Challenge
Pan Pacific Park is a green area in Los Angeles located in between Beverly hills and hollywood district, right next to The Grove shopping center. The park has been an indispensable part of the neighborhood. More than merely a green space in the city, the park provides jogging track, Museum, Library, basketball courts, baseball diamonds and playgrounds. People come regularly for sports and recreation, mostly during weekends, either between 6-10am or 4-6pm depends on the accoasion.
Build a kindergarten in the park might lead us into two big issues : Safety and privacy. School most likley need its private spaces, especially pre-schools, in order to guard and control the children. However, The park itself is too open in which it is not safe enough to let children wander around it. Also, as pan pacific park is used regularly, privacy for children is hard to maintain.
Goals To provide educational need of surrounding neighborhood for pre-schooler. Most of education experts agreed that early education needs more than just a building but also adequate spaces for children to move around and play. With more spaces, early cognitive system could develop better. The Pan pacific park contour and environment is considered to be a suitable location to enhance children cognitive development
Pan Pacific Park
Concept
:
Play the park’s contour is possible to create an interplay between the kindergarten with its surrounding. Its main goal is to integrate with the landscape yet keeping the children safe inside the school from any outside danger. The building also has to be sequential in users’ experience as well as systematically concur with specific pedagogy
Equilibration
The concept comes from Jean Piaget pedagogy which theoritically explain about an essential factor that influence children cognitive development called equilibration. this term is invented by Piaget to describe how children learn the new knowledge, comprehend it, and use it in real-life. Equilibration means a process to achieve equilibrium. Piaget believe that in equilibration children have to undergo two sub-proccess called Accomodation--incorporate existing scheme to fit the new knwoledge in--and assimilation--Adjusting the new knowledge without changing the existing scheme. These two characteristic juxtapose and counter each other in order to balance the learning proccess, which eventually lead to the state of equilibrium. This Project manifests the interplay between assimilation and accomodation, by translating them into spatial relationship and experiences. The site itself also an example of integration between the bi-nuclear ideas, which is incorporated in the project.
Acco m o da t i o n In Assimilation, what is perceived in the outside world is incorporated into the internal world , without changing the structure of that internal world, but potentially at the cost of "squeezing" the external perceptions to fit
Equilibration a proccess of attaining equilibrium from the sequential reaction between assimilation and accomodation in order to comprehend the new knowledge.
Assimilation In Accommodation, the internal world has to accommodate itself to the evidence with which it is confronted and thus adapt to it, which can be a more difficult and painful

Project Description
Concept : Camouflage
1570 East Colorado Boulevard Pasadena, CA 91106
Located in Pasadena City college, the project is built on the pcc common area, intersections of campus main circulations. It links the west parking lots to most of the classes on campus, also a buffer zone between west and east side campus. The site consists Cafeteria, outdoor seating area, and green spaces.
Human capability of emulate the model to solve its own solution could be one of the solution for architectural project. Human observational learning is similar to what it is called camouflage--The art of deception for self-protection. Camouflage is a suitable concept for landscape project. Its bi-nuclear idea between conceal and advertisement could provide a dynamic play between spaces that would affect people’s movement and direction.
Problem The site is not being used efficiently. The open spaces is inconvenience for student to stay, the cafeteria lacks of spaces and has inefficient spatial relationship, and the park is rarely used by students.

Bi-nuclear idea on site The two main programs : Study lounge and caffeteria incorporate the concept of camouflage to achieve effectiveness of the programs. By breaking the surfaces and adjust the heights of two spaces, cafeteria as a public spaces will attract people around to keep study area away from circulation congestion. Both programs are linked underground to avoid collision with perpendicular main circulation.
The Interplay of breaking vs blending, conceal vs reveal, and attracting versus hiding will improve the quality of experience in each program. Study lounge that needs quiet environment and comfortable spaces is placed below the ground zero to prevent people walking through as well as enhance more suitable ambience within.
study lounge
On the other hand, cafeteria is placed above the ground zero and provide more opening to attract people, solving the problem where the old cafeteria is often being unnoticed. The roof is also set higher than normal so that it could shade the

External Reference : Deviantart Deviantart is an online community showcasing various forms of user-made artwork. It aims to provide a platform for any artist to exhibit and discuss works. in some cases, users who exhibit exceptional artworks will get more praises and favorites than the others, and the most popular one will be shown in the homepage.
Concept : Recognition Deviantart based their system on recognition, which literally means an identification of something as having been previously seen. An object comes to recognition when it stands out from the crowd, in other words, different. A differentiation could only be achieved when thebi-nuclear ideas balance each other, between deviation and conformity. Conformity creates uniform and order, where the deviation creates a chaos, evoking recognition.

Description
Solution
The Project is located in Pasadena, between two commercial buildings, southern california funding, holly street apartment and city’s park. interestingly, the site has a direct, diagonal access from the subway on Holly street. The other access are historical Legge alley and union street in the front (one way street). The site is rarely passed by, seems dangerous to an extent, also inefficiently functioned. This project propose to renovate the one-floor solitary building on union street as well as occupying the parking spot and unused alley on both side of the building.
The building first need to adapt the grid and use the subway datum efficiently to creates hierarchy; thus people who comes out from the highway would attract to the project and approach it. A new program, art gallery will be added to balance the tea house program and provide aesthetic needs. following the city codes, the project will be two-story height, as high as surrounding buildings, so that the circulation and the program could be adjusted in a way to prevent confusion.
Challenge
Components
Two major issues in this site are: Subway, historical alley and shifted grid. The subway underneath makes the project impossible to go underneath the ground. The unconvetional grid also cause the site as a buffer zone of two system, which provides better bounding box than the normal grid. Last, historical alley could not be build or replaced.

Concept : Waterfall waterfall as a concept could be interpreted in various ways. In this project, based on the diagram of abrasion and hydraulic action in waterfall, three distinctive characteristics could be determined further as an architectural concept, which are: shifting, layering, and veiling. Those three characteristic could create and improve unique experience in a building. Shift will create dynamics in a building. Layering will creates hierarchy of the programs. While veiling would interconnect but separate public and private spaces.

Project Description People always needs shelter when they are at the beach to protect them from the harsh sunlight. Therefore this project proposes a shelter for people to rest as well as functions as focal point and datum at the beach. The building components will include seating area and beach guard’s post. Several requirements for the project are: Adequate openings for natural lighting, clear visibility and appropiate location for the guard’s post, and harmonization between the enclosure and the site.
Concept : Centralization
Diagram
The main concept of the shelter is centralization. The concept derives from the movement of group of people near any attractive spot. They usually get attracted and began to condensed towards the spot, while it is getting loose as it goes further from the center.

Refinement
Imagining people’s movement at the beach and convert it into black and white visual graphics. the dimension of the shade represents the size of people in one group.
transform the 2D graphic into 3 dimensional form while maintaining conceptual quality of the drawing
refining the form into architectural model, as well as incorporate three different structures: Solid, translucent, and transparent. The form also begins to blends into surroundings.
The final model refines the spaces by considering the accesibility for visitor and beach guards. The envelopes starts from the surfaces and forms a wave-like enclosured while being supported by vertical beams. The guard post is located at the second floor to provide better visibility to the sea, and given a wide openings which supported by centralized frames. The first floor functions as seating area and main circulation from parking lots to the sea.
