Resolved: Globe readers share goals, resolutions for new year

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer As 2021 comes to a close and a new year is about to make its appearance, many begin to think about New Year’s resolutions. Today, Branson Globe readers shared their thoughts on the new year.

Lee spoke of her resolution, “To slow down and show more love, understanding and kindness to those around me that have battles of their own. And, to wait and listen for God’s plan for my life.”

Matt also shared his thoughts.

“My New Year’s resolution is that my future self would be pleased with the decisions of my current self in all areas of my life.”

Reader Terre noted, “As I sit in my recliner with a headache and sore throat, I feel the need to concentrate on improving my health next year, to eat better and exercise more.”

Reader Alicia and her beau plan “to lose 50 pounds.” while her teen son, Russell’s resolution is to learn how to drive.

Said reader Tracie, “With the world the way it is, I have been thinking that, in a world of Grinches, I want to be a Cindy Lou Who. I’m going to try every day to say or do something nice for someone else and make their day a little brighter.”

Bev shared her thoughts, “I make proclamations, not resolutions. Proclaiming something, speaking it into existence. I proclaim this year will be full of love, compassion and kindness toward

one another. I proclaim love over hate, for everyone.”

Many readers simply focus on a word or a phrase for the year.

Said Kay, “My word for the year would be kindness.”

Mary Ann’s word is “Complete” and Becky has selected the word “Aware.”

“My two words I want to focus on for 2022 are peace and healing in my body, especially my neck and back,” said Joely.

Change the ending

Keri Durbin’s beginning is heartbreaking, being raised in a household with two parents suffering from substance use disorders. She recalls being kept in her room for extended periods of time, while slipping love notes to her parents under the door. Durbin lived this way until she was 12, when her parents received treatment and began recovery.

Around the same time, Durbin hung around kids that were beginning to experiment with marijuana and alcohol. By 15, Durbin was

pregnant. Her father adopted her son.

February 2009, at age 16, Durbin began using methamphetamine.

Over the years, Durbin was charged with drug possession, manufacturing, distribution, and other crimes associated with drug-seeking behaviors.

Durbin was given a 120-shock treatment prison sentence, followed by drug court. She lived in different residential treatment facilities and attended recovery meetings. In 2016, she worked her program but still relied on a romantic relationship to be the foundation of her recovery. When the relationship ended, she had a SEE CHANGE, PAGE 10

Donations of both toys and food poured in, and many in the Branson area enjoyed a brighter holiday season, thanks to your generosity.

Two longtime Branson Globe advertisers—The Flagstore and The World’s Largest Toy Museum—graciously volunteered to serve as collection sites for toys and food that were donated.

Toys donated by December 15 were taken to the Salvation Army for use in their annual toy distribution event, where parents were allowed to “shop” for toys and gifts for their children. Toys donated after that date were given to families who had missed the holiday assistance registration or otherwise found themselves in need of a hand-up over the holidays.

Successful radio promotion helps many in the Ozarks

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer The Ozarks Dynacom family of radio stations teamed up to give away a total of $8,000 to families throughout the Ozarks in their Sharing is Caring promotion.

Listeners were encouraged to write in to the station, explaining how $500 could make their holiday brighter.

Said Ozarks Dynacom General Manager Steve Willoughby, “2020 was a tough year for people, and we wanted to give a prize that would make an impact.”

Ozarks Dynacom partnered with a number of sponsors—The Track Family Fun Parks, Dan Boone/ Keller Williams Realty, UnderFoot Flooring, Signature Bank, Central Bank and Holt Memorial Chapel— with each sponsor providing multiple $500 checks to be given away on The Original 94.9, My 100.1, New Country 102.9 and Legends 106.3.

Winners were selected based on the information they sent in, with input from the show hosts and sponsors in the selection process.

“There were some amazing sto-

ries that came from this,” explained Willoughby. “Some people passed the winning on and helped other people. Some people really needed the help. All of our winners were very happy!”

Another friend shares a memory of Jessica James

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer Last week, we shared the news of the passing of Branson radio and entertainment legend Jessica James. Many readers shared their thoughts about Jessica, who was a friend to so many.

Carol Orr Keyser, Jessica’s boss and close friend, also shares

her comments with Jessica’s friends and fans.

“Jessica had a heart for others, as big as the ocean,” said Keyser.

“Yes, she was an excellent and loyal employee for us at Hometown Radio, but more importantly, she became a very dear friend. She is now singing with the angels and will

be missed by many that loved her.”

A memorial service is being planned in January to honor the memory of Jessica James, and details will be shared as they become available. As James’ friend and Branson entertainer Jeff Brandt noted, “We want to do Jessica proud.”

ELBA is a loveable lady who couldn’t be sweeter. She gets along well with other kitties and thoroughly enjoys attention. She is a quiet cat and would make a great family cat.

Elks Lodge toy distribution held for local children SUBMITTED to Branson Globe On Saturday, Dec 11, the Lake Taneycomo Elks Lodge and the Freedom of Road Riders Local 15 (FORR) held a toy distribution at the Elks Lodge that provided toys, hats, coats, gloves, hygiene items and food to over 70 local families.

We had over 280 children registered for this event,

and the parents who came to the Lodge were helped by “ELVES” (Elks and FORR volunteers) to pick out gifts for their children. This event was possible through a $2,000 grant from the Elks National Foundation and the annual toy run by the Freedom of Road Riders (FORR) that was held at the Lodge in November.

At the toy run, more than

10 tables of toys and $1500 was raised to help provide Christmas gifts for our local children. We would like to thank all of the local businesses who donated items for the live auction at the toy run and for donating toys for us to distribute. A special thanks to the Branson Sports Club, Harter House and the Forsyth MCJROTC.

CHARLENE is a 4-year-old female Terrier. She was owner relinquished and is house trained. She is calm and very strong. She loves to have her picture taken and will make a great addition to those Instagram photos.

Local businesses gift new roof to Taney County family

By CINDY THOMAS, Staff Writer Thanks to some caring area businesses, a Taney County woman is getting a much-needed new roof for her home.

It started when Branson barber Ricky Hollinsworth went to Gail McNish’s home to inquire about an old car she owned. Having grown up in the Powersite community, Hollinsworth considered McNish a longtime friend and was interested in restoring the car if she wanted to sell it. He noticed her house badly needed a roof and thought they might be able to work out a win-win situation, him helping with the repairs as part of a car deal, so he contacted Daniel Koren with Branson Roof Company.

Further investigation showed the job would require new lumber and other materials for a quality repair.

That discovery solved a mystery for McNish, who with her late husband built the house over 30 years ago. Over the years, the house just couldn’t seem to hold a roof more than a few years before deterioration set in. As a single mom working as a caregiver at local nursing homes and supporting a special needs son, she managed to replace the roof a few times but was discouraged at how often it had to be done. It turned out there was some poor design and

workmanship in the original construction, and correcting the problem would provide a long-term fix but also increase the expense.

When Koren heard Gail’s story, he arranged for Branson Roof to provide labor at no charge in order to help keep the cost manageable.

Koren also contacted Mike Tucker of Arrowhead Building Supply, who provided shingles for the job. “It’s a good feeling to help someone in need, especially at Christmas time” said Koren. Mike Tucker agreed; he wasn’t familiar with McNish’s situation before Koren reached out, but said the timing was providential as Arrowhead had shingles on hand

that could be donated. Branson Roof plans to continue giving back to the community in 2022 by giving away a roof to a first responder.

As for McNish, she says she en-

joyed being a “neighborhood mom” of sorts to many young people, including Hollinsworth in his teen years, and has always tried to help others when she could. Now she is tremendously grateful to Hollinsworth for taking initiative and to those businesses who stepped up to help, including the roofing crew

who, she says, were friendly, pleasant and efficient.

“I have prayed and prayed about this,” she said. “I knew that roof was way beyond bad, but I just didn’t have enough saved up. I knew if I trusted God and tried to do the best I could, he would take care of it.

And he did.”

Suppose the Compton Drive Wastewater Treatment Plant becomes inoperable. In that case, there is no way to treat the doodoo impacted wastewater flushing from the toilets of the theatres, attractions, hotels, businesses, and residents in the area north of the north edge of Highway 76.

“Wow, Seagull, that’s a lot of doo-doo.” “Oh, but wait, that’s not

all, there’s more. The Compton Plant also processes the doo-doo from Historic Downtown Branson, Branson Landing, and the City of Branson’s Lakeside RV Park.”

“But Seagull, Branson has two wastewater treatment plants. If there was a problem with the Compton Plant, couldn’t they just transfer it to the Cooper Creek Plant?” “No.” “Where would all the unprocessed doo-doo go? “Into Lake Taneycomo.” “But wouldn’t that pollute Lake Taneycomo and down river sources big time?”

“That just has to be a rhetorical question.”

“Besides Seagull, what are the odds of the Compton Plant becoming inoperable?” “Don’t have a clue, but if it does, what are the potential impacts on Branson’s economy and reputation if its ‘doo-doo gamble’ fails?”

During a June 2021 interview, Kendall Powell, Interim Utilities Director, now the Director for the City of Branson, said that in 2015 we came within inches of water getting into the compound and flooding

necessary operating components.

This would have made it inoperable.

At its June 22, 2021, meeting the Branson Board of Aldermen (Board) passed a resolution accepting a grant from the Missouri Department of Economic Development Community Development Block Grant Program to design and construct a flood wall at the Compton Drive Wastewater Treatment plant. The grant amount is $5,000,000 and will cover approximately 34.8% of the total projected project cost of $14,378,367.

During the staff report for this item at the meeting, Jamie Rouch, the Finance Director for the City of Branson, points out that this is the second grant received for this project. The city has already received a Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery for $2,752,038. Of the $14,378,367 total estimated project cost, the city currently has Community Development Block Grants for $7,752.038.

Rouch said the city is in the final stages of securing a $3,000,000 grant through the Economic Development Administration. The total amount of grants for the project is $10, 752,038 leaving approximately $3,626,329

of the total estimated project cost remaining to be covered by either grants or “local cash.”

“But Seagull, it’s been over six years since the plant was almost flooded. During that time the city’s economy and the environment have been at risk and surely the costs have not become any cheaper.” “Can’t argue with you there.”

“Why do you think it took them so long to get to this point and we still don’t have the floodwall?”

“An Ole Seagull believes it’s a matter of priority both in terms of both emphasis and financing.”

“Now Seagull, don’t give me that doo-doo. The city seems to have the money to spend millions, on fancy bathrooms, statues, undergrounding utilities, and other things. How could they not have placed more emphasis on the Compton Plant?” “Can’t really tell you why. One thing for sure though, if a flood makes it inoperable “next week,” it will be interesting to hear the gobbledygook they come up with to explain its six-year doo-doo gamble.”

“Do you think that it will be as interesting as that used to explain the downtown and Spirit of 76 debacles?” “No, in terms of emphasis, priority and financing, they are in a class by themselves!” *As used in this column, the term doo-doo includes doo-doo and associated matter typically flushed down a toilet.

Reflections: Learn from looking back

O

ne of my childhood memories is of attending New Year’s Eve “watch night” services at church. The congregation gathered for snacks and fellowship, followed by a service which ended with midnight communion and prayer.

A fun part of the evening was a slideshow (yes, I’m Kodak-35mm old) of the year’s activities. Children crowded into front pews to

watch themselves and their friends in pictures of the previous year’s Christmas program, church picnics, graduation recognition service and VBS. There were pictures of weddings held at the church and memorial photos of members who passed away during the year.

The yearly review set the stage for prayer, trusting God for the upcoming year by recalling blessings and faithful friends from the past.

Throughout the Bible, God’s people are urged to remember historical milestones. Joshua, advanced in age after leading the Israelites in conquest of the land God promised them, gathered the people for a final pep talk recorded in chapter 24. He recalled the deliverance from Egypt, miraculous crossings of the Red Sea and Jordan River, and military victories

when the situation looked frightening or impossible. Moses had done the same thing many years earlier, and both used those reminders to encourage the people to continue obeying God. Sadly, the people forgot. Their disobedience led to years of captivity, but it didn’t change God’s faithfulness. And upon their eventual return, Ezra the priest again reminded them of their history and challenged them to obey God. The New Testament continues the theme, reviewing the past in order to move the early church forward. In Acts, Stephen gave a lengthy historical review, culminating in a challenge to the religious leaders to accept Jesus as the promised Messiah. While it resulted in his death as a martyr, it also served to advance the gospel, as converts

realized God’s messengers hadn’t always been popular. The Apostle Paul often began ministry in a new city by reviewing important Old Testament prophecies that were fulfilled by Jesus’ birth, death, and resurrection.

The Bible demonstrates the oft-quoted saying that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. Every historical review in scripture ends with a challenge to do better or make the right choice.

Without those reviews, it was easier to look at circumstances or personal convenience rather than thinking through possible consequences.

The principle still applies to our nation: An honest examination of the economic and social consequences of past policies can help influence better future decisions; conversely, ignoring or failing to

discuss the unpleasant parts of history has already had disastrous consequences. In our personal lives, being honest about what has and hasn’t worked can help us teach children and grandchildren to make better choices.

As we welcome a new year, take time to look back. While it has been a discouraging year for many, try to focus on ways God has been faithful. In my family, that includes grieving the loss of my dad while recalling his faithfulness, generosity and trust in God even in hard times. For others, it might include being thankful for friends who stepped up to help during illness or following storm damage. Whatever your circumstances, let the Bible encourage you, and enter the new year in obedience to God and confidence in his provision.

hen children get sick, as they inevitably do, we often ponder about how much to

Winters of my childhood consisted of the occasional heavy snow, the occasional ice storm and mostly a lot of frozen earth. I remember one week back in January of 1988 the thermometer fell to about -20°F and then stayed there.

Not a ton of snow — just a world frozen solid, buried beneath an overcast sky. No wonder I got good at building

model airplanes (the DC3 with Arctic gear was a particular treat.)

Fortunately, my childhood was blessed with travel so there were Christmastimes in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Yellowstone National Park, even Sequoia National Park out in California (where the only thing more impressive than the four feet of snow was the trees larger than buildings).

However, amid all the travel,

there’s one image that haunts my mind of late.

Early morning in the southern mountains, somewhere between Nashville and Chattanooga. An incandescent sun through hoarfrost and mist.

Barren tobacco fields seemed to glow. Old barns – upon which many were written the words, “See Rock City” — were weathered and dark. The smell of woodsmoke was in the air.

Train Up a Child: When children get sick

“baby” them or just how to care for them. What mother has not sat by the side of a sick child and thought, “I’d rather it were me feeling that way than my child”? It hurts us emotionally while at the same time it is hurting the child physically.

Of course, we try to do all we can to prevent that sickness in the first place. We encourage the children to wash their hands often, singing “Happy Birthday” while scrubbing with soap and warm water to make sure the hands are scrubbed long

enough to get clean. We do our best to make sure the child has plenty of fruit and vegetables in the diet to provide the vitamin C and other nutrients needed to fight the germs.

We try to see that the child is dressed properly for the cold weather, and we try to keep the child away from places where we know germs are present. In spite of all our care, we often feel at least a little guilt when the child gets sick as we wonder if we did all we could have done to prevent the illness.

There are actually some positive things that come from sickness.

One such positive learning is that children come to realize that they are vulnerable. Many young people often feel as though they can do anything and nothing bad will ever happen. Sickness teaches a child that we each need to be careful with how we care for ourselves. A time of sickness in the home can become a time of bonding between family members as all pitch in and help the sick one. The sick child may learn

A mild and slower season in a mild and slower land. And despite the crush of commercialism even here in the Ozarks, there is the smell of wood smoke on a frosty morning and a sense the green earth may be still but is yet breathing.

I think it’s time to start a fire. And maybe fry some bacon.

It seems that we can never truly appreciate the feelings of others until we, ourselves, have experienced what they are going through. People who seldom get sick often are impatient with those who do get sick more often.

Said Cindy, “Thanking my Lord more often. It seems when things are going well, I slack on it.”

Branson Globe Editor Janet Steinkamp prefers setting goals over making New Year’s resolutions. “I believe in this quote from a local library,” Steinkamp shared. “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” “A goal of mine is to make time for reading (and less time for social media) from my long list of nonfiction and faith-based books.”

Digital/Production Director Karen Halfpop shared her unique perspective on the coming of 2022. Said Halfpop, “I don’t make specific resolutions; however, I do enjoy thinking about a shiny new year. A new year, ready and waiting for me to make it great—or sleep through it—my choice. God gives us the tools—prayer, His Word, worship, service—and this is a great time to unpack those tools and get excited about using them!”

recurrence of symptoms after 18 months in remission.

In five short months, Durbin’s father passed away, her children were placed in state’s care, and she lost her job and her home.

She was suicidal. On January 1,

2019, two days after her suicide attempt, Durbin was arrested and discovered she was pregnant with her fourth child.

“God used everything that happened to take ahold of me and say enough is enough,” as Durbin recalls her feelings of those first days incarcerated in 2019. This

was the first time she felt a spiritual guidance in the recovery process, and in the Taney County Jail, it ignited her passion for recovery.

Durbin’s recovery has not been easy. She struggled with a negative and resentful attitude, accompanied by fear of openly commu-

nicating with others about herself.

She faced 15 years in prison and had an open DFS (Department of Family Services) case involving her son.

Lori’s House, a residential treatment facility for pregnant women, welcomed Durbin after her release from jail.

Durbin had to learn new communication and life skills, such as budgeting and parenting. She has learned to analyze her thought patterns, words, and behaviors, asking herself “is this healthy?”

She began to cultivate a healthy support system relying on them to help her appropriately cope and move forward. She finds encouragement and accountability with open and honest communication.

Having been a recipient of a grant through Preferred Family Healthcare, she is honored to now use her experiences to help other mothers. She is a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS), working towards her Certified Reciprocal Peer Recovery (CRPR) certification, which requires more training.

She earned an associate degree in business from Bryan University. She’ll walk with her class on January 28, 2022.

November 2020. She is proud to amicably co-parent with her children’s father. Her oldest son was formally adopted by her sister, who allows communication and visitation. Durbin’s eyes fill with tears when speaking about her gratitude knowing that she’s afforded the opportunity to have a relationship with all three of her living children.

She will be released from probation in July 2022.

For Durbin, recovery began with complete honesty about her substance use disorder, asking for help, and her willingness to change. Through hard work and dedication, she has changed her ending.

On January 1, 2022, she will celebrate three years of recovery.

When asked what she wants people to know, she answered, “You are worth it. You can do this. Recovery is for all, not just one.”

Elevate Branson announces 2022 Elevate Work class schedule SUBMITTED to Branson Globe Elevate Branson is excited to announce the 2022 class schedule for Elevate Work. The first class of the year is scheduled to start on Monday, January 10.

Classes are held two evenings weekly for nine weeks and include free transportation if needed, plus free childcare and dinner. Application fee is just $20, and the classes themselves are FREE. Elevate Work is dedicated to

addressing poverty caused by a chronic lack of employment, as well as the social and emotional issues that stem from perpetual lack of meaningful work through several family generations. Students learn to identify their strengths, find purpose, discover the identity and purpose gained through meaningful employment, and build the communication skills needed to advance and reach their full potential in the workforce. As one

2021 graduate put it, “It’s not just about finding a job and keeping it. It’s much more than that.

I relearned the purpose God has for my life.” The classes can also provide valuable rebuilding and connections for people who have skills and experience but are discouraged by major life changes such as health issues, divorce, or death of a spouse.

Radio personality heads to Las Vegas to pursue new career

Willoughby’s last show will be Friday, December 31, as he leaves the following week to take a position as the utility production manager for a successful social media content creation company.

Willoughby’s father—and Ozarks Dynacom General Manager Steve Willoughby—explained that, as his boss, he is happy for the young broadcaster.

“We are building Ozarks DynaCom with talented people who have options,” Steve noted. “We can’t be surprised when those people take

On a personal note, Steve added, “Russ and I are friends, each other’s supporters, and family.

Russ Willoughby shared his thoughts on the transition. “Branson is my home,” said Russ. “My family, friends and community are here, and “The Up Side” has hands down been the most fun ‘work’ I’ve ever done. As for the future of “The Up Side,” Steve Willougby said, “Right now we are focused on Russ’ last few shows, then getting Josh Clark some time away. We will make a decision in mid-February, and go strong in March.”

Willoughby’s co-host Josh Clark shared his thoughts. “Obviously I’m a little bummed out to lose a partner, brother and friend I was lucky enough to ‘work’ with for nearly two years, and I use the word ‘work’ lightly,” said Clark.

“As much as I’ll miss hanging out with Russ every morning, I know he’s going to flat-out kill it in his new job. This is just the first step to a successful journey, and I can’t wait to see how far he goes. And, since this is his hometown, I’d be willing to bet he’s still going to pop in on “The Up Side” from time to time.”

Clark continued, “As far as the future of “The Up Side,” we’ll be slowly transitioning into a new phase later this spring, but the same fun, foolishness and great times will remain. After all, there is always an Up Side!”

you, mark your calendar for the next session of Learning on Wednesdays at the Kimberling Area Library. On Wednesday, January 12, join Sharon Clarke, KAL’s resident e-book specialist, for a presentation on the basics of the “Libby” app for easy reading in 2022. The Libby app allows you to discover a new world of

book titles at any time, using your smartphone or tablet and an internet connection.

If you want to read digitally and don’t know how to begin, this presentation is the perfect opportunity to get started! Even if you prefer the feel of a quality book in your hand, there are times when e-books are a

good option; for example, it’s convenient when traveling, and a great pastime if bad weather makes it hard to get to the library. Or maybe you’re just running out of room for collecting new titles and have to be selective about buying more.

five requests. We have been operating with reduced hours since May of 2020. We depend on our volunteers to staff the library and the onsite retail stores. Due to Covid, at least 40% of the volunteers had health concerns and requested a leave of absence.”

Prior to the Covid pandemic, the

library had been open until 7 p.m. each Tuesday. As of January 4, that schedule will resume.

“The hours will be more convenient for the ‘8 to 5’ workers,” noted Schemper-Carlock. “We are the only location in the area that offers public computers. Between computer usage and document printing, residents and visitors will appreciate the convenience.”

Schemper-Carlock added that another request from the library membership was the availability of meeting space.

“One of the biggest trends we saw in 2021 was a need for meeting space,” Schemper-Carlock explained. “Remote workers appreciate the free Wi-Fi access, with comfortable seating and desk space. Printing and photocopying continue to be in high demand and is another convenient business service we provide.”

Popular and talented Branson entertainer celebrates 50 years in music business

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer Jeff Buckles began singing as a young child. By the time he was nine, Buckles was singing

and playing drums with his family’s musical group, The Gospel Tones, traveling and performing across a six-state region.

A gifted vocalist, Buckles performed on stage with many gospel greats including the Blackwood Brothers, J.D. Sumner and the Stamps, R.W. Blackwood and the Blackwood Singers, The Texans, Gary McSpadden, and more.

Buckles has also performed alongside many mainstream artists, including Barbara Fairchild and Jody Miller, and has worked with a number of popular actors, including Mike Connolly of the television series “Renegade” and Hollywood actor Leonard Reed, among others.

No stranger to the recording studio, Buckles has recorded numerous albums with his fam-

ily, as well as a number of solo projects. His first solo album for Priority 1 Records was released nationwide in 2002. A follow-up song, “I’m Living with Heaven in Mind” made the Top 100 European Christian Country Charts, and a later release, “The Only Reason I Look Back,” was in the top 100 on both the International Country Music Charts and the Worldwide Country Music Charts. Another single, “Taste of Heaven”, was a number one hit on the ReverbNation Music’s regional chart.

Buckles was a nominee for “Favorite Male Vocalist of the Year’’ by the International Academy of Music Arts and Sciences, and locally has twice been nominated as Male Vocalist of the Year by the Best of Branson Awards.

A member of the Kansas City

Christian Music Association and the Country Gospel Music Association, Buckles enjoys sharing his music with Branson audiences. He has graced the stages of many Branson venues, including the Grand Country Theater, Branson Mill Craft Mall, the Little Opry Theater, but can currently be seen at the Fall Creek Steakhouse and Seafood Restaurant.

The retired U.S. Army veteran performs his show, “Music Memories,” Tuesday through Sunday evenings, entertaining audiences from across the nation who travel to the music mecca of Branson.

Or perhaps you have a bulky appliance plug that always hangs halfway out of the slot due to the pull of gravity. Can these things really be a fire hazard? Yes. Here is why: After a lot of daily wear and tear, the contact points inside of the plug slot become damaged, and they will eventually lose the ability to hold the plug in tightly.

They can also incur additional damage when someone yanks on the cord to unplug it. (This not only causes damage to your outlet, but to the cord itself. Always firmly grip the plug end and pull it straight out to prevent this.)

On the inside of a loose or worn outlet, the prongs of the plug cannot make a direct connection to the contact points. This makes the electricity arc (jump from one contact surface to the other). Electrical arcing causes extreme temperatures reaching up to 400 degrees in some cases. As you can imagine, constant arcing will melt down the plastic casing and interior metal contacts. The pictures below show two outlets that have been damaged by the continuous internal arcing that occurred when a large appliance plug hung halfway out of the outlet. If you can see any part of the

are, of course, occasions when this is not true. If a child starts to take advantage of the extra attention, we need to back off. When a child

is truly sick, however, that child needs assurance of love and care.

We need a balance of not seeming overly concerned but, at the same time, children need to know that we wish the best for them. To this day, I can remember my mom’s hand on my forehead when, as a child, I would get sick and throw up. I’m sure that hand did no physical good, but it showed that she cared. Another memory is a time when my dad brought a pretty colored ear of corn from the field for

me when I had tonsillitis.

Should a child be allowed to watch TV? Yes, but only educational programs. Should a child do homework? The child should do homework only if he/she is not feeling too badly. I would not force it but would check occasionally to see if he/she feels like it, and then I would give assistance. Should a child be allowed to get up and run around? Generally, we need to allow a child to do what that child feels like doing until the temperature has been

normal for at least 24 hours. Then the child probably needs to go back to school. Sometimes, medicine can make a child feel better while he/she is getting worse. This may be the case when medicine is given to treat symptoms only and the medicine does not treat the cause of the symptoms.

We probably will not do everything perfectly when our children get sick.

We simply try to give proper physical and emotional care to the best of our ability and pray that the Great Physician will do whatever else is needed.

New Year’s Eve events are planned at Big Cedar Resort

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer Branson’s Big Cedar Resort is the place to be for New Year’s Eve, as the resort rings in the new year in style with celebrations for all ages.

A special party for kids is set for December 31. The Wonderland New Year’s Eve party includes bowling, laser tag, face painting, balloon animals, crafts, lots of food and fun. Designed for ages 4 through 12, the event is $95 per child and is open to the public, but reservations are

required.

Teenagers will also enjoy an exciting evening, beginning with dinner in the Table Rock Room at 7:00, followed by fun and games in the arcade until 9:00. Next on the agenda is a private light tour around the property and a private ice skating party at 10 p.m. Reservations are required. The cost is $95 for teens age 13 to 17.

Families can enjoy a night of fun and frivolity at Fun Mountain, with bowling, attractions, drawings and delicious food

College of the Ozarks hosts officer candidate Seth Ratliff’s commissioning ceremony SUBMITTED to Branson Globe The College of the Ozarks Military Science Department commissioned officer candidate Seth Ratliff as a second lieutenant in the Missouri Army National Guard recently. The Commissioning ceremony was hosted at The William S. Knight Center for Pa-

by College of Ozarks President Jerry C. Davis, college administrators, Ratliff’s family, and Bobcat GOLD (Guard Officer Leader Development) instructors.

Ratliff is a senior business management major, who graduated earlier this month.

Brigadier General James Schreffler serves as associate professor of military science at College of the Ozarks and assistant adjutant general, Army, for the Missouri National Guard.

“This was a very exciting day for 2nd Lt. Ratliff and his family as he begins his leadership

journey as an officer in the U.S. Army,” Schreffler said. “2nd Lt. Ratliff has been a fixture in the Bobcat GOLD program from its inception, and we are extremely proud of his accomplishment as he makes the transition from enlisted officer candidate to commissioned officer.”

The Bobcat GOLD Program is the College’s officer candidate program. Students graduate as second lieutenants in the Missouri Army National Guard (MOARNG) after leadership training and after developing

teamwork and managerial skills.

The leadership of the MOARNG has worked closely with the College to help design the program to best equip cadets, honor the mission and goals of the College, and assist the MOARNG in developing future leaders.

“This is the first step of a very promising career for 2nd Lt. Ratliff as he becomes a leader in the ranks of less than one percent of the American population who dedicate themselves to a career of service to country in the U.S. military,” Schreffler said.

Custodian earns award Missouri’s winter eagle watching is spectacular SUBMITTED to Branson Globe School custodians are often the first people in the building and the last to leave. Reeds Spring Middle School’s Carmela Roe has been working so hard that she earned the district’s Excellence Award.

“Anytime you see Carmela in the halls she is busy doing something, the lady never stops,” said paraprofessional Andi Watson.

Roe is new to the district this year.

It’s clear to see that she’s quickly made an impression.

RSMS librarian Aimee Dillon said, “At the start of the school year, I was preparing to dust all the shelves in the library. After a few shelves, I noticed there wasn’t any dust. Carmela had cleaned all the shelves! In all my years of teaching, I’ve never seen a custodian who works harder and does a better job!”

“The dedication and pride she takes in doing a great job are unmatched,” said teacher Jen Mayfield.

“She can be seen cleaning the tops of doors and window seals. She is always on the go cleaning something.”

Water and cold temperatures can be extremely dangerous SUBMITTED to Branson Globe The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District, is reminding boaters to think about winter water safety and the added dangers that could come with an accidental cold-water immersion.

Water temperatures have dropped well below the normal warm bathwater temperatures you would expect on a hot summer day. This time of year, most people aren’t expecting to get wet when they visit local lakes and rivers.

Accidentally falling in the water could prove fatal if boaters are unprepared.

Boaters should dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature. Cold-water immersion

causes many boating-related fatalities. If you fall in cold water without a life jacket, the combination of shock and fatigue are going to play a huge factor in whether you survive or not.

The initial shock following a submergence in cold water causes panic and confusion. Alcohol consumption, age and physical fitness are going to come into play if you’re a good distance from the shoreline or your vessel.

If you are able to get out of the water, you are going to need warm clothes, a blanket or heat source to get warm. Having a change of clothes or emergency blanket in your vessel could be your best defense against the lingering effects

of hypothermia. Getting out of the wind and wet clothing are very important during this time.

USACE officials ask everyone to take a few extra minutes before you leave home and think about a cold-water plan and the effects of falling in frigid water. Make sure you’re wearing a life jacket, the

appropriate clothing and have a backup blanket or heat source to get warm.

Always file a float plan with someone before you leave. The assurance of someone knowing where you are going might keep you from panicking if you are in the water for a prolonged period

of time.
