A message

from the

Chief Conductor Our 2018 season is an opportunity to celebrate the CSO’s 60th birthday! This is a remarkable accomplishment for the entire CSO family to cherish and reflect on with great pride. It’s also a chance to perform music which marks this milestone whilst also looking to the future with a sense of optimism and excitement. The CSO journey has had its fair share of challenges that have played a part in shaping our character and identity. Without the ongoing support of you, our beloved CSO audience, none of our accomplishments would have been possible. Any success we have is shared by all involved with the CSO, but especially with you! We love performing for you and are committed to bringing you the highest possible musical experiences every year. 2018 is particularly poignant as it will be the last year where most of our concerts will be presented in the Air Force Museum. This has been a pivotal relationship for the CSO during these past five years. The first postquake CSO performance featured Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony and we can’t think of a more appropriate way to open this year’s Masterworks series.

These concerts feature much loved repertoire by Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Grieg, Bruch, Ravel, Rachmaninov, Vaughan-Williams, Shostakovich, Prokofiev and Mussorgsky. We are also very proud to perform outstanding compositions by New Zealand composers Lyell Cresswell, John Young and Leonie Holmes, as well as classic 20th century works by Peter Maxwell-Davies, award winning composer Bernard Hermann and Freidrich Gulda. In 2018, the CSO welcomes returning New Zealand soloists Natalia Lomeiko, Michael Houstoun, Ashley Brown, Jenny Wollerman, and our own Helen Webby. We also welcome British violinist Andrew Haveron as well as the debut of three outstanding young pianists: Tony Chen Lin, Nikolay Khozyainov and Jayson Gillham. Soloists of this calibre are not to be missed! It is a particular delight to continue our successful Beca Artist Series with two concerts; one directed by our star concertmaster Martin Riseley and the other by prodigious Israeli violinist and conductor Shlomo Mintz. These concerts promise to be a real treat. The popular CSO Presents series gives the orchestra a chance to reach out to a wide range of music lovers. From a brilliant concert of Kurt Weill with an all-star NZ cast led by Luke Di Somma, through the Music of Moana, Last Night of the Proms, A Festive Christmas and Music Trails through the Library. We even have a concert of NZ pop music from the 80’s which will no doubt require some dancing in the aisles. The 60th birthday dinner and PwC Opera at Pegasus Bay will also be special events so book early to not miss out. We hope you are as excited about the 2018 season as we are. As we all know, 60 is the new 40, so it is with a very youthful exuberance that I invite you to join us, the CSO family, in 2018 and continue to share in our special journey together.

A message from the CEO In 2018, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra marks its 60th Anniversary. We’re incredibly proud to have reached this significant milestone and invite you to join us for a year-long musical celebration. From our initial beginnings as the John Ritchie Strings to the present day, the CSO has been built through the dedicated hard work of many, many people; musicians, audiences, staff, trustees, sponsors and donors. The orchestra has flourished because of the service of this passionate group and on behalf of the organisation today, I thank them all. The orchestra has become a 21st century community asset for the people of our region with a reach that extends beyond the concert stage to engage with new audiences and different parts of the community. Through our broad range of concerts and award winning community engagement programme, we bring music into the lives of over 100,000 Cantabrians each year. I would like to offer a special thank you to the people who appear in this brochure. These people play a special part in this orchestra in many different ways, through attending concerts, playing in the orchestra, volunteering and encouraging us. They are some of our passionate supporters, some of whom have been carrying the CSO torch since 1960. There has never been a better time to subscribe to the CSO and, with sold-out concerts during 2017, I encourage you to do so. Community Engagement Through our Community Engagement Programme, we seek to enrich the lives of our community in diverse and innovative ways, including hands-on experiences, participant-led collaborations and active learning.

KARAWHIUA! LET'S PLAY!

ENCOUNTER

Karawhiua! Let’s Play! is our critically acclaimed school residency programme, in which CSO musicians embed themselves in one school over the course of a week to work with students from all year groups to develop a variety of music-based projects that are presented to the school community in a final concert.

The Encounter Programme provides opportunities for people to experience and interact with live music in many ways. Primary School Visits Throughout the year, CSO musicians visit primary schools around Christchurch and the greater Christchurch area to perform for students, demonstrate their instruments, and introduce the various elements of music making. The students can ask questions, have a go on the instruments and conduct the musicians.

Students develop confidence, concentration and creative enterprise in addition to teamwork skills. Student leadership and creative input are actively encouraged.

Music Trails

In partnership with the Christchurch City Libraries, Music Trails is a series of concerts held in different libraries across Christchurch. CSO wind, string, brass, percussion and mixed ensembles visit the city libraries every month to perform for children and their caregivers in free concerts that are filled with dancing, singing and storytelling. This is a wonderful opportunity for our youngest citizens to experience live classical music for the first time. In 2018, we are expanding the series of concerts to include libraries in the Selwyn District.

Rest Home Recitals CSO ensembles visit retirement and lifestyle villages, including homes for those suffering from dementia. Performances include a range of popular classics as well as lots of opportunities for residents to meet and chat with the musicians.

PLATFORM Our Platform Programme takes music into correctional facilities, providing participants with opportunities to develop new skills through music and creative expression. In 2017, in partnership with Pathway Reintegration, the CSO launched a pilot programme at Christchurch Men's Prison Youth Offenders Unit to encourage the young men to try something new, build confidence and develop communication skills. Over the course of the week, twelve participants of the Karawhiua Arts Programme, aged 17 to 20, learned ukulele, guitar and percussion skills including learning how to read music, and presented their work in a concert at the end of the week for their whanau, peers, and corrections officers. One corrections officer said, "I’ve been working here for 18 years and that’s the best bit of stuff I’ve seen from young men [in the unit]."

Conducting Workshops

This programme provides opportunities for musicians of all ages and abilities to develop their musical skills and knowledge.

Our conducting workshops provide professional development for community orchestra conductors, music teachers and emerging young conductors. These workshops are led by CSO conductors including our Chief Conductor, Benjamin Northey.

Masterclasses

Composition Workshops

Every year the CSO hosts masterclasses for students, their teachers and the wider musical community by visiting soloists and critically acclaimed musicians from all around the globe. Such artists have included oboist Gordon Hunt, pianist Stephen De Pledge and violinist Ilya Gringolts.

Our composition workshops introduce young musicians and aspiring composers to basic composition techniques, inspiring them to take these building blocks to create their own soundscapes. The students have the opportunity to compose a short piece which is performed by CSO musicians. Orchestral Sectionals Orchestral sectionals are just one of the many ways we share our love and excitement for playing in the CSO with the rest of our community. Not only do we give advice and share tips and tricks, but we also build a lasting rapport with musicians and performers in our city.

Secondary Schools Orchestra Festival In association with the Canterbury Westland Secondary Music Teachers Association the CSO presents the annual Secondary Schools Orchestra Festival, a two day event that supports and encourages orchestral music making within our high schools. Elaine P Snowden Scholarship This scholarship is available to University of Canterbury students and supports them with opportunities to perform in selected CSO concerts during a 12 month period. This scholarship is administered by the University of Canterbury Foundation. Internship Programme Up to two young musicians are selected annually to receive lessons, mentoring and rehearsal access to the CSO with the aim of introducing them to the professional orchestral environment. This programme is generously supported by Alison Barwick.

FLOURISH This is a new area of focus under development for the CSO, emphasising health and wellbeing through music. This programme will have two key areas of attention – youth mental health and dementia.

Back by popular demand, we’re delighted to be including, once again in our concert season, an afternoon of magnificent music accompanied by fine wine and food, set in the idyllic surroundings of the Pegasus Bay Winery. PwC Opera at Pegasus Bay is the ideal end-of-holiday treat and, just before Waitangi Day, makes the perfect starter to a summer weekend in Canterbury. In partnership with New Zealand Opera we bring you some of the leading operatic voices from Australasia, who will perform an array of arias and music from world-famous operas, backed by the power of a full orchestra under the baton of Tahu Matheson. Bring your picnic, chairs and rugs and settle in for a glorious afternoon. An outstanding selection of Pegasus Bay wines along with other beverages and food can be purchased on site. Pegasus Bay Restaurant is also offering the opportunity to indulge with a threecourse feasting menu. This can be purchased through the CSO and is in addition to the concert ticket. Coach transport to and from the city is also available.

invite you to celebrate with us at its premiere. We welcome back internationally renowned violinist Natalia Lomeiko to perform Bruch’s luxuriant Concerto No 1 in G minor. Said by Beethoven to be his favourite, his third symphony is an astonishing piece of music that takes us on a profound and ultimately uplifting emotional journey. Not only was the symphony revolutionary in its musical context, but it was originally intended to celebrate Napoleon Bonaparte and his stance against political tyranny. Upon Napoleon declaring himself Emperor, Beethoven famously scratched out the dedication to Napoleon and renamed the symphony The Heroic (Eroica) instead.

He considered it to be “the best thing I ever composed or shall compose”, which proved to be sadly prophetic, as Tchaikovsky died of cholera shortly after the symphony’s first performance. Ravel was a great admirer of jazz and what he described as “its rich and diverting rhythm”. Imbued with jazz influences and overflowing with exuberance, Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major also features moments of languid expressiveness and refined elegance. Currently based in Berlin, New Zealand pianist Tony Chen Lin joins the CSO to perform Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major. Leonie Holmes’ Ancient Rhythms was inspired by the poem “The Journey” by Tessa Stephens and features powerful percussion and dramatic orchestral interjections.

In 1787, Mozart visited Prague, also known as the Golden City, where he received a rock-star welcome following the tremendous success of his recent opera, The Marriage of Figaro. Admired and celebrated, Mozart was the toast of the town. In between the parties and elaborate dinners, Mozart held the first performance of his 38th Symphony, “Prague”, which astounded audiences and critics with its innovation and brilliance. Inspired by a trip to Las Vegas during a BBC Philharmonic tour to the USA, Peter Maxwell Davies’ “Mavis in Las Vegas” is a brash and sassy tribute to the Sin City.

The symphony concludes with a triumphant, rousing march. Officials regarded it as a celebration of Stalin’s regime, while the audience heard it as a coded protest of the ruling system and responded with a 30 minute standing ovation. The New York Times wrote, “The Music World is taking note of Nikolay Khozyainov’s stunning virtuosity and prodigious technique.” Twenty-five year-old Russian pianist Khozyainov was the youngest finalist in the International Chopin Piano Competition and has delighted audiences around the world with sold out recitals and concerto engagements. He joins the CSO to perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Bernard Herrmann created one of the most recognisable film scores of all time when he wrote the music for Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 movie, Psycho. Credited by Hitchcock as one of the factors that led to the success of the film, Herrmann’s music has also enjoyed enduring success in the concert hall.

Gulda’s Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra was commissioned and premiered by Heinrich Schiff in 1981 and was described by critics as “a knock-out”. It features swinging big band riffs, melodious folk tunes, classical gestures and virtuostic cadenza passages. Performing this tour de force, cellist Ashley Brown joins the CSO for the New Zealand premiere of this concerto.

At the outbreak of the First World War, both composers enlisted for active duty, serving in ambulance brigades. Profoundly affected by his experiences, Ravel composed Le Tombeau de Couperin as an homage to his friends who had lost their lives during the conflict. Rather than being a sombre piece, Le Tombeau is a light-hearted, virtuosic work with Ravel commenting, “the dead are sad enough, in their eternal silence.” Vaughan Williams also sought to express his harrowing war time experiences through music, composing what is considered to be his greatest work, the Pastoral Symphony. Incorporating a trumpet solo inspired by an army bugler he had heard practising, it also includes echoes of The Lark Ascending and The Last Post. Sydney Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster and former Concertmaster of the BBC Symphony Andrew Haveron joins the CSO to perform Vaughan Williams’ idyllic The Lark Ascending.

Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Inspired by images created by friend and artist Victor Hartmann, the brilliant orchestration of Ravel takes us into the peculiar world of gnomes, down into the depths of the Parisian Catacombs, before reaching The Great Gate of Kiev complete with pealing bells. Awarded first prize in the 2014 Montreal International Music Competition, Australian/UK pianist Jayson Gillham performs Rachmaninov’s astounding second piano concerto. Considered by many to be one of the greatest piano concertos of all time, it is a masterpiece of lyricism and technical brilliance.

Music for the people From the decadence of the Weimar Republic in 1920s Germany to the glittering lights of New York’s Broadway, Kurt Weill’s music was a sensation. A stellar cast of Amelia Berry, Phoebe Hurst and Todd Emerson will perform Weill’s own classics “Mac the Knife”, “Alabama Song” and “Pirate Jenny” as well as music inspired by him including songs from “Cabaret”, “The Cradle Will Rock” and many more. Their music for Moana reached No. 1 on the Billboard Soundtrack Album charts and remained there for many months. New Zealand violinist Martin Riseley won the TVNZ 1988 Young Musicians’ Competition and went on to study at Juilliard School with Dorothy DeLay, where he completed Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts Degrees. Supporting the Orchestra We exist for our community, but we can’t do it without you. In 2018, the CSO is celebrating its 60th year and we are proud to be the orchestra of this city. Today we present more than 20 staged concerts every year and operate an extensive Community Engagement Programme that brings music into the lives of thousands of Cantabrians. We also provide the music for many other local and national organisations, including the Royal New Zealand Ballet, New Zealand Opera, the New Zealand International Film Festival and Christchurch City Choir. Our orchestra was born of the support of people like you; people who believed Christchurch deserved access to world class arts and culture at a local level. Together we have achieved so much over the years and now the future is brighter than ever. 2018 is a pivotal point in the CSO’s history. Not only does it mark an auspicious jubilee year but also the cusp of the CSO’s re-homing in the Christchurch Town Hall, bringing the orchestra back into the heart of the city. Our vision for the future is to find further ways to work with the wider community, using music as a medium for achieving positive outcomes for all. We are well on our way to realising this, and already the CSO offers many other opportunities for our community, particularly young people and those who may not otherwise have access to live music, the chance to engage with our performances and a huge array of educational activities. Our Community Engagement Programme reaches more than 12,000 participants throughout Canterbury each year, in pre, primary and high schools, prisons, lifestyle villages, libraries and community halls, offering free-of-charge programmes. We love providing outstanding musical experiences to the people of Christchurch and many other community benefits. However, orchestras cannot survive on ticket sales alone, especially as we strive to keep prices as accessible as possible. Your help makes all the difference. There are a number of ways you can help. Your support ensures the CSO will remain a vital cultural and educational asset to Christchurch and its people.

CSO Foundation Trust The CSO Foundation Trust, created in 1994, is dedicated to securing the future of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. The Foundation is independent of the CSO Trust which governs the CSO but works in close harmony with the Board to support the orchestra.

The Foundation has three major projects: 1. The Foundation’s vision is to grow the endowment fund to a sufficient size that the income derived, after reinvestment to maintain the capital base, provides the orchestra with supplementary funding from time to time. 2. Providing a permanent home for the orchestra in Christchurch in conjunction with the artistic plan for our rebuilt city. 3. Purchasing instruments the orchestra needs. The CSO Foundation Trust is the proud supporter of CSO Concertmaster Martin Riseley. The Masters

Flexi Pass

Receive all seven concerts in the Lamb & Hayward Masterworks series for $210.00. You will automatically become a CSO Season Member and receive these additional benefits.

If you wish to attend CSO concerts throughout the year but are unable to commit to dates just yet, the CSO’s new Flexi Pass is right for you. For $185 and 10 days’ notice, you can attend up to four concerts* within the CSO 2018 concert season. You automatically become a CSO Season Member and receive the following benefits.

• You can purchase extra tickets to your season with concerts from any of the other CSO concert series. • If you are booking more than two additional concerts, take advantage of the Assorted Flavours package. • Priority reserved seating. • Present your membership privilege card at CSO selfpresented concerts and receive discounted programmes. • Invitations to Season Member events including the annual Cocktails with the Chief. • Town Hall Priority Seating – by subscribing in 2018 you will jump to the front of the queue for priority seating when you re-subscribe in 2019 just in time for the re-opening of the Town Hall.

Single Ticket If you would like to beat the rush and book tickets to any of the concerts within the CSO’s 2018 season before the opening of our general sales on the 1st February 2018, you can make a booking online at www.cso.co.nz or fill in the form attached in this brochure. If you are booking after the 1st February 2018, you can do so via www.cso.co.nz or through the CSO approved ticketing agent for each concert, which is indicated within the brochure.

If you are a member of the Friends of CSO, you are eligible for an additional 5% discount off the discounted price for the Assorted Flavours, Flexi Pass and Single Ticket Bookings.
