Celebrating the best of orchestral music

02

Welcome, I am delighted to introduce the CSO’s 2017 concert season and invite you to join us on a year-long musical journey. Throughout the season we explore some of the great masterpieces of our rich orchestral history, celebrate the music of our lifetime and make our own contribution to the musical future through two newly commissioned works. Beyond the stage the CSO’s Community Engagement Programme will present over 100 activities to more than 20,000 people throughout the South Island. We continue our partnership with Jolt Integrated Dance and begin a new collaboration with Pathway Reintegration, ensuring people of all ages and walks of life have the opportunity to experience live instrumental music. Our sincere thanks to our sponsors, funders, donors and patrons for their support and encouragement. It is through their assistance that we are able to offer such a varied and dynamic programme for the people of this city. This year we also celebrate Lamb & Hayward’s remarkable milestone of 25 years of continuous sponsorship of our Masterworks series. It has never been a better time to subscribe and with a number of sold out concerts during 2016, I encourage you to do so. We have introduced several new subscription options for 2017 to give you more choice and greater flexibility. With a stunning selection of guest artists and your own outstanding orchestra, you won’t want to miss out! We look forward to seeing you there.

Message from

our Chief Conductor The very best music never fails to evoke an emotional response. It has the capacity to transport us to a rich world of imaginative possibilities. It invites us to form a connection with it – often one which we never forget. It’s extraordinary how our minds can be taken back so vividly to the circumstances in which we first heard a particular piece of music. It is one of the most powerful human reactions in all art, if not the most powerful. Within the 2017 CSO season there is an abundance of music which deserves the description of ‘the very best’. Landmark works such as the 9th Symphony of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky’s 5th, Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet, Dvořák’s 9th and Copland’s heroic 3rd Symphony form a selection of highlights. These cornerstones of the repertoire sit alongside more recent masterworks by composers such as the Polish genius Lutosławski, the deeply spiritual Russian Sofia Gubaidulina, Estonian mystic Arvo Pärt, American icons John Adams and Samuel Barber and New Zealand’s own Philip Norman and John Psathas. These works present a wonderful opportunity to experience and, perhaps, discover new masterpieces of the more recent past. We are delighted to welcome a stunning array of soloists, including our wonderful CSO Concertmaster Martin Riseley performing Beethoven, and brilliant violinist Mark Menzies, who has recently returned from many years in the USA to be Head of Performance at the University of Canterbury School of Music.

04

The very popular Silver-Garburg Piano Duo make a welcome return and Hungarian pianist Dénes Várjon, Swedish cellist Torleif Thedéen, British violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen and Australian star pianist Simon Tedeschi all make solo appearances in 2017. Acclaimed cellist Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt and one of New Zealand’s most distinguished artists, pianist Michael Houstoun, will each lead concerts of classical and early romantic repertoire in the Beca Artist Series. Our Leighs Construction CSO Presents series again offers something for everyone in 2017. From a concert remembering pop icon David Bowie, the Last Night of the Proms, A Festive Christmas and performances specifically for younger audiences such as the hilarious (and informative) Lemony Snicket’s The Composer is Dead. Keep an eye out also for our Discover the Music and CSO ensembles performing across the year in a library near you! I can’t begin to tell you how much I am looking forward to the 2017 season with the CSO. And it’s not just because of the PwC Opera at Pegasus Bay winery (although I am VERY excited about that), or the Royal Feast to the music of Handel in the Great Hall. I’m mainly looking forward to seeing you at our concerts; to taking you all on a musical journey which inspires and transports us. On behalf of all at the CSO we warmly invite you to share the 2017 season with us. Hopefully we will be reminded of special times in our lives, and also make some new, equally powerful memories that we can reflect on and cherish in the years to come.

The 2017 Lamb and Hayward Masterworks series opens with a sparkling fanfare, specially commissioned for the occasion by renowned Canterbury composer Philip Norman. Performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Hungarian pianist Dénes Várjon makes a welcome return after appearing with the CSO in the 2012 Mozart Festival. Várjon has been awarded the highest cultural distinction by the Hungarian Government – the Ferenc Liszt Prize, and has an extensive discography of recordings on the Naxos, Teldec and Hyperion labels. He performs regularly with Europe’s leading orchestras and is a highly sought after chamber musician, performing alongside musicians that include Steven Isserlis, Joshua Bell and Heinz Holliger. Prokofiev, a master of orchestral colour, captures the romance, drama and tragedy of Shakespeare’s best known work in his Suite from Romeo and Juliet. It is a work much admired for its descriptive musical writing and the ingenious way in which the machinations of the feuding Montague and Capulet families are depicted.

Homage BACH  Ricercare a 6 arr. Anton Webern GUBAIDULINA  Offertorium BRAHMS  Piano Quartet No. 1 op. 25 arr. Arnold Schoenberg

Homage explores music that draws inspiration from the work of other composers. Arnold Schoenberg was an ardent admirer of the great romantic composer Johannes Brahms. As a young composer, Schoenberg studied the orchestral works of the German master extensively and considered them exemplars of how to write for orchestra. As a gesture of his great respect, Schoenberg arranged Brahms’ Piano Quartet for full symphony orchestra. The resulting work eloquently captures the flair, rhythmic and melodic bravado of gypsy folk tunes. Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina composed Offertorium for the renowned violinist Gidon Kremer. It was immediately lauded for its

striking beauty and reverential qualities. With overarching themes of sacrifice and offering, it also contains musical inspiration from Bach and Webern – composers greatly admired by Gubaidulina. Opening the concert is Bach’s Ricercare a 6 from his Musical Offering arranged by Anton Webern. It is a masterful treatment of instrumental colour, exploring Bach’s 18th century composition through the musical consciousness of a 20th century composer. New Zealand violinist Mark Menzies has been described in a recent Los Angeles Times review as an “extraordinary musician” and a “riveting violinist”. Based in the United States for 26 years, he was appointed Head of Performance at the University of Canterbury in July 2016.

From the New World Hamish McKeich  Torleif Thedéen

Swedish cellist Torleif Thedéen makes his CSO debut performing Dimitri Shostakovich’s witty and sardonic Cello Concerto No. 1.

This, his final symphony, is heavily influenced by Native American and African American music traditions as well as his beloved Czech folk melodies.

Thedéen came to international attention in 1985 after winning both the Rostropovich and Pablo Cassals cello competitions. Today, he performs throughout the globe and his extensive recordings have attracted critical acclaim, including the Cannes Classical Award for his CD of Shostakovich Cello Concertos.

The symphony’s premiere at Carnegie Hall was met by rapturous applause from the audience at the end of every movement. It became an overnight sensation, quickly becoming one of the most popular symphonies of all time.

Czech romantic composer Antonín Dvořák composed his ninth symphony during his tenure as Director of the National Conservatory of America.

The title of John Psathas’ Tarantismo is taken from the term tarantism – the hysterical condition believed to be caused by the bite of the tarantula spider. As far back as 1100 BC, it was believed that this fast paced whirling dance could counter the effects of the tarantula’s venomous bite.

Performing Francis Poulenc’s effervescent and vivacious Concerto for Two Pianos, the CSO is delighted to welcome back to Christchurch the captivating Silver Garburg Piano Duo. With performances in 50 countries across five different continents, the Silver Garburg Piano Duo is hailed as one of the leading piano duos performing today. French impressionist composer Maurice Ravel wrote La valse at the request of ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev. Unfortunately, the pair fell out and the ballet never eventuated. However, Ravel’s cynical tribute to the waltz lives on. Polish composer Witold Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra was commissioned by the Warsaw Philharmonic to celebrate its rebirth after the devastation of the German occupation. It is considered one of the great works of the second half of the 20th century and concludes with an astonishing and dramatic climax. Arvo Pärt is an Estonian minimalist composer whose music takes inspiration from Medieval and Renaissance instrumental and vocal music. Composed to commemorate Britten’s death, Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten is a reflective piece written for strings and a single bell.

Tamsin Waley-Cohen

VIOLIN

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was fiercely proud of his Russian heritage and while he was adamant his Fifth Symphony was not a nationalist work, its themes and melodies are heavily imbued with Russian character. It is an unapologetically romantic work, traversing tragedy to joyfulness in a dramatic and grandiose musical journey. Elgar’s poignant Sospiri (Sighs) was composed in the months preceding the outbreak of World War I. Although originally intended as a companion piece to his wildly popular and sentimental Salut d’amor, Sospiri evoked a far deeper emotional character, possibly reflecting the mounting threat of conflict and growing geo-political tension of the time. Counted amongst the most exciting of the new generation of violinists and with playing described by the UK’s Sunday Times as “radiant and soaring”, British violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen makes her CSO debut performing Samuel Barber’s lyrical and brilliant Concerto for Violin.

For the Common Man Benjamin Northey  Simon Tedeschi

CHIEF CONDUCTOR

PIANO

Described by composer John Adams as “a thrilling ride in a terrific sports car”, Short Ride in a Fast Machine is a lively and vibrant fanfare for full orchestra. Having already established a reputation for himself as a talented songwriter, George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F major, composed in 1926, initially confused critics and provoked heated arguments – was it jazz or was it classical music? Undeterred by the critics, early audiences loved it and embraced the concerto’s playful cheerfulness and astounding virtuosity. Returning to perform Gershwin’s tour de force with the CSO is Australian-based pianist Simon Tedeschi. Described by critics as “electrifying” and “mesmerizing”, Tedeschi’s recordings and performances of Gershwin’s music have attracted worldwide acclaim. Composed at the end of 1945, American composer Aaron Copland’s third symphony was also his last. Inspired by the euphoric spirit of his country in the immediate months following the end of World War II, Copland intended it as tribute to those who had sacrificed most during this period. He commented, “It was the common man, after all, who was doing all the dirty work in the war and the army. He deserved a fanfare.”

Saturday 11th November, 7:30pm Air Force Museum of NZ, Wigram

With soaring melodies, energetic and balletic rhythms and resounding brass fanfares, Copland’s Symphony No. 3 continues to be considered the finest American symphony ever written.

The Karawhiua! Let’s Play! Programme

• Working with inmates at local prisons on music projects.

In this innovative and highly acclaimed school residency programme, ensembles of CSO players work in primary schools with students on projects designed to meet the school’s needs and expectations. The residency, which spans several days, culminates in a concert given by students for their school mates, teachers, parents and wider community. Projects may include playing drums by reading a musical score, making an instrument, producing an integrated performance piece of dance and music, rhymes with actions, conducting rhythmic speech, creating and playing from a graphic musical score, learning to play percussion instruments, and learning to tell a story through music and dance.

We will also be developing our Christchurch and South Island

Ambassador Programme

Island, including: • Lively interactive instrument demonstrations by ensembles of CSO musicians at pre, primary and high schools in and around Christchurch and throughout the South Island. • The CSO’s acclaimed Karawhiua! Let’s Play! residency programme. • CSO ensemble performances at retirement villages, libraries, and for community groups.

musical community through: • Tutoring and mentoring young musicians in our community. • Composition workshops for high school students. • The Ambassador Programme for high school students. • Collaborations with other artists in the local community. • Presentations with demonstrations by ensembles of CSO musicians for NCEA music students. • Internships for young musicians with the CSO. • Masterclasses with CSO players and guest soloists.

20

This rapidly developing and expanding programme now involves 29 students from 15 high schools and intermediate schools around Christchurch and Canterbury. The ambassadors, chosen by the heads of music at their schools, attend CSO concerts for free and there are many opportunities to meet with players, soloists and conductors. The aim is to expose young people to orchestral music, form lasting relationships with them and develop their leadership potential. In addition, ambassadors can select concerts they wish to encourage their fellow students within their schools to attend as well as take part in exclusive behind-the-scenes tours and workshops for different aspects of concert business.

Inter-Genre Collaborations

CSO Internship

Live orchestral sound can add an extra dimension to other art forms and we enjoy collaborating with dancers and other artists in new and innovative projects. Collaborations have included performance projects with Christchurch-based integrated dance company Jolt Dance, a workshop with members of the local Blind community, and strings for Buskaid.

With the support of Alison Barwick, the CSO is delighted to offer a new internship programme for young musicians to give them an opportunity to have a stimulating, supportive and positive experience as performers in the orchestra and to help them develop their skills as musicians. As part of the programme, interns will have the opportunity to observe the workings of a professional orchestra, rehearse with the orchestra and perform in two CSO concerts.

After several successful collaborations, including the very acclaimed production of Fish, we are delighted to work with Jolt Dance on their “Move” project, a training programme for people with disabilities to help them to find their own creative voices as dance facilitators. The programme also trains people who want to work in dance with people with disabilities. This year, the programme will focus on learning about how to work with live musicians and it will give participants the experience of directing musicians during live performances.

Entry is open to musicians under the age of 25. For more information, please contact CSO Community Engagement Programme Leader Cathy Irons. This programme is in addition to the Elaine P. Snowden Scholarship, available to University of Canterbury music performance students. This scholarship is administered by the University of Canterbury Foundation.

Play Your Best The CSO will be running a series of workshops on practice and performance techniques for music examinations in high schools. During the workshops, students will get to explore the best ways to prepare for an examination and how to enjoy the performance experience in exam conditions. “A wonderfully inspiring workshop to get your students thinking critically about how and why they practice and perform.” - Kate Coghlan, Head of Music, Linwood College

Spring Quartet Music Beyond the Bars In partnership with Pathway Reintegration, we will be developing a programme with inmates in local prisons. A team of CSO musicians, with expert advice from Pathway, will create projects with the aim of encouraging inmates to try something new, develop confidence, and learn a new skill along the way. The projects will have a particular focus on developing life skills that will aid inmates in their journey towards reintegrating with society, allowing them to gain a sense of belonging in a wider community, and communication and self-expression through music.

Continuing on from 2016, an ensemble CSO players will be visiting high school music classes to discuss and analyse with students Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, focusing particularly on the movement “Spring”, the musical imagery used, baroque instruments, the context in which it was composed and the life of Vivaldi.

Composition workshops Our composition workshops aim to give young musicians and aspiring composers a good foundation in the concepts behind writing a piece of music. The workshops are designed to introduce them to basic ideas and knowledge regarding composition, inspiring them to take these building blocks to create their own soundscapes.

The course will culminate in a performance within their unit for other inmates, friends and family.

The CSO would like to thank Guoan Tian for his generous support of the Community Engagement initiatives in Christchurch.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed some of the most memorable music ever written. While not always understood by the audience of his day, who grappled to appreciate his radical ideas, his music is loved today for the immense joy and emotional depth it conveys.

Saturday st 1 April, 7:30pm Charles Luney Auditorium

Mozart elevated the concerto to a new level and his piano concertos were especially highly regarded for their sophistication and expressive qualities. Despite being composed only one year apart, the two concertos featured in this concert demonstrate deeply contrasting characters. K. 466 is stormy and tension-filled while K. 488 is cheerfully optimistic. Michael Houstoun is one of New Zealand’s most highly regarded musicians. Born in Timaru, Houstoun achieved placings in three of the world’s most prestigious piano competitions – Van Cliburn, Leeds and Tchaikovsky. He performs with all of New Zealand’s leading musical ensembles as well as presenting regular solo recital tours and recording.

Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt Described by Mstislav Rostropovich as “one of the leading cellists of his generation, in our time”, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt was the 1st prize winner of the inaugural Christchurch-based Adam International Cello Competition. Since then he has become a highly sought after soloist, chamber musician and conductor, appearing with some of the finest orchestras in Europe including the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in Paris and Prague Philharmonia. Schmidt will perform Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C major and lead the orchestra in performances of two works by the great romantic composers – Mendelssohn and Schumann. Whilst holidaying in Scotland, Mendelssohn was especially moved by the extraordinary scenery of the Hebrides. The resulting atmospheric overture captures the dramatic sea, sky and land formations of the region. Schumann’s fourth and final symphony was composed during one of the happiest periods of his life, shortly following his marriage to his beloved Clara. The symphony traverses darkly dramatic moments, a lyrical and tender romance, and concludes with an exultant and vibrant finale.

Saturday 10th June, 6.30pm Great Hall, Arts Centre

A Royal Feast Handel’s Water Music was first performed in 1717 to accompany King George l and his entourage during a royal cruise up and down the Thames . This year’s concert and dinner will celebrate all the magnificence of the English Baroque era set in the exquisite surroundings of the Great Hall. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Colossus of the Baroque’, Handel’s Water Music Suite is among the most celebrated of his instrumental works. Under the baton of our Chief Conductor, Benjamin Northey, the rich sounds of the orchestra will be interspersed with a sumptuous three-course meal from Continental accompanied by Pegasus Bay's matching wines. Seats are limited, and in 2016 this concert and dinner sold out well in advance so we recommend you book early.

Membership of Friends of CSO is open to all those who share a common interest in orchestral music, whether it be the great classics or songs from the shows. Our emphasis is on sharing enriching experiences through orchestral music, getting to know the players, others in the CSO family and each other.

Friends of CSO These are just some of the benefits you can expect: • By joining the Friends of CSO, you will be offered additional discounts on season tickets. • Discounted concert programmes. • Deepen your engagement with the orchestra with regular opportunities to meet the CSO players. • Meet new people who share the enriching experience of orchestral music in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. • Members-only invitations to selected Open Rehearsals, get the behind-the-scenes look at how concerts are prepared. • Pre-order interval drinks at some concert venues and socialise with other members. • Mid-week talks by the players and visiting performers. • See the award-winning Community Engagement Programme in action. We are also committed to supporting the orchestra financially. We welcome your donations which will go towards specific projects such as the purchase of scores for the CSO Library. There’s nothing quite like a party with all your friends, so we will hold just one major fundraising event each year to celebrate our orchestra and being a Friend of CSO. We invite you to join the circle of Friends of CSO. Annual subscriptions are very affordable at $50 for adults and $30 for seniors (over 65 years).

For nearly sixty years, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra has played an integral role in the rhythm and cultural fabric of Christchurch and its wider community. During that time, we have reached many thousands of people through our music.

Supporting the Orchestra As well as performing a varied concert season each year, the CSO also offers many other ways for audiences, in particular young people, to experience the joy of live music. Our extensive Community Engagement Programme works with more than 20,000 participants each year, offering a range of workshops, masterclasses, performances, residencies and mentoring programmes, free of charge. From the classics to the cutting edge, the CSO is a dynamic and versatile orchestra that reflects the energy and rhythm of our city today. We are passionate that the people of Christchurch can hear thrilling live performances of orchestral music performed by musicians that work and live in the heart of their community. The CSO is grateful to receive funding from Central and Local Government as well as a number of loyal and supportive companies, organisations and individuals. This, however, together with income from ticket sales, is still not enough to sustain the full compass of work that the CSO undertakes. There are a number of ways you can help. Your support ensures that the CSO will remain a vital cultural asset to the city of Christchurch.

“Music has always been important to me and my late husband, our children and grandchildren. I have watched young musicians from primary school through to secondary school until some have joined the CSO, and I always buy a season ticket to the concerts. So it seemed logical to put my money towards supporting the local talent. In those years, the standard has improved tremendously and I feel rewarded for the donation.” PHILIPPA BATES, BASSOON PLAYER PARTNER

Player Partnership Programme We invite you to join us on our journey and enjoy a closer connection to the CSO by directly investing in your orchestra through the Player Partnership Programme. The programme entails support of a player position of choice for a period of one year, during which time you will be acknowledged in all CSO concert programmes and on our website. You will also be invited to a regular programme of events including open rehearsals, post-concert receptions and the annual Player Partnership Programme Gala. The Player Partnership Progamme is open to individuals, groups or businesses so that support can be tailored to suit your means. Create a syndicate with friends or colleagues and each contribute a little, or support a player partner in full. Whether you can contribute $200 or $4000, it all makes a difference in ensuring the future of the CSO and the many community benefits resulting from our work.

Music Library Every year, the CSO purchases scores to continue the expansion of our library. This is a very special contribution you can make that goes on giving throughout the life of the orchestra. Score donations are acknowledged in concert programmes during the season.

General Donation We are working towards a sustainable future for the CSO and the wider arts scene in the South Island. Every gift you make gets us closer to this goal and will always be put to good use. All donations over $5 are tax deductible and will be acknowledged with a receipt.

The CSO Foundation Trust, created in 1994, is dedicated to securing the future of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. The Foundation is independent of the CSO Trust which governs the CSO but works in close harmony with the

CSO Foundation Trust board to support the orchestra.

PHONE 03 943 7797 sarah.bramhall@cso.co.nz

The Foundation has three major projects: 1. The Foundation’s vision is to grow the endowment fund to a sufficient size that the income derived, after reinvestment to maintain the capital base, provides the orchestra with supplementary funding from time to time. 2. Providing a permanent home for the orchestra in Christchurch in conjunction with the artistic plan for our rebuilt city. 3. Purchasing instruments the orchestra needs. The CSO Foundation is the proud supporter of CSO Concertmaster Martin Riseley. The CSO Foundation Trust is registered with the Charities Commission and gifts to the Foundation may be tax deductible in accordance with taxation legislation. Gifts to the Foundation of any size will make a difference to securing the future of music in Christchurch and the South Island. Please consider making the CSO Foundation Trust a beneficiary of your estate and leave a musical legacy for the orchestra.
