This sale includes Pacific artefacts from the estate of Leonard Owen Morgan, collected during the 1920s and 30s. The Fijian artefacts were collected by the current owner’s grandfather, Leonard Owen Morgan, during the late 1920s to early 1930s. During this time he was principal of Ratu Kadavulevu School in Lodoni. The school was established in 1924 by Ratu Kadavulevu, the Vunivalu of Bau (the paramount chief of the Kabuna Confederacy, part of Fiji’s House of Chiefs). The school was, and to this day is still, a boarding school, with many of the alumni being chieftains’ sons. Notable alumni include Laisenia Qarase, Prime Minister of Fiji from 2000 to 2006, and current military regime leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama. When the boys graduated from the school the parents would often bring gifts for the principal, some of which form part of the collection.

CHIEFLY TAIAHA The taiaha is a traditional Maori weapon usually between five to six feet (1.5 to 1.8 m) in length. It is a wooden close-quarters weapon used for short sharp strikes or stabbing thrusts. It has three main parts. The arero (tongue) used for stabbing the opponent and parrying. The upoko (head) the base from which the tongue protrudes and ate (liver) the long flat blade used for striking and parrying. Mau rakau is the martial art that teaches the use of the taiaha and other Maori weapons in combat. As with other martial arts students spend years mastering the skills of timing balance and co-ordination necessary to wield the weapon effectively. The weapon is also widely known due to its use in the wero — the traditional Maori challenge. The upoko in this example is adorned with a tauri (collar) of muka bound material decorated with traditional feathers which leads to the tassels of which form the awe. The taiaha was a prestigious act which reflected the status and mana of the chief whom this taiaha once belonged. L.1700mm, W.88mm. Y Registration pending $5,000 - 10,000 See Illustration

IMPORTANT HISTORICAL DOCUMENT THE WILL AND TESTAMENT OF CHIEF MANIAPOTO Rewi Manga dated 20th July 1893 Thomas Gresham Solicitor Te Awamutu. (C.1815–94).War chief of Ngati Maniapoto and defender of Orakau pa. Rewi Maniapoto was born about 1815 and was the son of Te Ngohi, a high-born chief of Ngati Maniapoto, and Pareteka. Through his father he claimed descent from Hoturoa. In 1831 Te Ngohi was one of the chiefs of Te Wherowhero’s taua (war party) which captured Pukerangiora, and Rewi accompanied his father on this campaign. In the 1850s Rewi became prominent among the leaders of the “King” movement and, at the meeting at Ngaruawahia in April 1858 when Potatau was installed, he ceremonially hoisted the “King’s” flag. On the outbreak of war in Taranaki Rewi led a Ngati Maniapoto taua to Wiremu Kingi’s aid. The combined tribes fought with such determination that, on 27 June 1860, they gained a resounding victory over the Imperial troops at Puke-ta-Kauere. On 23 January 1862, however, they were decisively defeated in the attack on the Huirangi (No. 3) Redoubt. Rewi then returned to Kihikihi, where he preached a crusade against the Government. He attracted a good deal of support among the “Kingites”, and his impassioned orations on the subject gradually eclipsed the more moderate counsels of Wiremu Tamihana Te Waharoa. In 1861 Sir George Grey sent John Gorst to Te Awamutu as Magistrate and Civil Commissioner. Although Gorst was treated kindly his authority was not recognised. At the Government’s direction Gorst established a trade school and printed a newspaper, Pihoihoi (The sparrow which sitteth alone on the house top) which was intended to counteract the King party’s publication Te Hokioi (a mythical bird, never seen but known only by its scream). Gorst’s editorial attitude was far from compromising and he incensed the “King” leaders by the vigour of his articles. Rewi raised a war party and, on 23 March 1863, expelled Gorst and his press from the Waikato. When the Waikato War broke out Rewi took the field as supreme commander of Tawhiao’s forces. From the outset he made a determined attempt to take the war into the enemy’s territory. His first engagement was fought near Papakura and, afterwards, his forces occupied the densely wooded Hunua Ranges. From this base he carried out a series of raids in the Auckland district. When he was dislodged from the Hunuas, Rewi established his headquarters on Pukekawa Hill at Meremere. There his forces held up General Cameron’s advance for three months until newly acquired gunboats enabled the great Meremere pa to be outflanked. Owing to a breach of Maori etiquette by the defenders Rewi did not participate in the defence of Rangiriri pa but occupied a conical hill in the swamp to the south-east. By the time the Imperial troops fought their way to Te Awamutu the “King” tribes had received reinforcements from the Ngati Raukawa and Tuhoe tribes. Confident of their ability to continue the war, the chiefs insisted upon building a pa at Orakau – about 2 miles east of Kihikihi – where they first met Rewi. Rewi himself had doubts about the strategic value of the Orakau site, but he yielded to their enthusiasm. Early in the morning of 31 March 1864 General Cameron’s forces reached Orakau and the siege commenced. By the morning of the second day the Maoris’ ammunition was running low, water supplies were exhausted, and the attacking force’s siege guns were in action. Early in the afternoon of the third day, because he was

impressed by the defenders’ courage, Cameron sent William Mair forward with a flag of truce to urge the pa to surrender. Rewi replied, “Kaore e mau te rongo, ake, ake!” (“Peace shall never be made, never, never!”) This was conveyed to Mair by Hauraki Tonganui, a Ngati Tuwharetoa chief who was noted for his stentorian voice, and who had been conversing with Mair while Rewi considered the message. He used Rewi’s words which have now passed into legend; and, immediately afterwards, these were also shouted in unison by the defenders. Mair then asked that the women and children be sent out of the pa. While Rewi was considering this, Ahumai Te Paerata, a tall handsome young woman, daughter of the old West Taupo chief Te Paerata, stood up and replied on behalf of the women: “Ki te mate nga tane, me mate ano nga wahine me nga tamariki.” (“If the men die, the women and children must die also.”) Shortly afterwards the battle was renewed, and when Cameron’s men captured an outwork flanking the main pa, the survivors made good their escape, hotly pursued by the troops. After Orakau, Rewi retreated into the King Country, where all pursuit ceased. In later years this forbearance paid dividends, for he became a useful friend in the complicated MaoriPakeha relations in the 1870s and 1880s. In 1869 Rewi welcomed Sir Donald McLean on his visit to the Waikato. And in the same year, when Te Kooti sought Tawhiao’s help, Rewi was sent as an observer to accompany him to Taupo. He remained with Te Kooti until his defeat at Te Porere when he returned to the King Country and advised the “King” against intervention. In 1873 he intervened to save the life of James Mackay, whose investigations into Timothy Sullivan’s murder brought him into disfavour with the “Kingites”. In 1879, at the invitation of John Sheehan, the Native Minister, Rewi visited Auckland, where he received a hero’s welcome. He returned to the Waikato in the train of Governor Sir Hercules Robinson. In 1883 Rewi supported Wahanui in his campaign to prevent land selling, the sale of liquor, and the spread of immorality in the King Country. In 1889 he was one of the older chiefs who were influenced by Te Mahuki’s Messianic prophecies. He visited Auckland for the provincial jubilee celebrations in 1890, and thereafter lived quietly at Kihikihi. In his last years he had indifferent health. Seddon visited him in March 1894. A month later a public monument was unveiled at Kihikihi in Rewi’s honour. He died two months later, on 21 June 1894. Although short and slender in stature, Rewi excelled as a military tactician, and in battle forswore the traditional Maori practices, choosing rather to abide by the Pakeha rules of war. Writing of Rewi in 1888 E. W. Payton said that he was “the most courteous and dignified old gentleman he had ever met of a so called savage tribe”. H.380mm, W.485mm. FINE TOKOTOKO c 1870, BY JACOB WILLIAM HEBERLEY (1849–1906) OF TE ATI AWA WELLINGTON DESCENT (Y9510) Carved with highly stylised, tattooed male and female figures standing in full relief and surmounting a manaia head with bulbous tongue and numerous teeth above incised kowhaiwhai design. The upper male figure with naturalistic tattooed head and shell-inlaid eyes extends into a curved handle decorated with conforming kowhaiwhai and terminating in a stylised manaia with paua-shell eyes. The surface decoration of this very-accomplished carving is extremely intricate and finely finished; its sophisticated rauponga and pataki notches illustrate Jacob’s sureness of line and deftness of chisel cuts. Having lived some of his early life in Rotorua, he was one of an elite group of late-19thcentury master carvers which included Anaha Te Rahui and Patoromu Tamatea; his earliest work even predated that of another, Tene Waitere. These influential carvers facilitated the early transition of their indigenous tribal art to modern Maori art as we know it today. As European ways merged with the tribal world, Heberley’s work met the needs of both cultures; much of it was commissioned by the New Zealand Government for gifts for visiting royalty. His work was well known to European dignitaries such as Sir Walter Buller, Alexander Turnbull, Captain Gilbert Mair and Lord Ranfurly, and also accepted by many prominent Maori among tribal groups such as Ngati Kahungunu, Ngati Toa, Te Ati Awa and even Tuhoe. Kumete, waka huia and tokotoko were created for symbolic or ceremonial purposes in a new Europeandominated art market where Maori were minor participants within dominant pakeha culture. Jacob Heberley played a major role in the acceptance of contemporary Maori carving as a powerful expression of New Zealand national identity. A similar tokotoko was commissioned by Richard John Seddon for presentation to King Edward at his coronation in 1902; it is now held in the Royal collection. Heberley’s works are represented in major ethnographical museums in Australasia, Europe and USA. Note: source references authored by Roger Neich, including records of the Auckland Institute and Museum. L.866mm, W.120mm. Thomas Webster collection. EARLY KAITAKA PAEPAEROA CLOAK (Y16882) Kaitaka is the name given to the prestigious cloaks that were recorded and collected by early European explorers. They were woven using unbeaten New Zealand flax; thus, the flax was allowed to retain its shining quality. The muka selected from the harakeke plants was prepared with the greatest of care and attention to ritual. The complexity and elegance of the taniko borders are unsurpassed by any other Maori cloak forms. Featuring vertical aho, this rare form of chiefly cloak is created from one side to the other and then turned when it is worn. Note that the aho appears as vertical as opposed to horizontal. There are areas of ‘V’ shaping (aho poka – short weft) at shoulder and waist level. The taniko is in brownblack and undyed muka. The vertical borders show complex triangular motifs and interchanging parallel borders of light and dark brown. Brightly dyed wool has been added later in the kauko (side) vertical taniko. The remu (bottom) taniko border is extremely fine and complex reflecting the work of a master craftswoman. This form of kaitaka became obsolete around 1840 as another cloak style known as korowai grew in popularity and replaced it. Overall condition of this rare example is excellent; some conservation work is apparent. A full condition report is available on request. L.1750mm, W.1370mm. Believed to have been collected by Sir Joseph Banks, 1st Baronet, UK (1743– 1820). Reputedly in the collection of the Lieutenant-General Augustus Henry Lane Fox Pitt Rivers (1827–1900). Reputedly in the collection of Captain A W F Fuller, UK (1882–1961). Purchased at Philips, London, circa 1982–1985. Collection of Paul Hughes, London. KAHU HURUHURU – PRESTIGIOUS FEATHER CLOAK (Y3636) Introduced in the second half of the 19th century, the kahu huruhuru celebrated the prestigious nature of the Polynesian cloak with the use of high-status bird species such as the kereru, kakariki, kaka and tui. Notably, kahu huruhuru are worked in an upside-down manner with the geometric workings starting from the bottom; this suggests they are a development from the orthodox korowai cloak with even earlier roots reaching back into the pre-contact rain cloaks (hieke). The thrum commencement at the bottom edge establishes the whenu (warps) at seven per centimetre. The aho (wefts) are woven in whatu aho rua (double-pair twining) with seven to eight millimetres between rows. The feathers are attached singly to every aho in a complex geometric configuration reminiscent of earlier Hawaiian cloaks. The materials used were: flax fibre and kereru, kakariki, kaka and tui feathers. H.950mm, W.1150mm.
