100% cotton, and with an open weave, like your mother or grandmother used. It dries in six to eight hours. I have sold over 21,000 of them.”

Karn is quick to attribute his success to God’s blessings, noting, “All I can do is put my trust in Jesus Christ. God is so im-

portant to me in my life.”

Additionally, however, Karn is a diligent and savvy businessman, who works hard to market his business and all of Branson. He partners with other businesses and organizations to promote his store and attends trade shows in order to help bring more motor coach groups to Branson.

“What Branson has got to offer is absolutely awesome, with the Christianity and the wholesomeness,” Karn noted. “I think it is appealing to a lot of people.”

Karn’s desire for his store is to open people’s eyes to buying American-made products.

Said Karn, “I answer every phone call with ‘Thank you for calling the Made in the USA Store, where we create American jobs’. The money you spend in my store just doesn’t benefit me. It’s benefitting the 250 companies that I currently am

buying from. That money goes back to Pennsylvania, Montana, California, Florida, Texas, all over. It goes to support the families that are working in these companies. The money that is spent in my store is now carried to another state, another community – to those families, to grocery stores and convenience stores and so on.”

Karn continued, “What we do need to teach America is to invest today into a good product. You’ll be money ahead and the landfills are not going to be full. Hopefully, we can have an impact on influencing people to spend money on stuff made in America. I hope that people can embrace supporting our country.”

Teacher earns excellence award

SUBMITTED to Branson Globe Being a teacher requires so much more than just knowing subject matter and being able to share it. The ability to build caring and trusting relationships with students and their parents is a critical skill. Reeds Spring Primary School’s Megan Snowden is so good in that role; she earned the district’s Excellence Award.

“She makes all the students feel welcomed and ready to start their day,” wrote parent Kimber Sawyer. “My son is shy and she is helping him break out his shell.”

Snowden has taught for 19 years at Reeds Spring Schools.

Her co-workers say she is a leader in the building and an advocate for students.

“She makes every student feel loved,” wrote parent Shelby Booth. “She went above and beyond to communicate with us during COVID last year and even sent personal notes and mail to my son through the year and summer.”

Maggie, a Holstein breed, hails from the Bunse Dairy Farm in Cosby, Missouri. Bunse Dairy is owned and operated by Steven and Nathan Bunse and farmer Amy Dudeck. Local resort surprises students with Christmas party

By CINDY THOMAS, Staff Writer On Friday afternoon, Dec. 10, Hollister Tiger Academy students were loaded onto buses with their teachers and told they were heading for a field trip. Although a few suspected something special was up when each student was given an elf hat to wear on the bus, they didn’t expect to end up at Santa’s Workshop.

Pat and Wendie Dooley, owners of Dooley’s Resort & Chapel on the Lake, located on Indian Point at 1060 Crow’s Nest Trail, provided an afternoon of fun Christmas activities to students in grades K–5 of the Hollister after-school program. A former school nurse, Wendie Dooley is familiar with families the program serves, many of whom are hardworking employees in local businesses, and she and Pat

wanted to find ways to give back to the community that helps tourism in the area succeed.

were greeted by Pat Dooley as Santa Claus and Wendie as Glitzy the Elf, then entered to find beautifully decorated Christmas trees, plus festive music provided by DJ Dennis Cox of Live Events Missouri. The students enjoyed an after-school snack while listening to Christ-

mas stories read by resort manager Bekah Powers, aka Cookie the Elf. Class groups then rotated to workstations where they decorated cookies and a Christmas ornament to take home. At photo booths also provided by Live Events, each child had their picture taken and then decorated a wooden frame to turn the photo into the perfect gift for a

parent or grandparent. As students finished their handiwork or waited for rotations, they joined Santa for a singalong with his guitar and banjo.

Winter Youth Bluegrass Festival held last week in Branson

By CINDY THOMAS, Staff Writer Young bluegrass musicians and enthusiasts gathered at the Branson Event Center, 4230 Gretna Rd., on Dec. 11 and 12 for two days of instruction, performance and fun at the Branson Winter Youth Bluegrass Festival.

The festival was sponsored by Branson Academy for the Ad-

vancement of Music and Theatre, Greater Ozarks Bluegrass Society, Ozark Mountain Music Association, and Tomorrow’s Bluegrass Stars. All include as part of their mission the desire to instill and encourage love for bluegrass and traditional music in a younger generation by providing them with the encouragement and resources

Branson Central Bank Charity of the Month: Ronald McDonald House

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer The Branson Central Bank Charity of the Month for December is the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ozarks, an organization that operates two Ronald McDonald Houses in Springfield.

“We opened our first House near

Cox South Hospital in 1988, and our second House opened within Mercy Hospital in 2012,” said Bonnie Keller, President and CEO of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ozarks. “On any given night we can help up to 24 families between the two houses.”

Families utilizing the Ronald

McDonald Houses typically have a child in one of Springfield’s hospitals and need a safe and secure place to stay while they focus on their child’s care. In an average year, the homes help more than 800 families in their two Springfield locations. Since inception, the organization has helped over

14,000 families from all over Missouri, and some from other states, seeking medical treatment for an ill child. They have assisted more than 800 families from Taney County since opening their doors.

“We provide a “home-awayfrom-home,” including lodging, comfort, meals, laundry, snacks and individualized assistance to families,” noted Keller. “We try to do everything possible to take away daily tasks and concerns so our families can focus on their ill child.”

The organization operates with a staff of one program director, three associate program managers, and ten part-time family care managers providing 24-hour a day care to families. Prior to Covid, RMHCO had over 100 volunteers and is hoping to see the return of some of their volunteer staff in early 2022.

complications with a pregnancy, the Dixons were required to be no more than ten min-

utes from the hospital at all times.

“Ronald McDonald House was kind enough to let us stay there, since they are right across the street from the hospital, ensuring that the delivery of my child would be safe,” Letha explained.

“While we were there, they fed us every evening; they supplied us with cleaning supplies, laundry soaps, shampoos and bathroom supplies. We got a downstairs room, due to my being unable to walk up stairs. We were there during Easter, and they did an Easter egg hunt and baskets for all of the kids who were staying there. We were also there for my son’s birthday, and they were kind enough to give him a gift and allow us to have family there to do a small party.”

After the birth of the Dixons’ daughter, the couple went immediately to St. Louis,

where their daughter was hospitalized and ended up staying several months in that city’s Ronald McDonald House.

There, they not only received lodging and nightly meals and snacks but also rides to the hospital and assistance with clothing, as they arrived in town having brought very little with them.

“We still donate to Ronald McDonald House,” said Dixon. “They are our favorite charity.”

Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ozarks is grateful for all donations they receive.

Said Keller, “Cash donations allow us to underwrite key needs, such as staff, utilities, etc. We also have a wish list we keep updated with items most in need at, https:// rmhcozarks.org/giving/programs-wish-lists/. A great way to support the organization is to Adopt a Room for a month,

Home for the holidays: Red Cross offers fire safety tips SUBMITTED to Branson Globe Did you know that December is the peak month for home candle fires? If you’re decorating with candles this holiday season, consider using the battery-operated kind.

“It’s critical to take action now to be as safe as possible as the threat of home fires increases with the holidays and cooler weather,” said Chris Harmon, Regional Disaster Officer for the Missouri-Arkansas Region. “From July-November, Red Cross volunteers in our region responded to approximately 1,200 home fires, providing emergency assistance to more than 4,000 people. The good news is that you can take a few simple steps this time of year to help protect your loved ones.”

The risk of candle fires is so common that nearly one-third of us have left the room or fallen asleep while burning them, according to a 2020 national American Red Cross survey. If you

must use candles, never leave them unattended, keep them away from anything that could burn, and place them out of reach from children and pets.

Other holiday decorating safety tips • Check all holiday light cords to ensure they aren’t frayed or broken. Don’t string too many strands of lights together — no more than three per extension cord. Turn off all holiday lights when going to bed or leaving the house.

• Ensure outside decorations are for outdoor use and fasten lights securely to your home or trees. If using hooks or nails outside, make sure they are insulated to avoid an electrocution or fire hazard.

• Look for the fire-resistant label when buying an artificial tree.

Keep it away from fireplaces, radiators and other sources of heat. Never use electric lights on metallic trees.

• If getting a live tree, make sure it’s fresh and keep it watered.

Bend the needles up and down to make sure no needles fall off.

• Don’t light the fireplace if hanging stockings on the mantel.

• Check the labels of older decorations. Some older tinsel is lead-based. If using angel hair, wear gloves to avoid irritation.

Avoid breathing in artificial snow.

• Have good, stable placement when using a ladder and wear shoes that allow for good traction.

Help keep your family safe by testing your smoke alarms monthly and practicing your home fire escape plan until everyone can get out in less than two minutes — the amount of time you may have to leave a burning home before it’s too late.

The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety is urging drivers to avoid driving impaired as they travel to and from holiday gatherings.

Statewide, law enforcement will be on the lookout for substance-impaired drivers, with targ eted enforcement efforts Dec. 15, 2021, to Jan. 1, 20 22.

There were 61 people killed and 269 seriously injured in Missouri traffic crashes between Dec. 10, 2020, and Jan. 1, 2021.

Fourteen of the fatalities a nd 44 of the serious injuries involved a substance-impaired driver.

“Hundreds of families’ lives were changed in an

instant during what should be the most wonderful time of the year,” said Nicole Hood, MoDOT’s State Highway Safety and Traffic Engineer. “A safe ride is as easy as one phone call. Make a plan for a sober ride to avoid the tragic consequences of driving impaired.”

Those conse quences include fines, jail time or even death. Missouri is on

pace to see more than 1,000 fatalities on the highways in 2021, the most in 15 years. Have a plan to arrive to your holiday gatherings and home safely. If you plan to drink, don’t drive. Choose a designated driver, call a sober friend, order a rideshare or spend the night. But never drive impaired. If you feel different, you drive different.
